Episode 53 Using Food as Fuel, Not Comfort

Episode 53 Using Food as Fuel, Not Comfort

In this episode of The Diabetic Toolbox, host Renee Reid dives into the transformative power of using food as fuel and medicine rather than for comfort. By shifting our approach to eating, we can take a big step toward better diabetes management, improved energy, and long-lasting health. Renee shares insights on seeing food as a tool to nourish and support the body instead of a source of emotional comfort and provides three practical tips to help listeners make this change in their lives.

Key Points

See Food as Fuel

Balanced meals with fiber, protein, and healthy fats provide steady energy and help prevent blood sugar spikes and crashes.

Choosing food based on how it nourishes can keep cravings in check.

Use Food as Medicine

Food can play a role in reducing inflammation and improving insulin sensitivity, making it easier to manage diabetes.

Adding non-starchy veggies, lean proteins, and whole grains can make a big impact on your health.

Practice Mindful Eating to Manage Emotions

Emotional eating can lead to blood sugar challenges, but mindful eating helps break this cycle.

Checking your feelings before eating can help you make more intentional choices.

Episode 43: Sunday Inspiration -My Soul Remains Calm

In our latest episode of The Diabetic Toolbox podcast, we delve into the power of calmness and resilience, crucial for managing diabetes and overall well-being. Here's a quick summary of what we discussed:

Affirmation: "My soul remains calm."

Quote for Today: "I fight for my health every day in ways that most people don't understand. I'm not lazy. I'm a warrior." – Unknown.

We explored how cultivating inner peace empowers us to face daily challenges gracefully. One effective way to achieve this is through deep belly breathing. Here's a quick guide to get you started:

1. Find a Comfortable Position: Sit or lie comfortably, ensuring your back is straight and your shoulders are relaxed.

2. Place Your Hands: Place one hand on your chest and the other on your belly.

3. Inhale Deeply: Take a slow, deep breath through your nose, allowing your belly to rise as you fill your lungs with air.

4. Exhale Slowly: Breathe through your mouth, letting your belly fall gently.

5. Repeat: Continue this pattern for 5-10 minutes, focusing on the rise and fall of your belly with each breath.

Incorporating this simple practice into your daily routine can help you maintain a sense of calm and strengthen your resilience.

Myth 1: Overeating Sugar Causes Diabetes

Fact: Sugar alone does not cause diabetes.

Episode 31 Diabetes and Sleep: What You Need to Know

Hello friends,

Today we are talking about the connection between diabetes and sleep; according to the Sleep Foundation, adults need between seven and nine hours of sleep. Are you getting enough sleep each night? Research conducted by the Centers for Disease Control found that one in three adults in the U.S. does not get enough sleep, which increases the risk of type 2 diabetes, heart disease, obesity, and depression.  If you are not feeling rested when you rise up in the morning, today's episode will give you some tips to help you get the rest you need to manage your diabetes and overall health. Sleep is restorative and one of the most underrated and natural tools to heal our bodies and manage our weight. Enjoy!

Episode 28: When Was Your Last Check-up? Four Health Screenings for Men Over 50

Episode 28: When Was Your Last Check-up? Four Health Screenings for Men Over 50

Hello, my friends,

In today's episode, we are talking about the four health screenings that every man over 50 should include in the annual or semi-annual check-up.

A study conducted by the Cleveland Clinic found that 65 percent of men avoid going to the doctor for as long as possible.  Today, we are talking about the four-health screenings every man over 50 should be sure to include in their yearly physical.  There are necessary medical screenings that should be conducted annually or semi-annually. This is a conversation you can have with your doctor so you know the best route to take.  To live a healthy and fulfilling life, being proactive is crucial to prevent life-threatening illnesses.

This is especially true once you turn 50. This is because many illnesses begin to surface after 50, and early detection can result in rapid treatment and life-saving results.  Be sure you are current on your family’s medical history. It might be necessary to start these screenings earlier than 50.

In this episode, you will learn the importance of :

  1. Prostate Exam
  2. High Blood Pressure Check
  3. Cholesterol screenings
  4. A1C blood test

Our sons and daughters are watching how well we take care of ourselves; we are their role models for life, including how we care for our health.

With Peace & Love,

Renee

Episode 24 Losing Belly Fat, the Healthy Way

Hello friends, today we are talking about how to lose belly fat and improve our overall health.  In this episode, I am sharing some easy-to-implement tools to help you win the battle of the bulge.   Looking cute in a bathing suit isn’t the only reason to be concerned about belly fat. Packing on excess pounds around your middle raises your risk of high blood pressure, heart disease, diabetes, and certain cancers. It is especially dangerous when your spare tire includes visceral fat surrounding your heart, lungs, liver, and other organs.

Remember that you can have too much visceral fat even if you’re thin, so measure your waistline to be sure it’s under 35 inches for women and 40 inches for men. Hormonal changes, a sedentary lifestyle, and mindless eating all promote weight gain around your middle.  You can reduce this unhealthy fat with simple lifestyle changes.

With Peace & Love,

Renee

21. Diabetes & Gut Health

Hello friends, today we are talking about the connection between your gut health and successfully managing prediabetes or type 2 diabetes.  70-80 percent of your immune cells are in your gut; an unhealthy gut can promote insulin sensitivity and inflammation, and insulin is the primary hormone that controls your blood sugar; by strengthening your gut and reducing inflammation, you have a better chance of stabilizing your blood sugar daily. In addition, research has shown that when the microbiome is not healthy, it can cause the walls of your gut to weaken, leaving space where toxins, bacteria, and partially digested food can leak into the bloodstream causing leaky gut syndrome.

I am sharing some simple tips to help you improve your gut health, lower your blood sugar, and reduce inflammation.  Don't forget to share this episode with a friend and follow the blog at www.thediabetictoolbox.com, so you don't miss an episode.
