MPowder's ambition is to make midlife a superpower by providing an inclusive space where individuals can evaluate interventions, expert insight, personal stories and emerging research; where the wisdom we carry in our bones about our biology is recognised, where science and traditional medicine are both respected and where we have agency to select our own path to part 2.

20. How to overcome the gender wealth gap through sustainable investing with Ellen Kelly, co-founder and CEO of Savvy

Ellen Kelly is the Co-Founder and CEO of Savvy, a sustainable investment platform.

After studying and working in ESG financial markets in Ireland, Ellen moved to Paris to pursue a Master's in Sustainability and Social Innovation at HEC Paris. It is there she met her co-founder Jérémie. Both passionate about getting more investment into sustainable funds and increasing transparency, they started Savvy. Ellen combines her background in financial services and her expertise in Sustainability to prove sustainability's place as a driver for financial performance. Savvy allows users to create a sustainability profile based on their personal preferences, match to funds that best align with their profile, and track the impact of investments made. Ellen has a strong focus on increasing participation among women in both entrepreneurship and investing.

What you'll learn in this episode:

  • Benefits of living and working in different countries throughout your life
  • Importance of having good mentors and managers in a typically toxic high pressure work environment like banking
  • Leveraging different communication tools to establish boundaries and create a healthy culture in a startup and scaleup
  • Benefits of clear and bold employer branding when hiring and growing a team yet being mindful of diversity and creating a monoculture
  • The need for better education and guidance for sustainable investing and why we need to be looking at the gender wealth gap as well as the gender pay gap
  • Why it’s important to be honest about the realities and challenges of being an entrepreneur and how to use LinkedIn, conferences and awards for visibility and networking without getting caught up in superficial success
  • Importance of having a team to grow a sustainable business and reminding yourself that doing so is a marathon not a sprint (you don’t have to work weekends to build a profitable company!)
  • Why diversifying investments and assets is critical to building longterm sustainable wealth and financial independence

15: Rebekah Lloyd: Thank You & Merry Christmas

I know I said that the last episode was going to be the final episode of series 1, but I wanted to take a moment to create this message of love and gratitude to you all. Also, to invite you reflect on your own life with a few key questions as you go into the new year, and to ask for your feedback on how TIL can take things up a notch and create more impact for you in 2023.

This time last year, This Independent Life didn't exist, and although I got a little emotional whilst recording this, ultimately I want to take a moment to share some of the successes and thank each and every one of you for your support, for choosing to let me into your life, be it in a big or small way, and for the opportunity to be a part of your own independence journey.

2022 has been a truly life-changing year for me. There are so many things I wish to share and speak about with you, but above all, I want to say thank you. From the bottom of my heart, thank you again to each and everyone of you for being part of the This Independent Life community and for supporting me on this journey. If there's ever anything I can do to help and support you, or your organisation, know that my door is always open. This is only the beginning and I can’t wait to see what 2023 brings.

Martina is the founder of Comma Periods, a holistic hub for period health with the mission to end period pain.

Comma started as a monthly subscription box but quickly transitioned into an education platform as a response to the urgent request for radical period pain relief. Since then, she's been on a journey towards healing her pain in a holistic way, together with experts, period coaches and industry leaders. After the successful testing period, she began creating a platform to amplify the message that period pain isn't normal - and there is a way to heal. Comma is currently organising a series of events that will teach women and menstruators the basics of period health. Stay tuned for the launch of their very first cohort, where you'll be guided step by step towards a pain-free period, together with experts, weekly catch-ups and community support!

3. How to use period care as a force for change - Afsaneh Parvizi-Wayne: Founder of Freda

3. How to use period care as a force for change - Afsaneh Parvizi-Wayne: Founder of Freda

Afsaneh Parvizi-Wayne is the founder of Freda, an award-winning natural and organic period and bladder care product subscription service that has been created by women for women, and that give back to women as a portion of every Freda purchase is donated to initiatives worldwide tackling period poverty.

Freda like to think they're more than just a period subscription service. They want to be a gathering place for health- and socially-conscious women who want to change the way the world looks at both period products and periods themselves – as a natural and healthy process. Affi was inspired to start Freda after seeing refugees stuck at various border crossings in Europe on the news. Coming from a refugee background herself, these images struck a chord, and she started to consider the practical ramifications of displacement. She found that these women just don’t have access to period products, and that they aren’t included in the hygiene kits provided by the UN and relief organisations – societal taboos and stigma have caused the menstrual needs of women to be overlooked, in refugee camps and in all public spaces.

The more she looked into it, the more she became frustrated with the impact of this stigma not just on access to these products, but on how they are made – with cheap unnecessary chemicals that don’t legally have to be disclosed –, and marketed – patronisingly! Freda aims to represent something new in this industry, both in terms of the product itself, and what we stand for. Their products contain no nasty chemicals, without compromise on protection or comfort - their tampons are made of 100% certified organic cotton and are biodegradable, hypoallergenic and free from chemicals and synthetic fibres commonly found in tampons, whilst their eco-friendly pads are made from 70% natural, renewable materials.
