Mistakes Musicians Make Part 1: Falling Behind
“But I’ll fall behind!”
The music business is fast-paced and highly demanding, but it also takes a significant amount of time to become established as a professional. So what does taking time off for self-care mean for our long-term success?
Join us as we delve into the mindset of “falling behind” in the industry, and the ways in which it is detrimental (and unrealistic) in the face of long-term success.

"A brace won't fix it"
“No one is coming to save you.”
How much do you know about YOUR body and movement mechanics? How much do you rely on a single person to know these things for you?
In this episode, we unpack the tendency of relying excessively on a single expert to tell you about your own body, and why it’s important to know yourself and communicate with your practitioners. Because a brace won’t fix it!!

Lack Mindset Can Lead to Injury
What? How is that possible? The correlation is there.
As you can see from the clip with Veronika Klirova in the beginning, it's not as far fetched as it sounds.
Changing the mindset around lack to abundance is the first step in avoiding injury.
*Instead of "there will never be enough jobs" change to "there is unlimited job potential with so many careers in music that haven't been created! What/how can I contribute?"
* Instead of "musician's are broke, you'll always be poor" change to "I'm a highly skilled professional and I charge for my ability, talent and years of work. I do not work for free".
*Instead of "I have to say yes to every gig and push through pain created from overuse, because if I say no, I won't get called again" shift your mindset to "I say yes to the gigs that fulfill me and no to the ones that don't, and saying no shows I'm in demand".
We talk about this and other mindset shifts in first part of Music Strong's pilot program: Job Security for Musicians. If you're ready to live in abundance, prevent and overcome playing related injury in yourself and others and learn how to increase your strength and endurance, get the details here and join us! https://musicstrong.com/job-security-for-musicians/ Beta program is only going on for a few more weeks so get in before we go full price!

Setting Boundaries
Boundaries....popular as a topic to talk about, but how popular is it when we actively put those boundaries into place and start enforcing them?
There's quite a bit of vulnerability here as well. You may remember when co-host Jen Kabbas did her solo podcast on reclaiming failure, well I had some things on my mind that just had to get out and I thought they would be valuable to share with you.
They say that when you hit 40 years old you start to care less about what people think. That is somewhat true, but as any of us musicians who love being good students and people pleasers know, it's a hard thing sometimes to break out of the mindset and learning, not just learning to say NO, but learning when to say no.
This episode brought to you by Music Strong's pilot program: Job Security for Musicians. Eating Disorders - Finding the Fullness
Whew...this can be a touchy subject among any group, musicians or not, and in this episode of the Tuned and Strong podcast we get raw and real about our own different experiences with it.
Many times, eating disorders can find their roots in emotional trauma. Angela's experience with binge eating disorder boiled down to feeling trapped in her circumstances - Both Jen and Angela can relate their circumstances to feeling a lack of control and a lack of structure. These things can manifest as eating disorders because we are seeking to either find control through controlling weight or that lack of control can manifest as a binge. We also cover how we got out of it: being present, giving yourself permission and sitting with reality, among other things.

The Self-Employed Musician with Ashley Hagadorn
Successful music studio business owner, violist, strongman competitor and recent mom, Ashley Hagadon joins us for a conversation you can lump under "things I didn't learn in music school but should have". We cover how to go from traveling teacher to owning your own studio, taxes, marketing/branding, logo design (remember this: people don't read!), contracts, getting paid and how to put more responsibility on your students/clients so you aren't doing EVERYTHING.
Also covered - get a CPA!
We also delve into how to she went from cardio bunny to Crossfit to finding her way into loving Strongman lifts and more importantly, how it has helped her as a musician!
Takeaways:
• get a CPA (they aren't as expensive as you think)
• Keep logo simple and marketing pretty- people look at pictures, they don't read
• Lifting for strength and lifting for size are completely different - if you want to get strong you won't automatically look like a bodybuilder.

Fitness for the Non-Athletic Musician
Do you have to be an "athlete" to benefit from fitness training as a musician? After we got the comment "I love this new community of musicians who are talking about the physical aspects of playing, but I admit I get discouraged because so many stories are of people who already enjoyed a level of physical activity and just needed to learn how to channel it into staying conditioned for their instrument...I struggle just to want to move my body at all." That hit home, so we address that topic fully as well as being fit vs. looking fit.

1) feeling overwhelmed
2) sifting through the noise online to find what's valuable
3) accepting your emotions when you're stuck at home, and addressing the guilt going on online
4) what to look for in a home workout - what's appropriate for a musician
5) what to look for in a coach
6) as a coach - dealing with our emotions of feeling pressured to put out content because we have a "captive audience"
and sooooo much more...we know you can relate, because we're all going through this together.
