**Jennifer Summerfeldt: Any birthing experience can result in physical and psychological trauma if it's not integrated with the sacred act of what it is.
Jennifer Summerfeldt runs a Therapy Practice called Therapy for Moms in Canada, with a team of Therapists specializing in perinatal mental health in particular, zeroing in on “birth trauma”. Jennifer is passionate about working with moms who've experienced traumatic, highly challenging, or disappointing births.
When Jennifer was pregnant with her first child 23 years ago, she was an athlete in grad school for sports psychology. She had an excellent grasp on preparing for a big day, with a checklist, working her mind to get it ready for peak performance. Setting everything up based on the limited amount of info she had. Like many parents and partners, she knew nothing about the culture of birth, medicalized childbirth, or home birth.

**Hermine Hayes: Birthing autonomy is the struggle of midwives for legal recognition and patient rights.
Hermine discusses the tragic incident where the baby died during the home birth and the aftermath that the family and their midwife faced. Hermine argues that home births are treated as a normal healthcare choice in many countries, but in the United States, doctors have the power to make that choice questionable. In this case, the baby did not survive and the doctors called the police on the parents upon arrival at the hospital. The family and their midwife were interrogated and had their homes raided, causing them to go through a traumatic experience. Hermine highlights the double standard between the treatment of home birth midwives versus obstetricians and calls for more integration of home births into the healthcare system.

118b - The Born Free Method is coming! w/ Sara Rosser, CPM
Sara Rosser, CPM, farm midwife, dear friend, incredible mother and wife...and badass birthkeeper is on the show! We are going to give you all the details on our upcoming Born Free Method course!
We have both always been dissatisfied with the conventional maternity model but ALSO the available childbirth education courses...so we decided to build our own.
We started with risks, benefits, alternatives to every intervention under the sun (including vaccines, ultrasound, vitamin K, TOLAC...everything), then we felt compelled to include radical responsibility, bioethics, and informed consent, then we felt the course needed a history of midwifery and women healers...and that still wasn't enough. We added lifestyle medicine and health optimization, detoxification, a whole unit for dads, a whole unit on cannabis, psychedelics, and other drug use. We then added in all of the typical attributes of childbirth education, such as coping, breathing, connecting to the baby...sprinkled in some exercises, meditations, and a bunch of other incredible resources, and BAM! The Born Free Method emerged!
The course is self-guided, and it'll take you 8 weeks to complete. Purchase includes 12 months of weekly calls with me and Sara so that you feel completely supported in your pregnancy and postpartum transition.
The waitlist closes in a week or so, so go jump on and book a call with us if you're interested: www.bornfreemethod.com .
This is the lowest cost that you'll ever be able to buy the course, and you get lifetime access. It's for pregnant people, their spouses, and birthworkers...let's fucking go!
#118 - Kyle Kingsbury: Exploring parenthood with a retired UFC fighter, from natural birth to unconventional parenting
117b - Drew Canole (founder of Organifi): Whole Foods + Water = Better Health
Drew Canole is the founder of Organifi, one of my favorite whole food supplement companies. Drew isn't a health nut...he's an awesome guy!
I had the privilege of visiting Drew and his partner, Bayley, during a recent trip to California where they took me on a tour of their micro-farm (complete with peafowls and all!), and Drew and I sat down to record some magic for your earholes.
In this episode, you'll learn all about the attention and diligence required to create the only whole food supplement line that you'll ever need, whether you are on your fertility journey, pregnant, postpartum, or simply trying to dial in your health despite your busy lifestyle.
As a listener of the podcast, THIS LINK will save you 20% on any Organifi product. I recommend their Cacao Harmony, Green Juice, Red Juice, Gold Latte, and Balance blends!
#117 - Keli Garza: Exploring the Ancient Practice of Vaginal Steaming for Modern Women's Health.
The practice of vaginal steaming, also known as pelvic steaming, yoni steaming, or herbal steam, has been around for centuries and is gaining popularity again. Keli Garza is an expert on vaginal steaming, its practice's history, and its benefits. The practice involves sitting over steaming water infused with herbs, which is believed to improve circulation and provide various health benefits. While there are no scientific studies to support the claims, the practice has been used as an alternative form of self-care and midwifery care. Its popularity has surged in recent years, with celebrities like Gwyneth Paltrow promoting it.
Vaginal steaming is the least invasive and lowest-risk intervention compared to other medical procedures. The historical accounts of gynecological remedies, such as Tra, a book written by the first female physician in Europe, involved vaginal steaming. Women's contributions to medicine have often been overlooked throughout history, as highlighted by Keli Garza. It was not until the late 19th century that a law had to be passed to include women in medical studies. Women who did attend medical school were often ridiculed and discouraged from pursuing surgical specialties. The Crimean War helped create an environment where women had a place in medicine, but only as nurses who took orders from doctors.

#116e - [FOR THE DADS] Mike Gonzalez: Running a Business and Being a Dad Without Losing Yourself
The transformation that comes with fatherhood can be a rite of passage into manhood...but there aren't a lot of great role models out there for men who want to be present and involved in the birth process. Unconscious men breed unconscious births and unconscious children. In my holistic, unconventional OBGYN practice, Beloved Holistics, PCA, I spend as much time with my pregnant clients as I do their partners to prepare them for this beautiful - though often scary - transition. In this podcast series, I want to bring the voices of strong, compassionate men into the room.
Mike Gonzalez has quickly and quietly become a mentor and anchor point for me. He is the owner of Freedom Builderz, and he has been helping me to create my new course, the Born Free Method. Mike is also the father of 3 and always seems to be un-phased by the realities of entrepreneurship. In this interview, Mike shares insights in remaining centered as a parent and partner all while maintaining a rockstar level company. This interview was a necessary contribution to both my Born Free Method course along with any responsible guidebook to owning your masculinity while raising children through the rollercoaster of their development.

#116c - [FOR THE DADS] Jacob Egbert: Leaving the Church, Finding Manhood
Jacob Egbert, DO, is a physician practicing physical medicine and rehab in Salt Lake City, UT. He has six children from his first marriage and a 3-year old from her current wife. He has been a father for nearly two decades, and every child has been a different journey. He is currently working to support other men to maintain their vitality through lifestyle and hormone replacement. Jacob is raising both men and women, and his perspectives on his different roles in raising both genders are so needed in the world of parenting today. Jacob is a dear friend, and an interview with the man is a necessary part of both my Born Free Method course along with any responsible guidebook to owning your masculinity while raising children through the rollercoaster of their development. #116b - [FOR THE DADS] Jason Leister: Raise Stellar Kids & You'll Change the World
The transformation that comes with fatherhood can be a rite of passage into manhood...but there aren't a lot of great role models out there for men who want to be present and involved in the birth process.
Jason Leister is a diamond, multi-faceted and beautiful in every direction. He has 10 children, is married to the incredible Maryn Green, and he has a variety of businesses that help people (like me!) build impactful, successful businesses that align with their core values. In a nutshell: Jason is a wizard. And somehow...he still seems to make parenting look easy. How is this possible? How do you get your kids to respect one another, the planet, and their community? For Jason, the journey hasn't been easy, but he is principled, and those principles are a gift to any man (or woman) who is excited by the prospect of "having it all". This interview was a necessary contribution to both my Born Free Method course along with any responsible guidebook to owning your masculinity while raising children through the rollercoaster of their development. Find Jason's company Freedom Works here. Whether you are a birth worker, a doctor, a healer, an entrepreneur of any type, or just the regular, average Joe, you will benefit from his services.

#116 - Dr. Lindsey M. Cantu: The Queen of Exercise in Pregnancy/Postpartum
Exercise is like a silver bullet for various things that go wrong around birth. It's been clinically demonstrated to reduce the risk of complications in pregnancy, speed up postpartum recovery, and decrease the likelihood of postpartum depression. Yet, as a culture, we only see exercise as a way of losing weight and getting abs. Dr. Lindsey M. Cantu, founder of BIRTHFIT™ joins us to talk about exercise myths during pregnancy, the crucial role that fitness plays in your birth and recovery, whether you can be too fit for birth, the BIRTHFIT approach to preconception, pregnancy, and postpartum training, how you can get started even if you’re new to fitness, and more. #115b - PRP Fertility Program: Sarah Charmoli
In the final part of this series of eight "tweener" episodes about my PRP fertility program, you'll hear from Sarah Charmoli, the face of Effiji Breath, and a friend who guided my wife and I through our second (home) birth through her powerful breathwork practice. A focus on the breath brings spirit into the body, serving as the glue for all of our energetic bodies, oxygenating and ventilating the blood, and circulating cerebrospinal fluid. Breath is life.
12% of couples in the U.S. report fertility challenges, and many of them just get shuttled off to IVF, which costs $12-15k, on average and out-of-pocket. Is there anything more that could have been done that perhaps the conventional OBGYN may have neglected? I would argue that there's quite a bit that can be done to improve fertility, on the physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual levels.
The PRP Fertility Program from Beloved Holistics is my solution to the ever-growing issue of fertility worldwide. For a fraction of the cost of IVF, we will dial in all facets of your health over 75 days to increase your chances of conceiving naturally or, in the very least, to increase the likelihood that your IVF investment will yield the pregnancy and birth of your dreams! This includes functional nutrition, Biogeometry, breath work, fertility awareness tracking, conscious conception, detoxification, and lifestyle fine-tuning.

#115 - Georganne Chapin: This Penis Business: Circumcision in the U.S.
“If the foreskin is so insignificant, why the obsession with cutting it off?” - Georganne Chapin
There’s no argument that cutting a healthy normal body part off a child is okay. Yet, that’s exactly what we’re doing to countless newborn boys every single day. The burden of evidence lies with those who wish to deviate from nature.
Today I’m joined by Georganne Chapin, founder of Intact America, to talk about the lack of evidence on the benefits of circumcision, the vital role of the foreskin, how circumcisions have been allowed to proceed despite breaking multiple bioethics principles, the impact of infant circumcision on adult men, and more. #114b - PRP Fertility Program: Sara Gustafson, PhD
In the seventh part of this series of eight "tweener" episodes about my PRP fertility program, you'll hear from Sara Gustafson, PhD, CHEK practitioner, and metaphysical counselor. Sara operates Primal Fusion with her partner Aleks Rybchinskiy, who has also been a guest on the podcast. Between Sara and Aleks, they possess a deeper toolkit than any couple that I've ever met for achieving optimal wellness through body, soul, and spirit. Sara blends science and spirituality in her work with individuals, couples and groups seeking to embrace the unseen, repressed aspects of Self as a pathway to connection, healing and awakening.

#114 - Stu Fischbein, MD: On VBAC, Twins, and Breech
As an OBGYN in an allopathic medical model, you’re doing incredible sacred work but constrained by rules, regulations, policies, and procedures that prevent us from prioritizing the people most matter.
Practicing home birth doctor, Stu Fischbein, MD joins me to talk about what informed consent should look like, the ridiculous number of C-sections being performed in the United States, how the midwifery model of care has been vilified, the increasing focus on fear around birth, and how practitioners can upskill so they can better support their clients. #113 - Tracey Vogel, MD: The Thousand Faces of Birth Trauma
Dr. Tracey Vogel is a practicing obstetric anesthesiologist in Western Pennsylvania known for her compassionate care. I was lucky enough to rotate with Tracey as a medical student, and I learned so much from her, both from a medical perspective and about how we can go beyond that to really help birthing people feel comfortable and safe in their most vulnerable moments.
In this conversation, we discuss birth trauma not just from the perspective of obstetric violence or non-consensual practices but also from the experiences of women who feel unseen or unheard during childbirth. Join us for a thought-provoking conversation on birth trauma and trauma-informed care. I think you're going to love this conversation.

#112 - Erika Harper: On Strength, Flexibility, and Badass-ness in Pregnancy
Despite what social media and even some medical professionals will say, pregnancy doesn’t mean an automatic loss of strength and physical fitness. Today’s guest, Erika Harper, is proof of that.
Erika is a lifelong athlete who has maintained her strength and fitness through two major surgeries to remove uterine fibroids and two pregnancies and C-sections. In this conversation, Erika and I talk about her birth stories, what it takes to retain your autonomy throughout pregnancy, the difference between movement for fitness and aesthetics, how meditative work helped her through her pregnancies, rekindling intimacy in the postpartum period, and more. As a yogi, speaker, mental health counselor, and sex therapist, Erika brings a unique perspective to the pregnancy and postpartum conversation, and I know you’ll enjoy this episode.

#111 - Hamilton Souther: On the Use of Plant Medicines in Releasing Birth Trauma
It’s a fallacy to think of ourselves as separate from nature. Becoming a parent creates a massive shift in consciousness, and integrating that transformation is essential to embracing it, learning from it, and fully embodying it. One of the ways we can facilitate this integration is through plant medicine.
Maestro Medico Vegetalista Hamilton Souther shares his exceptionally insightful perspective on plant medicine and our connection with nature. In this conversation, we talk about the stark difference between traditional plant medicine training and Western psychedelic culture, connecting with your baby's spirit, releasing birth trauma and generational trauma, the deep and personal work facilitated when you truly connect with nature, and more.

#110b - Mark England: With My Words I Create
Many of my friends and allies in the wellness space recommended that I connect with Mark England. One day, we jumped on a call and the rest was magic. Before I knew it, Mark and I were hiking through the woods of Louisville, KY. I made the invitation. Mark accepted. And here we are: "ABRACADABRA".
Mark England is the founder of Enlifted. Enlifted is a specialty certification on the power of words and stories and how to dismantle the dreaded Victim Mentality. Enlifted Level 1 certification is ideal for anyone who is already coaching or wants to start that wants to have the skills and the confidence to make it as a coach. The Get Enlifted Podcast is for coaches and anyone who wants to build their skills with your language.
Mark's core language program Procabulary is the most common-sensical, simple, yet effective strategy for examining our language and changing it in even subtle ways to optimize the way that we show up in life, our relationships, and our businesses.

#110 - Kimberly Ann Johnson: On Grieving the Loss of Sanctity in Birth
When we talk about birth as a sacred experience, it’s not about feeling no pain and golden light with classical music playing. It will be bloody and probably messy, but there’s a deep, transformative power when we embrace the rites of passage we’re meant to go through as humans.
Those unmedicated, oxytocin-filled, physiological births are becoming a rarity, but they’re sacred. It means intact relationships, more empathy in the culture, and more people who have a sense of harmony with their environment. If we want to see a change in the world, we must consider how we bring babies into it.
Today I’m joined by Kimberly Ann Johnson, a Sexological Bodyworker, Somatic Experiencing trauma resolution practitioner, yoga teacher, birth doula, and single mom. Kimberly is doing some unique work, and we’ve bonded over the role of hospital interventions in natural childbirth. She doesn’t shy away from the complex, controversial conversations, and she joins us to explore how we can start to repair the harm we’ve done as a society regarding birth.

#109b - PRP Fertility Program: Emily Greene, Psychic Medium
In the third of this series of eight "tweener" episodes about my PRP fertility program, you'll hear from Emily Greene, a psychic medium who discovered that she has the unique gift of being able to connect to the spirits of babies who are waiting to enter their mother's womb. Every client that I have sent to Emily has been BLOWN AWAY, so, naturally, she was a necessary addition to my 60-day PRP Program.
For a fraction of the cost of IVF, we will dial in all facets of your health over 60 days to increases your chances of conceiving naturally or, in the very least, to increase the likelihood that your IVF investment will yield the pregnancy and birth of your dreams! This includes functional nutrition, breath work, fertility awareness tracking, conscious conception, detoxification, and lifestyle fine-tuning

#109 - Mansal Denton: On Embracing Masculinity and Sacred Hunting
A sacred hunt is a spiritual practice. On the hunt, there's an incredible attunement to the oscillation between masculine and feminine, that occurs in nearly every moment of our lives. It’s as much about connecting with the land, and the animal you're hoping to kill, as it is about holding a rifle and learning how to shoot.
Kyle Kingsbury introduced me to the experience, and together with a group of my guy friends, we went on a three-day hunt led by today’s guest, Mansal Denton, and his two guides. Mansal makes the trip special, starting by writing a love letter to the animal you’re going to kill. Many ceremonial elements are threaded throughout, and we came away with an incredible experience.

#108 - Brendon Marotta: On Circumcision: A Cure Looking for a Disease
In my days as a resident doing hundreds of circumcisions, I didn’t give much thought to the implications. We were taught the benefits of the procedure and counseled patients the same. But outside of religious rites, the United States is the only nation that circumcises infants in this standardized way.
So, why do we continue to cut the genitals of our newborn baby males when the rest of the world does not?
This is the question filmmaker and author Brendon Marotta set out to answer in his latest film, American Circumcision. The film explores both sides of the circumcision debate, and it’s won multiple awards. It's a very polarising topic, but Brendon takes an unbiased approach, featuring numerous experts for and against.

#107b - PRP Fertility Program: Nathan Riley, MD, FACOG
In this series of "tweener" episodes, you'll be hearing from the 8 PRP practitioners to better understand how a truly holistic approach to fertility may be the answer that you and your partner have been seeking...
The first practitioner is yours truly, Nathan Riley, MD, FACOG. I'm an allopathic physician and OBGYN, but I bring in a variety of other healing modalities into my care for women and their partners to help couples achieve natural pregnancy and childbirth in line with nature's lessons...rather than against them.

#107 - [FOR THE DADS] Greg Schmaus: On Archetypes, the Psyche, and Mapping Your Power
FOR THE DADS is a series of podcasts that will provide helpful insights to current or soon-to-be fathers!
Archetypes are the vehicles we use to express ourselves. Chronic stress and cultural influences can make exploring the dark and uncomfortable parts of ourselves challenging, leaving us stuck in behaviors that aren’t serving us. Archetypal work gives us a tool to explore these aspects as less of a personal flaw and more of a collective pattern that we can shift.
For holistic health practitioner and shamanic energy healer Greg Schmaus, this type of work has been very reflective of his healing journey. The work he’s doing is profoundly impactful, and the way he shares about archetypal work in today’s interview is incredibly insightful. You're going to love this episode.

#106 - Brooke Schmoe: A Midwife, a School Bus, and Birth Justice
Pregnancy is an entire transformation; there’s far more to it than urine dipsticks, fundal heights, and Dopp tones. If we keep doing things within the strict, sterile, traditional boundaries of patient and doctor, we’ll never move closer to an optimal style of maternity care. It’s not a disease process, and a different type of care is required.
Brooke Schmoe is the founder and midwife of probably the most unusual midwifery practice you’ve ever heard of: The Midwife Bus. Working in a birth center, Brooke realized that she was drawn to providing care to the underdogs and people who didn't have a lot of love. Remembering a guest lecture back in midwifery school, she reached out to a midwife who had a mobile clinic, and from there, The Midwife Bus was born.
I'm very excited to bring this episode to you, and I hope it inspires you to be a part of the positive change in your community.

#105 - Ayla Barmmer: The Best Damn Prenatal & Virility Vitamins on the Market
Everything we do - both women and men - in the preconception period impacts the pregnancy experience and outcome.
As a registered dietitian, today’s guest Ayla Barmmer saw the need for a new type of prenatal that provided the right amounts of nutrients in bioavailable form. She recognized that nothing on the market fit the bill, so she created FullWell Fertility, a fertility wellness product and education brand.
FullWell has become - by far - my favorite prenatal vitamin on the market. On top of a healthy lifestyle, it's your insurance policy to ensure that you, your baby, and your partner are as healthy as can be from conception through postpartum.

#104 - JW Ross: On an Elixir that Supports Focus, Calm, and Sex
Throughout history, cultures around the world have used different solutions for social lubrication. And while many of us have been socialized to think that alcohol is the best way to relieve social awkwardness and have a good time, it comes with many negative unintended consequences.
So, what’s the alternative? That’s a question that Botanic Tonics founder, and today’s guest, JW Ross, set out to answer. After struggling with alcohol addiction, JW wanted to find a solution for his social awkwardness that wouldn’t have detrimental effects on his body. He deeply researched the plants used by different societies worldwide, and that’s when he learned about kava.
Where alcohol amplifies you, kava calms you down. Since trying JW’s Feel Free Wellness Tonic, it’s become a crucial part of my daily self-care and something I recommend to many clients. It’s one of the few products I’ve found that sustain me, help me rebalance my nervous system, and show up in the world in alignment and integrity.

#103 - Adam Blanning, MD: On Anthroposophical Medicine, Embracing Fever, and the Future of Integrative Medicine
Like many people in the hospital system, I couldn’t shake the feeling that there must be more I could be doing to help. But what if we could improve that system? Not replace it but integrate it into a more whole-person approach.
Anthroposophic medicine is a patient-focused integrative medical system, and it can be very validating for those who feel like something's been missing. Here to explore its history and application is Dr. Adam Blanning. I encourage you to approach this conversation with an open heart. Adam has incredible insights into how we can reimagine the human experience and heal the person through the lens of the fourfold human being.

#102 - Tessa Bowman: On Non-Toxic Living Throughout Pregnancy and Parenthood
In recent decades, we’ve seen rapidly increasing rates of infertility, declining sperm counts, and growing health issues. As a collective, we must take a step back and consider all the environmental toxins we’re exposing ourselves to. From personal care products like lotions and floss to lawn care compounds and laundry detergent, we’re living in a beautiful time where there’s a healthy, non-toxic option for almost anything.
Unfortunately, many people are still unaware of the huge toxic load the average household is exposed to and the harmful effects of continuing like this. Today I’m joined by holistic nutritionist and healthy living expert Tessa Bowman to talk about how we can make sense of overly confusing labels and shift to a low-toxic lifestyle.

#101 - Kate Morton: On Seed Cycling and Hacking Your Hormones
As a dietitian, Kate Morton strongly believes in a food-first approach. That's why she created Funk It, a women's health company that makes all-natural food-based products for the menstrual cycle, including seed blends.
At its core, seed cycling is a straightforward practice that involves taking pumpkin and flax seeds daily during the follicular phase of your cycle and sunflower and sesame seeds during your luteal phase. I’ve seen so many women benefit from seed cycling, experiencing a resolution of their menstrual issues, from fertility challenges to thyroid and adrenal problems and more. Something packed into these incredibly nutrient and energy-rich seeds does wonders for women's menstrual cycles.

#100 - Michel Odent: On Supporting Birth: We are Asking the Wrong Questions
Our cultural conditioning tells us that women aren’t capable of giving birth independently and that we should apply every possible intervention to reduce the difficulties associated with childbirth. For Michel Odent, that’s a neutralization of the laws of natural selection.
Early in his career, Michel worked as the only doctor in a maternity unit with six midwives. He took a deep interest in their experiences and asked them questions that changed his thoughts on birth work. As a general surgeon, he credits a lot to his interdisciplinary perspective. He believes that’s what allows him to make connections that other overly-specialized people do not.
Michel is a legend in the maternity care space and has been a hero of mine for many years. This interview was such an honor, and I am very grateful to host this conversation for you on the podcast. You're going to love this one.

#99 - Keshia Lockett: On Supporting Black Women Through Pregnancy
The maternal mortality rate for black women in the US is almost three times that of white women. Around the country, black women seeking maternal care are disregarded at a time when they’re most vulnerable.
Today, I’m joined by Birth Doula and educator Keshia Lockett of Empowered Black Doula, who is on a mission to empower pregnant people. Through her work, Keshia is a much-needed facilitator between clients and their providers, and she offers emotional, physical, and informational support to pregnant people, mainly in the black community
I’m inspired by the way Keshia shows up in the world and grateful to her for sharing her experiences with us. She shared so many insights; I know you’ll get a lot of value when you listen.

#98 - Natasha Kingsbury: The Hidden Life of an Anorexic-Bulimic
For almost nine years, Natasha Kingsbury battled with bulimia. For years before that, she fought anorexia. The whole time, nobody knew. Her story highlights the fact that no one look signals an eating disorder. It could be the ultra-thin model, the ripped athlete, the guy always showing off his abs or the sexy Playboy Club host.
Disordered eating and body dysmorphia are something I’m seeing come up more and more in my practice and among friends and family. It’s much more common than we think, and it shows up in unexpected ways.
I am so delighted that I have a person in my life who's willing to come on and talk about this issue which is often kept under wraps. Tash's story is so illuminating, and she shared so many insights not only for people who may be struggling with disordered eating but also for those who think it might be affecting someone they love.

#97 - Amaya Shiva: On Re-Harmonizing with Your Environment Through Ayurveda
Ayurveda is about the nature of the universe and how that applies to human life and living. It originated in India more than 5,000 years ago and centers around prevention and the maintenance of health rather than the treatment of disease. Ayurveda helps practitioners create balance in their bodies to find optimal health and vitality based on their unique constitution.
I’m joined by Amaya Shiva, an Ayurvedic practitioner dedicating her life to helping others find their balance. We spoke about the core principles of Ayurveda, the characteristics of the three doshas and how they can help to inform your choices, and recommendations to learn more about Ayurveda.

#96 - Stephanie Riley: On Vasectomies and Healing After Pregnancy Loss
“If you’re going to make it in this world as a couple, hard conversations are important.”
Every single person I bring to this podcast is someone who I know will be open to having the heartfelt conversations that need to happen about how we care for ourselves and one another.
What makes today different is that I’ve let go of my role as interviewer, and I’m sitting side by side with my wife, Stephanie Riley, to talk about vasectomies and healing after pregnancy loss.
In this candid and necessary dialogue, we opened up about what was a difficult time for both of us and explored how our perceptions have shifted over time as we’ve integrated the experience.
This discussion wasn’t easy, and it’s a true reflection of the flexibility that you need to have a lasting, healthy partnership. You’re not entitled to have a joyful relationship that lasts a lifetime. It takes real work. You have to be willing to be humbled and to compromise and to learn to flow together.
I hope that this conversation provides insight into how much empathy is needed on both sides when it comes to talking about contraception and whether you want to grow your family further.

#94 - Whapio Bartlett: On Wisdom Keeping, with a Truly Legendary Midwife
With strict and sometimes oppressive licensing and regulatory requirements, the average midwife has to prioritize maintaining their license over the experience of the birthing person.
Today I am so grateful to introduce you to Whapio Bartlett. Whapio has been an Independent Midwife for over 30 years, attending women and families in birth and educating women in the Arts of Midwifery and Healing. She also teaches Homeopathy and is affiliated with HANA (Hahnemann Academy of North America). She speaks and frequently writes about Quantum Midwifery and Returning Birth to the Family.
In our conversation, we explore what it means to be a wisdom keeper, her wise woman midwifery care model, and how you can become a birthkeeper who meets the educational standards while maintaining the integrity of what it means to be a person attending to birth. You’re going to love this episode.

#93 - Amy Fournier: On Embracing Your Inner Aphrodite
The human experience is marked at intervals by significant rites of passage. These transitions are just as important as the moments of birth and death - they’re everything that happens in between.
Holistic health and fitness expert Amy Fournier is doing remarkable things in the holistic coaching space and through her podcast Awakening Aphrodite. Amy’s journey started like many of us, disconnected from our senses, pushing forward without really living life. After burning out and transforming her life, she now helps others harmonize their masculine and feminine energies and connect to their intuition, soul, and nature.
As she's starting to transform into the Wise Woman, I wanted to bring her onto the show to share some of her insights, and she delivers in the way that only she can. This deep conversation covered topics from fitness to religion, witchcraft, ageism, and more. I know you’ll love this conversation with Amy Fournier.

#92 - Jade Bryce: On Birth Trauma, Womb Wounds, and Perky Boobs
Women’s sexuality is the source of their power and their magic, yet there’s still so much shame wrapped up with it.
Throughout history, the church and the state have held on to a deep fear of women’s power. Even today, society continues to condition women to scorn their sexuality and repress it. Love, sex, and relationship coach Jade Bryce is on a mission to help people to break this conditioning, feel safe to experience pleasure, and feel worthy and deserving of pleasure.
In this interview, we talk about the deep wounds left by a fear-based, religious upbringing, Jade’s realization that we are the source of our pleasure, how she reached over 70 orgasms in one week without a partner and at least half without touch, tools to connect the divine and the physical, and how to heal from birth trauma.

#91 - Lindsey Meehleis: Birth and Death are Two Sides to the Same Coin
We live in a time where having a home birth is a privilege, and the only way to do it with a home birth midwife is to be in peak health.
Lindsey Meehleis is a home birth midwife who is passionate about helping her clients exercise their autonomy. She wants women to know that the best way to give birth wherever you want is to take care of yourself through your diet and lifestyle and that there are simple, affordable ways to do so.
As birth workers, we need the language and insight into how to hold space for a pregnant woman or her partner who goes through one of these tragic, albeit rare, events. Lindsey has an insightful perspective on the divine experiences surrounding birth and death, and I love that she's willing to get deep into this. I’m sure you’ll learn so much from this episode.

#90 - Sandra Alvarez: On the Secret War Among Hospitals That’s Driving Up Healthcare Costs
There’s a giant game of monopoly being played by healthcare providers in our country, and neither you nor I stand to benefit.
Sandra Alvarez’s latest film, InHospitable, shines a light on two specific players in the game in my hometown of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania - a place that's very near and dear to me.
Tensions rose when the dominant healthcare provider UPMC created its own insurance company. Patients previously receiving care with UPMC providers and at their hospitals were pushed out unless they switched to UPMC’s insurance. In response, Highmark, the dominant insurer, started its medical provider, Allegheny Health Network.
The two continue to battle it out for market share.
This type of infighting amongst organizations claiming to provide care to the community makes you wonder whose interests they really care about and InHospitable does a great job of clarifying some of these very confronting issues.

#89 - Jessica Pin: "I Consented to Labiaplasty, and Things Went Wrong”
As a young lady, Jessica Pin started googling around the internet about the clitoris, as a young lady does. During her search, labiaplasty ads began appearing advertising the “optimal” vulvar appearance, which made her concerned that perhaps she was unlike other girls. She sought out a surgeon, who was a renowned OBGYN in TX, and he agreed to perform her surgery. The surgeon amputated her labia minora, which was not what she had asked of him. The surgeon also took the liberty to remove some of her clitoral hood, unknowingly leaving her without clitoral innervation.
If this story is confronting, it should be. Why are women seeking labiaplasty? Who decides what the “ideal vulva” looks like? Should a surgeon operate in an area without understanding the region’s innervation? What happened to informed consent? All of this and more in this very wide-ranging conversation.

#87 - Rachel Varitimos: On Women Supporting Women to Eat Intuitively
I met Rachel through her partner, Ryan Sprague. She's into all things biohacking and is also linked in with the Chek Institute. She is a coach to many women, and her specialty is intuitive eating, meaning not eating what you are "told is good" but letting your soul guide you to what your body and mind are craving. This is a simple yet powerful practice that she adopted after developing dysfunctional eating from attending weight loss camps as a child. In this conversation, we talk about dieting, manifestation, and pursuing your "1 Love" above all. Heck...maybe you'll even be convinced to attend one of her women-only intuitive eating retreats!
