Deep In The Jam with Peachcurls: Meadow (Album Review)

I had the special opportunity to listen to the new album, Meadow, by Peachcurls, and talk to him about it before its release on October 23, 2020. On this recorded Zoom video call, I asked him a bunch of questions about the album, guessing what each track means, and got the full understanding behind each element created (please advise: there is explicit language and mad slang).

Ajani Jones Gives Free Snacks at Concerts, Neo-Soul Hip Hop, Anime, and Hate for Coleslaw

Ajani Jones Gives Free Snacks at Concerts, Neo-Soul Hip Hop, Anime, and Hate for Coleslaw

Ajani Jones shares why he gives out free snacks at his concerts, potentially coining the term "Neo-Soul Hip Hop", watching Anime, and his hate for coleslaw.

"Ajani Jones is an emcee from Chicago's Southside. Displaced as a youth his mother and him moved throughout the Southside almost once a year for a large part of his childhood. During this period Jones listened to Hip-Hop & Neo/Soul as a refuge as well as an outlet. Inspired eventually by artists such as Kid Cudi, Jones picked up the pen to rap, as well as to join his high school poetry team. Inspired by Cudi he realized music could be used as a tool to save the youth and let people know they aren't alone in their personal battles. Once high school ended Jones attended college at the University of Iowa for two years. After enduring constant racial profiling from the police & general prejudice he left college behind and returned home to Chicago to pursue his life's passion in music so that he could have his voice be heard. He enrolled at Columbia College in Chicago while living at his mother's house for a year as he honed his writing and voice while collaborating with his peers in the Chicago scene. With a razor-sharp wit and tight delivery his raps are a mix of inward facing introspection about one's own ability to be great as well as groundbreaking flows over contemporary beats that push Hip-Hop's sonic envelope." - Ajani Jones

Kofi Boakye Going Global Musically, Berklee College of Music, and NAACP Award

Kofi Boakye Going Global Musically, Berklee College of Music, and NAACP Award

"Kofi R. Boakye is an 18-year-old Award-winning keyboardist, songwriter, and producer born in Akron, Ohio. Kofi has gathered musical experience from myriad venues across the United States. Kofi has been interviewed by 8x Emmy Award Winner Romona Robinson of Channel 19 Action News as well as appeared in multiple magazines, newspapers and local broadcasts across Ohio. At the age of 15, Kofi was accepted into the University of Akron School of Music’s Jazz Program, making him the youngest African-American pianist to ever be accepted into a collegiate-level jazz program at the UA. In September 2016, Kofi performed at the Akron Civic Theatre, making him the first teen pianist to ever headline a show there. Though many of his experiences stem from within the U.S., Kofi has had the opportunity to refine his talents on the world stage, touring Germany and Prague with the Miller South Show Choir. While music remains at the core, Kofi’s accolade extends beyond the big stage. In 2014, President Barack Obama and the White House awarded Kofi with the “President’s Education Award for Outstanding Academic Excellence”. Currently, Kofi is a senior at Akron Early College who holds the position of Senior Class President, ranks #1 in his class, and is valedictorian." - www.kofibmusic.com

BIO:

"Hello! I’m Angelina. Glassblowing, ceramics, watercolor, acrylic, printmaking, stickers, you name it - kind of artist, designer, hiker, backpacker, and outdoor environmental educator. What inspires me most is the natural world around us and it’s vast intensity. But my favorites are what usually get passed over - - tree fungus - with it’s parisitical yet regrowing nature, moss, the bugs that live in their tiny homes all around the forest, lichen, and dew drops that glisten on spiderwebs. In my spare time I hike and walk any and everywhere I can, stay active, watch movies, spend time with the ones I love, and photograph the beauty and inspiration that surrounds me. My life is about bringing awareness to the little things and how it brings joy and happiness to us, sometimes unnoticed! I took a several years away from constant art making to travel, educate, and create leaders in team building - teaching survival skills with outdoor education - I decided I needed to keep my passion for all things art afloat. I work at home, designing each piece of art, by painting, hand lettering, sculpting, etc. They are each handmade, with some being digitally reproduced because ya know - sometimes, time just isn’t there. Whenever an idea comes to mind, I take note or create it right away. I love customizing pretty much anything for anyone interested in a commission style painting, greeting card, print, etc. Just ask and I will probably do it! When others look at my art, I want them to feel a sense of connection to the earth, a connection that seems to be lost with the hustle and bustle, back and forth, that we go through every single day. Maybe a reminder to help us slow down - take a break and be aware of your surroundings. Head outside, in the woods - or even in your backyard, sit in the grass or in the trees and discover the world that is around us even when we are unaware. Follow me on Instagram @asongforamelody for exclusive commissions, to see new cards, how I make them and some of my adventures I embark on!"

Jamal Lawson of The Jam Company sat down with Jenniva Cummings for a conversation about her work & perspective on being a black artist in America.

The Akron arts publication, The Devil Strip, teamed up with the Akron Art Museum and The Jam Company to create video profiles of three African-American artists in the Akron community that will be on view in the museum’s Jerry and Patsy Shaw Video Box during the run of Jeff Donaldson: Dig. Each of the featured artists will create a work of art inspired by Donaldson that will be performed live in the museum. Video of the performances will be presented throughout the run of the exhibition.

The collaboration was inspired by the Art Museum hosting the Jeff Donaldson "Dig" exhibition (Oct 27, 2018 - Jan 21, 2019). Each artist had an opportunity to learn about Jeff Donaldson, the AfriCOBRA movement he co-founded and then create work inspired by that experience. These interviews will be followed by a performance/display of their work in the exhibition space at the Akron Art Museum.

“Dominic, now in his 8th season with Inlet Dance Theatre, hails from Akron, OH where he attended the University of Akron, Firestone High School (Akron School of the Arts) and Miller South Visual & Performing Arts… Since joining Inlet Dance Theatre, Dominic has been involved in the collaborative creative process Inlet is known for, been a lead instructor in numerous Out-flow residency programs for children, and he has performed/and or taught all over the country (Cleveland, Houston, Seattle, Philadelphia, Cincinnati, East Lansing, Des Moines, etc).
