Tune into hear the good, bad & ugly as we reflect on 2020 and delve into personal stories and share our final Netflix Picks of 2020. 2021, we ready!
Season 2 Episode 9 - Why did women lose 60% more jobs than men in 2020?
The COVID-19 pandemic has impacted everyone, but not equally. While no one is untouched by the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic, women have been disproportionately affected. The pandemic has exacerbated existing inequities; we discuss the Unmasking Gender Inequity with the BCWHF’s subject experts on the socioeconomic impact; with women shouldering 60% more job losses in March than men; women losing 26% of work hours in April due to childcare; and the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on women’s health in British Columbia. Furthermore, the higher risk of exposure and to infection from COVID-19 for women in BC working in one of the four industries with high face-to-face interactions (healthcare, retail, education, accommodation, and food services).
We converse these imperative issues with Dr. Marina Adshade, Professor of Economics at UBC, and the commissioned economist for the Unmasking Gender Inequity report. Dr. Marina is one of Canada’s foremost economics experts on the role of women in society and a major advocate for inclusive cultural reform. Dr. Marina is one of the primary subject matter experts on the data and results in the report and shares what we can learn from these findings.
We also invite Jamie; a teacher and mother of two. She shares her story as a teacher, loss of work, increased caregiving responsibilities, and losing the support system she once had access to as the pandemic unfolded. Jamie discusses her personal experience, advocating for increased support for teachers and women in pandemic recovery plans.
To finish our 2nd to last episode of the year we also give you our Netflix pick of the week and share our topic for the last episode of 2020. Thank you always for listening, commenting and sharing with your friends and family.

Back to school back to reality 🎶 Like many of you we haven't stopped thinking about what school will be like for kids this year. We've lost sleep over it, we've watched youtube videos with all sorts of conspiracy theories, we've chatted with friends and teachers about education options available. Is the education system a hot mess?! We tried our best to find out by asking ALL the questions you had to high school teacher Sarah Keel who's based in the state of Arizona. With the US already in their 3rd week we wanted to get the inside scoop on whats really going on and what school is like today. Izzy also opens about her experiences with her 5 year old who's in her 3rd week of online kindergarten. If you are a parent, teacher, grandma, grandpa, caretaker, sitter, tutor, aunty, uncle or INDIVIDUAL on earth who gives 2 cents about education you do NOT want to miss this episode. SCHOOL is in session and it is NOT the same as it once was when we were growing up. We also get Sarah to share her Netflix pick of the week and her favorite movie based in a school because don't act like you haven't wanted to ask every teacher. Grab a jar of MUMGRY and tune in. We wish the very best to all the teachers, parents and students this year. Change is difficult but as Sarah reminds us, "kids are incredibly resilient."

"The show must NOT go on!" In the aftermath of the Amy Cooper Central Park incident - Actor, Activist, Philanthropist, Husband and Father, Griffin Matthews released a nearly 8 minute video titled, "Dear Amy Cooper: Broadway is Racist". Filmed inside his home, Matthews shares his experiences dealing with 'Amy Coopers' while creating his hit Broadway show Witness Uganda aka Invisible Thread. In the viral video it's made clear that 'white men can be Amy Coopers too' and we receive an incredible description of what character traits exist in an Amy Cooper. Our jaws drop from the information we learn and at the same time we rejoice when we find out what actions have been set forth to change the future of Broadway.
While our focus is on understanding racism in theatre we also took some time to learn more about what it's like to work on the set of "Dear White People" and get the scoop on whats coming up for one of our favorite Netflix and HBO stars!
Griffin Matthews has been making a difference in our world for a VERY long time and you'll find out all the ways! Mumgry SZN 2 Ep 4 - Dr MJ Rwigema Drops Knowledge On Us
On this very important, eye opening and informative episode Dr. MJ Rwigema (aka Lilian's cousin) joins us for a very relevant and essential conversation about racism against black people. If you are living on this earth you DO NOT WANT TO MISS THIS EPISODE! This episode is FREE HIGH EDUCATION from a black woman Doctor with a masters in social work, professor at York University for the past 4 years and former professor at the University of Toronto for 5 years. Not to mention she has nearly twenty years of community/social work experience that includes mental health counselling/therapy, arts-based education, community-based research, group facilitation and documentary filmmaking working primarily with Black, racialized, immigrant and LGBTQ communities.
In addition to her nearly 20 years of social work practice experience, as a researcher and scholar, MJ’s work focuses on the interlinkages between political ‘voice’ and ‘healing’ from trauma for politically targeted groups. Specifically, her research is focused on: 1. The perspectives and experiences of Rwandan-Canadian genocide survivors on the 1994 genocide in Rwanda and its impacts on Rwandan-Canadian individuals and communities; 2. Social work with LGBTQ communities; 3. Histories of anti-racist activism and resistance to white nationalism.
In her free time, MJ enjoys vipassana meditation, basketball, reading fiction and creative writing.

MUMGRY SZN 2 Episode 2 - Black Lives Matter
On this episode we discuss our experiences as black women in Vancouver and mothers raising black children. We share how we plan to prepare our children for this world and touch on the importance of parents discussing race relations regardless of the race of their child. We give honest answers to questions we don't necessarily enjoy reflecting on..."Would people be responding and paying as much attention if we weren't in the midst of a pandemic? We cancelled vacations, cancelled jobs, cancelled shopping, cancelled restaurants, cancelled parks, cancelled sports, cancelled live entertainment, cancelled life as we know it...did it take cancellation of damn near everything to gain attention to a modern day lynching in broad daylight and the issues that have faced black people for hundreds of years? And what happens next?"
We discuss the #blacklivesmatter movement, protests and GOOD progress being made. We honour and remember the countless black people killed by cops.
Overall, this was not an easy episode for us to record...we are exhausted and our emotions are running high but coming together to share has always been our way of processing our feelings each time a black life is taken from this earth.
Rest in power George Floyd, Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor and Tony McDade . Say their names. No more hashtags.
