3D From Nothing- Season 2 Episode 1- Tom talks to Velo3D salesman Paul Hollowaty
Paul Hollowaty, at one point held to title of number 1 additive salesman in the World! Now with Velo3D has a lot to say in this episode about the start of Velo3D and the the current business plan.
Paul talks about Benny Buller's original vision and how the contract manufacturing now works.
The solution Velo3D has delivered to Lockheed Martin includes a Sapphire printer, Velo3D’s Flow print preparation software, its Assure quality assurance and control software, and its underlying Intelligent Fusion manufacturing process, which optimizes the additive manufacturing process by combining process simulation, geometry-based detection, and build process monitoring during print execution. It also provides customers with the ability to produce identical parts across any Velo3D Sapphire printer, so as production needs increase, customers can merely add additional printers to their production facilities anywhere in the world or utilize Velo3D’s network of contract manufacturers.
A recent article at 3Dnatives.com says "Velo3D points to advanced metal AM solutions, especially its own Sapphire® systems, as the solution to overcome these barriers. Industrial metal AM machines allow for more aerospace companies to turn confidently towards additive manufacturing. But how exactly will this be accomplished?
Looking at each barrier individually, advanced metal systems have built-in solutions to overcome them, making metal 3D printing more reliable and easier for users. For example, a non-contact recoater arm in advanced AM systems eliminated issues with protruding surfaces, ensuring that there will be no recoater clashes. Also we discuss how researchers from the Japanese Yamagata University have developed a fully-3D printed actuator that could form the basis of a jellyfish-like soft robot. Using a UV-based 3D printer, the team were able to cure a newly-synthesized Particle Double Network (P-DN) hydrogel, into a mechanism that contracts in a similar way to the muscles of a moon jellyfish. Building on their novel device, the scientists now intend to create an entire aquatic robot, with potential marine wildlife monitoring applications.

Nils said “With hybrid machines, you have a big advantage,” said Nils Niemeyer, product manager for additive at DMG Mori USA. “You can build larger-volume parts very rapidly and finish-machine the parts on the same machine. There is less handling of the parts, smaller buffers. You get a finish-built product out of one setup. You integrate your supply chain completely into one machine.”
Using the same machine for additive and subtractive also means operators can mill the inside of the part, which isn’t possible on a separate finishing machine that can finish mill only the part exterior, Norfolk said.
“When you 3D print a part, you can always go back and mill the outside of the part on another machine but you can not mill the internal features,” he said. “Hybrid manufacturing on one machine allows you to clean up the internal features as you go.”

And Sean, why don't you tell us a little bit about yourself and how that title came about?
Yeah. Hi. I started working for a 3d printing farm about 2015. I did not have a lot of experience. I think the thing I learned quickly was how undependable these printers were. The manufactures did not tell the users about this, but we found out fast that there is a lot of maintenance and user errors that people need to know about. That is probably the reason my book is in the top three on Amazon- because people need it!
