This Is Not What I Meant

This Is Not What I Meant

By Anudeep

Hey! This is Anudeep and I write reviews and I like to talk about it. That's pretty much it. Reading is nice, and discussing plot lines even better. All the work of arts draw inspiration from somewhere and citing these references along with breaking down the story, "This is Not what I meant" represents all that is said in the subtext.

The Boys: What was that? ft. Anmol

The Boys: What was that? ft. Anmol

Amazon Prime video's The Boys is the unconventional superhero show you've been waiting for. In this episode, Anudeep and Anmol spill the tea about how they started watching the show (at what point we went OMG this is why I'm gonna watch the rest of it!) and their favourite characters (you'd be surprised who it is!) the writing (feels like a 3 season long movie!) and the fantastic VFX (not for weak stomachs!).

From the cursing to the gore, to the explicit scenes that warrant this NC-17 rating, the Boys are all about the truth of being a superhero and the side no one talks about. Spoiler warning for Seasons 1, 2, and 3 and the audio quality of the host dips at the 30-minute mark but couldn't miss posting this.

*Drumroll* This is not what I meant is back from Hiatus!

Suits: Formula For the Win! Ft. Samir

Suits: Formula For the Win! Ft. Samir

Mike Ross has never been to law school but he gets a job as a...lawyer. That's it. That's the plot. And still USA Network's show, Suits ran for 9 Seasons!

In this episode we talk about how Aaron Korsh (the creator of the show) managed to make corporate law interesting to the viewers, along with our first impressions of the show. Listen as we discuss the plot, the writing, character development and the role of cameos in this New York based Law drama. We also answer some questions such as:

- Why Law firms are named after their partners?
- Extra-ordinary recreational activities of rich people
- Could Mike Ross have found another way to get the money in the first episode?
- Are stereotypes and discrimination forgivable based on the time period of a show?
- Goddamn Censorship! (PG-13 Adult shows)
- Why can't some brilliant people recognise their true potential?

Inventing Anna: The Power of Illusion of Wealth

Inventing Anna: The Power of Illusion of Wealth

Anna Delvey is the real "Fake it till you make it" deal, scamming half of the New York's elitist and making her way through her unapproachable charm and critiqing charisma. This Shondaland production is the show to binge on for a spicy tale of how the rich just want clout and exclusivity, so much so that tshe scammed this whole club with fumes of an illusion of wealth. Fame & Connections is what Anna offers in exchange for... well Chanel, Dior, Hotels and a lifestyle of a German Heiress.

Well Anna may not have time for this (What's up show reference!) but you sure do, so listen to the episode and let's break down the illusion.

The Tinder Swindler - Navigating Dating & Trust ft. Anmol

The Tinder Swindler - Navigating Dating & Trust ft. Anmol

Netflix's latest - The Tinder Swindler talks about Simon Leviev, the son of a diamond mogul (NOT!) conning women by matching with them on the popular dating app Tinder. What follows is a con filled with private jets, caviar, luxurious gifts turning into a money leaching relationship. Discussing the case of these three women, Anmol and I talk about what to do when you find yourself in such a situation where you can't think clearly. Stay tuned as we discuss the disparities between the culture of dating in India and in Europe and our reactions to this very interesting documentary.

Just take a minute and think - How exposed are you online, my listener?

PS. Write to me about what did you think about the documentary and what would you do with a guy like Simon, at tinwimpod@gmail.com

True Crime, Conspiracy Theories & Himesh Reshammiya ft. Sonal

True Crime, Conspiracy Theories & Himesh Reshammiya ft. Sonal

In this episode, Sonal and I discuss Netflix true-crime documentary and docuseries, The Karma Killings and The House of Secrets while discussing the difference between content for OTT platforms and Cable TV in India. We also share our mutual observation about how some daytime news platforms tend to sensationalize incidents (it's almost as if they had their own conspiracy youtube channel with over a billion subscribers) and a song by the 2000s pop-leader Himesh Reshammiya that wasn't sung as much as it should've been due to a curse.

Sonal is the host of Imagination Nation where she posts her original stories inspired by daily life events.

Your Lie in April: What was that? ft. Meowandmommy

Discussing a gut-wrenching, heart-warming show about a bunch of adolescent musicians (the music is no joke guys!) with *Otaku* Alifiya! the person behind the beautiful Instagram page, meowandmommy_
Alifiya and I talk about how we came across Your Lie April, what was the actual lie? did everyone have a secret? Arima's PTSD, Kaori being Flawless, Watari's maturity and Tsuboki's rawness, the writing of the show kept us engaged in this passionate discussion for some time so do stick around for THE THEORIES! (because let's be real, what's an episode of This is Not what I meant about theories?)
Subtext, Symbolism and Music- Your lie in April has it all!
And of course, Love.

Squid Game: What was that? ft. Anahita

The Nostalgia of childhood games in a life and death tournament, this Netflix series became a sensation overnight. In this episode of This is Not what I meant, we break down as to why Squid Game was lucrative and a sleeper hit. Discussing the Korean TV & film industry (they're not all just romcoms okay!) theories (if you could've predicted that ending) noticing all the foreshadowing and diving in-depth about the games and characters. This is the First time I'm having a guest on the show and it turned out a VERY VERY FUN EPISODE! WITH SPOILERS of course. How else do you geek out anyway?

Friendship in Absentia; Let's talk about Mad Men!

Friendship in Absentia; Let's talk about Mad Men!

Set in the 1960s, this show took the television world by storm. Mad Men, starring Jon Hamm, Christina Hendricks, Elizabeth Moss and a horde of the amazing cast with brilliant writing, is about an ad agency on Madison Avenue in 1960 New York City. In this episode, I talk about the charm of a period drama executed this well along with breaking down the complex characters such as that of Roger Sterling and Don Draper. From relating an 18th-century poem to a dominant and driven man like Don Draper, to discussing sexism, culture and relationships in the series, this episode of This is not what I meant is heavy with subtext.

First of many in this series called "Shows based in New York".

A Study in Curses & Conjectures: Jujutsu of Jujutsu Kaisen

Gege Akutami's Jujutsu Kaisen has everything you would want in a show: Good writing, Amazing Characters, Mystery, Action, Gore and Humour. In this episode, I break down the anime's first season from the plot to theories about how that one scene, one comment changes everything in the story. From Zeno's paradox to justifying villains, this episode of This is Not What I meant is a must 'listen' for fans of the show. It is also a first for this podcast to walk into spoiler territory because why not? It's not a discussion till we get specific :)

Unpacking the Philosophy of Psycho Pass

Unpacking the Philosophy of Psycho Pass

A month later and /this is not what I meant/ is back with another anime episode, this time talking about the first season of Psycho Pass. Lots of themes and theories. This show is an amalgamation of Orwell's 1984, Nietzsche's Good and Evil and a utilitarian government that's definitely swinging the other way. Sit back, relax and get your mind blown by how well Psycho Pass handles these concepts. Explaining the Sybil system and crime coefficients (what?? Judging a person's criminal latency? wow) and the amazing characters of this cyber-punk anime.

Another lockdown as we approach one whole year of This is not what I meant as a podcast! Hope you all are doing well and staying safe.

Kakegurui: Getting your Gambling Freak on!

A crazy, intense, over-the-top Anime in which there's an entire school where gambling is the norm. Keeping up the illusion of free will by making insane bets? Sure why not.

Twice Upon An Anime

Twice Upon An Anime

Continuing the conversation on why to watch anime. Twice upon an anime is about re-entering the genre as an adult, watching adult animes. Extreme imagery, psychological themes, complex plots, all fun to watch. The 4th episode here on This is Not What I meant about Anime (LOL) but finally, I got to my point of starting this series in the first place. Discussing friendship shown on Animes, the complex plots and will be talking about Kakegurui, Assassination Classroom, Psycho-Pass, Dr Stone, and YES, revisiting Attack on Titan in future episodes *short ones, of course,*.

Death Note Ft. Black Mirror (Twice upon an Anime)

Moving ahead on the anime discussion, talking about Death Note and how it relates to Black Mirror's Nosedive in terms of Good and Evil being a necessity. This second episode in the series talks about how if someone had a death note what would they do with it, (I did a poll on this) Do let me know yourself as well. Just plain freaking about the show and how Ryuk is the most passively chaotic character ever and that everyone should watch Death Note for it being so over the top!

Once upon an Anime

Once upon an Anime

Why should you watch anime? also haven't you yet?! IT IS AMAZING. In this episode, I talk about what is anime, the history of anime (a little bit of it), why it has gained traction. From Astro Boy by Osamu Tezuka to Shinchan and Doraemon being super popular among Indians, this podcast is all over the place with things anime. Remember that animated film "Ramayana"? Yep, that is an anime as well. Listen to know why the characters have large eyes and why the houses are the same as that in Doraemon and Death Note. Freaking out hasn't been this informed and weird lol.

Attack on Titan: What was that?

Attack on Titan: What was that?

/rant-review-excitement/

Breaking down the first episode of Attack on Titan. Lots of emotions; I mean what even are those things? Talking about the writing of the show, and just giving a play by play of what went on in my head as I watched it. Also talking about how often people misrepresent their enthusiasm for a show when they suggest it to someone. Be eloquent, is what Anudeep says haha. Finally came around to watching this Anime. It's a fun episode. I have only watched the first episode of AoT and so there are NO SPOILERS, except of course for the episode, duh.

The Cartoon-Network of Theories: Part 2

The Cartoon-Network of Theories: Part 2

*Episode contains a bit of HINDI*
Is the show Powerpuff girls a metaphor for pedophilic half brothers? How did Johnny Bravo of all the shows gets greenlit in the first place? Are the kids in Dragon tales actually on LSD? Is courage the cowardly dog actually cowardly? Is Madame Foster an imaginary friend HERSELF? Is Mr Bean an ALIEN?? Listen to Anudeep as she talks about these theories and the origin of Cartoon Network. The '90s were a wild time for Television, we don't see how it would be any different for cartoon shows. From Craig McCracken's Powerpuff girls (or should I say Whoopass Girls) and his imaginary friends to John Dilworth's courage the cowardly dog, in part 2 of the cartoon network of theories, we cover everything you'd want to know and then some between the line stuff cuz you know, "This is not what I meant" is all about that subtext, baby.
Intro and outro: the theme song from Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends

The Cartoon-Network of Theories: Part 1

The Cartoon-Network of Theories: Part 1

*EPISODE CONTAINS HINDI* The 90s & 2000's cartoons are pretty OG. Much awaited episode for This is not what I meant. Been in trains of thought but it's finally here! Listen to Anudeep talk about how Tom & Jerry shouldn't have gotten a green light to be a kids show (UMM WHAT?), how Bob the Builder is communist propaganda, Oswald an octopus who lives on land! And of course, Noddy being racist accidentally. Finally, listeners will get an insight into why this channel is called This is Not What I meant as she goes over your favourite cartoon shows and what all subtext they contain. The episode is full of all old theme songs so feel free to sing along while you wash dishes and just think about how the year 2020 is kinda like that never-ending summer vacation (not) which Phineas and Ferb sing about. Except, of course, we don't have access to whatever those guys had, I mean do they have a secret lair? Unki mom ko pata kaise nahi chalta about their projects? What is happening? Well, you'll soon find out.  Theme songs used: Phineas & Ferb Intro, Tom & Jerry, Oswald, Roadrunner, flintstones, scooby doo, noddy, bob the builder. Music is not owned by me. Comedy shrouding the Monotony: A dive into The Office (US)

Comedy shrouding the Monotony: A dive into The Office (US)

The Office (US) is an American sitcom that came out in 2005, starring Steve Carell, John Krasinski, and more. The scenes and the dialogues from this show are now global because of their relatability and people humour. In the second episode of this podcast series, I break down how such an innane and ordinary premise resulted in a comedy that has audience laughing for a long time. It is the story of the employees of a regional company in Pennsylvania, called Dunder Mifflin, which sells paper. From Jim playing pranks on Dwight to Michael Scott, surprisingly being the best regional manager there is, this series has everything on your checklist for an all time show to watch.

Why you need to Watch/Read/Listen, The Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy by Douglas Adams

The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams is a comedy science fiction, telling the story of an Earthman hitchhiking with an Alien across the galaxy, after his planet gets destroyed. This is the first episode *Yay* of this Podcast series, where I breakdown the intelligence of the book and its impact on pop culture today and why it is the most absurd, amazing and hilarious book you'll ever read. I stay true to my word, and this episode is surprisingly spoiler free. Follow //This is not what I meant// on instagram for some more insider info about it and many other such things. Hope you enjoy!
