The past few years have shown a struggle for M&As. Fortunately, the market is regaining interest and opening opportunities. We’re moving toward mitigating the risk of the deal and starting conversations about how to get more deals done in 2023.
[13:14] The Best Time to Make a Deal
The best time to sell is when the buyer has the greatest strategic rationale, a compelling investment thesis, and is ready to pay you. You have to be opportunistic. Don't hesitate to take these transactions even when it's not convenient.
[17:18] Preparing To Exit
Timing and understanding are critical. Know why and how deals work; avoid assumptions and losses. Understand what the market says about your business. Learn to establish a foundation and drive value from the start. Ensure your company operates at a high level and that you will continue to benefit if you sell it.
[23:13] The Value of Your Business
People tend to overvalue their business. Use financial modeling to learn its worth. Talk with your buyer to find the best strategies and justify a better deal. Optimize your business valuation with company performance data. Reduce buyer risks when you hit your projections consistently.

Recruitment has become increasingly competitive and challenging, especially in the ground transportation sector. People are no longer merely looking for jobs; they are seeking careers with a positive culture and growth opportunities.
Joining us on this episode of The Future of Ground Transportation Podcast is DPV Transportation Worldwide HR Head Tess McInerney. She discusses the trends in recruitment and how companies can ensure they find the best possible talents.
Here are some power takeaways from today's conversation:
- Standing Out in the Transportation Industry Recruitment Pool
- How to Find the Best Talents
- Recruiting Trends in Transportation Industry
- Ensuring Employee Retention
- The Entrepreneurial Operating System (EOS)
Episode Highlights:
[04:09] Standing Out in the Transportation Industry Recruitment Pool
To stand out, recruiters must include all the details in the job posting — working hours, compensation, benefits, and perks. Sell the company culture. Remember, people are no longer looking for jobs. They are looking for careers — a workplace where there are growth opportunities.
[06:53] How to Find the Best Talents
Aim for high emotional intelligence and soft skills. Hard skills can be taught. Find people who share the company's values and have been in their companies for a long time. It will avoid wasting time and effort on a person who will eventually leave after a couple of months. A Hiring Scorecard can help by breaking down hard skills, soft skills, and values.
[09:41] Recruiting Trends in Transportation Industry
Skilled mechanics take a lot of work to find now. Transportation companies are now hiring mechanics from their programs. They go to the schools and sign them on before they're done.
[13:17] Ensuring Employee Retention
Retention starts from the very beginning. Companies must set up employees for success. It is where onboarding plays a significant role. From the get-go, explain the company's mission, values, roles & responsibilities, and job expectations. Give talents a briefing book and pair them with a mentor.
[15:35] The Entrepreneurial Operating System (EOS)
Tess shared that the Entrepreneurial Operating System helps ensure the HR department is in check— especially in recruitment. To know if a person is fit for a position, she goes back to the GWC framework under EOS: (1) do they get it?; (2) do they want it?; and (3) do they have the capacity to do it?
Notable Quotes:
[06:00] "People are [not] looking for jobs now. They're looking for careers -- a place they can come to [where] they can develop."
[07:23] “[Go for] a good person overall. You know, all the hard skills we can teach along the way."
[13:11] "You want to get the right person excited about the position and really believe in the mission before they even Google us."

[06:52] Plans and Processes
The implementation plan and processes should always be consistent. This ensures that the team can consistently deliver their best work no matter the size of the project.
The first step in this process is to engage the sales team and keep the operations team up to speed. At the same time, identify what’s needed. During implementation, the teamwork of different departments leads to a smooth execution of the plan.
[12:15] The Do’s and Don'ts in Transportation
Alicia has multiple tips and insights into running transportation operations:
- Set metrics and deliverables to give a realistic timeframe
- Talk to the client about the faith and trust within the transaction
- Purchase consistently from a manufacturer
- Good work culture and competitive compensation can attract talented employees
- Mitigate risks by putting in the effort before the launch
- Regular customer service training can help stop issues before they happen
[24:22] Getting Ahead of Future Curves
GPS tracking and routing, safety and compliance, and data accessibility are three critical systems that will be important for years to come.
Autonomous transportation can be years away but it will happen. It’s important to start thinking about the benefits, risks, and challenges now. Getting ready for the future can put the program at the lead of transportation, rather than following from behind.
Notable Quotes:
[04:56] “Resist the desire to change yourself to fit the industry.”

E08: The Clash And Reconciliation Of Cars And Pedestrians With Carlton Reid
Motor vehicles are ever-present in the modern world. And whether we like it or not, they’re here to stay. But to what extent?
Carlton Reid joins us in this episode of The Future of Ground Transportation Podcast. As a long-time transportation journalist, he shares his insights on the history of cars, the future of transportation, and the relationship between pedestrians and vehicles.
Here are some power takeaways from today’s conversation:
- Bicycling essentially gave birth to motoring
- Major cities in the world are starting to adopt car restrictions
- Electric cars are amazing, but they might not be the future
- Policymakers must cater to the driving and nondriving population
Episode Highlights:
[12:00] Bicycling As The Root Of Motoring
Many would think that motor cars came from the idea of powering horseless carriages. On the contrary, it was bicycling that gave birth to motoring. We tend to forget how important bikes were before motored vehicles came along.
[14:03] Pedestrianization And Car Restrictions
Many cities in the world are not putting a prime on the pedestrian experience. More and more places are establishing restrictions on cars and prioritizing people and bikes instead. Carlton emphasizes that motor cars won’t disappear completely. But there will obviously be efforts to lower car density in major cities in the world.
[18:34] Pedestrians Versus Driverless Cars
Carlton points out the bane of driverless cars: pedestrians. These vehicles work well in cities designed for cars. That means places with wide roads, traffic signals, and not much people who wander around. These vehicles may work in highways and freeways, but they absolutely won’t work in cities designed for people.
[24:08] Cars As The Default Solution For The Future
Many people envision electric cars as the future. But Carlton highlights how this mindset still focuses on cars alone. He also believes policymakers and politicians should focus on catering to the non-driving population instead of just accommodating cars.
Notable Quotes:
[12:00] “If it wasn't for the bicyclists, you absolutely would not have motoring in the shape you’ve got it today.”
[15:09] “There are unbelievably fantastic uses for motorcars, but the density of allowing motorcars to go everywhere in a city is absolutely coming to an end.”
[27:25] “We have a future where cars will still be incredibly useful, but they will not be used as much as they are used now.”
[27:58] “When you drive everywhere you want, that's impinging on the freedom of people who aren't driving.”

E07: The Right Tech To Drive Buses To The 21st Century With Louis Bookoff
Technology is everywhere. In this day and age, it’s almost ironic how those who drive us to our destinations remain stuck at the starting point. While bus operators survive on pens and paper for now, things might not be the same soon.
That’s where the inevitability of technology comes crashing in. Louis Bookoff joins us in this episode of The Future of Ground Transportation Podcast. As the co-founder and CEO of Busie, he shares the crucial role of tech in improving bus operations, customer experience, and business sustainability.
Here are some power takeaways from today’s conversation:
- Most bus operators have outdated technology
- Modern tech can help operators function 24/7
- Customers are willing to pay more for convenience
- Tech is crucial for sustainability
- Experience goes beyond transportation itself
Episode Highlights:
[03:15] The Outdated Technology Of Bus Companies
Louis saw a common trend among bus companies in the country — their technologies are outdated. It always took quite some time to process bookings. It was significantly different from securing airline and hotel reservations. This led to the founding of Busie.
[14:59] Breaking Free From The 9-5 Constraint
Busie has pre-booking and full automation processes. They help operators become 24/7 businesses. They don’t have to worry about the constraint of 9-5 schedules for people in the office. The tech lets customers make their reservations at any time and day.
[29:34] Sustainability For Bus Operators
Louis knows many operators are comfortable with using pens, papers, and calculators. But going forward, he believes technology will be crucial for the sustainability of these companies. Going modern is simply inevitable.
[30:35] Experience Beyond The Transportation
Bus operators place a premium on experience but often focus only on the transportation aspect. Louis highlights that the best experience includes operators’ entire interactions with customers. It begins with booking all the way to their post-trip conversations.
Notable Quotes:
[02:04] “We’re in the day and age where everything’s at our fingertips.”
[07:18] “And really, our goal was to build side-by-side with operators from the get-go.”
[28:41] “In this industry, it's about building trust, about those relationships, and continuing to show up and provide value to operators.”
[39:40] “We all make mistakes, but if you practice this lens of empathy and kindness, I think it's going to take everybody really far.”

E06: Improving Fleet Safety Through Innovation
Safety is obviously a huge deal in transportation. Sadly, a lot of trucking companies tend to be reactive rather than proactive. Once an accident occurs, it's just too late. They provide dash cameras or video safety technology only after an accident happens. Or if they provide those beforehand, they get the lowest cost provider because they see it as an expense, and they don’t see the value.
Today on The Future of Ground Transportation, Flint Holbrook joins us to discuss how TruckSpy is revolutionizing the fleet industry through automation to ensure the safety of your trucks, your drivers, and your business.
Here are some power takeaways from today’s conversation:
- Data and analytics help manage safety
- Driving habits can be a safety risk
- Coach drivers so you won’t have to worry about the outcome
- Innovations in the industry in the next 10 years
Episode Highlights:
[07:17] The Value of Automation in Transportation
Oftentimes, truck companies install their safety products from different providers. At TruckSpy, they provide both the hardware and software. They put everything in one dashboard where everything else ties together.
Data taken from the driver's safety behavior, the routes, speeding, etc., are all mashed together to provide insights and analyze the behaviors that lead to accidents such as phone usage, running traffic lights, and following too closely.
These driving habits can be a safety risk. With all this data available, you’re then able to coach your drivers and not worry about the outcome.
[12:40] Investing in Automation
You have to get the best technology on the market for video safety because it's going to save you so many times over what you're going to pay for. Then you need to invest the manual labor to analyze this stuff, understand what's going on in your fleet, and change your driver's behavior.
[19:09] Innovations in the Next 10 Years
We're going to see autonomous vehicles in a major way in the next decade. Flint believes that until we don't have to have engineers and pilots in trains and planes, we're not going to see true self-driving vehicles in any broad capacity. That being said, the driver's life will continue to get a lot easier over the next decade with the huge improvements coming. We have to build and we have to iterate fast enough to see what works. But a lot of big companies are not good at innovating because there's too much bureaucracy.
Notable Quotes:
[07:57] “Safety is obviously a huge deal in transportation.”
[09:02] “Driving habits can actually be a safety risk, so we identify those, we help the driver change their behavior, and eliminate that risk.”
[28:17] “We have to build and we have to iterate fast enough to see what works.”

E05: Scaling Your Business Through Growth and Acquisition
When you’re thinking of scaling your business, there are two ways to do it – hire more people or acquire other companies. Either way, you’ve got to have all your ducks in a row to make sure you’re scaling your business the right way, so you’re scaling up – not down.
Today on “The Future of Ground Transportation”, Jim Becker, founder of Becker Logistics, LLC, shares some lessons on acquisitions: What are some things to look for? When is the right time to do it? And how do you make sure you’ve got your processes in place?
Here are some power takeaways from today’s conversation:
- Have your processes in place.
- Learn how to make time or delegate.
- Brokers exist for a reason.
- The three modes of running a business
Episode Highlights:
[08:55] Lessons in Acquisitions
Acquiring businesses means more problems and more situations. And so, you've got to put your house in order. Have the processes in place so you can potentially grow. If you can organically grow, then you can grow through acquisition, too. The things that will help you grow organically will also help you as you're going through that acquisition growth.
[10:44] Delegation for Expansion
As the visionary of the company, Jim has to predict their future and look out six months to a year ahead. While everybody else is busy working in the business, Jim is working on the business raising capital. You have to learn how to make time or delegate, which are critical things for you to be able to expand your business.
[16:33] The Role of Brokers
Becker Logistics is a third-party provider. They're not moving freight, they are brokering freight. They own zero assets. Jim used to have an asset-based company but realized it wasn't that scalable. Brokers exist for a reason. Jim has formed partnerships with 125,000 carriers throughout the U.S., Canada, and Mexico, so they’re able to cater to high demands, large enough to serve Fortune 1000 companies. Through technology and the intellect of their team, they can serve clients better because that’s all they do – transportation.
[20:52] The Three Modes to Run a Business
- Run mode - you’re just running and you’re not really changing much
- Growth mode - either you’re hiring or doing acquisitions
- Transformation - you’re doing some other process to make something happen
Notable Quotes:
[09:45] “If you can organically grow, then you can grow through acquisition too.”
[16:53] “Brokers do exist. And we exist for that main reason.”
[17:45] "We can service you better than you ever thought because this is what we do... all we do is transportation."

[12:54] The Rewards of a CEO
His personal reward is learning and gaining experience. He also learns about different people and different cultures. As for his professional reward, he is able to influence others and watch them grow.
[14:50] How MetroMax Group Started
MetroMax Group started from scratch. His FedEx company was his first acquisition. He is keen on mergers and acquisitions right now. But their focus is on service and technology, such as offering a Metro Map and software development.
[20:24] Transportation in Ten Years
FedEx will evolve its model a lot, especially since Amazon is ramping up their infrastructure. They will likely start getting into expediting and same-day delivery. On the other hand, Amazon will lean heavily into electric and autonomous vehicles at scale.
Overseas outsourcing is also going to be embraced more. Diversifying labor force and using technology are two levers you can use.
Notable Quotes:
[11:25] “A big part of my job is not just to employ but to inspire and help them reach the goals that they have. And I like the fact that I’m helping people in my community.”
[13:25] “The personal reward is I get to continuously learn. And I get to learn about different people in different cultures, which is amazing.”

Episode Highlights:
[00:51] Transitioning Into Transportation
Mark is the founder of Latitude, Longitude, and Logistics, and works with Amazon in the delivery service program. He spent 10 years in food service and brought the skills in management he gained as he shifted into the field of transportation and logistics. With December being their busiest month, Mark’s company manages over 60 vans on the road and 100 drivers working 14-hour shifts.
[06:18] The Challenges of Delivery
Earlier this year, Mark and his company struggled to get sufficient employees. Unfortunately, they had to change their drug-free policy to widen their workforce pool. Another challenge the delivery industry faces is a shortage of vehicles. Mark has purchased a few of his own and rented extra vans from other companies. However, cargo vans are difficult to find and while they can use box trucks, these can be inefficient in delivering packages.
[11:22] Electrical Vehicles for Delivery
Electrical vehicles are the next big thing in delivery service. Going into electrical means having high-tech and efficient vehicles and doing their part in helping the environment. However, they tend to have a huge demand for infrastructure and power that the supply chain is not yet ready to provide.
[18:47] The Future of Delivery Service
The future of drones and automated vehicles will still take a while. For now, delivery needs a human aspect. Mark is focusing on employee retention and building a workforce that is invested in their career in transportation. He wants to diversify into other companies and retailers getting involved in their own delivery programs and similar services.
Notable Quotes:
[[19:50] “For things as specific as delivery, you're going to need that human aspect.”
[22:19] “That's been one of our focuses, just to make it a really great place to work.”
[23:04] “I want to diversify into other companies.”

E02: The Future of Self-Driving Cars with Leaf Jiang
The world has come a long way in terms of transportation technology. How we go from point A to point B has fundamentally changed over the centuries. On the long road from horses and carriages to automobiles, automated vehicles are now joining the journey.
What does the future of autonomous vehicles look like? How ready are consumers to start accepting them into everyday life? Joining us on this episode of The Future of Ground Transportation Podcast is NODAR CEO, Leaf Jiang. He shares his insight on the future readiness of autonomous vehicles.
Here are some power takeaways from today’s conversation:
- The role of sensors for autonomous vehicles
- Five levels of driving automation
- Consumer acceptance of autonomous vehicles
- Developing software for transportation
- The future of autonomous vehicles moving forward
Episode Highlights:
[08:32] 3D Vision for Autonomous Vehicles
Sensor technology is one of the things limiting automotive development. 3D information opens up a whole opportunity in automation. Getting clarity that LiDAR technology wasn't going to get there anytime soon, Leaf founded NODAR in 2018. NODAR builds sensors that apply from L2 vehicles today to L4 in the future. As a B2B business, they sell to OEMs and tier-one suppliers.
[14:21] Going Automated
It’s about understanding whether it makes sense to go forward fully autonomous. Looking at recent developments, the approach we’re seeing is selling the low-hanging fruit and expanding from there. In the coming years, we'll see slow consumer acceptance and little change in future car designs. As for flying vehicles, the most probable development is drone delivery more than human air transport.
[19:44] How NODAR Sensors Work
NODAR sensors work like triangulation. The farther you put the two cameras apart, the more accurately and farther you can see. It has a lot of applications, including land vehicles, aerospace, infrastructures, smart roads, etc.
[22:17] The Future of Vehicle Automation
We’re moving away from the idea of a static product. Software now plays a bigger role in car development in terms of feature updates and improvements. Safety plays into consumer acceptance. Part of what needs to happen is a focus on consumer education about what they're buying. In some sense, safety is accessibility.

[12:47] The Booking System Project
Jose’s team at Morgan Stanley started the booking system tool for reservations. They partnered with a vendor to provide the infrastructure for the software. Together, they created this game-changer that allows users to view their reservations live and track their cars.
[16:09] The Future of Black Car Services
In the future, on-demand services can rise in popularity and overtake black car services. However, by becoming more on-demand and adapting to technology, this side of transportation can survive. Morgan Stanley continues to look for new initiatives and create more projects.
[23:46] Creating a Successful Transportation Program
A successful program is all about the relationship between you and your vendors. It’s easy to get a car for your service, but it’s the vendor’s work that can bring your service success even through tough times. Treat your vendors as your partners. Check in on them, address problems, and take measures to protect you and your partner.
The transportation industry nowadays faces challenges with shortages and restructuring rates. As an owner, this is your time to become involved in all the programs offered and get your certification.
