S9E5 How to make ‘high risk’ birth beautiful
Hannah’s successful VBAC after 2 c-sections
In a world where VBAC (vaginal birth after c-section) seems like an insurmountable challenge, Hannah took a leap of faith.
Listen in as we explore her journey, filled with lots of learning, determination, resilience, and the unwavering belief in her instinct and intuition.
Today I am talking with She Births mum Hannah Rodger @hannahrodgerchaimama about her 3 birth experiences. Across those stories, there are 2 hospital births, 2 c-sections and 1 Homebirth transfer.
We allow space for Hannah to really harvest her birth experiences. To understand the growth and journey, the lessons and the gifts.
The gift of awe really stood out to me, as you will see in her photos, too. And awe cannot be underestimated in life. Awe is profound and brings with it a deep sense of belonging to the expansive universe. It can change and heal us. According to some researchers, awe is even an antidote to loneliness.
On socials, you can enjoy the wonderful birth photos taken by She Births mum, Tessa Tran @iamtessatran, who has also shared her amazing birth story with us on the show.
This podcast is an epic unfolding, like our motherhood journeys are, and it seems like Hannah is never going to achieve her natural birth, even up to the last minute when she starts to feel her c-section scar.
Stay tuned to the end, where Hannah shares her intuition across the birth experiences. I know you will find it insightful and probably resonate deeply.
I hope you enjoy it.

S9 E4: Teaching children intuition will change the world
How intuition expands talent, creativity, confidence & happiness I have been waiting a long time to record this podcast! To say I am excited about the Intuition Process for children is putting it mildly.
I believe this program, with its teachings and the power and integrity of the organisation behind it, has the ability to change the world and, as my guests say, contribute to world peace. The documentary and the Australian research are also going to be amazingly powerful.
So, let me begin by asking you a few questions…
Do you believe in intuition? How often do you access it?
Are your children more intuitive than you?
Do you think it is important for them to harness their intuition?
Today, I have Mala Sundareshan, International Program Director of the Intuition Process, with me. Mala works for the global Art of Living non-profit organisation founded by Sri Sri Ravi Shankar and is currently leading the teacher training and rollout of the Intuition Process worldwide.
I also have a dear friend and documentary filmmaker, Michael Collins. Michael is a four-time Emmy-nominated director and producer and the founder of Thoughtful Robot Productions. His films are highly impactful, have been screened globally over the last two decades, and have even changed laws!
Mala and Michael share their experiences and insights into following and teaching children aged 5 to 18 techniques to harness what seems like magic or superpowers.
The Art of Living says the Intuition Process wakes up our latent intuitive potentials through specific techniques of brain activation and meditation. Allowing children to access, cultivate and maintain their inherent intuitive capacity.
“Intuition is the faculty of knowing or understanding something without the need for conscious reasoning or proof. As a culture, we have learned to follow our rational thinking as we go through our daily lives. We pay little attention to our inner voice, our gut feeling, that instinctual form that goes beyond our reasoning layers.
We were all born with a naturally intuitive ability to perceive beyond our senses. As we grow, our culture and education obstruct us from developing our capacity to access our inner potential, especially when we need them most.”
Today, we talk about:
- If intuition is an essential aspect of human experience?
- If intuition can be developed and honed over time?
- How intuition differs from coincidence
- How intuition might change the education system? (Fingers crossed for this one!)
- What children are gaining from learning the process of intuition and how that unique expression occurs in each child.
- And the research into the mechanisms of intuition by Joel Pearson, world leading neuroscientist based at UNSW, Sydney, Australia.
This will create a revolution in not only Artificial Intelligence but Absolute Intelligence!
I hope you enjoy.

S9 Ep3 What does a new model of healthcare look like? With Dr Stu.
Hello, and thank you for joining me for today's podcast.
Whether you're pregnant, you've got a baby in your arms or a child at school. Whether you are a birth worker or an allied health practitioner, you will find this conversation very interesting.
I believe it is important to have conversations with people who think differently, especially those who are curious. People who speak their minds and research outside the mainstream narrative.
Dr. Stuart Fischbein has been an obstetrician in America since 1986. After working in the standard medical model at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, California, he now practices community-based birthing. He works directly with home birthing midwives through www.birthinginstincts.com to offer hope for those women who prefer and respect a natural birthing environment and cannot find supportive practitioners for VBAC, twin and breech deliveries. He is an outspoken advocate of informed decision-making, the midwifery model of care and human rights in childbirth, receiving the 2016 “Most Audacious” award from HRIC.
He has spoken internationally on breech and vaginal birth after cesarean section. He has appeared in many documentaries, including: “More Business of Being Born”, “Happy Healthy Child”, “Reducing Infant Mortality”, “Heads Up: The Disappearing Art of Vaginal Breech Delivery” and multiple YouTube videos discussing birth choices and respect for patient autonomy and decision making.
He has the goals of improving collaboration amongst the differing professions in the birthing world and the re-teaching of the core skills, such as breech and twin vaginal birth, that make the speciality of obstetrics unique.
One of the most challenging conversations I have during She Births is informing people that your body is your own and only you can decide what to do with it, even during pregnancy and birth.
The second uncomfortable truth is that so-called evidence-based care is a term that gets bandied about a lot in search of status and prestige and power, but in truth, health care varies from practitioner to practitioner. From hospital to hospital. From country to country.
In today's conversation, Dr Stu and I explore how the medico-industrial complex is more likely to be influencing the policy and therefore the suggestions, trickling down into advice and maybe even coercion that is given to us during pregnancy and birth.
Different policies flow down to us as consumers from the private companies that own the hospital as to whether we are allowed to birth in water for example. An insurance company that covers an OB may be the determining factor as to whether you are offered a VBAC.
We need to do our own research and choose. Just because someone says so, does not make it so for you.
Right now we are living in an age of disinformation and misinformation, and as the powers that be seem to continually try to confuse us and divide us. We're going to have to come back to ourselves.
We talk about
the medico-industrial complex
How informed consent is not able to happen in our current model of healthcare
Medical induction, the reality of due dates and the ARRIVE trial
Natural breech births and other so called high risk mums being offered more choice
The risks of multiple ultrasounds, the label of growth restriction and realising what ais happening redefining risks within maternal foetal medicine
How continuous monitoring of labour and tracking the time of labour increases c-section rates
And finally my favourite part is seeing this system vs consumers as a Star Wars battle. We also lean into a vision that has hope.
I hope you enjoy today’s conversation with Dr. Stu - sending lots of love across the ethers to you and your family.
If you feel passionate like I do, and you want to help families have better births then reach out and join me in our upcoming training. Become a wise woman of birth and help others find their own way. I also will be holding a Wise Woman Retreat towards the end of the year.

S9, Ep2 Intuition is the parental brain working with Neuroscientist Rocio Zunini
What happens to your brain as a mother or father? ‘Intuition is the parental brain working’ with Neuroscientist Rocio Zunini
Welcome, dear listeners, to 2024. I am so happy that this season of the podcast has decided to be about intuition. It is one of my favourite topics, and I believe it is also one of our superpowers as mums.
This season I will be exploring intuition and of course other topics with professionals and parents around the world.
Today's podcast is with Rocio Zunini, a neuroscientist with a Ph.D. from the University of Ottawa and a mother of two.
She is the founder of Newborn Parents, which was born out of a fusion of her two passions: the brain and the relationship between parents and their infants.
She educates parents and professionals about parental brain science so that they can take advantage of the profound brain changes that accompany matrescence and patrescence.
She is also an advocate for nurturing infant sleep.
She firmly believes that when parents and professionals learn about the power of the parental brain, they can create a path for a lifelong nurturing relationship between families and their babies.
I couldn’t agree more! And birth is the big bang beginning of this relationship.
Today with Rocio we explore the parental brain and the amazing changes that occur across pregnancy, birth and postpartum…And I mean in my experience, when does matrescence ever end? Our children, if we maintain a relationship with them and want to have quality connection then we have to continue adapting and growing. They continue to keep us on our toes.
I'm hoping I might even convince Leroy to come on this season, even though as a philosopher, he doesn’t actually believe in intuition I think it would be fabulous to hear about quarter-life and his 21st birthday experience. Let me know if you would like to hear about that. For me I was so emotional I could hardly give the speech.
Anyhoo! Today we discuss
How the parental brain is highly dependent upon experience and environment
How parents and infants synchronise, and children borrow our nervous systems
How we can nurture, embrace and help this process of brain development
Why it is so important to take care of the Information we are putting in, not just food
Why we often feel anxious as new mums, and how to manage this
Did you know that because the brain is more malleable, you can actually benefit more from yoga and mindfulness
We also describe the brain networks that change during matrescence, which are: reward, protector, emotional and empathy systems
The importance of joy and mutual delight!
I love how brain science reiterates so much of what we practice in our Soul Mama Circles, which start up again in February. 100% of mums say that they loved the process and found it priceless btw.
Also, the wisdom and importance of She Births to utilise both bottom-up and top-down approaches in education.
So I hope that there will be joy in your new year, whenever or wherever you are listening to this podcast.
I love hearing from you. Leave us a review, send us an email and let us know what you think and feel, please.
We have so many exciting things to share this year. My new one-day Masterclass is a hybrid learning program with an online course. It is a one-day live program plus Zoom workshops for Q&A and allows me to include some of my new teachings about intuition, embodiment and matrescence.
Our new She Births® Guide and Educator training is launching again. We have a vision to reach so many more families, but we need your help. If you are passionate about helping restore the sacredness of birth in your community and helping others have beautiful births, then reach out.

S9, Ep1 Maiden to Mother Birth Story
SheBirths.com.au | She Births® Online Courses | She Births® Weekend Courses
Maiden to Mother Birth Story : The power of slowing down with Tayla & Jaime
Today's podcast is with Tayla and Jaime, a She Births® couple who gave birth on the south coast of NSW about 10 minutes before their midwife arrived.
We share a lot of laughs in this podcast and a lot of insights and truths. They are a really fun and playful couple. I was recently inspired by their rewilding of their relationship recently.
Tayla took pregnancy as a time for really slowing down. Which I believe is one of the most important things we can do, in resistance to our hyper productivity culture but also because it is a step towards being able to listen and receive all the wisdom and gifts from both our instinctual bodies and our intuitive higher self during pregnancy.
As we move into more being and less doing there is more stillness and therefore silence. We can tune in and listen to the way our bodies and all of Nature around us communicates with us continually
I love how Tayla could feel the subtle moments when her maiden self was arising and dying throughout labour. And I love how much laughter these two bring to their life. Why can’t birth also be fun and playful?
We talk about
The shadow and light sides of our maiden selves
The victim and drama triangle we can get caught up into
Making love to initiate labour
Creating a birth altar that connects us with our red thread and the power of mother blessing ceremonies
The different type of support we receive from dads and doulas, especially during pushing
My knowledge of the psychic imprint on a child at crowning from the atmosphere in the room
We also discuss the superpowers and gifts from birth such as intuition, intimacy and the awesome strength and competency as a mother all of which I am writing more about in my upcoming book.
As this is our final podcast episode for 2023 I want to thank you all for listening and engaging with my work here at She Births.
It has been so nourishing to meet mums post partum who said they learnt and were so inspired by the birth stories we share here.
Also, by the openness and vulnerability I share too.
I look forward to a new year ahead and sharing some very new and exciting projects and offerings.
S8, Ep7 What is a Private Midwife? Should you have one? Featuring Liz Wilkes of My Midwives
SheBirths.com.au | She Births® Online Courses | She Births® Weekend Courses
What is a Private Midwife? Should you have one? What is relational based care? How to choose a provider for your beautiful birth...
Today's podcast is with Liz Wilkes who is the Managing Director and Founder of My Midwives.
My Midwives was established in 2010 and has supported thousands of families.
They are change agents in the maternity system offering true individualised care that we so often talk about at She Births.
My Midwives is the first midwifery practice in Australia to admit women to hospital with Medicare rebates and also the largest private midwifery practice.
They provide continuity of care through pregnancy, labour, birth and postpartum.
Their care covers all the normal visits and aspects from booking into hospital, doing blood tests and scans etc.
They will remain a mothers primary care provider but work autonomously and collaboratively with a range of hospitals and practitioners.
They have exceptional outcomes and their data will be published very soon.
Liz Wilkes was one of the first Medicare provider midwives in Australia and conducted the first Medicare rebated birth.
LISTEN ON APPLE | LISTEN ON SPOTIFY
Most women I know will make a phone call quickly after they pee on a stick and choose whatever care provider their latest friend or perhaps their GP tells them, without actually knowing that outcomes can vary greatly in different models of care.
This podcast is designed to help you and any of your pregnant friends out there understand the different models of care and guide you in choosing the best place for you.
Because finding out midway through pregnancy at a She Births course can sometimes feel really deflating and frustrating.
Today we talk about...
→ The spectrum of care
→ The importance of relational care
→ What research tells us is gold standard
→ How midwifery continuity is different to obstetric continuity
→ How Liz started My Midwives and what makes it so unique
→ How collaboration and advocacy are key to your better birth. How midwives, doulas, and hospitals interact well together to help avoid unnecessary inductions or other medical interventions.
→ Birthing on Country care for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander families
→ Freebirthing - what it is and isn't
→ Giving yourself permission to shop around and trusting what you feel is the best care for you
I hope you enjoy this very special episode.

How to get through birth & breastfeeding hell.
Birth Initiation - Doing the inner work with Cristina & Damian
Today's podcast is with Christina and Damian, a wonderful She Births® couple that gave birth on a houseboat in San Francisco.
They both did a huge amount of the psychological and spiritual work in preparation for not only birth but their relationship and parenting.
They still however had moments in birth and breastfeeding of it feeling like absolute hell.
Doing the work does not mean we don’t face challenges. But rather that we are prepared to face them and have tools to pass through them with more grace, ease, resources and understanding.
We open with Cristina and Damian’s love story. Because who doesn’t love a great COVID love story ;)
We talk about the differences and similarities between the Australian and American hospital systems. We discuss iatrogenic harm, morbidity and mortality that occurs within and because of hospital systems.
We discuss childbirth as a spiritual initiation and mention kundalini and awakening.
The importance of feeling safe during birth and listening to your body for that information. Plus, healing from sexual trauma.
Damian shares his personal preparation for parenthood and being a part of the Mankind project.
How the soul of his baby reached out to him prior to conception.
How fathers can be an amazing support in labour even while feeling fear, uncertainty and the inability to sometimes do anything at all.
A powerful use of the incantation ‘Yes’ during labour.
Plus, very challenging supply and diagnostic issues while breastfeeding.
We discuss healing from our inherited beliefs, softening and developing more of an embodied presence - plus more, what I call superpowers and gifts from birth.

She Births®:
The She Births® study: https://shebirths.com/research/
Introduction:
Hello, welcome to another episode of the She Births Show. Today I have a dear friend and fellow doula Jerusha Sutton on the podcast.
Jerusha has been a birth worker for 17 years, as a birth and postnatal doula in Australia and UK, and an international award winning birth photographer and videographer.
Together we are talking about her film that has won 24 international film festival awards that she made in collaboration with Jo Hunter, Zoe Naylor and Selina Scoble, Birth Time.
We discuss the changes that Birth Time is making both culturally and politically to our conversations about birth experiences and birth trauma. It has sparked a fire that I am happy to say is now blazing.
I'm sure a lot of you have seen Birth Time and been very moved by it and also had multiple questions arise about your own experiences of giving birth in the system and the care you received.
Today we dive into the core message of the film which revolves around the question; what would it take for all women to come out of their birth not only safe but emotionally well?
On the back of Birth Time a study at Western Sydney University launched, the same place that did the She Births® study. Over 9 months they collected over 8,000 submissions about women's experiences of giving birth in Australia in the last 5 years.
You might know this as the BESt study. You can stay up to date with the study via a facebook link in our notes.
What was found was heartbreaking but has subsequently changed legal ease already and initiated a NSW parliamentary inquiry.
If you are in NSW please, I encourage you to submit any traumatic experience you have had to the inquiry. The link is in our notes.
If you are a birthworker and have ever witnessed anything traumatic in New South Wales you are also invited to submit before the 11th of August.
Birth trauma is defined as inappropriate, disrespectful or abusive treatment before, during and after birth. We expand on these definitions in our chat.
In the BESt study it was found that 30% of women experience some form of birth trauma in Australia. Shockingly, 1 in 10 women experience obstetric violence.
We go into more detail around what obstetric violence is. Please note it is not specifically referring to an obstetrician but includes all birth workers. And violence is not just actions but words too and what is commonly experienced as coercive language and a lack of informed consent.
Within the 30% of women experiencing birth trauma 70% of those say that it was due to the way they were cared for, or spoken to.
58% of women felt dehumanized. 26% of women felt violated and 16% of women felt powerless. All of these experiences have very significant effects on women, their relationships and of course partners and babies too.
None of this is okay. So how do we fix it?
Well tune in to discover the most evidence based solutions. Jerusha and I discuss
What is birth trauma & how can we reduce it
What is true continuity of care
The importance of indigenous birthing on country
The healing power of birth in our lineages
Jerusha’s best experience while interviewing birthing experts for the film
My experience of remembering Leroy’s birth at his 21st birthday party recently
S8 Ep2 One of the most RARE twins birth story ever - no epidural, double breech
Welcome to episode two of Corinne and Andy’s story. Today we share the natural births of their twin girls, Ivey and Rocky, frank and complete breech which is an extremely rare story.
I hope you enjoy the way that we talk not only about the mechanics of birth but also traversing the psychological and emotional challenges and the reminder of how important it is at these times to have people around you that are giving power back to you!
Sharing our stories in a deeper way to honour all parts of ourselves allows for embodiment and integration. I call this Birth Harvesting. I am writing more about this and how to prevent birth trauma in my upcoming book. Make sure you follow me and She Births® on socials and subscribe to our podcast to hear more conversations about what really matters to all of us, on the inside.
In this episode we talk about
Discovering the wild woman in your base chakra, SHE
How regional hospitals are unable to assist with higher risk births
The challenge of changing location and travelling to a supportive hospital
How a supportive system can still leave you in tears after each appointment and how to get back into your zone
How interpreting statistics and making risk assessments is unique to each of us
Avoiding an induction and refusing an epidural
Having a dialogue with your cervix
How SHE, the wild woman is always there
Using affirmations in labour and a birthing stool squatting position for breech babies
I hope you enjoy.

Hello, welcome to a very special two part birth story podcast with parents, Corinne and Andy who have three little girls under the age of 2.
In a sense this podcast is three birth stories… all with a lot of change, flux and challenge. Also with a lot of power, agency and triumph.

After being told that a c-section was best by two hospitals, then told that an epidural was essential if a vaginal birth was attempted Corinne and Andy managed to have a beautiful natural birth of double breech girls under the care of Prof Andrew Bisits.
In today’s episode we talk about:
Birthing in a regional Australian area and long labour drives to hospital
Doing your own vaginal exams and knowing when to get in the car
How education changes the role of our partner for birth
Playing music to our babies during pregnancy
How birth can be like getting tickets to a great footy game
How birth can be incredibly healing
The power of claiming and owning our body-mind connection after a history of anxiety
Doing the work, turning inwards and using visualisation
Calling in a birthing circle and knowing what they give to you
Transition and the natural calling we feel into our new identity

S7, E5 Birthing with Boundaries - Brooke Elliston Birth Story
Brooke Elliston's Birth Story today is inspiring in so many ways. Like so many of you out there Brooke had a looming threat of induction - rates of which have doubled in the last twenty years in Australia.
I know a lot of women are struggling with whether to have an induction or not. So I have included a huge amount of information and data linked at the end of these Podcast show notes to a blog on the She Births® website to help you make the decision that is right for your family. https://shebirths.com/australian-birth-stories/to-induce-or-not-to-induce/
Brooke is a yoga teacher and we begin by talking about the language of the body and intuition. Then go onto discuss women’s power in birth plus many ideas and concepts I am exploring in depth in my new book.
In the podcast we talk about:
Finding your hell YES and your hell NO
Listening to your body and feeling resonance
Creating strong boundaries for yourself
Partners protecting the birthing space
Your rights to decline an induction
Coercion and lack of ethics often experienced in the system
Risk and stillborn data being an individual’s choice as we assess risk differently
Whether it is even possible for a labouring woman to give true consent
How the environment we birth in has an impact on our outcomes and feelings
Power dynamics in the birth space and my concept of ‘Power To’ that is desperately needed
At the end we also talk about conscious conception at the quantum level. And how the shakti takes us over during birth. And we go through a little ‘birth harvesting’ as I call it, where we speak to the gifts we receive from our births.
This is one of my favourite types of conversations, where we get to be spiritual but also really really practical, pragmatic and grounded in the body. This is one of the reasons I love birth so much, and yoga too because it really is where the rubber hits the road.
There are numerous issues unfolding along with the increase of inductions such as increased resuscitation of babies, decreased maternal satisfaction and increased postpartum hemorrhage. A lot of experts are saying we might be reaching the point of doing more harm than good in the birth space right now.
The data and articles below will help you make an informed and empowered decision. Remember that your choice needs to be an embodied decision also. Whatever you choose, remember that birth matters and you have rights. You have intelligence within your body. And you can connect to your higher self and inner feelings to help guide you at any time.
Our work at She Births® is to empower you and help protect you from the conveyer belt of the systems. But you have to take the education and apply it. Make sure that you choose a team that supports you 100%.
If these topics are of interest to you. If you want to connect more deeply with your intuition or if the idea of harvesting gifts from your birth or preparing in a pragmatic yet spiritual way for labour sounds like you, then make sure you subscribe to be part of my VIP book list. You will gain sneak peek access, discount offers and even help me choose the final title!
My upcoming book is perfect if you are pregnant, a mum currently or a partner wanting to be useful or understand birth more fully, and of course it is perfect if you are a birth worker. Go here to sign up www.shebirths.com/book

MumLife with Ruby Challenger and She Births - Award winning director shares the beauty, chaos and struggles of motherhood

In my soon to be published book I am writing a lot about how screens and stories are creating subconscious wiring and belief systems about birth and motherhood. Through exposure we are all continually absorbing a culture, a set of beliefs. Culture eats birth plans for breakfast!
In other words, if you don't take charge of what culture and the narrative is doing inside your brain and body you will not get the birth you want.
Ruby Challenger is also on fire about this. It was a spark ignited at her She Births® course many years ago and now blazing through her work as a filmmaker.
Ruby's short film, MumLife, screened in official competition in the 2022 La Cinef section at Cannes Film Festival. Five weeks earlier she had given birth to her second baby, so she packed up her family of four and took them to the festival! MumLife is a 15 minute musical about postnatal anxiety and is now enjoying a festival run.
Ruby completed her Masters at the Australian Film Television and Radio School (AFTRS). She wrote her thesis on motherhood and the cinema, looking at mothers in front and behind the screen, which is being released on Instagram to further the discussion about mothers in film.
Ruby has been on film sets since she was born - legend has it her first trip after the hospital was a film set to visit her dad.
Alongside her award winning musical film, MumLife, her advocacy work for families will fill you with passion and purpose - to make all the places we go more inclusive and family friendly.
In our podcast today we discuss media and the common birth/parenting culture. Plus, look at what it's really like studying or working as a mum, in one of the most intense and male led industries, film.
As Ruby says: It's important that we change these narratives. Most of the women that you see on film and TV or any media who are mothers, are not going to be a protagonist.

S7, Ep2 Lesha Nelson - Healing birth trauma - How trauma imprints and how the nervous system heals
shebirths.com | Pregnancy Guide | Lesha Nelson Meditation
Our guest today is Lesha Nelson, who is an expert in somatic therapy and healing trauma.
Lesha has spent over a decade studying trauma, meditation, stress responses in the body, embodiment, psychosomatics, the womb, and birth work.
She believes it’s possible to re-pattern your nervous system from dysregulation, childhood conditioning, and insecure attachment patterns...to a place of connection and deep trust.
Lesha guides her clients to their blueprint of health through womb healing, nervous system alchemy, and somatic trauma resolution.
She offers guidance in calling your spirit baby into life, preventing and treating birth trauma, and creating more coherence with your own soul’s conception and birth process.
I love her vision statement: My dreamiest vision is a world where we feel safe in all of our relationships, feel safe to be authentic, and feel like we belong because we are deeply resourced and open to pleasure.
In our podcast we cover what trauma is. What is big and small trauma and how they wire in the brain body and nervous system. How trauma is released and healed.
What the opportunities are for us as parents being ‘good enough’ for our children. How we can avoid birth trauma and how to think about birth from a babies’ perspective.

S6, E6 Eating your way to a healthier pregnancy and baby with Lily Nichols
At She Births we begin our course with nutrition! Because, you are what you eat, right…
Today’s guest is Lily Nichols. She is a registered dietitian/nutritionist and certified diabetes educator. Lily has worked in prenatal nutrition public policy, consulting, research, writing, and clinical practice.
She has an in-depth understanding of why conventional policy is what it is and where there’s room for improvement.
For me personally what is amazing about @lilynicholsrdn is that she has all the science (over 930 citations in her books) showing us that mums and babies are both impacted by diet, in the short term and the long term.
There was so much to cover in this conversation. Together Lily and I discuss simple ways you can tweak your diet to not only optimise your health but also improve your birthing outcomes.
We talk about my favourite, magnesium! And of course, gluten, grains, glyphosates and soy.
Why knowing and understanding your GI levels is important for ALL pregnant women, not just GD mums. How we minimise the risk of induction by changing our diet and improve the health of our children by what we eat during pregnancy.
Visit Lily’s site https://lilynicholsrdn.com and check out Lily’s bestselling books; Real Food for Pregnancy & Real Food for Gestational Diabetes.

S6, Ep5 Unapologetic Power With Kemi Nekvapil
Unapologetic Power With Kemi Nekvapil
How to own your power in birth and life as a woman.
Kemi Nekvapil is one of Australia’s leading credentialed coaches for female executives and entrepreneurs, author of two books and a highly sought-after international speaker.
Her first book ‘The Gift Of Asking: A woman’s guide to owning her wants and needs without guilt’ is a wonderful handbook for each of us.
But today we discuss her latest publication ‘Power: A woman’s guide to living and leading without apology’, that I discovered via Elizabeth Gilbert’s book club.
Kemi has studied leadership and purpose at The Gross National Happiness Centre in Bhutan and trained with Dr Brené Brown to become a Certified Dare to Lead™ Facilitator.
She is a powerful advocate for connected, value-based living. You can discover more and follow her on Instagram @keminekvapil and via her site https://www.keminekvapil.com/
I am not a huge fan of ‘how to’ books but Power is so much more. Filled with anecdotes and a personal narrative, it is so easy to read and enjoy.
Kemi gave me a huge insight into the challenges of living as a minority and made me deeply aware of my white privilege.
We talk about choosing where to birth and where power goes in the birthing room.
She shares her two birth journey’s and the work she did in preparation to wholeness and readiness.
We talk about how we disappear by being a “good girl” and “a good wife”, the journey of transitioning from maiden to mother, and how she knew in her soul she wanted to mother her children in a different way.
I hope you enjoy this conversation.

S6, Ep4 Connections between birthing and menopause
Connections between birthing and menopause
Stop people-pleasing and discover authentic self-care
Welcome to Episode 4 of Season 6, our Rise of the Feminine season.
This collection of podcasts talks about how the feminine rises within us during pregnancy, birth and beyond. I’m so grateful you are listening to these conversations about living in a way that fully honours our feminine journey and strength.
I absolutely loved talking to this remarkable woman, Alison Brahe Daddo. Her honesty and generosity are so refreshing.
Alison is a screenwriter, podcaster, teacher and former model who appeared regularly on the cover of Cosmopolitan, Dolly and Cleo magazines in the ‘90s.
She grew up alongside a generation of Australians. Now, she’s all grown up and has gone through menopause, an experience she shares in her new fantastic book Queen Menopause Finding your majesty in the mayhem.
Menopause changed Ali’s perspective on life, relationships and body image.
It made her realise the implications of being silent, speaking up, consent, boundaries, and the importance of feeling, of being and of anger. She reveals how all the shifting within gave birth to a new sense of self and her life.
In this episode, we chat about the following:
- Menstruation, pregnancy, birth, sex and menopause.
- How the lessons, opportunities and gifts can be so similar.
Wherever you are along the journey of womanhood, it is time to practice deep self-awareness and authentic self-care.
Pull together a team of practitioners that can help you the way you want. Invest in your health of body, mind and soul.
Remember, we can’t stay busy forever!
As we continue with our Rise of the Feminine season, stay tuned at the end when Alison shares her vision of what the world would look like with restored feminine power and wisdom.
I highly recommend Alison’s book so that you can become the Queen of your life, whatever stage you are in.
I hope you enjoy it.

S6, Ep3 The Spirituality Of Birth With Jessica Chapnik Kahn
Welcome to Episode 3 of Season 6, our Rise of the Feminine season.
In this collection of podcasts we are talking about how the feminine rises within us during pregnancy, birth and beyond. I’m so grateful that you are listening to these conversations on living in a way that fully honours our feminine journey and strength.
Today's conversation is with one of my best friends Jessica Chapnik Kahn. She is co-author of A Repurposed Life with Ronni Kahn from OzHarvest. Author of the children's book Lenny and the Ants and the poetry collection MADRE, which was inspired by the birth of her son, Lev. Jessica lives in Sydney and is married to musician Nadav Kahn. She has worked in theatre and TV, played in the bands of some of Australia's finest artists, and released two solo albums.
Jessy is an extraordinary human being, and you'll hear how much I love her.
I wish that every person had such a curious and open minded friend in their lives.
In this episode we chat about:- Her two beautiful births. I was Doula at both her 5 year old and her 2 year olds birth.
- The postpartum world and this sense of disappearing as a mother.
- Birth, as a dream, and a rite of passage.
- Posterior labour, epidural and her little girl Shemi needing surgery after birth.
- We also talk about surrender, the hero's journey, the shame and maternal rage that we often feel as mothers.
- Plus, the rising of the feminine alongside the rising of the masculine. That has to happen at the same time.
I hope you enjoy.

S6, Ep 2 Amelie Patrux's empowered birth story of Elijah
Amelie Patrux's empowered birth story of Elijah. From Australian Doula to French Solo Mom; a story of conscious choice.
Welcome to Episode 2 in our Rise of the Feminine season.
In this collection of podcasts we are talking about birthing and living in a new way that fully honours our feminine journey and aspects. From caring for the Earth, to honouring our elders and of course how the feminine rises within us during pregnancy, birth and beyond.
Listen at the very end of each episode for each guest's vision and experience of the feminine rising.
Today I speak with the wonderful Amelie, who is currently living in France as a solo mum.
She actually helped found our Doula Service and was a Doula before becoming a mum.
Amelie tells her story about an assisted spiritual conception and her birth with her sister and mom.
In this episode we chat about:- How birth cultures vary in other parts of the world. France has an extremely high epidural rate of 80%.
- We talk about the power of pre labor and altered states of consciousness, going into pain, how time expands, all these wonderful gifts of labor.
- One of my favorite parts is the mother and baby ‘landing, then meeting’.
I hope you enjoy.

A little more about Amelie:
Amelie was raised by a South African mom and a French dad and lived in Sydney for the last 7 years before landing again recently in the suburbs of Paris (in the midst of a global pandemic you might have heard of?!) to be closer to her tribe of women. This melting pot of cultures gave her a profound love and curiosity for the diversity in people’s ideas, cultures, lives and opinions. Amelie is passionate about sustainability, reducing the footprint on our planet and truly believes we can all make a difference, one small action at a time!
She is 37 yo and the lucky mom of a little boy named Elijah, who is 17 months old.
Amelie has been a Doula and a yoga teacher for the last 6 years, first in Sydney and now in France. She has worked for She Births as the Doula Program Coordinator from the early days of this project. She also created an online program in France, called Naissance Holistique, to support couples through the journey of pregnancy, birth and postpartum. She created it with a fellow French doula, Emmanuelle and they surrounded themselves with a team of perinatal experts: a midwife, a pediatrician, a lactation consultant, a psychologist.

Season 6 of The She Births Show focuses on The Rise Of The Feminine.
Listen in to Indigenous activist Ella Noah Bancroft in conversation with She Births Founder Nadine Richardson on why we need to decolonise our minds.
An enlightening and inspiring conversation on claiming sovereignty and honouring Indigenous wisdom for a return to feminine power and healing.
Ella Noah Bancroft is a Waalubal woman. She is a descendant of the Bundjalung peoples of Northern NSW, and also has blood lines to Scotland and England. She is a Connection Therapist, Mentor, activist and creative carbon neutral event coordinator.
She is passionate about rewilding the world and the feminine force.
Ella runs amazing events like The Returning and Culture Camp and has been working deeply with others at Koori Mail in Lismore since the floods took place earlier this year. They were also recently given the NAIDOC Innovation Award for their leadership and grassroots community work.
Ella recently released a beautiful new children's book with her mum, titled Sun and Moon.
In this episode we chat about:- What the Rise of the Feminine means to her
- How sovereignty and spirituality go hand in hand
- How we decolonise our minds on a personal and broader level and even in our relationships
- The current state of politics in Australia and the 11 Indigenous members sitting in parliament right now
- How listening and truth telling are a teaching for all of us in building healthy relationships and healing
- What has been happening in Lismore and the power of an Indigenous intergenerational led recovery

S5, Ep 6 - How to heal birth trauma and have a VBAC in the hospital system. Janneke's vaginal birth after cesarean.
shebirths.com
How to heal birth trauma and have a VBAC in the hospital system. Janneke's vaginal birth after cesarean birth stories in Australia and Abu Dhabi.
VBAC stands for vaginal birth after cesarean or as I like to sometimes call it ‘the near miracle birth’ in this day and age.
Before we begin I think it's helpful to hear some of the statistics and then we will jump into a truly inspiring VBAC story from Janneke.
Around the world successful VBAC stats are extremely low. The BMC Pregnancy and Childbirth in 2020 stated that:
VBAC rates are quite high in countries such as Finland, Norway and The Netherlands (38–55%) and low in Australia and the US (12%) [2,3,4]. In Australia the vast majority of caesareans undertaken are due to repeat caesareans [2]. In New South Wales (NSW) the VBAC rate varies from 6% in private hospitals to 19% in public hospitals.
So, it is no small feat to psychologically prepare and often push hard for a VBAC within our systems. It really helps us to understand why so many great doulas, educators and midwives are pushing so hard to help prevent that first caesarean too!
I would like to warn some of you that this podcast could be triggering if you have specific birth trauma. It could also be incredibly empowering and healing if you are preparing for a VBAC.
In this episode we chat about:- How Janneke prepared for and managed to avoid not only another cesarean but the trauma and triggers from her first labour.
- Her general anaesthetic emergency c-section and the first labour with very little encouragement from providers in Abu Dhabi.
- The two different types of induction she had with each labour.
- We discuss working with a psychologist and becoming more mindful and more selfish (in a healthy way).
- How She Births prepares both parents
- How She Births helps the healing and processing of previous trauma.
- My favourite takeaway that I think we can all benefit from is “NO is a full sentence”.

S5, Ep 4 - The Love's Beautiful Birth Story: A story of true love, conscious conception, intense fear of birth, motherline death, three parents and a short intense labour in New Zealand
Lauren Godfrey-Love and Lauren Fitzgerald-Love, both meditation teachers, share the story of their daughter's birth, Goldie and all the moments that led up to her arrival.
This is much more than a birth story.
We talk about conceiving during COVID across multiple borders with a Goldies' Dad, Lauren G's mum passing away during pregnancy and the inclusion of her spirit at the birth.
In this episode we also discuss:
* How a partner's fear and distress can arise during birth from their own birthing imprints.
* The benefit of working with skilled midwives to help malposition during labour
* Getting postpartum support when family and friends are not around
* Maori traditions, birth in New Zealand
* 'Micro-dosing' online birth education to gently address intense fear of childbirth
* The impact a Soul Mama Circle has had in processing the mind body and soul shifts as Lauren journeys into matrescence
I hope you enjoy this story as much as I did. I couldn't think of a better way to celebrate motherhood this Mother's Day than with a double mumma family.

They talk about the body to be a guide and lead the way in our preparation and our healing is key - it is a portal where we can learn to let go of all the beliefs and ideas that no longer serve us.
Bodywork and shadow work are so important in the motherhood journey. Our tears, our letting go, our crisis are all opportunities for powerful transformation. Just like pain is a portal for power.
In this episode we chat about:
How they scripted their birth
How they scripted each trimester
How they chose to rewrite their family lineage
How labour was irregular and even stopped
Using active birth strategies like duck walking to help with an asynclitic head presentation
Osteopath's help with lactation
A partner and doula's role throughout pregnancy, labour, birth and postpartum.

S3,Ep 4: Australian Birth Story - Second Pregnancy Overcoming Birth Trauma & Healing
Paola became a She Births® mum in her second pregnancy.
She has two little girls and her first birth and second experience were dramatically different.
In this podcast, we talk about how dark and challenging birth and motherhood can be - as well as how to come through the other side.
We explore what heals trauma, PTSD and postnatal depression and the trifecta that helps to create a beautiful birth.
Paola's second pregnancy was also far from smooth sailing - with a breech presentation up to 38 weeks and health issues with her baby in utero.
Through her journey of realising she is a survivor, and after a number of miscarriages Paola went on to have an ecstatic and healing second birth.

S3, Ep 1: Jane Hardwicke Collings, Healing Before Your Birth
She is a grandmother, midwife, teacher, writer and menstrual educator.
And she was also a home birth midwife for 30 years.
Jane gives workshops on the spiritual practice of menstruation and the sacred dimensions of pregnancy, birth and menopause.
She founded and runs The School of Shamanic Womancraft and has recently launched an e-course called Pregnancy - the Inner Journey and Healing from Traumatic Birth Experiences.
She is a very dear friend and certainly one of the wise women in our birthing world.
I think our conversation is perfect to include right next to our previous interview with She Births® mum Peta Kelly on scripting your birth.
Peta and I talked about healing the mother line and generational trauma - but of course it is not such an easy thing to do.
At She Births® we discuss our belief systems and what fills the subconscious mind. The latest neuroscience that confirms how we live is how we labour...and we know that traumas are passed down as well as fears and beliefs but untangling that ball of wool inside our heads and hearts is not always so easy.
Jane has many insights that will allow you to understand and unravel perhaps the tangle of a traumatic birth, or the toxic belief systems that could be passed down via your family's 'red thread'.
Jane, like me, believes that giving birth is an opportunity to heal and the growth and transformation available to women is profound.

I hope you enjoy and please leave us a review if you do. xxx

S2 Ep5: Peta Kelly, How to Script your Birth
Peta is a She Births® mum and took part in our first live She Births® Show in Bondi as one of the Powerful women who created a peaceful birth.
Peta has been featured in Forbes Magazine and considered one of the Top 27 Female Entrepreneurs changing the world by inc Magazine. She was a self made millionaire by the age of 25 and proudly retired her hard working solo mum.
She is an author, speaker, change maker, and closeted stand up comedian. Her fantastic books - Earth is Hiring and Earth to Kids are well loved by our community and she has just published a new book: Stop Missing the Point. Hey Conscious people you can enjoy your life too
She is the mum to two gorgeous little ones born in Australia and proudly talks about scripting her birth.
Over the years we have had quite a few mums who have written their own visualisations for birth. And I highly encourage it.
I provide the background music from our vis. for this very reason - so that you can lie back in the bath and start to dream about YOUR birth you truly wish to have it...
Now scripting is a little bit different to birth affirmations and - it's kind of like an amped up self written visualisation. To script something has detail, feeling, is written in the present tense and I also believe it requires your intuition...connection to your insight and glimpsing into the future. Leaning into the best possible outcome for you!
It is a big commitment right - because with birth we also don't know what cards might be dealt to us on the day.
But that's what Peta did and lots of other mums too.
To write a script for birth indicates for me that you have a degree of mastery - a strong awareness and connection between your body, mind and soul.
I hope this chat inspires you to clear the path for yourself - to create and script your best birth possible for you. We are the stories we tell ourselves. Our lives are being created from an inner narrative all the time, whether we are conscious of it or not.
And right now amidst this COVID pandemic with so many birth restrictions there could not be a better time for you to come into your full power for your own life and for your birth.
Scripting also provides an opportunity to to heal, to awaken and to craft the story or song, so that every cell in your body is singing it, as Peta says.
To help you with scripting your birth I have created a guided meditation in our private She Births® Facebook Community for you to access that will also be uploaded to Insight Timer soon. I hope you enjoy.
It is incredibly important how prepare for birth. We have to pause, feel, contemplate, discuss, share fears, reflect a little bit more and dig a little bit deeper into our own minds, bodies and hearts - so we can create the best birth possible. Sometimes we also need to look back a few generations back before we can go forward.

💌 A Message from Nadine in these uncertain times. 💌
We are all travelling on the same little cruise ship called planet Earth!
I hope you are finding access to your stillness in this crazy time.
Keeping yourself and your family, community and the whole planet safe. #flattenningthecurve

Notice the tension and resistance then let it go.
Notice the discomfort or even grief and practice gratitude for all you have, then you will find the joy.
An opportunity exists for us all right now to come back home to ourselves, back to our hearts, back to our humanity and back to a new vision for our world.
We want to support you even more.

S2 Ep2 | Pink Elephant"s Sam Payne, Making sense of losing the most important thing in the world.
A conversation about how to support ourselves and our community through infertility, miscarriage and pregnancy loss.
Pregnancy is a time for excitement and wonder, indulging in our hopes and dreams. Yet 1 in 4 women miscarry and 1 in 6 are challenged with fertility issues. Why don't woman share and normalise our experiences, seek support for our grief and loss and honour the loss of these hopes and dreams? Why are pregnancy loss and fertility issues are treated as medical anomalies, rather than a deeply emotional and spiritual journey.
In our latest podcast Nadine talks to Sam Payne of Pink Elephants who is working to support women and eliminate the stigma around miscarriage. It's an important conversation, and one that all women should hear. It might not be relevant to you, but it will be relevant to someone you know.
