S2, E9: Educate, Reflect, Act: Addressing Anti-Black Racism (with YouthREX)

This week on The Revolutionized Mind, we are joined by two members from the YouthREX team, Rahma Kiongozi and Cyril Cromwell. In this powerful conversation, we dive deep into the realities of anti-Black racism, including what it is, how it continues to shape our world, and why it's essential to remain actively engaged in dismantling it. We begin by unpacking the foundations of anti-Black racism through a historical lens, noting that these systems continue to operate and have lasting impacts on black folks today. This episode also challenges us to confront our unconscious biases through self-reflection and critical reflexivity. We are encouraged to approach this necessary work with grace, humility, and a willingness to learn. We discuss the importance of “calling people in” - creating space for education and conversation rather than shame or exclusion - and explore what true equity and sustainable inclusion look like in practice. This episode is an invitation to deepen our understanding, reflect on our roles in change, and take action from a place of compassion and accountability.

S2, E8: Being Human in a Digital World (with Luc Grey)

S2, E8: Being Human in a Digital World (with Luc Grey)

This week on The Revolutionized Mind, we are joined by Luc Grey! In this episode, Luc shares some of the work that they do as a therapist and everything that they love about providing a safe space for others to navigate their own life journeys. Luc emphasizes the importance of asking questions, being curious, and really thinking about how we exist within different systems. We spend a big portion of this conversation discussing social media use and the balance between simply consuming content and being intentional with the way that we use our own personal platforms. As a therapist, Luc talks about being guided by our values, ensuring that we are present in our daily lives, and constantly checking in with ourselves as we go. We validate that having the world at our fingertips can be exhausting and overwhelming, and we’re just not meant to see or do it all. But, the small ways that we choose to make a difference in this world go a lot farther than we think. This episode is reassuring and empowering, and will definitely encourage you to start thinking about things a little bit differently.

S2, E7: Navigating Second Puberty and Building Self-Compassion (with Serenna Silva)

This week on The Revolutionized Mind, we are joined by Registered Psychotherapist (Qualifying) & Certified Complex Trauma Practitioner, Serenna Silva. In this episode, Serenna talks about her journey of becoming a therapist - from the moment she knew this was her calling to the genuine love and care she has for the people that she works with. She uses her compassionate, empathetic, and warm qualities to build strong therapeutic relationships while also supporting individual growth. We spend a big portion of this conversation discussing the topic of “second puberty” and how these experiences impact us physically, emotionally, and mentally. Serenna shares some science and research behind the changes that happen in our bodies and how these tend to affect our body image and self-esteem. She highlights how we can meet these shifts with self-compassion by practicing gratitude, body neutrality, and just simply talking about what we’re experiencing. We also discuss how things like Botox can really change the way that we perceive ourselves and our own self-worth, emphasizing how important it is to be kind to ourselves and our aging bodies. This episode is your gentle reminder that it’s okay to be human, and that healing often begins with compassion, grace, and a whole lot of love.

S2, E6: Learning, Understanding and Coping with Anxiety (with Wes Woodson)

S2, E6: Learning, Understanding and Coping with Anxiety (with Wes Woodson)

This week on The Revolutionized Mind, we are joined by mental health speaker, author, and CEO, Wes Woodson! In this episode, Wes talks about some of his personal experiences with mental health challenges and how these have inspired him to do the work that he does today. Growing up in a predominantly white suburban town, Wes experienced social anxiety as people would often look at him differently. Additionally, he struggled with test anxiety in school and was put on an Individualized Education Plan (IEP) which contributed to both internalized shame and externalized judgment. Achievement was a big deal in his household and he put a lot of pressure on himself to succeed over the years. When he was 22, he experienced domestic violence and was then placed in an intensive outpatient program. Here, Wes learned a great deal about himself, his anxiety, and other people. He decided to take what he learned and turn it into a mental health education company where he now goes around the country working with students and educators. We discuss the difference between stress and anxiety, share practical strategies that actually work to manage anxiety, and emphasize the importance of nurturing your own personal needs. This conversation is sure to teach you something new and/or bring some positive energy into your day. Full episode coming out tomorrow

S2, E5: Beating the Odds and Building Self-Belief (with Michael Brovac)

This week on The Revolutionized Mind, we are joined by Michael Brovac! In this episode, Michael shares his story of being diagnosed with a rare disease when he was only 12 weeks old. This disease, called IPEX Syndrome, involves immunodeficiency that landed Michael in the hospital for the majority of his first 18 years of life. His younger brother, Cameron, was also diagnosed at an early age which at the time, made them only 2/50 known cases worldwide. Unfortunately, Cameron passed away at the age of 10 and Michael wanted to give up on his own fight. Then, he met someone who significantly impacted his life for the better. Right before he went into emergency surgery, he was pushed to think about things differently. Everything changed from that day forward. He changed his perspectives, he started actually believing in himself, and he learned how to live a full life despite what people told him. Now, he’s a speaker and coach who aims to inspire others along their own journeys. We discuss what it felt like to be "the sick kid", the role his parents and support system have played throughout his life, and the importance of finding your purpose. This conversation is extremely inspiring and eye-opening!

S2, E1: The Butterfly Effect (with Lumenus Community Services)

S2, E1: The Butterfly Effect (with Lumenus Community Services)

Hi everyone - welcome to Episode 1 of Season 2! I am super excited to be back on the microphone sharing many different things with you all. I wanted to start off by talking about where I’ve been and what my goals are for this new season. I took some time to self-reflect on the podcast and really think about how I wanted to show up in this space. I decided to select a theme for this season, and that is going to be The Butterfly Effect. The Butterfly Effect is the idea that small actions can create powerful ripple effects in our lives and the world around us. I, personally, feel a sense of empowerment when I think about The Butterfly Effect and I am hoping that you will too. Every episode will end with a call to action that has the power to contribute to long-term, positive change, either on an individual level or a larger community/global level. These actions are meant to inspire and motivate you to take some small step. When everything feels like it’s on fire and you don’t know where to start, I want to remind you that there ARE things in your control and you CAN make a difference. I hope you love these conversations as much as I do!

We also have two special guests in this episode from the Lumenus team: Senior Director of Fund Development, Laura Champion & Board Director, Dr. Mike Daniels. They tell us all about the amazing work that their organization does in the city of Toronto. They provide Wraparound support to those who need it and offer different services and programs for things like mental health, autism, substance use, caregiving, and so much more. They have an upcoming community fundraiser called, ‘Embody Yoga’ on Sunday, March 30, 2025 from 8am-11am. You can register for the event online (https://www.lumenus.ca/embody-yoga/) or if you can’t make it, please consider making a donation or sharing it within your network. It’s going to be an amazing day and the funds raised will go directly to supporting people in the community - a great “Butterfly Effect” action if I do say so myself.

Thanks so much for tuning in today! Episodes will be coming out every Friday (for now at least). Be sure to follow me on social media @therevolutionizedmind for all the updates.

P.S I’m sorry the audio in my solo parts is a little bit wonky - I recorded this sitting on the couch and I apparently don’t know how to sit still :)

#94- Life with a Hallucination (with Mary Tompros)

Let's start by taking a big deep breath together! This week, we are joined by mental health advocate and social work student, Mary Tompros. Mary lives with a chronic hallucination, and in this episode, she tells us all about how it started, how she learned to adapt, and just generally what it feels like to never be alone. She shares some of the coping skills that therapy has given her, the different perspectives she’s gained, and just how much she’s grown through the challenging times. Mary also addresses the stigma, emphasizing that people who experience psychosis ARE NOT DANGEROUS. There is a big misconception about having hallucinations, and Mary uses her platform to show the true realities of living with a complex mental illness, including the good times and the bad. I’m so grateful that I got the chance to connect with Mary and learn more about her story. This conversation is extremely informative and deep, in a funny and relatable way. Trigger warning: this episode discusses the topic of suicide, so please check in with yourself before consuming this content. Happy Friday! This week on The Revolutionized Mind, we are joined by Alexia who is an Auntie, Community Helper, Indigenous Advocate, Writer, and Dreamer. In this episode, we talk all about Indigenous mental health and well-being. Alexia shares some of the ways that colonial systems have impacted Indigenous folks’ ability to thrive in Canada, the importance of having sovereignty over wellness, and how we can all actively work towards reconciliation on both an individual and systemic level. She also highlights the effects of intergenerational trauma, explains why it’s crucial to move away from a monolithic approach in the mental health space, provides several practical ways that we can support/raise Indigenous voices in our everyday lives, and so much more! This conversation is complex, layered, and uncomfortable at times, but it is so necessary to educate ourselves on the ongoing injustices that exist in our country and learn how we can use our positions of privilege and power to better support Indigenous peoples across Canada. Land Acknowledgment: I wish to acknowledge that the entire country of Canada resides on traditional, unceded, or treaty lands of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis people. I strongly believe in the importance of this acknowledgment, so I encourage you to take a moment to reflect on the privileges that we hold today in living and working on these lands. Currently, I am in Newmarket, Ontario which is located on the traditional territory of the Mississaugas of the Credit, the Anishnabeg, the Chippewa, the Haudenosaunee, and the Wendat peoples and is now home to many diverse First Nations, Inuit and Métis peoples. This area of land is covered by Treaty 13 signed with the Mississaugas of the Credit, and the Williams Treaties signed with multiple Mississaugas and Chippewa bands. As a guest and settler on these lands, it is my duty to unlearn inherent colonial systems, actively work towards reconciliation, and to raise Indigenous voices whenever I can.

Happy World Suicide Prevention Day! As many of you know, suicide is a topic that I hold very near and dear to my heart, so this episode means a lot to me. Today's guest, Laura Bruno, is a current Psychotherapist and former Crisis Worker. She has 10+ years of experience working in the field and is very passionate about both crisis intervention and suicide prevention. In this episode, she explains what a crisis is, how we can support someone going through a difficult time, understanding the difference between self-harm and suicidal ideation, and much more. We talk about the role that the supporter plays in crisis and emphasize things like maintaining boundaries, asking the right questions, and knowing the appropriate "next steps". Although this episode doesn't necessarily focus on the individual who may be experiencing suicidal thoughts, please know that you are not alone and there are people out there willing to sit through your pain with you. Trigger warning: suicide and self-harm are discussed in detail in this conversation. Please take a moment to check in with yourself before listening to this episode to ensure that you are in a good headspace to receive this information. A list of resources (not exhaustive) has been provided below in case anything comes up for you during this conversation or just to save for future use.
