Too Stupid to Know I Can't

Too Stupid to Know I Can't

By Roger @ The Drum Shop

"Too stupid to know I can't" is a mantra to my life. I am a firm believer I can accomplish anything as I don't possess the understanding that I can't. So...to me anything is possible; it just boils down to, "...how bad do you want it."

This podcast will cover a great many things...NOT just drums, drumming and the like, but sales knowledge, technical knowledge, cycling, fitness, motivational thoughts, rants, raves and possibly any other thing I can wrap my brain around.

So sit down, lend an ear and let's see where this goes.

Using the Hashtag (pound sign) #askdrumshoptulsa

Welcome to “Too Stupid to Know I Can’t.”  We have a little different type of episode this time.  During our time with Mark Meeker (return visitor and super great friend of the podcast and The Drum Shop), we follow up with the questions submitted by listeners and viewers of our podcast and YouTube Channel by using the #askdrumshoptulsa.

During this episode we discuss 5 of the first 10 questions we’ve received and tried to keep it short – but as Mark and I often do…jocularity and sidebar discussions happen.  We do touch on some drum builder technology and quality of sound as it pertains to a couple of the questions.  Thanks to Josh Allen of INDe Drum Lab and Jon Zoog of Dallas Drum Co. for their fantastic instruments for discussion.

We’d appreciate your input on this episode because we are trying to create a repository of honest answers to perplexing drum questions.  Remember to use #askdrumshoptulsa wherever you are listening to this podcast or following us on social media as we’d like to answer your question on an upcoming podcast.

Thanks so much and don’t forget to like/share this podcast with everyone!!!  We’d also love your review as we can create better podcasts that you will enjoy.

Have a killer day!

The Monkey Interviews Davis Douglas of D'addario.

The Monkey Interviews Davis Douglas of D'addario.

Thank you for joining us on Too Stupid to Know I Can’t.  During this episode we get to chat with Davis Douglas of D’Addario…makers of Evans Drumheads, ProMark Drumsticks, Puresound Wires, Real Feel Practice Pads, American Stage Cables along with a variety of other products for guitars and other instruments.

During this episode, we discuss the ideas, concepts and philosophies of D’Addario with about 90% of their products being made in the United States of America.  Additionally, we discuss some basic technology of drumheads and specifically the UV1.  More importantly, we get to talk about the soon to be released UV2.  Yes folks…that’s right, the long awaited 2-ply version of the UV Heads are coming to the market.  We discuss why and how this head is made along with some basic education regarding snare side heads and the various tuning concepts.  In addition, we also had a chance to talk about the EC Resonant heads which I’ve never played before, but now have me intrigued.

One of the cool things was our discussion of Puresound Wires and the technology that went into the Custom Pro Wires and why.  In case you weren’t aware of the coolness that is the Puresound Custom Pro wires, they implanted a “cotter pin” to release your wires from the throwoff without having to reset the wires.  It makes changing your snare side head super fast and easy, encouraging you to change your head more often which coincidentally is something also talk about.  Meaning the importance of changing resonant heads more often than people believe.

Sit back and enjoy this episode of Too Stupid to Know I Can’t and please remember to like, share and comment on this episode…it really helps us.  Additionally, if you are on social media (FB, Instagram, Twitter or YouTube), please use the pound sign (or hashtag as you young folk say) and “askdrumshoptulsa” whatever you’d like us to address on an upcoming podcast.  Each week we will search the “hashtag” and see what you’re asking to be able to answer it on an upcoming episode.  So, use #askdrumshoptulsa for us to find your question and answer it.

Oh…one more thing.  If you haven’t subscribed yet, please do…we’d really appreciate.  And thank you for joining us on Too Stupid to Know I Can’t.

Mark Squared and The Head Monkey Wrangler...

Mark Squared and The Head Monkey Wrangler...

Welcome to “Too Stupid to Know I Can’t” where we got to hang out with Mark Meeker and Mark Ogg. Mr. Meeker being a long-time local drummer, instructor and all-around good guy with Mark Ogg being a super guy, solid player and also a long-time local drummer made for an interesting evening of conversation.  I had no idea how this podcast was going to go.

What was to be a focused podcast quickly turned into over two and a half hours of jocularity, intense discussion and a lot of laughs.  We talk about our favorite KISS song/album, larger-sized drummers, drumstick technology and more.  This is a much longer episode than we intended…however we think it should be fun enough you won’t notice how long it actually it is.

So, sit back, strap in and enjoy, “Too Stupid to Know I Can’t.”

Hot Damn! Interviewing Jeremy Berman of Q Drum Co.

Hot Damn! Interviewing Jeremy Berman of Q Drum Co.

Welcome to Too Stupid to Know I Can’t and today we interview the incredible Jeremy Berman of Q Drum Co. out of Southern California.  During this episode we speak with Jeremy (currently in Singapore) on tour as the drum tech for Muse.  This is a career Jeremy “fell into” while working at his previous employer and while it may not be a glamorous job for some, it provides Jeremy the ability to work intently with an artist while garnering a laser focus on how his drums work in different locals, temperatures, scenarios and hear them in a variety of context.

We speak about how Q Drum Co. came to be and some of his history in the industry along with some interesting info I didn’t know about.  We touch a little bit on the state of the drum industry or perhaps the music industry as a whole pertaining to musical instruments along with what the future might hold.

Jeremy and I get into the nitty gritty of what make Q Drum Co. Drums so incredible and we learn more of the philosophy behind Q Drum Co.  We talk about some things “on the horizon” for Q Drum Co. along with how our paths crossed in the cycling world early on without knowing it.

We hope you enjoy this episode and will share with your friends who love drums.

Interviewing Pork Pie Percussion Owner, Bill Detamore

Interviewing Pork Pie Percussion Owner, Bill Detamore

Hello and welcome to another episode of Too Stupid to Know I Can’t.  I’m Roger, owner of The Drum Shop in Tulsa, OK. and your host.  This is a special episode of Too Stupid because we get to spend some killer time and conversation with the legendary Bill Detamore of Pork Pie Percussion.  I’ve known Bill for some time and have been an admirer of his work for years only to be fortunate enough to carry his drums in our shop here in Tulsa.

Bill has been working on, refinishing and making drums for over 40 years and has worked with some of the greats including the legendary Jeff Porcarro of Toto.  I ask some “internet myth” questions regarding Pork Pie Percussion to allow him to set the record straight while at the same time delved into some of his drum philosophies while comparing them to my own.

In addition, we speak about the revitalization of Rogers Drums that Bill has been a key player and what that all means to the drumming community.

Finally, we touch on the China/Taiwan scenario that is truly a tenuous situation with many slippery slopes. Costs of manufacturing are on the rise overseas including government mandated minimum wages and benefits for these hardworking employees that are the true unsung heroes of many products we use every day.

So sit back and enjoy our time with Bill Detamore of Pork Pie Percussion – we hope you enjoy this episode of Too Stupid to Know I Can’t as much as I did speaking with a longtime friend.

To Port or Not to Port and The Breck Epic

To Port or Not to Port and The Breck Epic

Thank you for joining this episode of Too Stupid to Know I Can’t where Dalton and I discuss whether to port or not to port the resonant kick drumhead as well as the upcoming Breck Epic Mountain Bike Race I am participating in along with the new Orbea OiZ Team Bike in conjunction with BaseCamp Cyclery in Denver, CO. We open this episode with a quick discussion on etiquette and having respect for others in public places. I am unsure what prompted opening the podcast this way – but it seemed to work. Moving into Porting or Not Porting the resonant kick drumhead arbitrarily we talk about some pending issues with doing so.  The catch is drum technology is advancing at a fairly good pace where we are learning more and more daily.  However, drummers today will arbitrarily cut a hole in their kick drum without even listening to it in a variety of settings…all because a soundman in the late 60’s or early 70’s convinced a drummer to do so making it more convenient for him to put a microphone inside of the kick drum versus removing the head entirely as they had in the past. Either way you slice it, boxers or briefs…the choice is yours, but do yourself a favor and listen to your kick drum in a variety of settings and situations PRIOR to arbitrarily putting a hole in the resonant drumhead.  You might be surprised by what you hear. Moving away from drums, Dalton and I begin to discuss some “history” of off-road tire technology, the adoption of belt -buckles for prizes in mountain bike races, the Breck Epic and the new Orbea OiZ rolling on Crank Brothers NEW Synthesis Wheels and Continental Tires.  In a few words – HOLY %%%&#T!!  This bike is fast and the tires are completely backwards from my original thinking and have completely proven me wrong. Along the way, we discuss a little bit about rear-suspension technology (from my recollection and probably NOT current understanding) and the evolution of tire tech starting way back with the Tioga Tires Farmer John.  This in my opinion was a tire that started the revolution in tire technology and birthed the Panaracer Smoke and subsequent myriad of tires from ALL of the tire companies.  As progress and technology increases, front and rear specific tires become the norm and a better understanding of wheel technology comes to life. The Orbea OiZ is one of the best bikes I have ever ridden and thankfully didn’t take too long to get used to (although running the Continental Trail and Cross King opposite to what I’m used to was odd at first) because that bike rides like a cat on a hot tin roof.  Fast, smooth and predictable as if it is on rails. With a special shout out to Harley of BaseCamp Cyclery and Justin Holie of E3 Fitness for their fantastic podcast called, No Ride Around being the inspiration for this podcast and founding members of The Breck Epic Race Team.  If you haven’t checked out their podcast, you should and here’s the link: https://anchor.fm/s/857e380/podcast/rss I would like to give special thanks to the sponsors who are personally helping me with The Breck Epic along with those helping “the team” as a whole…the hashtags are below. If you’ve enjoyed this podcast, please do me a favor to like, follow, share, comment and review this podcast on whatever platform you are listening.  It means a great deal to us that we get to have the luxury to talk about things we love and share it with others.   Thank you so much and have a great day. #OrbeaBicycles, #SRAMRacing, #CrankBrothers, #ContinentalTires, #BaseCampCyclery, #BicycylesofTulsa, #E3Fitness, #drumshoptulsa, #noridearound, #ColorUpTherapeutics, #JakrooClothing, #TeRukiTraining, #RRFF, #NixonCoffee, #SimbolPR, #SimbolMarketing, #HammerNutrition, #DigitSole, #LazerHelmets, #LakeShoes, #TimePedals, #CaféBustelo, #OldSchoolBagel and #DynamicAudio

Decluttering life and a quick examination of expectations.

Decluttering life and a quick examination of expectations.

Thank you for joining us on “Too Stupid to Know That I Can’t.” We conclude episode 2 where Dalton and I were discussing George Clooney’s Batman Film being a bad film overall along with the Silver Rush 50 Mountain Bike Race in Leadville, CO, riding bicycles and how simple life can be.
During this podcast we talk about riding mountain bikes at night on Turkey Mountain in the cold, Oskaar from Iceland and “lightening the load of life.” Meaning getting rid of aspects, things or possessions that burden our life without our knowledge. All the while Dalton enjoying the “unknown history” of an object while “antiquing.”
“Decluttering” your life and the person spearheading the movement along with “sparking joy” in our lives along with how we are living life through our mobile devices. Even…perhaps confined to our mobile device versus living our life in real time. Are we burdened or confined to our devices to make our life simpler?
We also touch on the availability of “customer service” on the internet 24 hours a day and as a “mom and pop” retailer the challenge to compete. And the question about becoming a billion dollar retailer is one that is daunting at best and the sacrifices it would take.
We continue talking about drum gear and meeting the needs, expectations of our clients while guiding a drummer to the best gear for their dollar. In particular we speak about Dalton’s purchase of the DW UltraLight Hardware Pack with matching bag and how much easier his load in and out is as a result of that purchase.

Marvel End Game and More

Marvel End Game and More

This is part 1 of a 2-part episode of Too Stupid to Know I Can't.

In this episode, Dalton and I were chatting about Marvel Avengers End Game, Game of Thrones (which I know nothing about), grammar "police," Apple Siri's voices/personalities, LetterKinney, Black Pages, learning about other people and NOT their "social media" lives, getting to know Dalton, kickboxing/competitive fighting, cycling, Dalton being a Nurse, being better at anything, the movie "Snakes on a Train" and more.

We hope you enjoy this 1st part of Episode 2.  However, part 2, Episode 2 is coming up next.  Stay tuned.

Why can't they make that pedal?

Why can't they make that pedal?

Welcome to Too Stupid to Know That I Can't.  The conversation was inspired by a social media thread discussing a kick drum pedal featuring USB or wireless charging of your devices.  Granted it was an April Fool's Joke, but why can't this be done?  Dalton makes a great point that we landed men on the moon and asked, "...why can't this pedal be made?"

We traverse several topics and circles back around to the main theme.  So sit back, relax or do whatever you normally do while listening to podcasts and enjoy.

Thank you for listening and we hope you share this with your friends, family and enemies...should be a fun time.
