191: “The Development Series”: A Conversation with The Addicted Lawyer, Brian Cuban (The Conversation that led to developing The 20% Podcast)
Listening to Masterclass this week, I found myself reflecting on where my journey of consistently creating content started. It was April 4th, 2020, not even 1 month into the world being flipped upside down. I was scrolling on LinkedIn and saw a video that Brian Cuban shared talking about the lessons his brother taught him from selling papers as a kid.
Seeing that video drove me to connect with Brian, and led to us sending messages back/forth
Then, I asked: “I had a question if you don’t mind. I see you took one of your hardships in life and wrote a book. As I am in my first corporate job out of college selling hardware and software, what is the best piece of advice you have on career advancement, and how you know when you are doing the thing you were destined to do?”
Brian offered to jump on a call with me to talk through these, so we jumped on a Zoom early on a Saturday morning, and Brian agreed to record. That conversation with Brian unlocked my passion for interviewing others, and sharing their career stories and lessons that others can learn from and implement in their own life
I turned this first interview into “The Development Series,” which was the catalyst for The 20% Podcast and has led to 191 straight weeks of sharing weekly episodes doing just that. This one step in doing something uncomfortable opened so many doors for me, and all it took was sending a message. Thank you Brian, for taking an hour out of your day to talk with me, it really did change my life.
Brian Cuban is this week’s guest on The 20% Podcast. In this episode, we discussed:
Lessons From Recovery To Combating Covid-19
Flexibility and Adaptability
Your Efforts Expands To Fit The Day
Failure and Resiliency
Much More!
Please enjoy this week’s episode with Brian Cuban.

165: Focusing on Your Skill Development Builds The Foundation Of Your Future with Tyler Meckes
In reflection while watching episodes, I have been looking back on my own career so far, and the skills I’ve developed.
I have been hearing more and more of teenagers, like cousins, and even at birthday parties, say that they simply don’t know what they want to do with their career.
When I hear this, I realize: That was me, I was that kid.
In reflection while hearing these episodes, I have been looking back on my own career so far, and the skills I’ve developed.
Although I never thought I would fall into sales and marketing, my path has turned me into a very well-rounded employee
My various experiences have allowed me to learn from a variety of industries, and skills, that I can now incorporate that knowledge I’ve learned into my clients.
In today’s episode, I wanted to reflect on these jobs, and the high-level lessons I’ve learned that makes me who I am today.
The big takeaway is this:
The skills that I have developed and can incorporate into my existing work are far more important than the actual title that I had.
You can’t predict the future, and 5 years ago, I would have never known where I am today, which is the same exact situation kids are in when they make their future decision to go to college.
It is crucial to focus on that skill development, because it is the foundation for your future success.
Thank you so much for your support. If there are any guests you’d like to hear me talk with on The 20% Podcast, send me a message on LinkedIn.

162: The Art of Learning Transferable Skills with Hampton Dortch
In this week’s episode, my friend Hampton Dortch takes over in the interviewer seat. A few weeks ago, I was a guest on Hampton’s, “Wake Up and Lead” podcast, where I had the opportunity to discuss the importance of transferable skills.
From studying Exercise Science to falling into sales, I knew I had to find a way to put my education to good use, and transfer the skills I developed previously into what I was doing next. The more I began incorporating previous lessons into my existing work, the more I realized that so many of the skills directly transfer from one area to another, despite the roles being vastly different in nature.
It has led me down the path of helping others unlock the skills they’ve previously developed earlier in their lives, and how they can use them to excel in their current role today.
Please enjoy this week’s episode with Hampton Dortch!
