The Autism Experience

By Ken Vu

In this podcast, I analyze and share my experiences growing up as an autistic person. In addition, I share my thoughts on social issues and other topics from the perspective of one autistic person. I hope to share my experiences with others out there and dedicate myself to complete honesty and respect for all my listeners and to myself.

S3E4: An Overview of My Personal Journey

S3E4: An Overview of My Personal Journey

PODCAST DESCRIPTION Hi, everyone! Welcome back to another episode from "The Autism Experience" before my two to three month break from this podcast (still going to be on Instagram, but not too often). In the spirit of Autism Awareness & Acceptance Month, I'll be sharing my own story about who I am and how I ended up hosting this podcast. I'll provide a brief overview of my own background as well as my own personal journey from childhood to young adulthood (which include discussions of bullying, being an early diagnosed autistic person, etc). As broad and genral as this podcast may be, I hope this podcast helps you all get a formal introduction to me and my podcast as well as understand my life story. At the end of the day, we all want a thriving and inclusive world where every person can be loved and supported and have the means to build and grow into our fully-realized selves. PODCAST DESCRIPTION

Hey, everyone! In this podcast, I'll be joined by Mackenzie Govaer, a fellow YouTuber who runs the YouTube channel Autistic Musings where she produces short videos on topics related to autism (i.e. cognitive empathy, stimming, etc). Throughout the podcast, we'll discuss and dive deeper into understanding the perceived differences in treatment and experiences between autistic boys and girls. We'll cover some insights we found in research on this particular topic as well as discuss some of the challenges of developing emotional intelligence not just in regards to autistic kids themselves, but for parents, teachers, and anyone else that interacts with them.

S2E1: How Autistics Might Relate to Walter Mitty

S2E1: How Autistics Might Relate to Walter Mitty

FYI: This podcast contains spoilers!

Hey, everyone!  Hope you all have a wonderful New Year!  Today, in this podcast, I'll go over the film "The Secret Life of Walter Mitty" (2013) and talk about some of the ways in which autistics might identify with Walter Mitty as personally, I did.  I felt that Walter Mitty as a character exhibited a lot of the beliefs and traits that I felt connected to my journey as a struggling autistic person trying to find my place in this world.

In addition to looking at that movie, I'll also cover some important updates regarding the podcast schedule for The Autism Experience in light of my recent acceptance into graduate school.

S1E3: Cognitive Empathy (and My Personal Updates)

S1E3: Cognitive Empathy (and My Personal Updates)

For today's podcast, I'll be giving some general updates about my own personal life, particularly some great news about my acceptance into graduate school. I'll also explore cognitive empathy (or a brief dive into it) - the ability to understand someone by thinking in their shoes. It's an integral aspect of many of the challenges of everyday autistic individuals as many of them lack the cognitive empathy skills to understand other subtle aspects of communication, which can make it difficult for them to really consider how a person might be feeling or accurately infer the intent behind their actions or words.

OFF THE RECORD - How I Wind Down for a Good Night's Sleep

OFF THE RECORD - How I Wind Down for a Good Night's Sleep

Hi everyone!  Welcome to another video in my series OFF THE RECORD.  In this video, I tell you guys about how I destress at the end of the day so i can sleep comfortably and get myself ready for the next day.    Before I go to bed, I meditate in complete silence and darkness for five minutes, focusing completely on my breathing (allowing the rest of my body to remain still and sort of numb).  This method allows me to embrace a moment of complete stillness and calm, especially in an ever busy schedule overwhelmed with information and a lot of moving about.    Once those five minutes are up, I stop breathing, I slowly open my eyes, I slowly look around, I listen to a specific sound I can pick out for 10 seconds, and then I gently breathe in and out through my nose (based on the SLLS or Stop, Look, Listen, Smell method used in the military and hunting parties).  This trick helps me to refresh my senses and keep myself mentally and spiritually aware and connected with my surroundings.

S1E2: Understanding Autism Masking

S1E2: Understanding Autism Masking

Hi everyone! Coming back to this show is a wonderful new podcast on a rather new subject I began to learn more about - autism masking (the act of hiding or concealing parts of your autistic behavior in order to fit in better). In this podcast, I lay out the definition of autism masking and how it relates to the everyday experiences of some autistic individuals in a predominantly neurotypical society. I also explore some of the common causes of autism masking, some of the ways it takes a mental toll on the individual's mental health, and how it could be useful for successful everyday living!

S1E1: My Time with Best Buddies in Retrospect

S1E1: My Time with Best Buddies in Retrospect

Hi everyone! It's been a while since I did my last podcast so here's a brand new podcast for this "soft reboot" of The Autism Experience. In this podcast, I discuss my time in Best Buddies International, an organization dedicated to fostering bonds between volunteers and inviduals with learning and developmental disabilities. I go over how I discovered Best Buddies at San Jose State University and why I decided to join the organization in addition to some of the most memorable experiences I've had in it, including my involvement in the peer buddy system where I eventually became friends with a wonderfully talented and theater-minded buddy.
