About Dawn Harris:
Dawn is a passionate and energetic educator who lives by the motto, “Relationships First.” Her enthusiasm for creating connections is infectious and she thrives on the opportunity to learn about the things that motivate and inspire teachers and students alike.
In her roles as a secondary English Language Arts Educator, Gifted and Talented Teacher, and Associate Professor of Teacher Education, Dawn continually strives to bring authentic and engaging learning experiences to students of all ages.
Throughout her career as an educator, Dawn has taught in urban, rural, and suburban districts meeting the needs of children from a wide range of backgrounds and cultures. In addition to general ELA coursework, Dawn’s classroom teaching experience also includes teaching English as a second language, creative writing, film studies, and response to intervention instruction. Dawn’s professional teaching experiences have been showcased in scholarly journals and at local, regional, national, and international conferences.
Prior to becoming an educator, Dawn spent more than 10 years in marketing and publishing in the private sector. This experience has given Dawn insight into the skills and knowledge students need in order to be prepared to enter into a competitive, global workforce or into college once they leave high school. This insight helps to support Dawn’s work in developing veteran, novice, and pre-service teachers as they seek to educate students for tomorrow’s work today.
As a licensed Curriculum, Instruction, and Professional Development Specialist, Dawn’s primary goal in all things is to support educators with planning learning that ignites curiosity and that engages and inspires students in a way that impacts their growth and achievement every single day.
Dawn’s first book, Plan Like a Pirate, released just days before this episode was published!
Contemplation, Concentration, Communication, & Creativity with Jeffrey Pflaum
In this episode I chat with accomplished educator and author, Jeffery Pflaum. As an inner-city educator with 34 years of experience in the New York City Department of Education, Jeffrey considers himself a “teacher-developer-researcher-experimentalist” in the classroom. He produced many original, innovative, progressive projects in EI, SEL, identity, creativity, imagination, poetry, writing (prose), thinking, reading, concentration, and values clarification. “The Contemplation Music Writing Project” uses music of all kinds, contemplation, reflection, writing, discussion, and self-evaluations to lead young people on peaceful journeys of self-discovery, understanding, motivation, and education. His book, MOTIVATING TEEN AND PRETEEN READERS: HOW TEACHERS AND PARENTS CAN LEAD THE WAY (Rowman & Littlefield Education, 2011), presents my creative techniques for teaching struggling and reluctant readers. THE INNER CITIES POETRY ARTS PROJECT is an anthology that spans over 15 years of his students' free-verse poetry. Educators and researchers alike can access these “internal education” programs at www.independent.academia.edu/PflaumJ. Check out Jeffrey's website, www.JeffreyPflaum.com, to find more articles, posts, projects, and curricula, including the student poetry, to use in classrooms from lower elementary grades through high school.
As an inner-city educator of 34 years years, Jeffrey created original, progressive, and innovative curricula for students and teachers.
One program "The Contemplation Music Writing Project" uses music of all kinds, contemplation, writing (prose/poetry), discussion, and evaluations to develop self and other awareness, creativity, communication skills, sensitivity, resilience, and contemplation to change the classroom into a positive and peaceful learning environment.
This extremely successful project ran for 20 years in one of NYC's most challenging schools/districts. Jeffrey is still in touch with many former students--now in their 40's and 50's--on Facebook.
The contemplation technique expanded into other programs such as "Reflection Writing," where elementary/middle school kids searched their experiences to respond to teacher-created themes related to everyday life as well as academic life.
You can find many of Jeffrey's projects at Academia.edu:
Powerful Learning through Tech with Lindy Hockenbary

She uses these skills to facilitate hands-on trainings for teachers as well as work with edtech companies to ensure products align with the needs of educators.
When the world turned upside down in early 2020, educators came to her for guidance. She compiled her experience and instructional technology knowledge into a full guide to online and digital learning — A Teacher's Guide to Online Learning.
When it comes to educational technology, Lindy's motto is 'use the tool that is right for the job.' Therefore, she tries to be well-rounded in the edtech field and holds several edtech certifications, including Google for Education Certified Trainer and Microsoft Innovative Educator (MIE) Master Trainer.
