He'll give us all the deets on what to prepare for, and what to expect. I ask him if it's all worth it to go back, listen in to hear his answer! S3 E10: Westcave Discovery Center CEO and Executive Director Trevor Hance
This week I'm speaking with Westcave Discovery Center CEO and Executive Director Trevor Hance.   Westcave is a remarkable outdoor space that is photogenic yes, but also holds a deep responsibility of promoting the positive effects of conservation, and getting children outside.  In our conversation we will discuss why the preserve is so special, but also take a deeper dive into what programs are available for kids when they visit, and what the center offers educationally.  I also hurt my foot.  No bueno.  You can hear me pout about that as well.   Enjoy! 🏕Westcave Outdoor Discovery Center : https://westcave.org/ CHILDREN IN NATURE COLLABORATIVE OF AUSTIN : https://westcave.org/cinca 🔔 Subscribe to my YouTube for more outdoor adventures: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC6c7zMdkXWmktpXWlDnGP5w/ Social Media: Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/thetexastrailhead Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/thetexastrailhead Pinterest: https://www.pinterest.com/texastrailhead  My Gear: 📸Canon 70D: https://amzn.to/3koM6p2 📸DJI Osmo Pocket: https://amzn.to/2HvOyLR PODCAST Equipment: Here is all the gear I use to make this podcast Microphones- Audio Technica ATR-2100 USB https://amzn.to/2tGmvTk Headphones- Audio Technica ATH-M20x https://amzn.to/2t4tPYH Tendak USB 3.0 Hub (To power all of the USB devices) https://amzn.to/36IzQsE Beelife Pop Filter https://amzn.to/37Jsplg NeeWer Professional Mic Stand https://amzn.to/37LpMPM Focusright Scarlett 2i2 Audio Interface https://amzn.to/2TjYe0b By purchasing anything on the gear list I receive a small commission at no extra cost to you. S3 E7: GeoTagging Chat with Matthew Guthrie, Creator of @HikeAustin
November 8th parks are free for everyone in honor of both veterans and active military—it is important to note that reservations will still be highly recommended, and some places required. And that being said… The Texas parks & wildlife announced that reservations can now be made up to 5 months in advance. For a lot of folks the reservations have really put a damper on planning, myself included, but for now 5 months is a really good amount of time to plan a larger trip for your family to some pretty awesome places. So start booking up those holidays now I guess My guest this week is the creator of one of my favorite Instagram accounts, @HikeAustin Matthew Guthrie is someone that has always had a passion for the outdoors, but it was when he grabbed the camera did his love for landscapes, and nature really come to fruition. In our conversation this week we’ll talk about how the account got started, his day job that funny enough doesn’t really have anything to do with the outdoors per se, and what it’s like running account with 30 thousand followers. We’ll also continue the discussion about geo tagging and what responsibilities he’s taken to provide beneficial information for visitors and even the parks themselves. You’ll be surprised to learn some of the comments and messages he gets in his inbox. Anywho—please enjoy this episode, and remember, likes, shares, and 5-star ratings are the life blood for free content, so if you enjoy the Texas trailhead content please give it a rating on apple podcasts, and share a link or two on social media. 🔔 Subscribe to my YouTube for more outdoor adventures: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC6c7zMdkXWmktpXWlDnGP5w/ Social Media: Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/thetexastrailhead Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/thetexastrailhead Pinterest: https://www.pinterest.com/texastrailhead  My Gear (video): 📸Canon 70D: https://amzn.to/3koM6p2 📸DJI Osmo Pocket: https://amzn.to/2HvOyLR My Gear (audio): Microphones- Audio Technica ATR-2100 USB https://amzn.to/2tGmvTk Headphones- Audio Technica ATH-M20x https://amzn.to/2t4tPYH Tendak USB 3.0 Hub (To power all of the USB devices) https://amzn.to/36IzQsE NeeWer Professional Mic Stand https://amzn.to/37LpMPM Focusright Scarlett 2i2 Audio Interface https://amzn.to/2TjYe0b The music I use in my videos and podcasts:  https://www.epidemicsound.com/referral/gft02b/ By purchasing anything on the gear list I receive a small commission at no extra cost to you. S3 E6: Nikole Velasco of Nikole Velasco Photography
This week I’m speaking with Nikole Velasco. She’s an elopement photographer whose focus is getting amazing photos of couples in the outdoors. Recently she has received the Leave No Trace photography certification, so she can spread awareness about the Leave No Trace Principles. She’s had a passion for the outdoors for many years, and taking pictures of that has always been a part of that. It wasn’t until she started the elopement photography did that additional sense of adventure grow. Nikole understands the responsibility of not only the couples she's photographing, but also the locations she’s shooting in and what expectations must be set to not harm the natural spaces that the photo session is in. The leave no trace course teaches photographers to be more responsible in the outdoors, and sets examples of how to speak with clients about certain shots and how to protect themselves and of the natural environment. She will give some examples of things couples should be mindful of in the outdoors, and will share her thoughts on what steps professional photographers have with the natural spaces, taking people into those spaces, and then deciding whether or not to share those spaces with others. You can find more about her photography on her Instagram and her website. @Nikolevelascophoto is her Instagram handle and her website. S3 E3 Dr. Sonia Lucas shares some Physical Therapy tips to prepare for the outdoors.
This week I'm speaking with Dr. Sonia Lucas PT, DPT.  Originally from Oklahoma City, she's now living in Austin, Texas, and now her mission is to 'get more people out and active in nature".  Her love for the outdoors started at an early age, and her passion now transcends to the trails, roads and lakes around Austin. She is really focused on that relationship between you and nature, and that's such a huge part of her work.  Dr Lucas states in her bio, "When I began my transition into the world of physical therapy, I saw other physical therapists helping people to get out of pain and move better. I was inspired to do the same and do it in a way that celebrated the outdoors and healthy living".  In our discussion I wanted to know a little bit more on how to prepare for different lengths of hikes, and other activities we can do to get our bodies ready for hitting the trail.  She also gave some great tips on footwear, and a few simple exercises to get our bodies warmed up.  If you'd like to learn more about what she does, give her a visit at her website: Active ATX Rehab & Wellness. https://www.activeatxrehab.com/ You can also find out more information on her Facebook page by the same name. Click this link: https://www.facebook.com/activeatxrehab For all of you listeners, she has three FREE e-books available to download.  You can learn about proper footwear, 10 tips to tackle pain, and 5 exercises to prepare for any hike.  Click the link above to see those as well.  Please enjoy this week's episode.

S3 E2: The break and LCRA Park- Matagorda Bay Nature Park
It seems a bit pretentious to talk about where I've been like I'm someone important.   But I think taking breaks is important.  This podcast had been running pretty consistently since the end of December 2019, and when I was wrapping up season two I was feeling a bit uninspired.  There was nothing dramatic going on at the time, and I wasn't really hiking as much because of the reservation system.   I felt that taking a bit of a breather in between seasons, which are not based on anything besides feeling 15 is a good number, so I could regroup and collect some more thoughts and ideas about what I wanted to talk about.  So during that time I talked to a handful of people who you'll be hearing from, either already in the first episode or upcoming. I got to visit a few places near the coast.  One of which you'll hear about in this episode.  The LCRA parks are typically near the Colorado river, and the Matagorda Bay Nature Park just happens to be located at the end of the river.  The parking lot is just next to where it meets the Gulf of Mexico.  This environment is home to some amazing birding, fishing, and camping, so give it a listen and I hope it inspires you to get out and check it out! S3. E1. Dr Wetegrove talks about the importance of Nature for Mental Health
Welcome back to The Texas Trailhead podcast!  September is suicide prevention month, so I figured I would begin this season with a discussion about mental health.  According to the American foundation for suicide prevention, suicide is the 10th leading cause of death in the united states. In 2018 over 48 thousand people died by suicide. In 2020 the rates should see continued increase as it has been on a constant rise since 1999. This week I’m speaking with Dr Wetegrove, a licensed psychologist based out of the San Antonio area. One of her main areas of focus is working with people in the outdoors and uses nature to work on mental health. In our discussion we definitely talk about her practice, but I wanted to know more about mental health in general, who’s affected the most, what we can do to normalize the discussion surrounding it, and some best practices we can do at home. Mental health is really important to me and it’s something I have to focus on daily. Nature was one of the main things I found that helped me, so I definitely feel that the discussion around mental health is important, but what’s also important is making it easier to talk about it and make it more accessible. We’ll get into more detail during the interview, but it’s important to note, especially in our current climate that access to mental health providers AND the outdoors should be accessible to everyone. This isn’t a political statement.  So when I say, or when we see companies posting things like “the outdoors are for everyone” no one should be mad at that, or saying things like ‘of course they are’. But realize that in some instances it’s the access that isn’t made available. Not everyone has the same access to parks, trails, and outdoor spaces. Just like not everyone has access to mental health services. Dr. Wetegrove talks about some of the difficulties for people of color and lower financial backgrounds including the access to mental health care. We’ll also discuss when to start to talking to children and he work with women in the outdoors. And since we’ll be discussing the positive effects of the outdoors, it’s important to note that making health care, and the outdoors more accessible for all will help more people in the long run. So please enjoy this episode. And one quick note, I realized after recording I had some microphone issues that you may hear later in the episode. I apologize in advance, and I hope it doesn’t distract from the message. The Texas Trailhead Podcast S2 E12: Happy Father’s Day & Video Game Ramble
Father’s Day is important to me for a couple reasons: I’m now a dad, and I’m grateful that my daughter has shown some appreciation for spending time in the outdoors with me. Additionally, my dad was a huge part of my enjoyment of the outdoors now, and we’ve recently taken an epic road trip spending time outside. But I’m going to share some fun stories of times when things didn’t go as planned. Ha. Additionally, hiking isn’t my only passion, so for some I’m going to bore you with chatter about one of my favorite video games, but there is an outdoor twist. Enjoy!

The Texas Trailhead Podcast S2 E8: Should you visit the Narrows and Palmetto SP
Happy Memorial Day weekend!  My thoughts are with everyone that has been lost in battle, so make sure you all take time to send your regards.  This week is a bit of a shorty.  I'll be talking about a Hot Topic that came up this week in the hiking message boards.  The Narrows are outside of Wimberley, TX , and while quite magical to look at, require visitors to walk on river bottom to avoid people's private property.  The issue is- not everyone is following the rules.  The second segment is a quick overview of one of my favorite state parks: Palmetto State Park.  Thanks for listening!  If you enjoy the podcast please share it with your friends.  And if you REALLY enjoy it and want to support, please click the donate button on the homepage of my podcast an Anchor to see how to contribute to the podcast for as little as .99 cents/month.  So grab your backpack and put on your hiking shoes, this is The Texas Trailhead.

Just wanted to let you all know that if you’re listening to this on its release day, so may 1st, It’s my birthday! And I hate to beg, but for my birthday I’d love if you could do something to show your support and if you could share this podcast with someone who you think may enjoy it!  That would be great— and If you listen to me on Apple, leaving a 5-star review would help tremendously- Ok— This week I don’t have an interview, but I do have some goodies to share with you.  I love goodies, so I hope you do to.  Because I live in central texas I’m in San Marcos quite a bit and they are home to one of my favorite trails systems, the San Marcos Greenbelt Alliance.  They’re a non profit group of amazing, hard working individuals that maintain one of my favorite day hike.  There are three total nature parks, but the one I’m talking about on this episode is Purgatory Creek Nature Trail.  I love it so much, and I almost don’t want to tell y’all about it, so if you visit please leave it they way you found it or better, or I’ll come find you and make nasty faces. In my second segment I’m doing a little follow up review for a pair of shoes I haven’t reviewed before.  I just waited about 4ish months to talk about them because I definitely have a different opinion about them today than I did when I first bought them. It’s my review of the Astral TR1 Mesh trail runner shoes. I’ll also be featuring the review on an upcoming YouTube video, so if go look for the texas trailhead on YouTube and make sure you like and subscribe.  I’ll leave a link in the description— So let’s get to it! S2 E2: Camping at Home and Interview with my buddy David
The Texas Trailhead Podcast Season 2 Episode 2: Camping at Home & Interview with my Buddy David Welcome to the podcast- this is danny, and I’ve gotta say—I’m pretty excited about this weeks episode. First up—if you live in Texas then you’re probably aware that the state parks have now officially closed. It’s definitely eerie and no fun and it is really limiting the places that people can get out and hike. Oh man it was a frenzy on social media. But all is not lost. I wanna talk about ways to find nature close to home. I’ll be sharing my experience about campin out in the backyard.   And in the second segment I want to introduce you to an old friend of mine. We met many years ago working at the outlet mall, and we have been buddies ever since. He’s a huge fan of the outdoors—we’ve camped together, we’ve hiked together, but now he lives all the way in seattle. We had a nice chat about what hiking is like out in Washington—some of his favorite places to hike—and he even sneaks in some backpacking tips too. The Texas Trailhead Podcast Season 2 Episode 1: Urban Hiking & The Coleman Two-Burner Stove
Welcome to the 2nd season of The Texas Trailhead podcast! I’m very excited about the episodes made so far, and looking forward to keeping them going as long as y’all are listening! I’d love to talk to y’all about the trails too. If you download the Anchor app we can just chat on the phone about our favorite hobby.  This episode is gonna be a shorty. I just wanted to share my story of hiking with the kiddo around the neighborhood and how much fun it was. I went off on a tangent a little bit, but I just wanted to encourage people to spend time outside, but maybe a little closer to home.  In the second half I’m gonna give a gear recommendation for one of my favorite items to use while car camping. The Coleman two-burner stove. It’s a classic, and it’s a beast. And if you somehow don’t know about it I’m going to talk about how easy it is to set up. The Texas Trailhead Episode 15 : Coastal Road Trip and Solomon Trail Runner Review For this weeks episode my daughter and I decided to go on a little coastal road trip. The Texas Trailhead Podcast Episode 14: Coronavirus and the outdoors,Hill Country State Natural Area
When I recorded this first part of this episode it was the Coronavirus situation in the U.S. was just declared a national emergency. It meant that states could now access funding to help people a bit more.  That was 5 days ago before this episode airing, and it already feels much different.  My mood was down, and I’m sorry if it lags.  I wasn’t sure what to say, but I’m hopeful that it’s going to get better. That being said... My visit to Hill Country SNA was such a delight.  I hiked it before the situation seemed to begin collapsing.  The virus was spreading, but when I went hiking my main concern was getting back to the car to be able to pick up my daughter from school on time.  I recorded this episode on camera as I did a Instagram live feed (my account is @danolaurel, follow if you enjoy my content!), so apologies for a couple of the gaps.  I’ve since been on the road and didn’t have too much time to edit some of the dead air.

The Texas Trailhead Podcast Episode 12: BBQ & Favorite Places to Hike...so far.
We went to Mother Neff State Park, and while there got hungry.  We were just south of Waco, TX so I enlisted the help of my good buddy who produces with his friend Andrew the podcast Tales from the Pits.  They know good barbecue, and thankfully answered my text because he recommended two places: Millers Smokehouse and Guess Family Barbecue.   Miller's was about to close, so we went to Guess', and boy what a way to end a day of hiking.  SO good!  What does this have to do with hiking?!   Im getting there, I promise.  While eating my wife and I decided that we weren't going to be north of Austin any time soon, and our daughter has been needing/wanting a desk to do school work, so we decided that we were going to stop at IKEA on the way home.  We got her desk under the condition that she had to do some school assignments at her new desk for fun.  My assignment for her was that she had to come up with an idea for this podcast episode. She came up with: Your favorite places to hike...so far.  WHEW.  So there we have it.  This is a quicky with some fun old fashioned story-telling.  If you enjoy this podcast please share it with your friends.  If you love it then I'd love if you went to my homepage on Anchor.fm (The Texas Trailhead) and signed up for a monthly contribution to keep it going! It's a rainy and dreary day.  I didn't get to hike and instead decided to ramble about what I do to get my nature fix when I can't go hike.  It's not easy to fulfill that need to stay busy when I can't hike, and staying home all day hasn't always been a good idea for me. The Texas Trailhead Podcast Episode 6: Bastrop State Park
I’ve been to Bastrop State park multiple times now since the fire I have driven by it for almost a decade driving back to Houston, but nothing prepares you for seeing the devastation up close. Bastrop is a place that I love to visit and hike. I send people there frequently for the trails, the views, and the history. This is after all another of the CCC parks. So there are some key points of interest that I want to focus on The historic water fountains. Fehrs Overlook And the other scenic overlook that is across from the water tower. So definitely come hike here. I think you’ll enjoy the terrain changes and find some great challenges on the trails here. I still see new things everytime I hike here. And one quick note to add. The park map designates the trails as colors, the trail map designates them with the names I provided. I recommend just grabbing both maps and using them as a guide, as some posts show either. And if you’re there just for the day its helpful to know, well it was for me anyway, but each parking spot along the main road is also a trailhead. So if youre planning a loop, you can just see where you want to get your car. The Texas Trailhead Episode 1: Starting out on another adventure
Welcome to The Texas Trailhead podcast!  In this first episode I'd like to introduce myself and let you know my mission statement: Share the love of the outdoors, and chat with others who found something special in nature.  By sharing these stories I hope to get others outside.  I want to know the same thing from everyone.  Why did you start spending time outside? What is your favorite outdoor memory? I'll also be sharing my favorite hikes, camp outs, and the gear I'm using.  So get on your hiking shoes, put on your backpack, and let's go out on an adventure together.  This is The Texas Trailhead.  This is also number one and I know sound quality is beyond important. If anyone shows any interest, haha, I’ll be getting a new microphone pronto. Sorry the sound is all over the place!
