Exit 111 Five Years Later, Hangout Fest, and Hulaween
It's been five years since Exit 111 took place on our beloved Farm in Manchester, featuring heavy-hitting acts like Lynyrd Skynyrd, Def Leppard, and Guns N' Roses. Bryan Stone attended with Taco, while Barry made a visit to check it out. The hosts reflect on the festival's surprising gun policy and discuss how things have changed since then. Will Great Stage Park ever host another festival like this?
In more recent news, we explore Sand in My Boots, a new festival headlined by Morgan Wallen in Gulf Shores, AL, which replaces the long-running and beloved Hangout Festival. Hulaween is also on the horizon in Florida.

Beyond South Star: Huntsville's Unique Vision for Cultivating a Music Scene
We conclude our coverage of South Star 2024 this week with an exclusive peek behind the curtain into how the festival came together in such a short period of time, and the long-term vision the city has for it. Despite the hurricane weather and Sunday's cancellation, the event was a huge success for the city. Matt Mandrella is Huntsville's Music Officer, quite possibly the first person in the country to hold a municipal position dedicated to developing and improving the musical culture for a city. "Huntsville is working to develop its music infrastructure, including attracting industry professionals and improving music education in schools," Matt tells us.
Matt also explains the reasons why Huntsville wanted to host a regional music festival, what commitments the city made when working with C3 Presents to bring the event to life, and the shockingly short timeline they had to complete it when the decision was made to move it up a year from 2025 to 2024. Beyond South Star though, Huntsville believes that music is a critical component to the city's growth and quality of life. Matt takes us on a deeper dive into the plans Huntsville has to bring in more artistic talent, including grants and incentives bands can receive for touring and creating music. It's a fascinating conversation behind the scenes you won't want to miss!

South Star to Couch Star – Hurricane Helene Brings Us Together for a Bonnaroo Reunion
Hurricane Helene has made a big impact on the Southeast, and while we're all grateful to be safe, our weekend took an unexpected turn. The inaugural South Star Festival in Huntsville, AL came and went, but it was shorter and muddier than we had planned. Despite the setbacks, was it worth the trip?
After Sunday's cancellation, we sat down with Daniel and Sharla, Evan Bonnaroo, Chloe, and Shaina to chat about 'Couch Star,' and reflect on how we felt lucky to have even one day of the festival—and even luckier to experience a mid-year Bonnaroo reunion.

Algorithms Are Hurting Music Festivals
It's the week of South Star Music Festival, and Barry and Bryan are gearing up to head to Huntsville, while Russ, unfortunately, has to miss out due to a wedding. To make matters worse, the news that Tom Morello is replacing Jane's Addiction only deepens his FOMO. Thanks to The What Podcast's roving correspondent Trevin, the trio also gets some insight into the Bourbon and Beyond festival, which took place this past weekend in Louisville, KY.
Finally, the episode dives into the heart of the discussion: how algorithms are reshaping the festival experience. Are festivalgoers still discovering new music at large events like Bonnaroo, or are they just attending for their favorite headliners?

Bonnaroo 2025 News and Speculation
It's "last call" before The What Podcast takes a short break, so the crew gathers to tie up a few loose ends. No special guests, no topics, just Bryan, Barry, and Russ. But first, Barry has a little news to break about the first confirmed booking for Bonnaroo 2025. It's still too early for rumors and speculation, but Childish Gambino is making the rounds as a potential headliner. We don't think that's likely, despite what other people are reporting. What are our other thoughts on the Bonnaroo lineup for 2025?
We then shift gears and look at the rise of EDM in the festival scene, as jam bands are on the decline. Plus, destination concerts and cruises are here. Would you consider going on a cruise to see your favorite artist perform? Finally, we look ahead at other events like South Star in Huntsville, and Burning Man in Nevada, happening as we speak. And Bryan leaves for NYC soon to see Pearl Jam again.

Imagine preparing for your first trip to Bonnaroo, only to have your wristband stolen before it arrives. That’s exactly what happened to our guest this week, Abbey Sugrue. Rather than letting this setback ruin her festival experience, Abbey turned to the Reddit community for help and reached out to The What Podcast for additional advice and we awarded her a package of Bonnaroo memorabilia from Barry's basement.
Not only was Abbey's first Bonnaroo a success, it gave her a new perspective on life, making it more than just a music festival. Hear her story and her tips for first-timers that will help you max out your experience as well. Plus, Barry, Bryan, and Taco kick things off with the latest festival updates, including the recent soggy experience at Elements Festival in Pennsylvania and what's happening at Outside Lands in California.

Chappell Roan at Lollapalooza and Major Festival Updates
While Bonnaroo news is light this week, the festival scene up north is buzzing. Lollapalooza lit up Chicago, and Montreal's Osheaga was equally vibrant. The crew is amazed by Chappell Roan's skyrocketing success in the pop world, as she wowed crowds at both festivals alongside artists like Noah Kahan, Green Day, and Reneé Rapp.
Closer to home, Chattanooga is set to host a new Bluegrass festival for the next three years, and Bryan and Barry delve into this exciting development for the city. They also explore Huntsville's South Star and discuss some lineup changes at next month's Bourbon and Beyond. Finally, they look ahead to key dates for Bonnaroo 2025.

GWAR Invades Bonnaroo 2024 and We Remember Woodstock '99
There's no band like GWAR and they did Bonnaroo right. From crew sacrifices to tea parties, these intergalactic warriors partied hard and put on an amazing late-night show, complete with their trademark blood. In this episode we debut our interview with their new guitarist Grodius Maximus.
Also joining us is our campmate Elizabeth Thorpe, a photographer who got to shoot some amazing sets at Bonnaroo 2024, including GWAR while wearing our Never Not Great t-shirt! Later in the episode, Beth and Bryan reminisce about Woodstock '99 since they both attended 25 years ago.

Say She She Takes On Bonnaroo 2024 as Festival First-Timers
As soon as Piya, Nya, and Sabrina of Say She She stepped onto The Farm for Bonnaroo 2024, they instantly saw what made the festival so special. After performing to an enthusiastic crowd on Thursday, the trio sat down with Barry, Bryan, and Lord Taco to talk about their performance, their Talking Heads cover, and how they were welcomed to their first Bonnaroo.
"I had so many friends tell me their beautiful stories about Bonnaroo and being proud of us that we're finally doing it," says Piya Malik, originally from the UK and she instantly saw the parallels to Glastonbury. "We're a new band. No one knows who we are. But the crowd that was there, the support of this, the energy, they welcomed us to their Bonnaroo."

Declining Festival Sales and Celebrity Sighting Etiquette

In addition to getting to the bottom of the apparent festival fatigue, the crew also chats about what they believe to be the standard set of rules when it comes to approaching a famous person. At the same time, they acknowledge the times these rules can be bent or broken.

Staying Sober and Finding Support at Bonnaroo

This week on The What Podcast, guests Tara Viland, Kai Viland, and Cassie Wanamaker join Barry and Bryan to continue last episode’s conversation about staying sober on The Farm.
The crew chats about how Bonnaroo is a wonderful place for meeting new people and exploring new worlds, but how it can also be a tough place for people trying to lead a sober life. With the right support and a good mindset, however, it can lead to just as rewarding of an experience.

Mapping Out the Highlights and Conflicts of the Bonnaroo 2024 Schedule
This week on The What Podcast, hosts Barry, Lord Taco, and Bryan offer their quick takes and expert opinions on the just-released Bonnaroo 2024 schedule.
Every year, Barry, Lord Taco, Bryan, and thousands of Roovians patiently await the Bonnaroo schedule, hoping for the best and expecting the worst when it comes to set conflicts. Finally, the Bonnaroo 2024 schedule is here, and there’s lots to talk about! Will it all go out the window when you finally get to the Farm? Probably, but it sure is fun to map out your dream path through the festival!
That's not all the crew has in store for listeners this week, however! They also talk with Patrick Whelan, co-founder of Soberoo, a non-profit organization he informally started at the first Bonnaroo in 2002. Soberoo is a project that ensures anyone looking to remain sober throughout the duration of the festival still has fun, safe places on the farm. The group now shares its mission at dozens of festivals around the country. Learn more here.

Diving into EDM on the Bonnaroo 2024 Lineup Part 2
Just a few weeks ago, The What Podcast crew started to take a look electronic dance music's relationship with Bonnaroo. This week, that journey continues, as Barry, Bryan, and Lord Taco chat with a panel of fans who seek to help guide them through the uncharted EDM waters (What is 'Electro-Soul'?).
Now familiar with the genre's history in regards to Bonnaroo, as well as having examined the evolution of The Other stage and Where in the Woods, the gang now turns to a carefully selected group of experts: Tyrone Basket of The Daily Frequency, Kyle Gonzalez, Christian Pina, and Matthew Murphy. The guests answer Barry and Bryan's questions, helping them awaken the rave-kids that perhaps have been within them all along.
Building on what we learned from Daniel a few weeks ago and his Spotify EDM playlists (bonnaroo bpm, where in the woods swirl, where in the woods bass, and philos records takeover), the panel helps us break down the artists on the lineup and give us an idea of what to expect (Beware of SVDDEN DEATH!).
Stay tuned to The What Podcast to hear when we announce the winner of our ticket giveaway contest, too!

Bonnaroo's 2024 Outeroo Lineup and Television's Richard Lloyd Reflects on Marquee Moon
This week on The What Podcast, Television's Richard Lloyd joins the crew to dive into the band’s seminal release, Marquee Moon. Listen to the art-punk legend’s insights here, or watch via YouTube.
Lloyd tells stories of writing and recording Marquee Moon, including why drummer Billy Ficca appears orange on the cover art. "Billy liked health food, but he ate too many carrots," he remembers with a chuckle. "We were telling him, 'Stop! You’re turning orange!' And he kept eating them."

Diving into EDM on the Bonnaroo 2024 Lineup
This week on The What Podcast, hosts Barry, Lord Taco, and Bryan embark on their previously-promised quest: diving headfirst into electronic dance music, or EDM. The gang runs through the historical importance of EDM at Bonnaroo and takes a look at the EDM present on the Bonnaroo 2024 lineup.
To assist with their journey into the dance genre, The What Podcast is joined by self-described EDM fan Daniel Haskett, who provides insight into the history of the style and how it has become such a big part of festival culture. For an even deeper look at the genre, check out Haskett's accompanying EDM playlists here: bonnaroo bpm, where in the woods swirl, where in the woods bass, and philos records takeover.

Fans' Bonnaroo 2024 Lineup Recommendations
This week on The What Podcast, Barry, Lord Taco, and Bryan asks listeners who they should check out when it comes to the Bonnaroo 2024 lineup. Additionally, they hear ‘Roo tales from Olivia Ross, a newspaper photographer who has worked the festival the last two years.
First up, the guys react to fans recommending they check out the likes of The Mars Volta, Fred Again…, The Tesky Brothers, Half Moon Run, Whyte Fang, and more.
As for the conversation with Ross, multi-year vet discusses how despite each year featuring different types of crowds with varying taste in music, she’s always had an enjoyable experience on the farm. Though her first year involved a good deal of confusion, she soon became a pro, and now works the fest as a concert photographer.

Bonnaroo Day Passes and Tales from Bourbon & Beyond
On this episode of The What Podcast, Barry, Lord Taco, and Bryan are joined by guests Trevin Bernarding and Chris Dossett to dive into the return of Bonnaroo day passes and discuss the attendee experience of the Bourbon and Beyond Festival, after we gushed over the lineup last week and talked to Dan, who attended the festival in 2022.
The crew discusses Bourbon & Beyond’s consistently good lineups, but also explores the fest’s attempts to craft an immersive experience (with particular grievances when it comes to lines for water and restrooms). Having been there themselves, Bernardi and Dossett share their opinion on whom they think is the right type of audience for this festival.
In other festival news, Bonnaroo has brought back one-day passes! The crew discusses their return, as well as the introduction of a two-day option. We've also got tickets to give away. More on that in the coming weeks, so make sure you're subscribed to The What Podcast and visit thewhat.co/win for more info.

Why Moon River Festival Is Skipping 2024
After five years in Chattanooga, Tennessee, the Moon River Festival is hitting the pause button for 2024. Chattanooga Mayor Tim Kelly joins hosts Barry, Lord Taco, and Bryan Stone on The What Podcast to discuss possible reasons why.
Despite three sell-out years in Chattanooga, Moon River won’t be returning for what Mayor Kelly admits are complicated reasons. He points to the general impact of inflation, as well as the economics of a festival in 2024.
But while he hopes Moon River will return at some point in the future, he’s not waiting around for the stars to align. “I can tell you behind the scenes, we’re talking to some folks about trying to stand up something local,” Mayor Kelly says, noting the event would focus on “local and smaller artists.” “Because the consolidation of the festival business isn’t helpful to any of this either, because there aren’t enough entrants and competitors.”

Behind Bonnaroo's 2024 Lineup with C3 Presents (Part 2)
This week, The What Podcast is back with part two of last week’s peek behind the Bonnaroo 2024 curtain. Barry and Lord Taco are again joined by Brad Parker and Cory Smith from C3 Presents, the folks behind the fest, to discuss a variety of topics such as The Mars Volta, what makes Bonnaroo different from other festivals, and can’t-miss performances like TV Girl and Ethel Cain.
The group discusses the biggest positive and negative reactions to last year’s changes, particularly those made to ticketing and early entry. They also speak on how community events like The Roo Bus and Beer Exchange get integrated, as well as Jamtrak and how it will be tweaked. But of all the changes, they agree that what the festival changes most is lives, from attitudes to careers and beyond.
