Financial Friday #15 - Restraints Upon Importation

Financial Friday #15 - Restraints Upon Importation

"Each nation has been made to look with an invidious eye upon the prosperity of all the nations with which it trades, and to consider their gain as its own loss. Commerce, which ought naturally to be, among nations, as among individuals, a bond of union and friendship, has become the most fertile source of discord and animosity."

### This Episode ###

Chapter 1: Of the Principle of the Commercial System

A look at what European economists thought made a country wealthy and how it influence regulations.

Chapter 2: Restraints on Importation of Goods which Can Be Produced at Home

Countries restrict goods by either high duties (taxes) or absolute bands which more or less creates a monopoly for the home market. These monopolies encourage more investment of time and money into that market. But does this help the society?

Chapter 3: Restraints on Importation of Goods for the Balance of Trade

The last chapter had regulations based on greed. In this chapter, it is national prejudice and animosity.

Financial Friday #14 - Of The Different Progress of Opulence In Different Nations

"Had human institutions, therefore, never disturbed the natural course of things, the progressive wealth and increase of the towns would, in every political society, be consequential, and in proportion to the improvement and cultivation of the territory or country."

### This Episode ###

Chapter 1: Of the Natural Progress of Opulence

How countries naturally grow into wealth.

Chapter 2: Of the Discouragement of Agriculture in the Ancient State of Europe after the Fall of the Roman Empire

"Laws frequently continue in force long after the circumstances, which first gave occasion to them, and which could alone render them reasonable no more."

Chapter 3: Of the Rise and Progress of Cities and Towns after the Fall of the Roman Empire

Order and good government with liberty and security of individuals was established in cities

Chapter 4: How the Commerce of the Towns Contributed to the Improvement of the Country

“Having sold their birthright, in the want of plenty, for trinkets and baubles, fitter to be the pay-things of children than the serious pursuits of men, they became as insignificant as any substantial anyone in a city”

Financial Friday #13 - Of the Nature, Accumulation, and Employment of Stock

### This Episode ###

Chapter 1: Of the Division of Stock

Chapter 2: Expense of maintaining Money

Money is an instrument of commerce. Therefore, if you reduce the cost of currency you increase the country's revenue.

Financial Friday #12 - Of Rent of Land

"The proposal of any new law or regulation of commerce which comes from [employers], ought always to be listened to with great precaution."

### This Episode ###

Land is a naturally monopoly price. This causes rent to behave completely differently than profits or wages.

Some produce always affords a rent but others it depends.

The first 11 chapters of this book are summarized at the end of this episode by saying wages and rent go up or down as societies improve or decline but be careful with employers who make their money from profits.

Financial Friday #10 - Inequalities Of Wages and Profit Arising from the Nature of the Employments

"If in the same neighborhood, there was an employment evidently either more or less advantageous than the rest, so many people would crowd into the one case, and so many would desert it in the other, that its advantages would soon return the level of the other employments. This at least would be the case in a society where things were left to follow their natural course, where there was perfect liberty, and where every man was perfectly free both to chuse what occupation he thought proper, and to change it as often as he thought proper."

Financial Friday #9 - Of the Profits of Stock

"A great stock, with small profits, generally increases faster than a small stock with great profits."

### This Episode ###

Like wages, rising and falling profits are correlated with the increasing or declining state of society. However the affect is different.

As a country is increasing, the profits of stock decrease. If a country is in a declining state, the profits increase.

We can use interest of money as a proxy for how profits increase or decrease.

We will talk about a few exceptions and about whether high wages or high profits have a larger affect on price of goods.

Financial Friday #8 - Of the Wages of Labour

Financial Friday #8 - Of the Wages of Labour

"The money price of labour is necessarily regulated by two circumstances; the demand for labour, and the price of the necessaries and conveniences of life."

### This Episode ###

Originally, all of the produce went to pay for labour. However, this state will not last long as soon as either land is privatized or stock accumulated.

The contract between master and laborer are at odds with each other. However, the master has many advantages over a laborer. But, There is a floor to how low masters can ever lower wages.

We then give multiple examples which would allow a laborer to gains some advantages. This is good because higher labour prices are an advantage to society on all levels -- including for the employers.

We then cover how years of plenty and years of scarcity affect labor.

Financial Friday #7 - Of the Natural and Market Price of Commodities

Financial Friday #7 - Of the Natural and Market Price of Commodities

"The price of monopoly is upon every occasion the highest which can be got. ... The natural price, or the price of free competition, on the contrary, is the lowest which can be taken."

### This Episode ###

Every society has an average rate for wages, profits, and rent -- the natural rates. The natural price is the amount a commodity, when sold, would cover the natural rate of wages, profits, and rent.

In contrast, market price is the actual price a commodity is selling for. This price is regulated by the amount of goods being sold and the number of people willing to pay the natural price.

Market price natural gravitates towards the natural price through changes in the competition with each person acting in their own self-interest..

Financial Friday #6 - Of the Components of the Price of Commodities

Financial Friday #6 - Of the Components of the Price of Commodities

"All taxes, and all the revenue which is founded upon them, all salaries, pensions, and annuities of every kind, are ultimately derived from some one or other of those three original sources of revenue, and are paid either immediately or mediately from the wages of labour, the profits of stock, or the rent of land."

### This Episode ###

In early society, the price of a good (how much labour it can exchange for) is entirely what labour it takes to produce.

Once someone accumulates stock, the naturally use it to employ people and supply materials and plan on making a profit from the production.

Once a majority of land is privitized there is a third portion of price of commodity in the rent.

Financial Friday #5 - Of the Real and Nominal Price of Commodities

Financial Friday #5 - Of the Real and Nominal Price of Commodities

"Labour alone, never varying in its own value, is the ultimate and real standard by which the value of all commodities can at all times and places be estimated and compared. It is their real price; money is their nominal price only."

### This Episode ###

Value of a commodity, not being consumed by me, is equal to the quantity of labour it can purchase (or command). The original "purchase" of anything was not with gold or silver but with the toil it took to produce.

Labour is difficult to measure so it is usually no used to estimate value. We usually end up using money to value things.

However, the value of money fluctuates. A quantity which itself Is varying in its value can never be an accurate measure of value.

Financial Friday #4 - Of the Origin and Use of Money

Financial Friday #4 - Of the Origin and Use of Money

"Every man lives by exchanging, or becomes in some measure a merchant, and society itself grows."

### This Episode ###

A very small portion of our labour is put towards goods we consume. We barter or trade for almost everything we need.

In case, you don't have something I need right now, I need to exchange for something easy to trade again. Eventually this other good became metal money.

In this chapter, we cover why money was invented, what it represents, and the challenges of using it.

### Background ###

I had a lot of strong opinions on Economics. I knew what policies were best for governments to build a strong economy.

Then I realized, I did not have a strong base to build these opinions on. I had not spent time reading the foundational thinkers. My opinions did not come from first principles.

The Wealth Of Nations is the first book on my list I am reading. Written by the OG of Economics, Adam Smith.

Spiritual Sunday #4 - Ecclesiastes 4

Spiritual Sunday #4 - Ecclesiastes 4

"Two are better than one, because they have a good return for their labor: If either of them falls down, one can help the other up. But pity anyone who falls and has no one to help them up."

This episode is a Read-A-Long. I focus on Chapter 4 of Ecclesiastes. After a few verses, I will take a break and interject my thoughts. Ecclesiastes helps set proper expectations for life. Solomon is one of the greatest philosophers to have ever lived. In this book, we get to see his principles for life.

In this episode, we learn about oppression, toil, envy, and advancement.

Financial Friday #3 - That the Division of Labour is Limited by the Extent of the Market

Financial Friday #3 - That the Division of Labour is Limited by the Extent of the Market

"There are some some sorts of industry, even of the lowest kind, which can be carried on no where but in a great town."

### This Episode ###

The size of the market is a limiting factor to division of labour. If it takes more expense to travel, the price of goods to weight ratio need to be greater. Early in society, the greatest countries were along waterways because it made trade easier. Easier trade lead to a larger market.

Spiritual Sunday #3 - Ecclesiastes 3

"I know that everything God does will endure forever; nothing can be added to it and nothing taken from it. God does it so that people will fear him."

This episode is a Read-A-Long. I focus on Chapter 3 of Ecclesiastes. After a few verses, I will take a break and interject my thoughts. Ecclesiastes helps set proper expectations for life. Solomon is one of the greatest philosophers to have ever lived. In this book, we get to see his principles for life.

There is a time and season for everything. I need to expect life will have ups and downs along the way.

Financial Friday #2 - Of The Principle Which Gives Occasion To The Division of Labour

Financial Friday #2 - Of The Principle Which Gives Occasion To The Division of Labour

"He will be more likely to prevail if he can interest their self-love in his favor, and show them that it is for their own advantage to do for him what he requires of them."

### This Episode ###

The division of labour occurs from human nature and only exists in humans. The division of labour is a natural; common to all men. There are too many interactions for people to try to gain good will or kindness from each individual for everything they want. Instead they must appeal to the other person's self interest. Even a beggar accumulates most things from trade. Dogs have very different talents for each breed. However, they do not barter so they don't see the advantages as a species.

Spiritual Sunday #2 - Ecclesiastes 2

This episode is a Read-A-Long. I focus on Chapter 2 of Ecclesiastes. After a few verses, I will take a break and interject my thoughts. Ecclesiastes helps set proper expectations for life. Solomon is one of the greatest philosophers to have ever lived. In this book, we get to see his principles for life.

Pleasures are Meaningless! Even given everything your heart desires, nothing is gained.

Wisdom and Folly are Meaningless! Whether wise or foolish, both will die and be forgotten.

Toil is Meaningless! You work hard all your life to build up wealth. However, it is all left to someone who has not toiled for it.

But at the end of this chapter, we get a peek into what is meaningful!

Financial Friday #1 - Of the Division of Labour

Financial Friday #1 - Of the Division of Labour

"The division of labour, ... in every art, [creates] a proportionable increase of the productive powers"

### This Episode ###

The biggest reason the productive powers of the world have increased is the division of labour.

Whether it is due to increase in dexterity, less task-switching, or extra machinery, the increase in economic production is a direct result of the division of labour. This increased production creates a better society for everyone, even the poorest people of the society.

I had a lot of strong opinions on Economics. I knew what policies were best for governments to build a strong economy.

Then I realized, I did not have a strong base to build these opinions on. I had not spent time reading the foundational thinkers. My opinions did not come from first principles.
