The Joy of Media Podcast follows the story of Alex White, a young South African radio presenter, voice-over artist and YouTuber, as he sets out to discover the incredible achievements of our youth.

In the form of weekly episodes, the podcast tells the story of how Alex got involved in media and includes interviews with South Africa's inspirational youth. It also features interviews with successful and inspirational people. T

Joy of Media - Season Finale with Mitch Matyana (S1E10)
We are ending our inaugural season with a special 15-minute episode, featuring the young and vibrant Kfm94.5 Presenter, Mitch Matyana. Mitch's story is one of perseverance and learning and he has some really interesting advice to share with you on how to prepare for your life after school. The entire Joy of Media Team would like to thank you for following us for the first season of our podcast, it has been so much fun and an incredible experience covering 10 unique and really motivational stories. We will be back with a second season around the end of Term 2/start of Term 3. Joy of Media - Faine Pearl Loubser on Content Creation (S1E9)
The Joy of Media Podcast has been live for 3 months and the response that we have gotten has already been incredible. We have already covered 8 incredible stories, featuring young achievers and successful innovators, entrepreneurs and media heavyweights. There has been no shortage of inspiration and motivation in our weekly interview based episodes, released every Friday at 6PM. For the second last episode of the season, the incredible stories continue with the story of Faine Pearl Loubser. Faine is an established content creator and social media influencer from Cape Town. A brilliant photographer and videographer, she has over 20 thousand followers on Instagram, and has posted almost 600 images. Faine describes herself as a conservationist, film-maker and free-diver. She enjoys time exploring the depths of the oceans around the Western Cape, discovering the natural beauty that lies just off the coast, and she has been working on ways to make sure it stays that way. In the ninth episode of season one, of the Joy of Media Podcast, Alex talks to Faine about how she got into content creation, what it is like to be a brand ambassador for GoPro and other companies, and what her involvement is with the ocean conservation brand, Faine has been involved in many incredible projects and has a passion for content and its creation. She shares inspiration and motivation that can be taken by anyone who wants to get involved in this field. The world is moving away from simply consuming one single media source and the need for content creation has never been greater. Joy of Media - Bobby Brown on Tech & Youth in Africa (S1E8)
In this very special episode the Joy of Media Podcast team got to be at the inaugural Africa Tech Week Conference. At the conference we got to hear talks by incredible people from around Africa and the world, sharing stories and ideas about technology and entrepreneurship that were absolutely incredible. The host and moderator was Bobby Brown, who we interviewed for this interview. He discusses a bit about the conference, but more importantly gets into the role that the youth are going to be playing in South Africa, and moreover Africa, in areas of technology and entrepreneurship. We also included a couple snippets from the keynote speech by Salim Ismail, a truly inspirational speaker and innovator. Overall the event was incredible and in this episode of the Joy of Media Podcast, Alex unpacks the key ideas that we felt really ring true in terms of the youth! Joy of Media - Africa Tech Week (S1E7)
This week's episode is shorter than usual! This is because we don't have an interview, rather an introduction (or build up), to our Africa Tech Week coverage coming out next week. Africa Tech Week is set to become the largest event of its kind in Africa and features an expo, world renowned speakers and an awards element. We'll be bringing you some of the coolest and most interesting opinions and advice from leading entrepreneurs and innovators from around the world. We hope that this will inspire young entrepreneurs and innovative thinkers to come up with new ideas and plans for their projects! In the seventh episode of the podcast, Alex discusses how excited he is for the expo, and what the Joy of Media Podcast plans to achieve there. Joy of Media - Kade Kalell and Debating (S1E6)
Just four episode left in the season! As we get into the final half of the first season of the podcast we're going to continue bringing you the best youth content and achievements of the youth in South Africa. In this episode, Alex discusses the importance that debating and public speaking has in growing the new generation and preparing us for our roles in society. Joining Alex is South African A Team Debater Kade Kalell. His team, Gauteng, came first at the South African National Schools' Debating Championship. Joy of Media - Skye Meaker and Wildlife Photography (S1E5)
We're halfway through the season! In the fifth episode of the Joy of Media Podcast, Alex chats to Skye Meaker, a 17-year-old wildlife photographer from South Africa, who was named Young Wildlife Photographer of the Year in 2018, for the U17 category. The competition features entries from all around the world and Skye's achievement lead to him being a speaker at the recent World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, where he presented alongside Dr Jane Goodall (one of his idols). He also got to chat to Sir David Attenborough. Skye's photographic journey has taken him all over Africa and other parts of the world to tell nature's stories through his lens. As Skye says, "he brings the wonder of nature to the people." Joy of Media - RX Radio (S1E4)
Can you believe that we are almost halfway through the season? In episode 4 of the Joy of Media Podcast, Alex talks about how he got into media and discusses RX Radio, a radio station for the patients, parents and health workers at the Red Cross War Memorial Children's Hospital. Alex talks about how important it is for the youth to be heard and how RX Radio provides a platform for communication in the hospital. Joy of Media - Richard Boorman and Media Streaming (S1E3)
In our third episode of the season Alex dives deep into the future of media in South Africa and talks TV, streaming and connected content with Richard Boorman, the Head of Communications for Multichoice Connected Video which manages Showmax and DStv Now. They discuss the future of streaming on the African continent and just how Showmax plans to innovate. Richard shares his insight from working in the field of media, and explains how Showmax is set to become a key player in the South African streaming market, while not necessarily aiming to compete directly with international brands like Netflix. Showmax has its own local shows and originals that can be found no where else and are making a big impact on the viewing trends of consumers. Also in the episode, Alex gets advice from Richard on how best to prepare for a life in media. If you are interested in becoming an actor, producer, director, writer or virtually anything in-between, then Richard has some uplifting advice for you! Joy of Media - Kai Parsons and Entrepreneurship #AGEC (S1E2)
After the success of the first episode of the podcast, we're back with Episode 2! The second episode features Entrepreneurship and the role it plays in our youth. Alex chats to Kai Parsons, a young entrepreneur and youth TEDx speaker who won the 2017 Allan Gray Entrepreneurship Challenge and was a 2018 finalist. They discuss the key to early entrepreneurial success and Kai's plans for the future. Kai has been involved in multiple business ventures from an online web development company, called Silicon Development ( to his latest business which takes the form of a social enterprise aimed at helping to deal with gas emissions in rural areas. Kai was so motivating and inspiring that we even added him to the podcast team! He now helps with marketing and managing our website. Joy of Media - Ryan O'Connor and Media (S1E1)
The podcast premier features an introduction to the podcast and an overview of Alex's experiences in media. It includes an interview with radio and media heavyweight, Ryan O'Connor. The episode aims to set the tone for the rest of the podcast season to come, with motivation and advice for youth who want to get involved in media. This is the first of ten episodes being released online and through multiple, popular podcast directories. Episodes will be released weekly on a Friday. The episodes are going to cover a wide range of topics centred around the youth, motivation and inspiration. There will always be a link to the youth. Worried about data? Don't worry, if you listen to the podcast on our website, you can choose between low, medium and high quality settings to suit your data needs. An entire total ten minute episode will only use around 16MB of data on high quality. This low data use means that any one in South Africa should be able to access the podcast without worrying about data costs! We hope you are as excited as we are to bring the Joy of Media to life.
