EP 39: There's Never a Perfect Time (Part 2)

EP 39: There's Never a Perfect Time (Part 2)

In this week’s episode, Amanda discusses the dangers of Motivation 2.0 (a popular educational pedagogy) and why having a goal that is forever just out of reach is detrimental to one’s mental, emotional, and even physical health. She also discusses why it’s so incredibly important to trust the plans and goals that you have for yourself, even when they do go right.

EP 38: There's Never a Perfect Time

In this week’s episode, Amanda discusses why it’s so important to have a plan when you’re trying to start working for yourself, leave one job in favor of another, start a business, or make any change in one’s professional or personal life. However, she also discusses why it’s equally as important to make sure that your plan has an ending, and that you don’t keep adding conditions to it. There’s no such thing as the “perfect” time to do something, but there’s way to make it almost perfect. She also discusses why it is important to be prepared to start what you want to do (that new job, working for yourself, starting a business), but it’s also important to start faster than you might think and then adjust as you go, and adjust as you grow.

EP 34: Leaving Teaching for a Completely Different Industry & Job (I Was Able to Do It in 3 Months; So Can You)

This is the time of year where teachers are being asked whether or not they plan to renew their contracts for the next school year, and this always comes at a tumultuous time with spring fever, proms, graduations, and standardized tests bombarding both teachers and students. This year, it's even more tumultuous as more and more teachers are leaving the profession, and leaving at record rates. This week, I am re-publishing my very first episode that talks about why and how I left teaching. Even if you are not a teacher, this episode has tangible takeaways and step-by-step information that you can follow if you are looking to make a change professionally and even personally.

EP 32: Take Up Space (It's Okay If What You Want Changes)

In this week's episode, Amanda discusses how society has evolved to a point where picking a "box" (a job, an interest, etc.) and having that forever works; we're not always meant to be doing what at 50 what we chose at 18, and this is a pattern that millennials (including elder millennials) and Gen Z will be breaking (and it won't always be easy).

EP 30: A. God-Shaped Hole

EP 30: A. God-Shaped Hole

AKA a universe-shaped hole, AKA a void that is present in the human heart. In this week's episode, Amanda discusses the meaning of a "God-Shaped" hole, how hearing this phrase for the first time on a run listening to Mayiam Bialik's podcast Mayiam Bialik's Breakdown provided her with clarity and perspective that she hadn't had in years, and what the implications are if we let this void present in our hearts become all-consuming (especially if we're using work to attempt to fill it). It's incredibly important to acknowledge and use coping skills as coping skills rather than thinking that they are the end-all, be-all that will solve out issues, and Amanda hopes that this episode can help others do just that.

EP 25: High High's and Low Low's

In this week's episode, Amanda gives you some tools and perspective regarding these high and low emotional moments when we're in a place of change in our lives (no matter what that change is). Knowing that this is normal is key to making sure that you make the right decision for you and also that the decision you make isn't rooted just in one emotional moment. You'll have these high high's and low low's no matter what your life path is, so why not make the pivot/that transition you've been thinking about making? It might seem like you'll have less control if you choose to create your own path or do things different than what most people are doing, but you'll actually have more control than you did before.

...Plus the effect that this will have on the education professional for years to come. In this episode, Amanda discusses what teaching during a global pandemic is like, money and teaching, and how external individuals' perspectives regarding teaching as a profession is going to permeate professionals' experiences and future generations entering the profession, and why America was already losing so many amazing teachers and why the pandemic is going to exacerbate this. She shares her experience and reflections plus how these experiences and feelings are not just specific to teaching; so many other professions are seeing these trends and its employees are feeling these feelings as well, and here's what to do if you're one of those people.

EP 19: You Must Give Up The Life You Had To Have the Life That Is Waiting For You

Knowing when to walk away (regardless of if it's professional, personal, emotional, a relationship, a friendship) is incredibly important. There are always going to be reasons why you should stay and why you should wait a little bit longer before making that leap or making that decision, so are you going to let that stop you? In this episode, Amanda provides her listeners with advice regarding walking away and making that change as well as little bit of advice concerning how to know that you're in a good position to do (Episodes 10, 12, and 18 provide more micro, tangible takeaways) by opening up concerning her journey through this process when she was figuring out whether or not to leave teaching and work for herself as a Certified Professional Resume Writer.

In this episode, Amanda discusses why it's so important to have one thing that helps you feel like you and allows you to take at least 30 minutes to decompress (ideally an hour) each day. Regardless of whether or not you're pivoting or going through a transformational time in your life, this is so important to have if we're going to practice living the life that we want to have. Amanda gives examples as to what this could be (but you're probably already thinking about what that is, as well as 3 specific tips and suggestions concerning how to implement this one thing into your life daily (yes, you do have time) regardless of what your situation and schedule looks like.

EP 9: You are the sum of the 5 people that you spend the most time with

... And we would argue that you are the sum of the 4 people that you spend the most time with because #1 on that list is you (whether you like it or not). In this week's episode, Amanda discusses why the cliche phrase that is seen a lot on social media and in social content is so true and so important (with her own twist): you are the sum of the four people besides yourself that you spend the most time with. So what do you do when you want to spend your time more deliberately but feel compelled to have to spend it a certain way? In this episode, you'll receive tangible advice and information about why this is so hard to deal with, how to transform how you spend your time (especially since work/life balances don't exist anymore) and why you're really the sum of the 4 people you spend the most time with, not 5.

I know you're doing the best that you can be, and I'm so proud of you.

It's also normal to feel this way even if you're not in the process of making change! She also talks about how finances and money can contribute to this, and what you can do for 3 minutes each day to help when you're feeling uncertain/overwhelmed.

EP 5: It Was Never Meant to Be

The life that you are living was never a part of the life that you are coming into. It never existed in that space. It was never meant to be.

On this week's episode of The Pivot Podcast, Amanda discusses how important it is to let go of the life that you assumed you would be living to make room for the life that you want to live, even if you're not completely sure of how exactly you'll be accomplishing that. She shares the moment she realized her last year teaching was her last year teaching (only 2 months into the school year) and how after only 3 months she had everything in a row to make that realization a reality (plus what else she did along the way that you can too). If you know that you want to make a change but don't know how or where to start, or you only have a rough idea of either the finish line or a couple of steps that could be placing you at a finish line that you would like, and you're trying to place that finish line in front of you, this episode is exactly what you need.

Understanding that your life is yours to live (within reason) and that you really can do whatever you want in this life (with some realism and some tangible takeaways/actionable steps), this episode will give you a toolbox concerning how to take the "There are no rules" mentality into your everyday life to pivot in micro or macro ways in your person and professional lives with your finances, your work, those around you, and yourself.

EP 3: Your Bandwidth Before Self-Fulfillment: Grief, Time, & A Tribute to Abby Anderson & Gabe Grunewald

EP 3: Your Bandwidth Before Self-Fulfillment: Grief, Time, & A Tribute to Abby Anderson & Gabe Grunewald

Amanda is solo in this week's episode to discuss the impact that the loss of an individual has on how we live our lives and how it provides us with perspective and an astute ability to shift what we do and how we will (both by choice and by force). She also pays tribute to Abigail Anderson and Gabe Grunewald, sisters who passed away within 2 years of each other, and discusses their impact on those that knew them and knew of them (you don't have to be into running for this one). You only have this one and precious life.

EP 2: You're The Only One That Wakes Up in Your Life: Professional Training & Outside Noise

EP 2: You're The Only One That Wakes Up in Your Life: Professional Training & Outside Noise

In episode 2, Amanda and Ashley discuss why we so often define ourselves by our formal and informal training/experience, why we shouldn't let the "what are you using your degree/certifications/education for?" question define what we do daily, how the opinions of others and outside noise are a part of that, and why it is, however, important to be realistic when determining what we do in our day-to-day life. But there are more appropriate, introspective questions that should be taken into consideration.

EP 1: Establishing Street Cred: How I Pivoted from Teaching to Working for Myself

This week is solo!! Welcome to The Pivot Podcast; my story is one of many regarding what to do when you realize that you have everything you dreamed of but the reality is SO different from the build-up and expectation. This podcast is about YOU and to hopefully help you develop a work/life balance and find fulfillment in your life (regardless of whether or not you're looking to make a change), but I wanted to give you a little context and share the backbone of my professional pivot from teaching high school to working for myself so you know that I've been there (and still am there) when it comes to figuring life out and trying to find balance while paying your bills.
