Patreon Preview: Presumption; or, the Fate of Frankenstein by Richard Brinsley Peake
We thought we'd start sharing the first few minutes of our Patreon episodes here on the main feed to give everyone a taste of what you can expect if you join us at patreon.com/thefrankencast.
I don't know why it's taken us so long to get to this one. This play is basically the ur-text of Frankenstein adaptations, coming out so early that it predates Mary Shelley's famed 1831 rerelease of the Frankenstein novel. In fact, we know from her letters and journals that Mary actually attended a performance of the play, and approved. Join us as we look at this economic adaptation that manages to incorporate more sub-plots and secondary characters than the average Frankenstein adaptation!
141. Phantom of the Paradise (1974) Brian De Palma
If this week's movie isn't a Frankenstein story, it is at the very least a Frankenstein Monster of a story, mashing Faust, Picture of Dorian Gray, Phantom of the Opera, Dracula, and (yes, even) Frankenstein together into something that's also kind of the Rocky Horror Picture Show? It's the best kind of crazy mess. Join us at the Paradise where you definitely (probably) won't get attacked by a vengeful Phantom in a spooky bird mask.

I recently recovered an old box of childhood books from my mom's garage. It was mostly Goosebumps books, but I did also find two different abridged for children versions of Frankenstein. This week, sit back and relax as I read you a bedtime story. This is the Random House Bullseye Chillers version of Frankenstein, adapted by Larry Weinberg.
He created a monster... of death!
140. The Bride (1985) dir. Franc Roddam
It's the most 1980s movie ever to be set in the 1800s! Join us as the "Every Breath You Take" guy makes monsters out of the Kurgan and the Flashdance girl. We were actually pleasantly surprised by the depth and resonance of this spiritual sequel to James Whale's Bride of Frankenstein that sort of paved the way for last year's Poor Things film.

It's our penultimate episode of The Munsters Today season 1, and we have two very werewolf-centric episodes. Join as The Munsters meet long-lost cousin Wolfgang (or do they?) Also, Eddie takes singing lessons and Herman learns martial arts?
139. The Abominations of Frankenstein (2021) dir. Sébastien Godin
This week we're looking at an overlooked modern-day low-budget Frankenstein story. Join us as we vape out of an Army surplus gas mask, get humiliated by the ghost of Mary Shelley, and get decapitated just in time for the romantic happy ending.

Patreon Teaser: Frankenews - The State of Frank
We thought we'd start sharing the first few minutes of our Patreon episodes here on the main feed to give everyone a taste of what you can expect if you join us at patreon.com/thefrankencast.
Seems like there's new Frankenstein related news coming every day, and we thought it would be nice to just sit down and chat about some of the things on our radar, particularly the two big budget films coming out next year from Guillermo del Toro and Maggie Gyllenhaal. We talk about what we know, what we're excited about, and what we're worried about.
138. Frankenstein Meets the Space Monster (1965) dir. Robert Gaffney
"Do you think we're robot clean/ Does this face look almost mean/ Is it time to be an android not a man?"
This week, it's time for some 60s space-age nonsense. So join us for bikini babes on the beach, a guy in a gorilla suit, rock-n-roll dance parties, and a bald little freak from space. And SO much archival B-roll.

We're getting ever nearer the end of season one of The Munsters Today and this week, we've got two absolute banger episodes. Roger and DeeDee Nelson really establish themselves as series regulars in "Neighborly Munsters" and we are absolutely froked about it. Also, we meet this series' version of Uncle Gil and he's just some weirdo painted green? And it's kinda great?
137. May (2002) dir. Lucky McKee
Do you hear that sound? Like glass cracking? I'm sure it's nothing. Join us as we celebrate the month of May with some untreated mental illness, a Central Casting 80s punk, and a dog that definitely (probably) had all four legs last time we checked.

So, I accidentally stumbled upon this delightful abridged interpretation of Frankenstein performed with paper bag puppets and was surprised to discover it was created here in the Frankencast's hometown of Louisville, KY by the Louisville Free Public Library. So of course we had to share this with you all.
Check out the video at: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g1E-0mx1Yp4 and show our local library some love!
136. Gods and Monsters (1998) dir. Bill Condon
Here at the Frankencast, we've spent a lot of time talking about the Mother of Frankenstein, Mary Shelley, but we haven't really talked much about the Father of Frankenstein, James Whale. It's high-time we remedied that, so here we are talking about the Academy Award winning fictional retelling of the last days of Whale's life. Join us as we talk about some heavy topics and pay tribute to the man who is at least partially responsible for the nearly endless supply of Frankenstein films that allows us to do this show.

As we near the end of season one of the Munsters Today, the timeline is getting very confusing. We had some good character development going, and now this week we have all kinds of returning characters acting like they've never met before. Maybe it's Grandpa's fault somehow?
Join us for "Two Left Feet" and "Lights Camera Munsters".
135. Frankenstein Unbound (1990) dir. Roger Corman
The Frankencast finally meets exploitation legend Roger Corman! And things get... unbound? Join us as we use up an entire talking car printer cartridge, make the worst time traveler choices ever, and use the most futuristic technology imaginable: The Clapper™️ (As Seen on TV).

We did an April Fools a few weeks ago, and we kinda wanted to take the bandages off and talk about the process. Why we did it, what we learned, and will we do it again? Find out all that and more in this post-mortem chat.
134. Steel and Lace (1990) dir. Ernest Farino
This week we're doing a somewhat overlooked late 80s action/revenge flick, and things get surprisingly deep. Join us as we sound 1,000 years old while talking about courtroom sketch artists and beepers and other rad classics of the 1980s. But there's a lot of really cool gory deaths?

133. Frankenstein vs. The Mummy (2015) dir. Damien Leone
The Frankencast boys are back! We may have had to fight off a mummy to get here, but these are the lengths that we go to just to bring you all the Frankenstein content you crave. Join us at the Production Value Factory as we learn chloroform phonics, collect a big ol' pile of Chekhov's callbacks, and have a good old fashioned MONSTER FIGHT!

What are the Munsters up to Today? Seems like mostly hurting each other's feelings and then learning valuable lessons. All except Marilyn who seems to have forgotten everything she's ever known? Join us at Motel 666 for a mummy who's a talent agent. We'll be serving Houdini Cake!
Patreon Preview: Doctor Who - The Haunting of Villa Diodati
We thought we'd start sharing the first few minutes of our Patreon episodes here on the main feed to give everyone a taste of what you can expect if you join us at patreon.com/thefrankencast.
Doctor Who? We just watched Ken Russell's Gothic, so we thought it seemed appropriate to take a look at the time that The Doctor met Mary Shelley, and it was kind of underwhelming. Join us as we somehow never see the TARDIS, completely ignore Mary Shelley to focus on Percy, and then kind of not really pay much attention to Percy either.
The Mummycast episode 132: Bubba Ho-Tep (2002) dir. Don Coscarelli
It's time to Take Care of Business with the King! Join us as we take a trip to a little nursing home in scenic Mud Creek, TX. Pick your favorite historical figure, fact or fiction, dress the part, and join us in the dining hall for some appropriately soft dinner, say around 4:00pm? We'll bring the stolen dessert, you bring the Battle Bed Pan.
Oh, and happy... early April?
Your Horror Hosts: Anthony Bowman (he/him) & Eric Velazquez (he/him).
131. Gothic (1986) dir. Ken Russell
Sorry for making things weird. Join us this week as we see what Ken Russell imagines it was like at Villa Diodati as Mary Shelley was inspired to write Frankenstein. Turns out it's mostly like a bad drug trip with some horny moments in there to keep things interesting. Join us as we dance with a robot stripper, talk to our leeches, and finally get to see a depiction of Percy Shelley's famous scary vision. (Hot.)

Well, they can't all be winners. This week we join the Munsters as they're forced to open a bed and breakfast and (of course) do a pretty terrible job. We also learn what happens when Lily gets the flu, which is apparently that the entire family completely falls apart? Be prepared for Munsters actung very un-Munster-like. Better luck next time?
130. The Frankenstein Theory (2013) dir. Andrew Weiner
Oh, hey, we found some footage. Wanna take a look at this footage that we found? Join us as we go on a hunt for the Blair Wi... uh, Frankenstein. It's basically a whole, uh, "project". Along the way, we'll meet a guy who is totally NOT Chekhov's Pedestrian, a guy who was just kickin' it with Frankenstein (and definitely NOT doing any meth), and a creepy doll in the world's least chill yurt.

Oh, and then Grandpa finds a girlfriend on the 1980s version of Tinder. Just Munsters doin' Munster stuff. Outrageous!
128. Chicano Frankenstein - Daniel A. Olivas (2024)

We've been visiting a lot of classic Saturday morning cartoons lately, and here's one that is maybe a little less well-known, but is absolutely seared into the brains of your Horror Hosts. We're talking about a few segments from the classic Mario animated series. Long before Chris Pratt and Jack Black faced off as dueling video game characters, there was Captain Lou Albano and Danny Wells dancing around in their rundown Brooklyn apartment. Join us as we Do The Mario, altogether!

In an 80s laugh-track sitcom? This week Grandpa accidentally becomes a teacher and Herman accidentally becomes a medical oddity. Just another day with The Munsters!

Surely something else happened in there. Well, at least it was fun to talk about.

This week: Is... is The Munsters Today good actually? After the last two really solid episodes, this week we have two more bangers. And this time they even kinda feel like classic Munsters plots, first with a silly cameo in "Herman the Astronaut" (real-life astronaut Gordon Cooper. You know, Gordon Cooper, the astronaut we all know and love?) and then with a visit from a groovy rock band in "Rock Fever". Oh, also the Munsters do a rap. Don't you want to hear the Munsters do a rap?
124. Lust For Frankenstein (1998) dir. Jesús Franco
Happy Valentines Day, fiends! Are you ready to get... confusedly horny? Join us for this very weird late-era Franco film. We'll be hanging out with the incomprehensible Ghost Dad of Frankenstein, a beautiful nasty puppet, and the illusive Always-Nude. We apologize in advance.

Inspired by Philip J. Reed's book The Wolf Man, from DieDie Books, we had to check out this strange curiosity from the days of live television "playhouse"-style programs. This live adaptation of Frankenstein starring Lon Chaney Jr. near the end of his life has a bit of a reputation among genre fans. Join us as we discuss this short film, it's reputation, and hopefully adequately honor a man who suffered a lot and still managed to give us monster kids so many brilliant performances.
123. I, Frankenstein (2014) dir. Stuart Beattie
*Epic Music Kicks In* Every man has a right to defend their life. But is a Frankenstein monster a man? I don't know. 121. What's Frankenstein?
We're awfully busy at the Frankencast Lab, so enjoy this, our very first Patreon episode!
If you're doing a podcast where you just talk about Frankenstein and Frankenstein-adjacent movies all the time, it's important to figure out what exactly counts as a Frankenstein movie.
In this spiritual sequel to "Why Frankenstein?", one of our most popular early episodes, join us as we talk about what's Frankenstein and what isn't. We go to some weird places and talk ourselves into adding some movies to our list that we're less than excited about.
We also laugh more than any other episode we've ever recorded. It's a good time.
Let us know in the comments if you agree or disagree with any of our thoughts. And tell us if you have any suggestions of other movies that should count as Frankenstein films. The more we have, the longer we can keep doing this!

After a nice holiday break, we're back at the hard work of reading some edgy late 90s comics. This week we're reading issues 3, 4, and 5 of the 8-part mini-series. And unfortunately it hasn't gotten much better. Join us as we buy some good ol' fashioned American guns for our multiversal conquest, have trouble displaying our Medusa-ness (but not our hotness), and meet The Devil, from The Bible.

Join us this week as Herman goes back to school in "Magna Cum Munsters" and Lily tries to get a job in "Designing Munsters". We have one really solid episode and one controversial(??) episode... can you guess which is which?

Patreon Preview: Creature Commandos 2000 pt. 1

We had so much fun with the original run of DC's Creature Commandos that we thought we'd check out the reboot from the year 2000. Spoiler alert: we're having a lot less fun with this version. But all our old favs are back, especially "Lucky" Taylor, aka Patchwork, the edgy late-90s hero name that our perpetually sad hero needed.
116. The Munsters' Scary Little Christmas (1996) dir. Ian Emes
Happy Holidays, fiends! We know we promised a different movie this week, but the holidays are all about changing plans, especially when there are gifts involved. And we sure do have a gift for y'all this week! Join us for this delightful Christmas with America's Favorite Family, we'll be singing Christmas carols while running, reading Chekhov's letter to Santa, ruining Christmas for a biker domme, and absolutely, positively NOT eating the fruitcake.

Patreon Preview: The Munsters Today episodes 2 & 3
We thought we'd start sharing the first few minutes of our Patreon episodes here on the main feed to give everyone a taste of what you can expect if you join us at patreon.com/thefrankencast.
This week, we've returned with more of The Munsters Today, and it feels like they're all still kinda getting the hang of things. We're a little better off that in the previous episodes, but they still haven't recaptured the magic of the original series. We're still holding out hope though. This week Grandpa makes a dumb decision, then doubles down on it some really stupid ways, and then Eddie goes mad with power. Join us, won't you?
115. Scream and Scream Again (1970) dir. Gordon Hessler
Look out, fiends, it's our first Amicus Productions film, and this club has everything: the Holy Trinity of gothic horror, some off-brand Nazis, a super-spy with a Vulcan death grip, Chekhov's acid bath, and the very scary murderous Vampire Killer (who is also a Frankenstein): KEITH! Join us as we scream, and then after an appropriate amount of downtime, scream again.
