S2 Ep 4: Intersectionality (and more) in Nutrition
Firstly: this is not a COVID-19 related episode. Both of us want to keep our podcast anxiety-free when it comes to that side of things, but we do want to give our listeners our best wishes and hope you are staying safe and at home in this unpredictable time. In this ep, we talk about how society and culture has affected and can affect nutrition and health outcomes. This includes discrimination, the patriarchy, feminism, diet culture and more. If there’s one thing we ask you to do after this pod it’s make a list of your own privileges in the world - whether that be gender, race, ability, education, and anything else you can think of! *Jargon-y terms: Universal Health System: where the government covers all or most of your medical needs (e.g. in Australia, we have Medicare) Cis-gender: a person whose sense of personal identity and gender corresponds with their birth sex Queer (in regard to gender identity): umbrella term for sexual and gender minorities who are not heterosexual or are not cisgender Capitalist society: an economic/political system where a country’s trade and industry are controlled by private owners for profit, rather than by the state. Patriarchy: a social system where men hold the primary power, and predominate in roles of political leadership, moral authority, social privilege and control of property. DISCLAIMERS: Apologies if you can hear typing in the background of the episode! Important work things happening during these crazy times. Apologies for the delay in the audio between the two of us! We will get this cross-continental podcasting down pat soon (we hope). --- BOOKS “Happy Fat” - Sofie Hagen “A Room of One’s Own” - Virginia Woolf “Adults” - Emma Jane Unsworth “The Testaments” - Margaret Attwood SCREENS Man In the High Castle (Amazon Prime) Muby RuPaul’s Drag Race (Netflix) Allana Davison (@allanaramaa) - YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCewjCoiB__Fikintrj0uLfg MUSIC KT Tunstall - “Suddenly I See”, “Drastic Fantastic (album)” Sara Bareilles - “Love Song”, “Fairytale” HAIM Maggie Rogers Bran’s IWD2020 Playlist - https://open.spotify.com/playlist/1xGwqMLfYuKmUbmk7tJqoF?si=X9-K83akSLubxvbmjGl0TQ “Lady Marmalade (Like a Version) - G Flip --- FIND US Bran: www.instagram.com/arebrandedlife www.twitter.com/arebrandedlife www.arebrandedlife Liza: www.instagram.com/lizakhins www.twitter.com/lizakhins www.lizakhins.com OUR WORK BRAN - dietetic consults at The Wellness Workshop https://www.thewellnessworkshop.com.au  LIZA - Dietetic consults in East London or online (intuitive eating & eating disorder recovery) + online courses + resources & training for professionals at the London Centre for Intuitive Eating:  Https://londoncentreforintuitiveeating.co.uk USE CODE PANTRYPARTY FOR £50 off ALL ONLINE COURSES + RESOURCE BUNDLES Our Goodreads accounts: Bran: https://www.goodreads.com/user/show/90825493-branavie Liza: https://www.goodreads.com/lizakhins And here’s how to tell us you love the pod! www.thepantryparty.org www.instagram.com/thepantryparty pantrypartypod@gmail.com Theme song by Ross Davidson: @rossco_davo Artwork and graphics by Caitlin Preyser: @caitlinmadethis https://caitlinpreyser.myportfolio.com/

S2 Ep 3: Self-care Fundamentals and Work-life Balance
In this ep, we intended to talk about self-care and getting that work-life balance going...but it turned into how society and the system really doesn’t help us achieve that and be the healthiest versions of ourselves. There are a few big words so here are some definitions and resources for more information:  Maslow’s hierarchy of needs: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maslow%27s_hierarchy_of_needs  “Health is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.” - Preamble to the Constitution of WHO as adopted by the International Health Conference, New York, 19 June - 22 July 1946; signed on 22 July 1946 by the representatives of 61 States (Official Records of WHO, no. 2, p. 100) and entered into force on 7 April 1948. The definition has not been amended since 1948. (https://www.who.int/about/who-we-are/frequently-asked-questions) Health equity: “Equity is the absence of avoidable, unfair, or remediable differences among groups of people, whether those groups are defined socially, economically, demographically or geographically or by other means of stratification. "Health equity” or “equity in health” implies that ideally everyone should have a fair opportunity to attain their full health potential and that no one should be disadvantaged from achieving this potential.” - https://www.who.int/topics/health_equity/en/ BOOKS Moment of Lift - Melinda Gates Animals - Emma Jane Unsworth The Insecure Girl’s Handbook - Olivia Purvis It’s Not Okay to Feel Blue and Other Lies - Scarlett Curtis By the Light of the Moon OTHER The Insecure Girl’s Club @theinsecuregirlsclub, https://www.theinsecuregirlsclub.com/ What Olivia Did - @livpurvis, https://whatoliviadid.com/ TV Fleabag (Amazon Prime) Marvellous Mrs. Maisel (Amazon Prime) Modern Love (Amazon Prime) PODCASTS Do Go On The Fringe of It MUSIC The Maine --- FIND US Bran: www.instagram.com/arebrandedlife www.twitter.com/arebrandedlife www.arebrandedlife Liza: www.instagram.com/lizakhins www.twitter.com/lizakhins www.lizakhins.com OUR WORK BRAN - Dietetic consults at The Wellness Workshop https://www.thewellnessworkshop.com.au  LIZA - Dietetic consults in East London or online (intuitive eating & eating disorder recovery) + online courses + resources & training for professionals at the London Centre for Intuitive Eating: https://londoncentreforintuitiveeating.co.uk USE CODE PANTRYPARTY FOR £50 off ALL ONLINE COURSES + RESOURCE BUNDLES Our Goodreads accounts: Bran: https://www.goodreads.com/user/show/90825493-branavie Liza: https://www.goodreads.com/lizakhins And here’s how to tell us you love the pod! www.thepantryparty.org www.instagram.com/thepantryparty pantrypartypod@gmail.com Theme song by Ross Davidson: www.instagram.com/rossco_davo Artwork and graphics by Caitlin Preyser: www.instagram.com/caitlinmadethis https://caitlinpreyser.myportfolio.com/

We want to give our biggest thank you to our listeners (you guys!) for being so patient and generous with you love for the pod. In this ep, Mel talks us through the ups and downs of freelance life, how she built her dream career from the ground up, her innate creative ability and why it was important for her to incorporate that passion into her career, how to begin asking people for money for the work she was doing, and some sentimental reasons as to why she loves food so much. Oh, and if you listen close enough, you might hear the pitter-patter of cats feet in the background! S1 Ep 10: Why is a dietitian working in life insurance? with Simone Abley
Today we have the pleasure of talking to great friend Simone Abley. Sim holds a Bachelor of Nutrition and Dietetics and provides a positive reality check for new grad dietitians. We talk about why Sim went into dietetics in the first place; the ins-and-outs of having allied health professionals in the insurance industry; how your university course probably won’t prepare you for your first job (and why that’s okay to some degree); the societal expectations of what a dietitian does, how that limits us, and why that ties into a need for better advocacy skills. We also discuss plenty of advice for new grad dietitians facing the intimidating employment world, being willing to learn and be inquisitive as you go, and. the importance of taking time off after uni. S1 Ep 5: A Conversation with a Real Life Supermum, Tess Handrinos
In today’s episode, we’re chatting to our good friend Tess Handrinos. While the rest of the cohort was struggling to meet assignment deadlines, Tess and her hubby Alex had another due date in mind, welcoming their beautiful daughter Emilia in late 2016. After a short but well deserved break from her studies, Tess went on to complete her Bachelor of Nutrition and Dietetics, managing to ace both her degree and motherhood. Now working as a non-diet dietitian and with baby number two on the way (VERY soon!), Tess is THE queen of work/life balance. She has spent the last year building her business, Joy Full Nutrition, whilst practising both clinically and in private practice. Tess continues to be one of the most thoughtful and caring people we know; is an amazing mother and friend and, quite honestly, an inspiration to both of us. In this episode, we find out how Tess manages to keep it all together - expertly balancing work, motherhood and life, all while maintaining her own personal values. Enjoy!
