Rising on the Toes of Faith
Jeff Hendrix on Ephesians 1:15-23.
In his letter to the Ephesians, Paul acknowledges their strong faith and love but prays for them to grow in hope. This hope comes from understanding God's calling, the riches of his inheritance, and the incomparable greatness of his power. By relying on the Holy Spirit and recognizing Christ's authority over all things, believers can live with a transformative hope that impacts the world around them.

Easter Sunday: My Lord and My God!
Bart Byl on John 20:19-31.
Though his followers had abandoned him at his crucifixion, the risen Jesus appears to them, offering peace and commissioning them to announce the forgiveness of sins in his name. Even the most skeptical disciple, Thomas, is transformed by his encounter with the risen Lord into a bold witness who would carry the Gospel to the ends of the earth.

The Cosmic, Crucified Christ
Bart Byl on Colossians 1:15-23.
The apostle Paul declares the cosmic supremacy of Christ, emphasizing his role as the creator, sustainer, and ultimate purpose of all things. Through his death on the cross, Christ reconciled all things to God, who took the initiative to restore the relationship between sinful humanity and their Creator. We now stand before God without blemish or accusation, having been freed from the powers of sin and death, sharing in Christ's ministry of reconciliation.

Humble and Hospitable (3 John)
Bart Byl on 3 John.
Series: Discipleship on the Edge
In his third letter, the apostle John commends Gaius for his faithfulness and hospitality towards traveling missionaries. However, he also condemns Diotrephes for his selfish ambition, gossiping, and refusal to welcome fellow believers. These contrasting examples of moral behaviour prompt us to ask ourselves: are we ambitious for ourselves, or for the glory of the Name?

Loving and Discerning (2 John)
Bart Byl on 2 John.

Ready and Resilient (2 Peter 3)
Bart Byl on 2 Peter 3.
Series: Discipleship on the Edge
The apostle Peter warns that in the last days, scoffers will mock the promise of Christ's return, deliberately forgetting the divine origin and end of all things. However, God is not slow in keeping his promise, but patient, desiring all to come to repentance before the day of the Lord arrives. Therefore, we ought to live holy and godly lives, making every effort to be found spotless and blameless, growing in the grace and knowledge of Christ.

Bound and Free (Philemon)
Bart Byl on Philemon.
Series: Discipleship on the Edge
Paul's letter to Philemon addresses a delicate situation involving Onesimus, a slave who had left his master and then becomes a Christian under Paul's guidance. Paul urges Philemon, Onesimus's master, to welcome him back not just as a slave but as a brother in Christ, encouraging him to forgive and welcome him. The letter highlights the transformative power of the gospel, challenging societal norms and creating new relationships of love within the Christian community.

The Ethics of the Kingdom
Eli Moyer on Luke 6:1-11
Series: Snapshots of Jesus: Taken by Luke
Jesus confronts the Pharisees' strict Sabbath interpretations, demonstrating through his actions (like healing the man with a withered hand) that mercy and doing good supersede legalistic restrictions. Christian ethics involve more than just outward obedience to rules; it's about embodying God's love and holiness in every aspect of life. Because true miracles in Christianity may not always be dramatic signs and wonders, but often are the profound transformations of heart that lead to genuine love for God and others.

Blessed and Grateful (1 Timothy)
Bart Byl on 1 Timothy 4:1-5.
Series: Discipleship on the Edge
In the last days, the Spirits warns, deceitful teachers will appear in the church teaching the doctrine of demons: forbidding marriage and forcing people to abstain from certain foods. Paul urges us to resist this distortion of Christian asceticism by practicing gratitude and enjoyment of God's creation as acts of worship. The best defense against the Enemy’s hatred of creation is a childlike simplicity of heart that finds joy in God's gifts. In doing so, believers fulfill their priestly role in unifying the spiritual and material, highlighting the ultimate goal of all creation being offered back to God in Christ.

Wholeness Restored
Jeff Hendrix on Luke 5:17-26.
Series: Snapshots of Jesus: Taken by Luke
A paralyzed man’s friends, desperate to bring him to Jesus for healing, lower him through a roof to the rabbi’s feet. Jesus, seeing their faith, first forgives the man's sins. Then, demonstrating his authority to both forgive sins and heal infirmities, commands him to rise from his cot. The miracle offers a profound demonstration of the inseparable connection between physical healing and spiritual forgiveness.

Hopeful and Alert (1 Thessalonians)
Bart Byl on 1 Thessalonians 4:13-5:11.

John the Baptist had one mission: to prepare the way for Jesus. His role in connecting the Old and New Testaments, his unique ministry, confrontational preaching, and the ultimate sacrifice he made make him one of the most memorable characters in the Bible. His story invites reflection on how our spiritual paths have been shaped by those before us and how we influence those who follow. Tony Hanmer brings insights into John the Baptist's significant impact on the gospel story and our own callings.

Knowing Him Who is True
Tony Hanmer on 1 John 5:13-21.
Series: 1 John—Life in God’s Love
Our final message in our 1 John series.
"I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God so that you may know that you have eternal life. This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us. And if we know that he hears us—whatever we ask—we know that we have what we asked of him.
If you see any brother or sister commit a sin that does not lead to death, you should pray and God will give them life. I refer to those whose sin does not lead to death. There is a sin that leads to death. I am not saying that you should pray about that. All wrongdoing is sin, and there is sin that does not lead to death.
We know that anyone born of God does not continue to sin; the One who was born of God keeps them safe, and the evil one cannot harm them. We know that we are children of God, and that the whole world is under the control of the evil one. We know also that the Son of God has come and has given us understanding, so that we may know him who is true. And we are in him who is true by being in his Son Jesus Christ. He is the true God and eternal life.
Dear children, keep yourselves from idols."

Love's Flame: Christ in the Song of Songs
Bart Byl on Song of Songs 2:3-13, 8:6-7.
Series: Christ in the Old Testament
At the most obvious level, this poem is a celebration of erotic love between a man and a woman. Their desire is physical and sensual; it is not merely sexual but involves the burning desire of one person for complete union with another. It's a celebration of God's gift of embodied, marital sexuality. And married love at its best points us toward "the flame of the Lord"—the divine Eros that is the love of Christ for his Bride.

Ultimate Meaning: Christ in Ecclesiastes
Bart Byl on Ecclesiastes 1.
Series: Christ in the Old Testament
Someone observed that if you’re depressed you should read Ecclesiastes. You’ll still be depressed, but now you’ll be depressed biblically. The author of Ecclesiastes tears away the pretensions and illusions that shield us from facing the absurdity of life. His one great certainty is that we’re all going to die — this little vapour of life, this wisp of air, is going to dissipate. We Christians are not exempted from experience of futility, frustration, and death — but we are children of the Resurrection.
