Episode 60 Type 1 Diabetes with Antoine he's keeping it real

Episode 60 Type 1 Diabetes with Antoine he's keeping it real

Type 1 diabetes (T1D), is a form of diabetes in which very little or no insulin is produced by pancreas.. Insulin is a hormone required for the body to use blood sugar. With no treatment the blood sugar in your body will remain high. The common symptoms are frequent urination, increased thirst, increased hunger, and weight loss. Some people may experience additional symptoms such as blurry vision, tiredness, and poor wound healing.  Symptoms may develop in just a few weeks.

The cause of type 1 diabetes is unknown.  It is believed to involve  genetic and environmental factors.

Risk factors include having a family member with type 1 diabetes. The mechanism of origination involves autoimmune destruction of the insulin producing beta cells  that produce insulin in the pancreas.

Diabetes is diagnosed by testing the level of sugar or glycated hemoglobin (HbA1C) in the blood.

Type 1 diabetes can be determined  from type 2 by testing for the presence of autoantibodies.

Episode 59 Crohn's disease

Episode 59 Crohn's disease

Crohn’s Disease is an inflammatory bowel disease
  • Can affect any part of the GI tract from the mouth to the anus, but most commonly affects the end of the small bowel (ileum) and the beginning of the colon
  • Can affect the entire thickness of the bowel wall
  • Inflammation of the intestine can “skip,” or leave normal areas in between patches of diseased intestine

  • IBD affects an estimated 3 million Americans. Men and women are equally likely to be affected by Crohn's disease.
  • The disease can occur at any age, but Crohn’s disease is most often diagnosed in adolescents and adults between the ages of 20 and 30.
  • Studies have shown that between 1.5 percent and 28 percent of people with IBD have a first-degree relative, such as a parent, child, or sibling, who also has one of the diseases.
  • Even though there is genetic component associated with increased risk of IBD, it is impossible to predict who may get Crohn’s disease based on family history.
  • Crohn’s disease can affect people from all ethnic backgrounds. The disease is more common in Caucasians, though the rates of Crohn’s disease have increased among Hispanics and Asians in recent years.

Episode 15 Stroke—is the 5th leading cause of death in the United States. (CDC)

Episode 15 Stroke—is the 5th leading cause of death in the United States. (CDC)

My guest this week is Dr. Chinedum Clark, board-certified Emergency room physician since 2012. She's also a wife and mother of two children, ages three years old and 11 months. In this episode, we talk about strokes and a bonus conversation about balancing, family, and work-life balance.
Here are some steps you can take that may help you prevent stroke:

Monitor your blood pressure.
Control your cholesterol.
Keep your blood sugar down.
Get active.
Eat better.
Lose weight if you need to.
Don’t smoke, period.
Take medications, such as aspirin, as prescribed.

Aspirin is not appropriate for everyone, so be sure to talk to your doctor before you begin an aspirin regimen. (www.stroke.org)https://www.cdc.gov/stroke/
