Defining Creativity | S8E3
Okay, now we have self-imposed Limitations out of the way. We know there are some underpinnings to what leads us to roadblocks.
And, and we know the roadblocks are temporary, and we can work past them.
Now, I want to know, how do you define creativity?
The textbook definition of being creative doesn’t matter right now.
Think of what creativity means to you. How you define creativity. Write it down right now.

Self Imposed Limitations | S8E2
When I started this podcast I had tons I wanted to say. My drive to Crete episodes, create content, share with you all what motived me as a creative, as a person, a professional, and a student was through the roof. I’ve made it to season 8, and I am feeling like I said all that I needed to say. I’ve shared it all. OF course I am experiencing new things everyday. But as we all do from time to time, we hit a rough patch or a road block when it comes to inspiration, productivity, and creativity. Right now I am hitting a wall right. I am at a roadblock, and the logical thing to do is to figure out how to work past this road block. This road block has me thinking about self-imposed limitation. The limitation that I’ve created for myself, that are right now, in this moment, hindering me from finding solutions to move past this roadblock. And that is what we are going to be talking about today, self-imposed limitations. I am your host Don, Welcome to the Creative.

Achievement, Impacts, and Lessons | Welcome To Season 8 | S8E1
Over the past couple of decades, I have collected a fair amount of achievements. I have not had the chance to reflect on my achievements due to not slowing down but speeding up and jumping on to the next experience as fast as humanly possible.
I am still trying to determine if this is a me thing. How I am as a person.
Is it cultural, societal, without looking for someone to blame for my lack of attention, but a way to determine what fuels my need to experience and achieve rapidly and linearly? I call this running a million miles a minute. Doing this has robbed me of really understanding what I have accomplished.
I am sure I am not the only one. Most of us fail to acknowledge our own achievements. Although we celebrate them, imposter syndrome is always there, and the feeling of doubt is not too far behind.
This could be because of how we criticize ourselves due to high standards set by ourselves and others. Feel like we are moving too slow, that we are behind, and when we actually accomplish our goal, we shoot it down, we minimize it, it becomes this thing that no longer has value. We bury it, and we move forward...

Fear of the unknown | Fear of Starting Something New
Welcome back, if you are new here welcome, I am your host Don, and for today’s episode, I will be talking about the fear of starting something new. We can sometimes get stuck in a routine, because it is familiar, and starting something new can be scary, stressful, and uncomfortable, although we know the benefits of these new things. I am saying this because I’ve been stuck in a loop as to when TheCreative should transition to covering other topics outside of mental health and productivity. There are some benefits, and downsides to making the transitions, but what is creativity without taking some risks?

Taking Action
Fear and self-doubt are two main reasons why we fail to take action even though we know we should. It is also, waiting for the right time, fear of change, waiting for others to catch up to our speed of change, maybe not adjusting to change fast enough, and another big one is procrastination.
You could even say procrastination is one of the leading causes of failure to take action. But let’s take a closer look at procrastination. Why are you procrastinating? Is it because you don’t really want whatever it is you are working towards? Are you working towards a goal that you believe other will approve of you once you reach this goal? Are you working towards a goal because you truly want to achieve this goal? Or because you done know what else to do?

How To Stay Motivated | What to do in the face of uncertainty!
Staying motivated is simple. You can stay motivated by Tracking what your motivations are. Track them by the time of day, week, quarter, year, or month and over time see if they correlate based on the time of year. There you go, its that simple, but not really.
Let’s get into it

Self Care | How To Do Self-Care
How to do self-care? Self-care is probably a term you’ve been hearing a lot lately. You probably hear it at work, in class, from your therapist, at the doctors office, social media, or a commercial.
If you haven’t hear of self-care, then you’ve probably heard some variation. Something along the lines of self-help, personal care, self maintenance.
You’ve been hearing these phrases a lot, but what do they actually mean.
Self-care is another way to say self-preservation, which means to protect yourself from harm or death. To do self-care is to preserve your health, to improve your health, mentally and physically.
Check out today's episode for more information on self-care.

Reaching Your Goals | Tracking goals over time
Setting goals can be a tricky process, especially when there are unforeseen obstacles that are just waiting to jump out of the woodwork. The best solution for this is to plan for the unexpected. Expect that at some point you will be held up by some unknown event, and somehow you are supposed to plan for it. Which is easier said than done.
Okay, so another solution is to set a goal, break it down into milestones, and break the milestones down into smaller goals. By doing this you can track your progress even when there are obstacles and set backs you are able to track your progress, pick up where you left off, and keep tracking forward.
Okay, there are the solutions, for whenever the unexpected decides to come over for a visit.
But how do you actually reach your goals. Set a goal and see it through to fruition?

Welcome to Season 7 | Graduate School Struggles
Graduate School Struggles are real. Education is highly recommended worldwide, but the struggles that come along with graduate school aren't talked about by the recommenders. In many cases, we are encouraged to get an education by family, and relatives who may not have gotten the opportunity to get an education, so they do not know much about the experience. What they do know is the status that comes along with it. Graduate school is hard. It is a series of regurgitations, oversimplification, needless explanations, and hot air blowing. That is the graduate school experience in a nutshell, from my perspective. I am not saying this to discourage anyone from experience the graduate school experience. But there will be struggles, and times where you want to burn all of your books. But, that is the nature of the graduate school. To push you past your limits until you break, and then learn to rebuild yourself. Not during your time in the program, but afterward while you are starting your new career. Graduate school struggles go beyond the graduate school itself. You will not come out the same, but you will have a more positive perspective on how you spend your time.
According to an article publish Wei Li there is a mental health crisis in academia. Graduate students are six times more likely to experience depression and anxiety than the general population. 36% of students have sought help for depression or anxiety caused by their studies. I can go on about this for days, but that is a story for another episode, if you would like me to cover this sooner send me an email or reach out to me over on Instagram. All links are in the show notes. And the link to Wei Li’s article

I just want to jump in here and say if you like to read, support your local book store. Before the pandemic I enjoyed either sitting in a book store of a near by coffee shop and read or work. I know it is easy to download a book or renting them online, but there is nothing like walking through a used book store, smelling the new and old book smell, even the authentic must of book store and finding a book you may not have even though you were looking for. You might be thinking, why would I buy a book, what would I do with them all, you can pass it own to someone you think might like it, or donate it back to the book store and call it a rental. So Get out there and let me know what you find

The benefits of arts and crafts as a hobby
The benefits of arts and crafts as a hobby.
Welcome back, if you are new here welcome. I am your host Don, and for today’s episode I will be talking about the benefits of arts and crafts and having a hobby. Let’s get into it.
I want to start this one out by saying that arts and crafts is a great way to relieve stress, especially after a long day. If you have kids, and you want to spend some time with them away from technology, go to your local dollar store, and grab a coloring book and some inexpensive crayons or color pencils, some scissors and be imaginative and create. Even if you don’t have any kids, give it a go. And there you have it, arts an craft as a hobby.
In this episode, I will be referring to creativity in the realm of artistic creativity. Hence, the title of the episode is getting into arts and crafts as a hobby.
Benefits of Arts and Crafts
MiNDFOOD
According to MindFood there are 6 Benefits of Arts and Crafts
Stress’s relief, confidence boost, increased empathy, improves quality of life, enhances brain productivity, and lessens effect of serious health conditions.
https://www.mindfood.com/article/the-benefits-of-arts-and-crafts/
Research
According to (Adams-Price & Morse, 2018) creation of crafts by Middle Aged and Older Adults are generally accepted in all cultures around the world except for in western culture. Participating in arts and crafts have, also known as hobbies, have long-term health benefits. Such increasing mood, increasing energy levels, and increasing physical health. A hobby can be anything like hiking, swimming, walking, writing, drawing, singing, painting. There were a series of studies done by the Synapse Project that demonstrates that older adults who spend several hours a week for a few months learning to participate in a new craft activity showed improvements in their cognitive performance and neural efficiency compared to adults who did not. Adams and Price found that participation in arts and crafts increases life satisfaction. In their study they found there were four factors that were important in increasing life satisfaction which are identity, spirituality, calming, mastery and recognition of master from others. I can go on and on about this, but long tangent short, arts and crafts has and impact on how me function mentally which impacts how we function physically, and this has been proven in various studies highlighting the importance arts, crafts, and hobbies and how the positive impact they have mentally, physical, and socially.

We are nearly in the middle of the 2nd quarter of 2021, the sun is out, and this is the time where, if you live in a region with all four seasons, this is the time be outside. The time where you shed all the layers and go out into the world. Hopefully exploring while keeping in mid COVID, because the last I checked it is still a thing. What I have learned from this experience is that you can never over prepare for anything, but you can under-prepare. If that’s a word. It has been a journey, and I started this podcast on this journey, and you’ve all been here for it. Just Talk
Forewarning, I am going to be all over the place today, I’d like to talk about a few things today that are centered around the following topics.
Careers
Jobs
Gigs
Freelance work
Education
Being a student
Self advocacy
And hobbies.
Lets get into it.
Which are all categories that encompasses the work part of work and life. You know the other 75% of what we do in order to have a life.
This episode is for everyone, and it is especially for the overachievers, the perfectionists, the workaholics.
There has been a rise in perfectionism over the past 4 decades now. There was a study done by Thomas Curran and Andrew Hill called Perfectionism Is Increasing Over Time: A Meta-Analysis of Birth Cohort Differences From 1989 to 2016. Long story short they found that perfectionism has been on a rise since the 80s.
According to research published by the American Psychological Association the drive to be perfect has increased and has had an impact in physical and mental health.
Everyone I know is a perfectionist in their own right.
I am a perfectionist. I have a criteria or standards in which everything I produce have to meet personally and professionally m. Now over the teas I’ve come to terms with the fact that not everything will meet those standards so I’ve become a little more lenient with putting out what I produce and accepting it as good enough but that took years and I am still struggling with it.
Types of Perfectionism
Perfectionism comes in three common flavors — “self-oriented,” where someone demands perfection from themselves; “other-oriented,” where they demand perfection from others around them (like spouses, co-workers or friends), and “socially prescribed” perfectionism, where the person feels external pressure from the larger world and society to be perfect.

Balancing Creativity | How To Balance Time for Creativity
What does balance look like for you? Is it hard for you to fond balance in your life? I know COVID has been like throwing salt in the wound for some, and for others it may have been that needed break to do more self care. I know here in Chicago I've noticed a lot more runners. Out there getting a few miles in before work. I am sure working from home and saving some time but cutting your commute time by 100 percent has been a super benefit.

Welcome to Season 5 | The Creative Self
Last season was meant to highlight creative types, and this season I want to build on that and explore the self as the creative. We are all creative or can be creative in how we think, in our actions, and I want to highlight that by finding ways to flex the creative muscle, by prioritizing creativity, by showing up for your creativity, inserting creativity into your daily routine. When it comes to exploring the self there is always something new to learn, to expand the mind by thinking creativity, and having fun.
If you got anything out of this episode rate it and leave a comment, it would help me know what you like, what you did not like, what to implement into the show, and also it would be greatly appreciated. I want to thank you for joining me today. I'll be back here next week on Wednesday, I will see you then stay awesome.

Creative Types | What's To Come For Season 4
As I was thinking of the topic for today´s episode, this had come to mind, and it got me thinking about my past creative processes and wondering about my creative type. A lot has happened this year, and ending this season isn't an end, it is the start of a new. 2020 So Far | How To Stay Grounded When Everything Else Is Up In The Air
I feel this year has sped by. The were some slow parts, some dangerous parts, which we are still experiencing, and some shocking parts. What’s a year without shock, without the propaganda, without the pain and suffering. But, without pain, suffering, failure, etc. would there be creativity?

Getting Stared | How To Get Started
Getting started can be the hardest part of the creative process. Especially during the time where you’ve expended all of your creative reserve on your last project. Maybe that's not you, maybe you are just not starting out and you want to know how to get started. As you are listening to this episode you are probably looking up 'How To's' on how to do what it is that you are trying to get started on.
Even if this episode is your last stop of the day, today Don will skip all the fluff and get right to it.

Knowing When To Quit | Acceptance
Culturally you are told to never quit, because quitters never win. It has been engrained in you. It is second nature. Right when you think about quitting, a slew of thoughts rush in, and that quitting is an option is the core theme of those thoughts.
Today Don will be talking about the process of considering quitting one thing, and starting something to new.
