South Florida! Join me on Friday, April 26th for a moderated discussion with Giovanna González-Chávez, aka Gigi The First Gen Mentor, author of Cultura & Cash! This is the LAST stop in her book tour! If you’re in the area, you definitely want to be there! Register for FREE here. __ Today’s episode is another Financial Literacy Month conversation, this time with Money Coach Aqura Nicholson. Earning more money doesn’t automatically mean you know how to manage more money. This is something that both Aqura and I had to learn the hard way. In this episode, we talk about the lessons we have learned in our careers and wealth-building journeys. I share how deciding to buy a home was the catalyst that led to me doubling my salary in 10 months, and why this required an internal shift in how I think about money. Aqura emphasizes the need for intentionality in earning more money and the power of financial independence for our communities. We also discuss the misconceptions around working in tech and the transferable skills that can be leveraged to break into the industry. About today's guest: Aqura Nicholson is a money coach empowering part-time and full-time women entrepreneurs to master their money right now, so it will serve them at the next income level. Motivated by her own family’s paycheck to paycheck cycle, it became her mission to break this generational cycle and show other women how they can do the same– even if they have debt, struggle with saving, or tend to be overspenders. Aqura makes money simple, easy, and unrestrictive by helping women to embrace a guilt-free approach to earning, managing, and spending money. www.linkedin.com/in/aquranicholson  Connect with Aqura on Instagram via @aquranicholson  LinkedIn: www.linkedin.com/in/aquranicholson  Resources and Links Private 1:1 Coaching: https://calendly.com/thefirstgencoach/discovery-call  Download your FREE Resume Guide and Template  Follow @CarlaTheFirstGenCoach on Instagram

91. The Ugly Truth About Doubling Your Salary

This episode is a behind the scenes look at the struggles and insecurities I experienced when I more than doubled my salary in 10 months. I talk about the risk that I took in accepting a short-term contract position and how I was able to use that contract as an opportunity to break into and learn more about the tech sector.  With Financial Literacy Month kicking off this week, I wanted to acknowledge that it’s not always a knowledge gap. Sometimes you have all the information you need, but there might be deeply ingrained fears and limiting beliefs that are preventing you from taking action.

85. Career Lessons from a Marketing Funnel

This episode is all about the job offer funnel! This is a framework I developed while studying the marketing a sales funnel that takes customers from aware of a product to a loyal customer. In your job search, you are similarly moving random strangers from aware of you and your skills, to loyal managers that are incentivizing you to stay on their team. There are seven steps to this funnel. In this episode I discuss each of them in detail as well as the actions you can take to ensure you are moving not just to the job offer stage, but to a place where you are in a values-aligned role and getting paid top dollar for your skills and experience.

84. Turning Casual Conversations into Job Interviews

Job interviews don’t always come after you apply to a job. Sometimes, you may be having a casual conversation, but your story and the way you speak are so captivating, that the person you’re speaking starts thinking about ways they could bring you on to their team. THAT is how you can turn a casual conversation into a job interview. In this episode, I share examples of how to do this. I also talk about the power of owning your greatness and why getting comfortable talking about yourself is the key to advancing your career and increasing your salary.

77. Grieving the Career You Thought You'd Have

Our careers are deeply personal. Not only do we spend about 40 hours per week in our chosen career, there is usually significant preparation and planning that goes into choosing that career. It’s also normal to envision the type of life you’ll have as you progress in that career.  But careers, like most things in life, rarely go as planned, particularly when you’re a first gen professional who is learning to navigate the workforce without that generational knowledge that many of your colleagues have. That means that plans change. And when a plan that you were deeply excited about changes, it’s normal to grieve.  In this episode, I talk about grieving the career you thought you would have. Even if the new path you’re taking is exciting, it’s normal to feel multiple, often conflicting emotions. You have to hold space for all the emotions, even the ones that aren’t super fun.  Resources and Links Private 1:1 Coaching: https://calendly.com/thefirstgencoach/discovery-call  Download your FREE Resume Guide and Template  Follow @CarlaTheFirstGenCoach on Instagram

74. What to do before a job interview

74. What to do before a job interview

In this episode, I describe what to do before an interview so you can actually show up feeling calm, prepared, and confident. This is the exact process I use to prepare for when I am interviewing. I share how I help my clients adapt this process to best fit their needs, and how you can adapt it to your unique situation. I cover everything from getting into the right state of mind to knowing what questions to ask them. Remember that you are interviewing them too, so make sure you are ready to grill them as you prepare to interview the interviewer.  Related Episodes:  57. What to Say in a Job Interview 22. 73. Job Hopping Every 15 Months with Janzel Manalansan

73. Job Hopping Every 15 Months with Janzel Manalansan

In this episode I interview my dear friend and first gen tech baddie Janzel Manalansan. Janzel is an early 30’s Filipino-American eldest daughter of immigrants who has leveraged her network and transferable skills to job hop every 15 months. One of the things I love about Janzel and why I invited her to the show is that she is so genuine in her approach to building relationships with people and so fantastic at advocating for herself. She talks about both of these things on the show as she shares her trajectory from public service to law to tech. She also talks about the importance and benefits of asking other people for help and how to grow your career by talking to people you want to talk to and being in places you want to be in.  About today's guest: Janzel is an early 30’s Filipino-American eldest daughter of immigrants.  She’s the first in her family to go to college, getting her Political Science - Public Service Bachelors from the University of California Davis in 2014.  She’s always been the kind of person who challenges her paradigms of the world and herself, with a focus on communities, whether leveraging, growing or celebrating them. Janzel originally planned on being an attorney to serve local communities, but after trying out both Big Law and smaller firms she pivoted her career to tech, for financial reasons, better work life balance and to follow her heart to San Francisco where her then long distance boyfriend resided.  She and her husband moved back home to Southern California in the pandemic and enjoy exploring coffee shops with their 3 year old goldendoodle Nova.
