How Can ChatGPT Help Translators
Today we would like to talk about something very trendy: AI tools. More specifically, ChatGPT. The world has been taken by storm by this innovation, and, while there's always a lot of doom and gloom about technology replacing translators and interpreters whenever something new appears in the horizon, it's crucial that we, language professionals, face innovations with a clear mind and optimistic attitude. After all, instead of resisting technological advancements, we should find ways to use new tools to our advantage and make our work easier.
This episode will address the following topics:
What is ChatGPT?
How can it help translators and interpreters?
How does it compare to machine translation solutions?
And, will ChatGPT replace human translators and interpreters?

The Acquisition of Language Companies
The acquisition of small businesses owned by language professionals is a trend that has been growing in recent years. Language professionals such as translators, interpreters, subtitlers, and language consultants are often the sole providers of services related to language knowledge, and as such, their businesses are highly specialized and unique. But, what happens then for a language talent who sells their small business? Would they become an employee of their former company after such an acquisition? Could they retire comfortably? In this episode, we pose these and many other questions about this recent trend.

Season 4 is coming up!
Are you ready for Season 4 of the Translation Confessional podcast?
We hope you are, because we have a couple of new things coming up this year.
First of all, we're changing our schedule to release new episodes every other Wednesday. We are also releasing the transcription of each episode on Kindle Vella, which as of now is only available for Amazon US users. That should hold you over before the actual book version comes out.
Oops! Did I say that aloud?
Apart from that, we are also working on the Brazilian version of our podcast! The title translates to "little corner for translators," but I'll let our hosts introduce themselves right now:
Olá! Meu nome é Ana. E eu sou o Marco. Somos a voz do Cantinho para tradutores.
Well, if you speak Portuguese, you can catch the Brazilian episodes every other Wednesday when the Translation Confessional episodes in English are taking the week off.
We can't wait to hear from you about the upcoming topics we'll be bringing up for discussion. Feel free to send us voice messages or emails using the links on this episode's description.
For now, our podcast team would like to wish you a very happy new year, full of interesting projects!

What is Internationalization?
Today we would like to talk about internationalization. Do you know what it is? Considering the name alone, you would think it is all about making something become "international," right? Well, yes, and no.
In previous episodes, our podcast host Rafa Lombardino talked about "domestication" and "foreignization" in literary translations. We also featured an episode about localization and transcreation. Make sure to check this episode's description for links to these past episodes.
However, there is more at play when it comes to internationalization. It's closely related to information technology, actually. In order to dig deeper into this subject, we're featuring yet another article by George Kasiouras, with Transifex. George’s article is great to help both translators and translation clients understand what internationalization means.
And, because we've adapted the original article to fit this format, you can read George's original blog entry here.

How to Name Your Company
If you are a language professional working for yourself, you should really consider establishing your own business. Not only will it help you organize your resources and finances but it will also protect your personal assets and may simplify the way you file your taxes.
In most cases, clients may view you differently, especially if they are yet to see freelancers as experts, who add value to their products and services, and have a long-established career in a given field.
In other words, speaking on behalf of your own business, even if it's a company of one, can open many doors and show potential clients that you are dedicated to using your skills and providing language services in the long run, as opposed to working sporadically in your field, doing side jobs.
However, in order to command such respect from potential clients, and project an image of business continuity, you must select a strong name that will make clients remember you for what you do, so they feel comfortable coming back to you again and again whenever they have a language need, thus creating a solid business relationship with you.
Today, we will talk about how to avoid frequent mistakes people make when selecting a name for their business. We're featuring an article written by Grant Polachek, who is the head of branding for Squadhelp.com, a startup that has become a crowdsource naming platform by reviewing and curating the best available names on the web today.

Translation and Politics
Today we'll talk about a very important topic: politics in translation.
Rafa sat down with Nicolás Arízaga, English and Spanish translator and interpreter at Pole Translations. He explained the crucial role of language professionals who assist politicians, campaigns, and political parties who wish to connect with an audience that speaks a foreign language.
When it comes to working in politics, translators go beyond translating. We act as language advisors and transcreators to help craft a message to a completely different demographics than that of the original message in the source language. Considering that, the role of translators and interpreters in political campaigns and time in office is crucial to connect, bridge, and influence bilingual and non-native-speaking constituents in their own language.
And, if you'll be attending the American Translators Association conference in Los Angeles this year, be sure to check his session: “Political Translation: Speech Writing, Storytelling, and Discourse Analysis”. His session will explore transcreation strategies that take into consideration the sociopolitical, intercultural, and ideological biases present in the target language's audience.

[Spotify video] What are Certified Translations All About?
Last episode, we talked about the process of becoming a sworn translator in Brazil and Guatemala, and compared it to the concept of certified translations, since the role of a sworn translator does not exist in the United States. Considering that, this seems to be a good opportunity to go into more detail about what it means to certify a translation, go over a few misconceptions, and share some tips on how to provide a good service to direct clients who have a very concrete need for translation services.

[audio only] What Are Sworn Translations All About?
Today we'll be addressing a very interesting topic: Sworn translations. In order to shed some light on the subject, Rafa talked to two of her peers to bring us more information on sworn translations in two specific countries: Brazil and Guatemala. Candice Soldatelli is a sworn translator from Brazil, and she'll explain what the process is like when translators take a very specific exam organized by the company registry office in their respective state. Ilduara Escobedo is a sworn translator from Guatemala, and she'll talk about the steps translators need to follow when taking the exam organized by the Guatemalan Department of Education. As for Rafa, she'll share her own experiences as an ATA-certified translator, since there isn't a specific process to swear in translators in the United States.

QUICK TIP: Getting Centered After Lockdown
I was so organized pre-pandemic. I had the best of both worlds: work and family life. After the lockdown began, I lost my way.
Because I work for myself, I went into business survivor mode. After all, where else would I go besides my home office? The gym was closed. There were no more afternoon escapes for lunch and a movie.
There was this uncertainty in the air: Will clients disappear? When will the next project come in? We didn't know how long the pandemic would last and the "new normal" seemed to have come to stay.
Then I took two weeks off this spring break to enjoy a much-needed vacation, and that's when I realized: I cannot go back to that crazy routine anymore. I need to find that balance I had before. But how could I break all the bad habits that became the norm after early 2020?
Well, it turns out I just needed a little push. And, believe me, I thought it wasn't going to work. But after doing this for a while now and creating a new routine, I feel much more in control. I feel CENTERED.
So, if you're having problems as a freelancer trying to go back to being productive and organized AND having a life, or if you never got to enjoy that feeling of being on top of things pre-pandemic, there's actually a place you can go, without leaving your home office, where you can find structure in a very intuitive and pleasant way.
We can all meet there and focus together, but apart. Distant, but connected. It's a place where you can sit down, get to work, take breaks, and when you're done with your projects and tasks you get to walk away…
Check out this page to find out what worked for me and may work for you, too. Come get CENTERED with me and kick the pandemic funk off your freelancing life.
[Spotify VIDEO] Machine Translation: To MT or Not to MT?
Today we would like to get into a controversial subject: Machine Translation.
We are all very familiar with the doom and gloom associated with the use of technology when it comes to language services. Many people who don't understand how language technology works mistakenly think that software, apps, or even robots will soon replace translators in the near future.
Considering that, we came across an interesting article that highlights the positive aspects of this technology by arguing how neural machine translation, or NMT, isn't our enemy. We reached out to the author, Joachim Lépine, a French-to-English translator based in Quebec, and asked for his authorization to bring his article to Translation Confessional. Joachim not only authorized us to bring you his article, but he also sat down with Rafa to talk about his approach to MTs when he works on his own translation projects, and how he helps his translation students interact with MT as well.
Here's a link to his original article: https://tinyurl.com/NMT-joachim. For more information on Joachim's background and training programs, visit his website.

[audio only] Cultural Intelligence
Let's talk about Cultural Intelligence and explore how language is part of a bigger picture when it comes to interacting with people from a different background. Yes, it's important to communicate well when speaking your own language or the language of others. However, effective communication isn't about language skills alone. Cultural aspects also come into play when expressing yourself and understanding the people you are talking to.
To introduce this fascinating topic, we'll read an article titled "Brazilian Emotional Intelligence: Affection, Language and the Intricacies of Belonging," written by Adrienne Sweetwater and Mariana Barros, partners at a company called Differänce, which offers intercultural consulting services to companies and expatriates who must not only cross geographical borders, but bridge gaps between different cultures as well.

Code of Ethics for Language Professionals
Let's hear from Holly Silvestri and Loana Denis, founding members of the American Association of Interpreters and Translators in Education (AAITE), a non-profit professional organization that promotes advocacy, education, and professionalization for language professionals who work in educational settings.
In this interview, they discuss how important it is to raise awareness about the role of interpreters and translators who ensure language access to those students and families in the U.S. school system who have English as a second language. Most importantly, they talk about the creation of a Code of Ethics to guide professionals in this particular field, which is also closely related to the community, health, privacy, and legal fields.
We hope you enjoy this illuminating conversation and reach out to Holly, Loana, or the AAITE if you would like to learn more about translation and interpretation in the education segment.

RECOMMENDATION: "TranslatorsPod101" by William Cassemiro
Here’s a quick message to recommend yet another translation podcast to you. It’s called “TranslatorsPod101” and it’s hosted by “Translators101,” a learning platform for Portuguese-speaking language professionals that is pretty much a Netflix for translators! Both the podcast and the learning platform were created by William Cassemiro, former president of the Brazilian Association of Translators (ABRATES) and, I’m happy to say, also a dear friend of mine.
If you speak Portuguese, I couldn’t recommend it more. You can listen to the interviews available on the podcast and sign up as a member of the platform to enjoy not only live events, but also all the on-demand recordings available on a variety of topics, from general subjects about translation, interpretation, and everything related to languages and freelancing, all the way to very specific webinars on translating video games and board games, organizing your finances, solving some pesky vocabulary issues, and making your translations sound natural. Well, listen in as William tells you more about it in our native language, Portuguese.
So, that’s today's podcast recommendation: “TranslatorsPod101.” Check out both the podcast and the learning platform in Portuguese, because I bet that listening to all the interviewees and presenters will open up your mind to sides of our language work you may have never thought about.
[audio only] Controversy in Audiovisual Translation: Narcos
We’re back with yet another conversation that I was eager to share with you. Today I’m talking with Ana Osorio, who was born in Venezuela to a Colombian family. She was a little girl living in Medellin during the Pablo Escobar era. Because of that, she’s very familiar with the "Paisa" dialect.
While pursuing an Advanced Master’s Degree in Translation and Interpreting studies at Macquarie University in Australia, the topic of her thesis was, you guessed it, the Narcos series that premiered on Netflix in 2015 and focused on Escobar’s ascent and descent in the late 1970s through the early 1990s. So Ana and I sat down to talk about what she researched while writing her thesis and what her impressions were about the first two seasons of Narcos. And considering the topic of our conversation, this episode is marked as explicit for strong language, so your discretion is advised.

NEWSFLASH: Book Translation Sample ― "Apague a luz se for chorar"
Today I wanted to share with you a conversation I had with Fabiane Guimarães, a Brazilian author with whom I worked on the translation sample of her debut novel, "Apague a luz se for chorar," which literally invites readers to turn off the lights if they're about to cry.
Find the book in Portuguese here:
https://tinyurl.com/apaguealuz
We talked about our collaboration and some choices we've made while putting the sample together, which include the need to internationalize her book to keep it's authentic "Brazilianness," since the story is set in the Midwest of Brazil. We also talked about some equivalents we've found for certain terms, so as not to jolt readers of English out of the story and, mainly, how we came up with a suggest title in English that could be as enigmatic and impactful as the original.
As an avid reader, Fabiane also recommended some books she enjoyed reading and talked about the style and themes other authors have explored and how they compare with her own writing style as an author.
You can watch my conversation with Fabiane with subtitles in English. And, while we keep our fingers crossed for a translation contract to be signed soon, so that her book can be made available to readers of English, I'd also like to recommend a brief reading she had with excerpts of her book, which also includes subtitles in English: https://tinyurl.com/fabiane-leitura
I hope you soon have a chance to read "Apague a luz se for chorar" in English, so you can let me know if you indeed cried by the end of the book and whether you had to turn off the lights in order to do so.
[Spotify VIDEO] Case Study: The Dubbed Version of Deadpool
I was really looking forward to the upcoming episodes of Translation Confessional because I have a few conversations that I'm eager to share with you. Today we'll have Part 2 of an interview with Damián Santilli, audiovisual translator and translation instructor from Argentina. If you haven't listened to Part 1 yet, check it out for an animated conversation on neutral Spanish in audiovisual translations, regional expressions, accents in Spanish-speaking content, and preparing the new generation for shifts in audiovisual translation demands.
Now, to wrap up our conversation, you'll hear us talking about his thesis on the dubbed version of the movie "Deadpool" into Spanish, as it was shown in Latin America. We'll go through some specific examples from his detailed case study and, as expected, expletives abound. While we wait for his thesis to get published, visit Damián's website for more information on his work.

RECOMMENDATION: "Troublesome Terps"
Here’s a quick message to recommend yet another translation podcast to you. It’s called “Troublesome Terps” and, if you’re an interpreter, odds are you’re already very familiar with the show and its four hosts: Sarah Hickey, Jonathan Downie, and the Alexanders―Alexander Gansmeier and Alexander Drechsel. But they don’t talk about interpretation only―they cover several topics and have very animated talks and interviews.
Check out this fun podcast about the many subjects that keep us, language professionals, up at night.
