In this final episode of season one, Tyler reflects over this past incredible year by giving his top five takeaways from season one! Welcome to Have a Blessed Gay, your weekly spiritual-comedy podcast! Join holy host, Tyler Martin, as he critically discusses social norms, current events, mental health, religion, and spirituality from an outcast's perspective.

In this episode, Tyler gets meta AF and deconstructs deconstruction. If you’re new to the concept, deconstruction is the method of taking something apart, analyzing, and questioning it. It is a core theme of this podcast, but something Tyler doesn't typically explicitly talk about.

Using his essays from the book “The Deconstructionist Playbook,” he examines the choice of religion and faith, our inner voices, abandonment, and the options we have after deconstruction. Join Tyler in deconstructing deconstruction! And if you want to enter for a chance to win a free signed copy of the book, the details to enter are below:

Welcome to Have a Blessed Gay, your weekly spiritual-comedy podcast! Join holy host, Tyler Martin, as he critically discusses social norms, current events, mental health, religion, and spirituality from an outcast's perspective.

In this episode, Tyler talks with the inspiring Rachel Myers! Rachel, along with her husband Derek, began a little Instagram page called Your Favorite Heretics -- it was something that began for their family and friends -- a place for them to share their deconstruction journey, but when one post went viral, things shifted a bit! They now have over 40 thousand followers and have cultivated a beautiful, safe community for people deconstructing and recovering from church trauma. They aim to create content that gives language to people's experience and help them along in their healing. An inclusive community for all types of people dealing with the messy undoing of toxic theology, they are welcome to all.

Tyler and Rachel discuss trauma bonding, navigating relationships as one deconstructs their faith, her journey toward coming out as a-sexual, evangelicalism, and finding divinity within others!

Welcome to Have a Blessed Gay, your weekly spiritual-comedy podcast! Join holy host, Tyler Martin, as he critically discusses social norms, current events, mental health, religion, and spirituality from an outcast's perspective. In this week’s episode, Tyler is taking a deep dive into the history of the Catholic Church and it’s relationship with homosexuality. Because the history is so intricate, this shall be a two part episode. In this first part, Tyler examines Pope Francis’ personal theology surrounding homosexuality and marriage equality, and the recent decree regarding civil unions issued by the Vatican. Then, to help us have a better understanding of their reasoning, Tyler takes us back in history to the beginning of the church, looking at the Catholic Church’s history with society, government, marriage, economics, and sexual morality. The Catholic Church is the world's oldest and largest continuously functioning international institution, an institution that has majorly shaped our modern society. In order to combat the things that are unjust, we have to learn the history and how we might be indirectly or directly supporting an abusive system. Let’s deconstruct and learn together!

Ep. 30 Evolved Spirituality: Gender, Sexual, Spiritual Fluidity

Ep. 30 Evolved Spirituality: Gender, Sexual, Spiritual Fluidity

Welcome to Have a Blessed Gay, your weekly spiritual-comedy podcast! Join holy host, Tyler Martin, as he critically discusses social norms, current events, mental health, religion, and spirituality from an outcast's perspective. In this episode, Tyler examines gender and sexual fluidity, showing how we can use that same concept of fluidity toward our spirituality. What would fluid spirituality be like? Spirituality that is in motion, that is ever changing, ever growing, and expanding. Spirituality that embraces different paths, different teachers, different walks of faith. A spiritual person that does not simply blindly do as they are told, but a person that actively seeks a spiritual connection. Remember, spirituality is a relationship, and relationships are naturally fluid, always evolving, they are never stagnant.

At the beginning of this year, it is a good time to look at what new practices we might want to try and explore. What are ways we can enhance and evolve our spirituality in 2021?

Ep. 29 Buddhist Monk and Global Makeup Artist: Kodo Nishimura

Ep. 29 Buddhist Monk and Global Makeup Artist: Kodo Nishimura

Welcome to Have a Blessed Gay, your weekly spiritual-comedy podcast! Join holy host, Tyler Martin, as he critically discusses social norms, current events, mental health, religion, and spirituality from an outcast's perspective. In this episode, Tyler talks with Kodo Nishimura! Kodo is a global makeup artist and a certified Buddhist monk. He grew up in Tokyo, in a Buddhist temple. As a child, he practiced Japanese flower arrangement for eight years. And at the age of 18, he moved to the US, graduated from Parsons The New School for Design in NY, then in 2015, he switched gears, and decided to complete his two-year Buddhist monk training in Tokyo. After becoming a monk, in 2017, he sought to further his makeup training by enrolling at Makeup Designory in LA.

His story as a makeup artist and a monk has been featured globally including BBC Radio, Vogue, The New York Style Magazine, Buzzfeed, and so on. As a celebrity makeup artist, his makeup work has appeared in national shows such as Miss Universe, Miss USA, The View, and major magazines like Esquire, US Weekly, and the cover of Life & Style. He recently gave a TEDx Talk which I highly recommend you watch (see link below). But where I originally saw him was on "QUEER EYE: We’re in Japan” on NETFLIX in 2019. He was brought on the show to give encouragement and words of wisdom, which he is full of. His mission is to empower all people of all gender using makeup skills with a hint of Buddhism. Kodo breaks down what Buddhism is, comparing it to Disney, he then tells his journey of becoming a monk, and how he uses makeup and Buddhist teachings to encourage people to live openly and proudly. Also, his voice is so soothing, so for all you ASMR fans, this is gonna be a favorite episode. Get ready for some tingles and an amazing discussion!

Ep. 28 Who Really Stole Christmas?

Welcome to Have a Blessed Gay, your weekly spiritual-comedy podcast! Join holy host, Tyler Martin, as he critically discusses social norms, current events, mental health, religion, and spirituality from an outcast's perspective. Christmas is a holiday celebrated by people, Christian and not, around the world. But Jesus’ birthday hasn’t always been the big bash it is today. This week, Tyler dives into why there are so many holidays from different cultures, traditions, and religions during the same time of the year. After all, what is so special about December? Well, welcome to the stage, the incomparable, the legendary, the timeless Winter Solstice. Yaaasss! Winter Solstice came to slay and turn the party. And it has been serving it since the beginning of humanity. Tyler takes a deep look at Winter Solstice festivities, Zoroastrianism (the first and oldest monotheistic religion), and history to find out who really stole Christmas. So, come on, you ho, ho, hoes, and let’s get to the whole whole whole story!

Ep. 27 Inclusion in Prayer, Rituals, and Tradition with Rabbi Denise L. Eger

Ep. 27 Inclusion in Prayer, Rituals, and Tradition with Rabbi Denise L. Eger

Welcome to Have a Blessed Gay, your weekly spiritual-comedy podcast! Join holy host, Tyler Martin, as he critically discusses social norms, current events, mental health, religion, and spirituality from an outcast's perspective. This week, Tyler chats Rabbi Denise L. Eger, an incredible activist, author, proud lesbian, and inspiring Rabbi. Throughout her rabbinical career, she has worked extensively to include and uplift the LGBTQ+ community, she has worked tirelessly with and for people with AIDS, she was the first openly LGBTQ+ President of the Central Conference of American Rabbis which is the largest organization of Rabbis in the world, she’s also the past President of the Southern California Board of Rabbis (being the first woman and openly gay person to do that), and a past President of the Pacific Association of Reform Rabbis. But get this, she officiated the very first US same-sex marriage in L.A. County in 2008. What they primarily discussed was her groundbreaking new book: Mishkan Ga'avah: Where Pride Dwells: A Celebration of LGBTQ Jewish Life and Ritual. It is an absolutely gorgeous book filled with prayers, rituals, history, and traditions that actually include the LGBTQ+ community. There is no other religious denomination that has published a book of queer prayers as part of its primary liturgy. Along with her book, they also talk about inclusivity, tolerance vs. acceptance, seeking activism as a faith leader, and how to make our holidays more inclusive, right now, but also year round. Enjoy this inspiring discussion!

Ep. 26 The Gospel of Eve with Rachel Mann

Welcome to Have a Blessed Gay, your weekly spiritual-comedy podcast! Join holy host, Tyler Martin, as he critically discusses social norms, current events, mental health, religion, and spirituality from an outcast's perspective. This week, Tyler chats with Rachel Mann, a priest, poet, writer and broadcaster based in Manchester, UK. Author of 11 books, her writing has been shortlisted in the international Michael Ramsey Prize for theology, and highly commended in the Forward Poetry Prizes. Her bestselling memoir of growing up trans, ‘Dazzling Darkness’ has just come out in a second edition, and her newest book, The Gospel of Eve, is published in hardback, kindle and audiobook and available wherever books are sold. So, definitely check it out! It was such a blast talking with Rachel and we got into a ton of topics, including the idea of rebelling within religion, what a “calling” is, and the actual real-life Gospel of Eve. Yes, there was an actual Gospel called the Gospel of Eve that was considered for the New Testament when it was being constructed...and you shall find out in this conversation why it was most likely not included.

Ep. 24 Your Church or Your Child: FreedHearts with Susan Cottrell

Ep. 24 Your Church or Your Child: FreedHearts with Susan Cottrell

Welcome to Have a Blessed Gay, your weekly spiritual-comedy podcast! Join holy host, Tyler Martin, as he critically discusses social norms, current events, mental health, religion, and spirituality from an outcast's perspective. In this touching episode, Tyler talks with Susan Cottrell, an international speaker, who you might know from her amazing TEDx Talk that went viral in 2019. Named “Our favorite affirming matriarch” by the Advocate, she is a prominent voice for the LGBTQ+ community. She has been featured on ABC’s 20/20, Nightline, and Good Morning America. She is a public theologian, and through her nonprofit organization, FreedHearts, Susan champions the LGBTQ+ community and families with her authentic love; and she challenges Christians to love as the foundation of faith. She spent 20+ years in the non affirming Evangelical church, has a Master of Arts in Theological Studies, and served as the Vice-President of PFLAG Austin. But she didn’t stop there -- she has written several books, and her newest endeavor is a wonderful podcast called FreedHearts, which is available on all podcast platforms. It is about changing the human conversation on love and inclusion, so if you enjoy her on here, definitely check out her and her hubby Rob on their new podcast.

This episode also features an excerpt from the new extremely special article for The B Word read by the incredible author herself, actor, professor, and writer Dr. Paige Martin Reynolds. The article, called “Our Sensory Sanctuary,” revolves around the importance of having a space for everyone, including people with certain sensory needs. Paige tells the journey of creating a space for her child who has autism at their church (a sensory room). A very poignant, much needed conversation surrounding inclusion. The entire article is also now available on the Have a Blessed Gay website haveablessedgay.com/thebword. Read it and subscribe to the newsletter to know when new articles drop!

Ep. 23 Creation Myths and Stories Part 1 (Jewish, Christian, Hindu, and Babylonian)

Ep. 23 Creation Myths and Stories Part 1 (Jewish, Christian, Hindu, and Babylonian)

Welcome to Have a Blessed Gay, your weekly spiritual-comedy podcast! Join holy host, Tyler Martin, as he critically discusses social norms, current events, mental health, religion, and spirituality from an outcast's perspective. In this fun episode, Tyler examines three creation myths and stories. Some cultures and religions truly believe creation stories as factual accounts of how our universe was created, totally disregarding science. Some people try to marry their creation story with science. Then, of course, there are others who see these as just myths and fantastical stories. But, however you view them, these stories tell a lot about humanity, and we can learn a great deal about society through the mythology...and they're also just cool stories. Tyler dives into the Hindu creation story, the Ancient Babylonian creation story, and the Jewish and/or Christian creation stories...which by the way, did you know there are two contradicting creation stories in the Hebrew and Christian Bible? We’re gonna get into that! So, get ready for some fascinating stories and some new sketch comedy!

This episode also features a new article for The B Word, the new vertical on the Have a Blessed Gay website for outcasts to share their journeys, ideas, questions, and resources, all to do with religion and spirituality. Toward the end of this episode, you’ll hear an excerpt from Working Toward Liberation by Kent Thomas revolving around Young Life, the collision of activism and white supremacy culture, and the hashtag that created a movement: #DoBetterYoungLife. The full article is now available on haveablessedgay.com/thebword. Read it and subscribe to the newsletter to know when new articles drop!

Ep. 22 Religious Trauma Surrounding Sexuality: with Casey Tanner

Welcome to Have a Blessed Gay, your weekly spiritual-comedy podcast! Join holy host, Tyler Martin, as he critically discusses social norms, current events, mental health, religion, and spirituality from an outcast's perspective. In this episode, Tyler talks with Casey Tanner! Casey is a queer-identified, intersectional sex and relationship therapist who combines evidence-based support with tenderness and levity to create spaces in which people feel seen and understood. Specializing in gender and sexual diversity, Casey partners with individuals, relationships and institutions to expand possibilities for connection & pleasure.

So many of us, whether we were raised in a religious household or not, have experienced some type of religious sexual trauma, because our society has adopted a ton of religious fear, shame, and guilt surrounding sex. Tyler and Casey discuss types of religious trauma including purity culture, sex education, stereotyping gender roles, perfectionism, using biblical or sacred texts to condemn people, and demanding the forgiveness of abuse. There is a ton to unpack here, so let’s do it together!

This episode also features a new article for The B Word, the new vertical on the Have a Blessed Gay website for outcasts to share their journeys, ideas, questions, and resources, all to do with religion and spirituality. Ep. 21 All Are Welcome (Not Really): How to be active in a church that doesn’t accept you

Ep. 21 All Are Welcome (Not Really): How to be active in a church that doesn’t accept you

Welcome to Have a Blessed Gay, your weekly spiritual-comedy podcast! Join holy host, Tyler Martin, as he critically discusses all things to do with religion and spirituality from an outcast's perspective. If you search online forums regarding women in religion or the LGBTQ+ community in religion, you’ll find a lot people asking questions like, “How can I be active in a church that doesn’t accept me?” This is a very common thread in many marginalized groups, not strictly within Christianity, but within most main world religions. Holy Host, Tyler Martin, examines why someone might participate or want to be involved in a church that is not affirming. To explore these topics, he looks at the megachurch Hillsong and Chick-Fil-A. Sometimes, like much of our country’s discriminatory legislation, bigotry and hate is hidden behind flowery language and the word “welcome.”

This is also an exciting episode because The B Word launches today, a new vertical on the Have a Blessed Gay website for outcasts to share their journeys, ideas, questions, and resources, all to do with religion and spirituality. You’ll be able to read articles from people of various religions, faiths and spiritual walks of life, who are questioning, daring to be different, and making positive changes in their communities. Toward the end of this episode, you’ll hear an excerpt from the very first article, Reclaiming the Divine Feminine Voice, by the author herself, Kimberly Bryant. The full article is now available on haveablessedgay.com/thebword. Read it and subscribe to the newsletter to know when new articles drop!

Ep. 20 Ultra-Orthodox Rabbi to Transgender Woman: Abby Chava Stein

Ep. 20 Ultra-Orthodox Rabbi to Transgender Woman: Abby Chava Stein

Welcome to Have a Blessed Gay, your weekly spiritual-comedy podcast! Join holy host, Tyler Martin, as he critically discusses social norms, current events, mental health, religion, and spirituality from an outcast's perspective. In this episode, Tyler talks with Abby Stein, a Jewish educator, writer, speaker, and activist. She was born and raised in a Hasidic Jewish community in Brooklyn, isolated in a culture that lives according to the laws and practices of eighteenth-century Eastern Europe, speaking only Yiddish and Hebrew and shunning modern life. Abby was born as the first son in a dynastic rabbinical family, poised to become a leader of the next generation of Hasidic Jews. But Abby felt certain at a young age that she was a girl. She suppressed her desire for a new body while looking for answers wherever she could find them, from forbidden religious texts to smuggled secular examinations of faith. Finally, she orchestrated a personal exodus from ultra-Orthodox manhood to mainstream femininity -- a radical choice that forced her to leave her home, her family, her way of life. In 2012, she left the Hasidic world, and In 2015 she came out as a woman of trans experience. Since coming out, she has been working to raise support and awareness for trans rights and those leaving Ultra-Orthodoxy. Her story has been covered all over the world, including  in the New York Times, New York Post, New York Magazine, and Vogue. She’s also made live appearances on CNN, NBC, ShowTime, and NowThis, just to name a few. Today she lives in New York City, now a graduate of Columbia University, and an English speaker, her 4th language. They chat about her beautiful book, Becoming Eve: My Journey from Ultra-Orthodox Rabbi to Transgender Woman, her life while in the Hasidic community, how she creatively rebelled against it until she eventually left, and how she acclimatized to a new life. Please enjoy this awesome discussion!

Welcome to Have a Blessed Gay, your weekly spiritual-comedy podcast! Join holy host, Tyler Martin, as he critically discusses religion and spirituality from an outcast's perspective. In this episode, Tyler talks with Dr. Kyl Myers! Kyl is a sociologist, educator, and globally recognized advocate of gender creative parenting. Kyl’s TEDx talk, Want Gender Equality? Let’s Get Creative, encourages people to rethink childhood gender socialization in an effort to break up the binary before it begins. Kyl is the creator of www.raisingzoomer.com and the @raisingzoomer Instagram account, advocating for letting kids be kids in an environment where everything is for everyone. You can also follow Kyl on their personal Instagram account, @Kyl_Myers, where they provide bite-size gender studies lessons. Kyl has been featured in articles in international media, including New York Magazine, HuffPost UK, and MamaMia. Their first book, Raising Them: Our Adventure in Gender Creative Parenting just came out on September 8. I got to read the book before the release and I highly recommend it! It was amazing chatting with Kyl about growing up Mormon, gender creative parenting, gender stereotypes, recognizing our own internalized bigotry, and how we can cultivate a more inclusive, empowering world for everyone, including ourselves. I absolutely adore Kyl and I know you will too! Enjoy this awesome discussion!

Ep. 18 The Homo Historian: Dr. Eric Cervini

Ep. 18 The Homo Historian: Dr. Eric Cervini

Welcome to Have a Blessed Gay, your weekly spiritual-comedy podcast! Join holy host, Tyler Martin, as he critically discusses social norms, current events, mental health, religion, and spirituality from an outcast's perspective. In this episode, Tyler talks with Dr. Eric Cervini, the award-winning historian of LGBTQ+ politics and culture. As an authority on 1960's gay activism, Eric serves on the Board of Directors of the Harvard Gender and Sexuality Caucus and on the Board of Advisors of the Mattachine Society of Washington, D.C., a nonprofit dedicated to the preservation of gay American history. His new book, The Deviant’s War: The Homosexual vs. the United States of America, was released in June and made the New York Times Bestseller’s list. Based on firsthand accounts, recently declassified FBI records, and forty thousand personal documents, The Deviant’s War unfolds over the course of the 1960's. It traces the forgotten ties that bound gay rights to the Black Freedom Movement, the New Left, lesbian activism, and trans resistance. Above all, it is a story of America (and Washington) at a cultural and sexual crossroads; of shocking, byzantine public battles with Congress; of FBI informants; murder; betrayal; sex; love; and ultimately victory. Tyler chats with Eric about the importance of learning and sharing history, and how we can use history as a tool in our spiritual tool belt.

Ep. 17 A Brief History: The Alleged Separation of Church and State

Ep. 17 A Brief History: The Alleged Separation of Church and State

Welcome to Have a Blessed Gay, your weekly spiritual-comedy podcast! Join holy host, Tyler Martin, as he critically discusses social norms, current events, mental health, religion, and spirituality from an outcast's perspective. In this episode, Tyler briefly examines America’s alleged history of the separation of church and state. According to the Bill of Rights in the Constitution, America does not/will not have an official religion. However, Christianity has basically turned into the unofficial official religion of America, desperately trying to take control of the government. Christians have a long history of religious bullying. They were some of the first people to persecute jews, there's the horrific religious crusades, and then we have the religious persecution which led Europeans fleeing for America. Anyone else find that ironic and deeply depressing? Religion corrupting government can be traced back to our earliest knowledge of government. The story of leaders weaponizing religion is, honestly, a tired and overused plot in history. Like, let’s be more creative, shall we? We repeat this story, over and over, seemingly oblivious to that fact that it’s already happened before, thousands of times. So we can stop this cycle, join Tyler in analyzing religious freedom, religious corruption, political figures like Roger Williams, and the separation of church and state in America.

Ep. 15 Queer Biblical Fanfiction with Jade Sylvan

Welcome to Have a Blessed Gay, your weekly spiritual-comedy podcast! Join holy host, Tyler Martin, as he critically discusses social norms, current events, mental health, religion, and spirituality from an outcast's perspective. In this episode, Tyler chats with Jade Sylvan! Called a “risque queer icon” by the Boston Globe, Jade is a non-binary, gender-fluid author, poet, performer, and producer. They have written pieces for The Washington Post, BuzzFeed, The Toast, PANK Magazine, and many other publications surrounding polyamory, queer identity, and LGBTQ+ issues. Jade just graduated with their Master of Divinity degree from Harvard Divinity School, where they wrote their second musical called Beloved King, a queer Biblical interpretation of the story of King David. There are ton of amazing topics we get into, like, looking at the Hebrew and Christian Bible as forms of fanfiction, the very gay story of David and Jonathan, and the concept of God having favorites.

*The book mentioned in the episode, David, The King, is by Gladys Schmitt*

Ep. 13 For They Know Not What They Do with Daniel Karslake

Welcome to Have a Blessed Gay, your weekly spiritual-comedy podcast! Join holy host, Tyler Martin, as he critically discusses social norms, current events, mental health, religion, and spirituality from an outcast's perspective. This episode, Tyler talks with Daniel Karslake, an award-winning American director, producer, and activist whose highly acclaimed work deals with pressing issues of national and international social justice. His first major film For the Bible Tells Me So, which premiered at the 2007 Sundance Film Festival and was short-listed for a 2008 Academy Award, is all about the divide between the LGBTQ+ community and the Christian Church. It’s an incredible film that breaks down the arguments made by the Christians against the LGBTQ+ community, specifically focusing on parents with gay and lesbian children. He’s continuing the conversation with his new documentary called For They Know Not What They Do, which opened at the Tribeca Film Festival, examining struggles the trans community is facing, conversion therapy, anti-LGBTQ+ legislation, and the downfall of religious freedom. Enjoy this enlightening and important conversation!
