The One About Why it Can Be So Hard to Figure Out Your Type
This episode is all about one Frequently Asked Question we get all the time: why is it sometimes so dang hard to determine your type? Well, the answer is that humans are varied and interesting and the Enneagram is multi-faceted and about what motivates you and that can be clouded by a season of stress or a very strong wing or many other things. Listen in to learn more, and if you're having trouble figuring out your type, our favorite resources are below!

The One with the Words for the Year
Happy New Year! We're back with an episode with a word for the year for each type.
Each Enneagram type has a sin they struggle with, a vice if you will. The more aware we are of how our sin/vice functions and shows up in our lives the more we can consciously work toward growing into our virtue, which is the opposite of our vice. When we step more into our virtue, we free ourselves from our ego and the unconscious habits and patterns of our type.
And that’s what we took into consideration when we compiled these words for 2023. Each word is correlated to each type’s virtue.

This episode is all about communication, which is apt year-round but particularly right now as we are headed into Peak Holiday. In this episode we talk about how to communicate with each type, why you don't need to know someone's type in order to use the Enneagram to communicate more effectively, and some things to keep in mind as you move through high-communication seasons.

The One with a Live Typing Session with Katie Dowson
Hi hello! We're back after Cass forgot to schedule the last episode because it's Branding Season on the ranch and she doesn't know what day it is. But, this episode is worth the wait because it's our very first LIVE typing session!
Our guest for this episode is Katie Dowson, who is the owner of Seed Life. Seed Life is a company she started several years ago that treats all brands of seeds to growers across the Midwest. She is married to a farmer, the mother of a 1.5-year-old little girl and they live in Central Illinois.
Sometimes it can be hard to determine your type even after reading (or listening!) about all the types, and a typing session is just the ticket to help figure it out. Katie asks great questions and this episode was so much fun! We hope you enjoy it.
If you're still struggling with figuring out your type and would like to do a live typing session, DM us on Instagram @typeitoutpodcast or send us a message at hello@typeitoutpodcast.com!

The One with Stances
Stances are similar to triads in that there are three types that belong to each stance. But the stances are made up of one type from each triad and they can often shed a better light when determining your type.
AGGRESSIVE STANCE
The aggressive stance is made up of 3, 7, 8.
Move against others and have an unconscious drive to reshape people and situations to suit them. They each do this a bit differently – 3s use their chameleon powers, 7s use their reframing reflex, and 8s take charge.
All in this stance are feeling repressed. And as a result, all are oriented to the future, where there aren’t yet feelings.
WITHDRAWING STANCE
The withdrawing stance is comprised of 4, 5, 9.
These types move away from others and are not influenced at all by the crowd. Fours want to be unique. Fives want to preserve their energy. And nines want to avoid having their peace and inner stability disrupted.
The folks here are doing repressed and oriented to the past, where the doing has already been done.
DEPENDENT STANCE
The dependent stance is made up of 1, 2, 6

The One About Stress and Security
Hi friends! We're continuing our series about determining your type and today we're talking about stress and security--we both love the aspect of the Enneagram so very much.
Warning: Terryn's audio is a little hinky at the beginning, but don't worry, it gets better a few minutes in. We're not sure what happened but we're blaming the Nebraska wind #ruralprobs and we'd apologize except we all know Ranch Wind In Springtime is a entity and journey unto itself.
Our personalities are fluid and nuanced, and part of that fluidity is where we go in stress and security (or sickness and health. IYKYK.)
Each type has a number that draws from in stress and a number they draw from when they are on the path of growth. Thinking about where you go in each of these areas can help you determine your type.
The One About Motivations
This is episode 2 in our series about finding your type. Last time, we gave you questions about each type without telling you which was which. This time, we're telling you which of those questions belong with each type, and more about each type's fear, desire/weakness/deadly sin/passion, and longing--basically, what makes each type tick.
Even if you know your type, listen in because this episode may help you learn more about other types, what's in their heart, and how to communicate better with them.
If you have questions, please DM us on insta @typeitoutpodcast or send us an email to hello@typeitoutpodcast.com
Fair warning: this episode goes off the rails just a little bit at times. Forgive us. We recorded it after 8pm.

The One About How to Determine Your Type
We’re kicking off a new series that was inspired by a listener FAQ, “how do I find my type?”
In this episode we’re going to discuss what determines our core type and give you some questions to ask yourself and ruminate on to help you land on your core type.
What determines your core type and how to find it?
First off, it isn’t characteristics but your motivations that determine your core type. It's about motivations--fear, desire, deadly sin, and longing. Tests can be a fine place to start but can be inaccurate. You can start there, but we still recommend reading about the motivations behind each type. The Road Back to You by Suzanne Stabile and Ian Morgan Cron is our favorite. Cass also loves the Enneagram series that Jen Hatmaker does on her podcast!
You can also use the following questions as a starting point to determining your type. You might note that we don’t actually name the types here. That’s because we don’t want you to use what you know about a particular type to sway your answers.
Motivation Questions
Self-Reliance
Am I motivated by being totally self-reliant? Do I mask vulnerability to appear strong?
Do I have a hard time with feelings of betrayal and as a result work hard to never have to rely on anyone else for any reason?
Keeping the Peace
Am I motivated by keeping the peace at almost any cost?
Do I avoid confrontation like the plague?
Do I ignore or fall asleep to my desires, needs, and passions in order to keep the peace around me?
Perfection
Am I motivated by being good, right, and perfect?
Do I fear being wrong or bad?
Do I have a strong inner critic* that constantly points out my flaws and causes me to feel less than?
*The inner critic is different than self-talk. The inner critic is there all day every day and generally isn't kind. Cass you speak to what the inner critic is here.
Love & Appreciation
Am I motivated by being loved and appreciated by those around me?
Do I fear being rejected and feeling unwanted?
Do I deny my own needs to focus on the feelings of others?
Admiration + Affirmation
Am I motivated by being admired and receiving affirmation of that admiration?
Do I fear being a failure and appearing unsuccessful?
Do I feel the need to put on a polished persona always?
Uniqueness
Am I motivated by being unique and authentic?
Do I fear being ordinary?
Do I feel flawed as if there’s something foundationally missing from me that others have?
Knowledge
Am I motivated by always being knowledgeable, capable, and competent?
Do I fear feeling incapable, ignorant, or losing my energy reserve?
Do I often feel depleted by interaction with others and the world around me?
Security & Support
Am I motivated by having support and feeling secure?
Do I fear feeling fear and being without support?
Do I find myself trying to predict and prevent any and all negative outcomes that may come in life?
Happiness + Fulfillment
Am I motivated by being happy and satisfied?
Do I fear being trapped, limited, and bored?
Do I have a strong desire to feel content, but a hard time achieving contentment?
In our next episode, we’ll be revealing which of these motivations goes with which type and refreshing our knowledge of each type a bit.
The One About Sevens with Mary Pat Sass
Hey friends! It’s Christmas week and we’re so excited to share this episode with you. We’re back with Mary Pat Sass, midwestern farm wife and mom from Northern Illinois. Two years ago, she decided to leave her corporate career in agriculture technology to be home with her kiddo (now kiddoS!) and more involved with their family farm. What she thought was her dream job turned out to be the one thing keeping her from living her dream life.
Now, she works to inspire others to find their passions through sharing her own experiences. She’s started her own business (yes we talk about this in the episode!) while raising two kiddos and fulfilling the role of “farm wife”. She shares the beauty of their everyday life and gives a behind-the-scenes look on the farm.
Type seven is referred to as the enthusiast. Sevens are motivated by maintaining their freedom and happiness. Sevens compulsively plan and take in exciting experiences and fun things to avoid feelings of pain or unpleasantness.

The One About Sixes with JaTanna Williams
Hi hello happy December (WHAT) and yay new episode! Today it's all about those sixes with our lovely friend JaTanna Williams. JaTanna Williams is the mother to four wild and carefree kiddos and the wife to a sixth generation rancher. As a full-time pharmacist and part-time “ranch hand,” she is happiest at home living the simple everyday moments. Her love for the mothers of rural America has inspired her to share her family’s story and create a space for ranch wives to connect and celebrate the everyday wins and support each other through the pits.
Type six is referred to as the loyalist. Sixes are motivated by having security and feeling supported. Sixes, in general, go over worst-case scenarios in their heads and seek out strong authority or beliefs to help them feel secure.

The One About Fives with Brooke Clay Taylor
Hi hello! We're back to talk everything Five with the incomparable Brooke Clay Taylor. You all may know Brooke from her Rural Gone Urban empire and of her beautiful words and sharing of The Real Reel on Instagram. A farm and ranch girl by birth and upbringing, Brooke is now a digital branding and storytelling expert, wife, mama, adventurer and so many other things. After stints in Charlotte, Austin, and Nashville, Brooke found a home base in rural eastern Oklahoma where she lives with her wildlife lovin’ husband, new baby girl, a beast of a chocolate lab, and her ranch dog, Molly.
She works from where ever there is high-speed internet to collaborate with boundary-pushing clients in the agricultural industry, advise entrepreneurs in their initiatives, and manage the Rural Gone Urban online boutique.
Type five is referred to as the investigator. Fives are motivated by having knowledge and understanding. In general, fives are afraid they lack the inner resources to meet the needs of others and demands of life so they hoard/work really hard to preserve things like knowledge, privacy, time, and affection.

The One About Twos with Kiah Twisselman Burchett
Boy howdy are we excited for this episode! We're back with an episode about Type Twos and our guest today is the incomparable Kiah Twisselman Burchett. Kiah is a cattle rancher turned life coach and speaker, passionate about empowering others to create a physically, mentally, and emotionally healthy life they love with a mindset-first approach. After battling with her own weight and body image from a young age, she embarked on her own personal health journey losing over 100 pounds, but more importantly, the mental weight she had been carrying with her for years. Her story has been shared in People Magazine, Good Morning America, the Kelly Clarkson Show, Women’s Health, and more as she uses her struggles to give strength to others walking the same journey. Growing up as a 6th generation cattle rancher, she has a heart for rural America, the agriculture community, and the western way of life. Nothing makes her heart fuller than being able to intertwine her calling for health and wellness into the community she grew up in.
Type two is referred to as the helper. Twos secretly believe others have more needs than they do and would be lost without them. In this episode, Kiah shares her experience as a two, why understanding where twos go in growth (4) and stress (8) has been so helpful for her, and how she is using her two-ness to help women everywhere.

The One About Ones with Cassidy Johnston
We're back with an episode about Type One! Our "guest" today is our very own Cass, who is, of course, a very "one" one.
Cassidy Johnston (but just call her Cass) lives with her husband and three little boys on a large cattle ranch in the mountains of south-central Colorado. Raised in town, she's been living the ranch life for over ten years after God decided that her big plans of law school and a BMW were not a good fit (he was right). She loves wide-open spaces, cool mountain mornings, watching the same movies over and over, talking about agriculture with anyone and everyone, reading (sometimes junk) fiction, going on adventures with her boys, long walks, seasonal decor, finding weird places to put Christmas lights, and snacks. You can find her at @casskjohn on Instagram!
Type one is referred to as the reformer or perfectionist. Ones strive to perfect the world around them and become resentful toward themselves and those around them who cannot live up to their standards. Ones have an inner critic who can be a little tough sometimes but also helps them to see where improvements and efficiencies can be made, which can be pretty handy. The Ones in your life are the listmakers, the dishwasher reloaders, the action planners.

The One About Nines with Terryn Drieling
We're back with an episode about Type Nines! Our "guest" today is our very own Terryn, who is, of course, a nine. We all know Terryn as not only the T in "T and Cass" but a ranching wife, mama of three, follower of Jesus and lover of coffee, who is also a writer, entrepreneur, dog-trainer extraordinaire, the nicest human, an excellent cook, inventor of Awesomely Honest Hats and the force behind @faithfamilyandbeef and www.faithfamilyandbeef.com.
(Cass wrote this bio, just FYI. T is also very humble so it's my job to do some jazz hands about her awesomeness.)
Type nine is also referred to as the peacemaker. Nines are spiritually lazy people who have a tendency to merge with others' priorities and preferences to maintain their inner peace and avoid conflict. In this episode we talk about sloth (and sloths), why seeing all sides isn't always the best, hot tips for engaging with and supporting nines, and why Terryn sometimes has trouble with waffles.

The One About Eights with Alli Kelley
Today's episode is all about Type 8s, also known as The Challenger. Our guest is Alli Kelley, who is, of course, an eight! Alli Kelley is the creator of the blog Longbourn Farm where she shares simple homemade recipes. Alli believes that family meals create special moments and those moments become treasured memories. In addition to tried-and-true kitchen favorites, Alli shares practical farm and garden tips. She used her formal education in agriculture to help her audience understand farming and ranching. She believes knowledge and choices in the grocery store empower you to feel confident in the kitchen!
In this episode, we talk all about eights, from Alli's "a-ha" moment when she realized she herself was an eight to how we can better communicate with eights and what she would love us all to know about eights. For a little off-Enneagram info about Alli, be sure to check out the bloopers after the show :)

The One with the Overview
Episode 2 – Intro to the Enneagram
Your enneagram type – is determined by motivations not traits. You are what you are. The enneagram is fluid, which means you can move around drawing from other types depending on what your wings are or where you are in stress and health, but your core type never changes.
First rule of the enneagram – you DO NOT tell your friends their type.
Our feelings on tests – they’re an okay place to start, but you really have to read and learn and decide which motivations are yours to determine your type.
Gut triad includes 8, 9, and 1.
They tend to approach life by acting first and thinking later. Anger is boiling just beneath the surface.
Heart triad includes 2, 3, and 4.
They tend to approach life with emotions. Shame is always sitting beneath the surface.
Head triad includes 5, 6, and 7.
They tend to (over)think and plan. Fear is always waiting just beneath the surface.

The One with the Intro to Us
Type It Out Teaser – Intro to us and the podcast
Welcome to Type it Out with T and Cass - the podcast where we talk all things enneagram and ag, learning and growing together in who we were made to be.
We’re T and Cass - a couple of ranching women who are also self-professed enneagram nerds. You may have heard of the enneagram, but for those who haven’t – the enneagram is a personality typing system, but it’s not like all the others. Where the others determine your type based on traits, your enneagram type is determined by motivations.
In our next episode, we’ll dive more into what the enneagram is, the different types, and some common misconceptions. But for now, we’re going to introduce ourselves and how this podcast came to be.
Disclaimer: We want to leave you with the disclaimer that we are by no means enneagram experts. But we know first-hand how the enneagram has helped us in our own lives, and we can’t help but share it with other women in ag and the world, really.
