This month I read a total of 9 books and talk about a few more. Here are some small reviews of:The Summer I Died by Ryan C. When Horror Stops Being Scary • Why actually scary books may not exist
Today I want to talk about a critique I see all the time in the horror community. You see it in reviews, Reddit threads, BookTube comments—people asking for recommendations that will finally, actually, really scare them, like there’s one perfect book out there that’ll do the trick. Some seem to have bought into marketing and literally want a white-knuckled thrill-ride of scares... and that might just be impossible. Fear is incredibly personal, and what terrified one reader might feel totally flat to someone else. And more importantly most seasoned horror readers aren’t actually looking to be scared every time. This is just the genre and the themes they enjoy. It’s not always about fear—it’s about atmosphere, tension, projection, characters, and dark imagination. So I’ve pulled together seven reasons why horror novels might not be scaring you anymore—and why that’s not necessarily a bad thing.Let me know in the comments what the last book was that genuinely creeped you out—or if like me, you think horror doesn’t have to actually scare you to be great. Weekly Horror Reading • End of April Gems!
DId the master of modern horror Robert Bloch write for the Devil? What do Brian Keene and H.P. Lovecraft have in common? What is reekly wead anyway? These questions hardly answered and more, this week at Typical Books of Terror. Since two books does not constitute a haul, here is a small variety episode. April Reading Catchup • Buying less and reading more!
So far this month I've read quite a few advance reading copies of good books. One was a real fit for me with some writing style snags, and one was not a fit at all, but I read it anyway to see how the creatures fared. One book bought, TED Klein's Reassuring Tales; and one book gifted, Pieces of Madness by Kasey Pierce. Coming up I'll be reading Senseless by Ronal Malfi and a few more books off thebackward shelf. Speaking of which, I'll be tracking all of this a lot better using a new spreadsheet method. I've been looking for a better way to track my reading and this may just be the thing! Victorian Psycho • Naughty Notty Book Review
Victorian Psycho was a book that I noticed while compiling the new release list for February 2025. The yellow colour of the cover jumped out at me with the use of a fitting scalloped font and the oil painted girl’s face. You may recall that I likened this to the cover of the film Incident in a Ghostland. The book and film are very different but have a similar tone because in both there is someone completely unhinged rampaging around a gorgeous cluttered Victorian mansion. For readers that have sought the darkest of dark Victorian literature I think this would be a superb addition. The research and attention to detail about 19th century life are Illuminating and interesting. Of course it has modern element like a sophisticated worldview, modern pacing uses fairly genre language. This dance between dark disturbing and outright grotesque is something you would only find in contemporary literature. While it can be compared to a strange blend of Turn of the Screw, The Yellow Wallpaper and American Psycho, I think that there are also some film comparisons to be made with The Haunting of Hill House, the series Penny Dreadful and Crimson Peak. I absolutely enjoyed this book and it will seek previous books and forthcoming work from Virginia Feito. I listened to her interview on Talking Scared podcast, which was an interesting chat this Spanish-born author where we learn this is being made into a film right this very minute. A dark joy to read in a very cool tone, Victorian Psycho has been the most refreshingly sick books I’ve read so far this year. New Horror Books for March • 18 creepy covers and twisted tales!
There are 18 new horror books this month that caught my eye. Some of these covers are truly perfect, and we have everything from collections, gothics, and eco-horror to choose from. There is a mini-trend of using thorns on the covers this month, and only one with yellow text (insert sad trombone noise of lore and infamy here). Duotone covers remain a trend, though we see more photographic entries this time around. The most often used font is Helvetica, and that can't be a surprise as it is the most often used font in the entire world. I should say that anytime I say Helvetica, I do mean a grotesk type of font; a sans-serif Helvetica-like font. I don't do the research needed to name each one exactly. Arial, Grotesk, Impact, Proxima, who knows! What I call a bellbottom or bootleg or bootcut font is probably better described as a psychedelic or hippy font.As ever in horror, a lot of books feature black and houses on the covers, and this month is no exception. Late Winter Reading Catchup • Some Hits, Some Misses
Over the last month I was able to get into a few review copies, a potential Bram Stoker nominee, some of the books on the backward shelf, and plan my reading to come. Two if the most popular books I got to - and loved - were Victorian Psycho by Virginia Fieto and This Wretched Valley by Jenny Kiefer. No wonder so many people had these on their reading list over the last few months! Really great work, on both counts. Reviews will be up on typicalbooks.com shortly. I read the wonderful MrBallen graphic novel which was very fun and wonderfully illustrated. If you've not watched his channel and like the 'strange, dark and mysterious' I'd check it out. After finishing an Eric LaRocca book I was not that keen on, I am looking forward to another. At Dark I Become Loathsome has had mixed reviews as well but there is nothing I like better than seeing a book out for myself. Coming up I have Pressure by Jeff Strand and with luck, Little Eve by Catroina Ward as well. 17 Best New Horror Reads: Sinister stories, stunning art for February
Back to regular books! 17 of them! There are quite a few books coming as if there were not enough last month and they are making up for it. So many covers this month feature a black background and bright yellow text. Lithograph or woodcut style is in vogue, as is madness and folk horror. Sure, we have some outliers like books about snuff films (yes, please) and books bucking the trend with black text on a slime green background, but it seems the stamped or inked look is in. We have quite a few debut authors here. If December and January had a lot of heavy hitters, in February we see a lot of new names on the front pages. So, enjoy this list! My Top Ten Horror Books of 2024 • Out of 40+ harrowing reads!
Another year, another top ten, and yet another where I did not make my goal of 52 books. Close! But not quite. The top ten surprised me in a few ways, but the very top book was a given for me ~ as with any year, that number one spot just sort of stands out. I also discuss a few plans going forward, like reading more Richard Laymon, Edward Lee, and Ronald Malfi - all of which feature here. Indeed, there is a Lee book in the mail as we speak, and a few more in the works. You may see a few books mentioned through the year - or even recently read - that are not in the list. Either I totally forgot them, they were not on Goodreads, or I did not actually finish them. Four honourable mentions that should have been here, with three making the top fifteen are: All These Steps Lead Down - Nelson W. Pyles Did You Hear What Eddie Gein Done? - Eric Powell and Harold Schechter Rare Specimen and Other Stories - S.J. Shank Acts of Violence: Twelve Tales of Terror - Marcus Hawke Nineteen Little Stab Wounds - Alexis DuBon As mentioned, I will be reading along with the #richardlaymonbookclub on instagram curated by @constantreader89! Flipping Unread Books • Reading What I Own
For the 2025 version of the Read What You Own Challenge, I decided to flip the script. And flip the books. Literally. I chose 26 books that I have not read from my shelves and turned them around to create a fore-edge shelf. This is an aesthetic style of shelving that many people dislike... and you know... it kind of looks neat when it is just one shelf like this. The list has some Stephen King, Eric LaRocca, Richard Laymon, Josh Malerman and more! So, after talking a little about the books I have read lately, and how great L'Entre-Sort bookshop is, we get into the 26 books, where they came from, why they sat unready and how excited I am to get to them. I'll choose a book every week or two to read and that is my challenge for the year sorted! Be sure to check out L'Entre-Sort of Etsy and subscribe to Madam LaMort's channel. Extreme Horror Haul ft. Edward Lee + January Reads
I’ve read a good amount of books so far in January and had some amazing book mail too! I did get a chance to finish Linghun by Ai Jiang, and have wrapped up Strange Stones, The Rising: Selected Scenes from the End of the World, Wake Up and Open Your Eyes, then jumped into The Ushers by Edward Lee, a short story collection by one of my most favourite extreme horror authors. The Edward Lee book came from a shipment of books ordered from an amazing dealer and writer who is downsizing his collection - and there is more to come. I have a real soft spot for old Deadite Press books so there are a few of those, and maybe more Edward Lee eventually. For now, we have The Ushers, Dahmer’s Not Dead, Flesh Gothic, Brain Cheese Buffet, and White Trash Gothic 2. I swore I had White Trash Gothic so may have to find that one elsewhere, On top of that, I did order We Used to Live Here by Marcus Kliewer which is what I am reading now. Fear Fuel for Yule • 21 winter horror novels
For every twenty Halloween and autumn horror books there must be at least one winter horror, or dare I say Christmas horror book out there. Chilly snowy horror is especially scary to me because for one, Christmas is creepy and unhinged, and most of all I can’t take the cold. I am not a Chrismtas fan, and indeed I resent capitalizing it. I love the look of winter, the idea of staying cozy, the starving wolves surrounding your cabin at night and firelight to fend off the shortening days. Winter sports are interesting to me but I’d rather chop wood over figure skating, ice fishing over downhill skiing. Snowshoeing and cross country skiing are really great but I’d rather take a winter stroll on a packed trail or winter market for sure. Even with winter horror I would rather hear the sound of snowfall over carols and seeing the story’s hero melting snow for water to survive over mixing drinks at a family dinner. Most of the big names in horror come out to play, however, and there is something for everyone on a list like this. If you are after more tinsel and mistletoe, there are hundreds of lists online, but I wanted a little list here that is well rounded and offers some of the best names in horror and a few smaller or less known titles too! The Shining by Stephen King Black Christmas by Thomas Altman Snow by Ronald Malfi Nos4A2 by Joe Hill The Christmas City Vampire Larry Diebert A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens Human Santapede by Adam Millard The Thief of Always by Clive Barker Snowblind by R. Saint Claire Served Cold by various edited by R. Saint Claire Where the Dead Go to Die by Aaron Dries and Mark Allan Gunnells Krampus by Brom Dead of Winter by Darcy Coates Voices in the Snow by Darcy Coates Ghost Story by Peter Straub Moon of the Crusted Snow by Waubgeshig Rice Hell house by Graham Masterson Rosemary’s Baby by Ira Levin Let Me In John A. Best New horror books • Chilly holiday haunts for December 2024
Horror takes a holiday in the winter - but then, don't we all? Publishing agents, editors, bookbinders and print shops are no exception. Everything slows down in December, but we all still buy books. Sometimes many times more due to gifts! See all of the books I talk about today at https://typicalbooks.com/newhorror. Books are my gift of choice, and it is not even a celebration of Jolabokaflod; just wanting to spread bookworm joy. Usually there are more winter horror and holiday themed books to choose from but 2024 is a little slim. It is a little slim all around, as not many horror books are coming out this December at all; but I found some real gems for us! We start with three x-massy books, and dig into some new standalones, new collections and some splatter westerns to see us off into the sunset. Are you reading anything special this year? Maybe with so few new books coming out, we can read something a little different or choose some cozy favourites off the shelf. These will still make great gifts for the horror love in town, for sure! Happy December! There has been a lot of reading going on here as I've overlapped so many books the past month, and have just gotten around to finishing and reviewing some. Dark Gifts on a Dark Day • My Horror Birthday Haul!
Some amazing books were gifted to me or picked up while thrifting for my 49th birthday. My wonderful husband knows my tastes better than I do! Here we find some Bradbury, Brom, Ballingrud, Ballen, and more! We talk about the Stephen King series The Dark Tower, where I was slowly collecting the old Plume editions—and have now completed that. I suppose I’ll have to find the Scribner ones to finish it off next. The biggest change is a new camera! I'll be experimenting with this for a while, but so far, it looks great! Thank you, Chris, for this! Birthdays are odd for me, being so close to Christmas. Many late-December Sagittarians may commiserate—how do you separate the holidays and your day? I often wish I could celebrate in January, but then, why not May? How about October! I’m very lucky to spend birthdays—now that I’m older—reading and relaxing, with a fine meal as a highlight. Then, more books! Heads Will Roll • Summer Camp Horror Book Review
Heads Will Roll lives up to the cover and I enjoyed this quite a bit. It's skews a little young though not quite YA, but maybe not as brutal as I had hoped. Heads Will Roll by Josh Winning 2024, G.P. Putnam's Sons, Penguin https://amzn.to/3YY6Lre Cover design by Vi-An Nguyen I think every time I read a camp slasher I go back to Friday the 13th or Sleepaway Camp as far as film goes and in books you know... I really only have Con Season by Adam Caesar to equate this to. If you know of any other campground in the cabins pine needle strewn pathway camp slashers that live up to those, let me know. I've also likened it as well to Supermassive games like The Quarry so I highly recommend that if you haven't played it yet or if you did enjoy it, definitely check out Heads Will Roll. ✮✮✮✮✮✮ ▹ Bookworm decor is here! https://shop.typicalbooks.com/ ▹ All socials, the shop and news: https://linktr.ee/LydiaPeever ▹ Read books I wrote: https://amzn.to/3k20OY6 ▹ A list of horror books out each month: https://typicalbooks.com/newhorror ▹ Bookshop: https://bookshop.org/shop/typicalbooks to shop local! ▹ Music by ænorex: https://aenorex.com As an Amazon Associate, I earn from qualifying purchases when you use Amazon links here. I am bad at YouTube • BookTube
This is the story of a girl who was not that good at youtube, and when she was bad, she was horrid... (We will be back to normal booktube by Sunday with a look at new horror books coming out in September.) Rachel from the Shades of Orange had a brilliant idea with this tag. I may not do many tags, but she does even less! I not only had a laugh with some parts of her video, but she had me nodding in agreement, or yelling at clouds as the topic can be subtly dramatic for me. Just when I thought I was over it, Olly did this over at CriminOlly and it was also a very good video. Again, subtly dramatic for me! They are both very good YouTubers with very good channels. Want to see an actual bad booktuber? Well step right up! Maybe this was somewhat based on Daniel Greene’s The Worst BookTuber on Youtube, but I didn’t finish watching his video for whatever reason. Probably because I too, am a bad booktuber... 12 Tales to Terrify! • The Boris Karloff Horror Anthology
Not long ago I picked up The Boris Karloff Horror Anthology which is a 1960s book put out by souvenir press. The book as advertised contains horror stories of the time chosen by Boris Karloff of horror movie fame. Aside from two outliers most of the stories range from the early 1930s to the late 1950s and of course includes an earlier tale by HP Lovecraft entitled The Haunter of the dark and an Edgar Allan Poe story entitled The Cask of Amontillado. Some of the authors here have names that filled me with joy like August Derleth and Robert Bloch. I was very curious to read an entry by Roald Dahl. The surprises, to me, were stories by Theodore Sturgeon entitled The Graveyard Reader and John Jakes’ The Opener of the Crypt which Boris Karloff highlights in his introduction. I very much enjoyed the first story in the book The 13th Floor by Frank Gruber. In this video I will talk about some of the stories very briefly without any real description so you can enjoy these stories and discover them for yourself; but I do show the artwork that accompanied each chapter - artwork that may be by the same Illustrator as the cover which is the enigmatic S.R. Boldero. True Horror! True Crime • Graphic Novels
True crime is the most graphic of horror - yet graphic novels are one of the most balanced ways to tell these stories. Perhaps it is the constraints to the page, or the smaller amount of text for lurid details, and in the few book I talk about today the limited palette of colours; often black and white. While these are stories we know well - Dahmer, Gein, Ridgway - I found these books told it in a new and arresting way. I am on the look out for more. With the most recent addition to my small collection, Torso, I get to go back in time to the most wicked cold case of all, The Mad Butcher of Kingsbury Run. I got my copy here: https://amzn.to/46jRmTD or find it on BookShop https://bookshop.org/a/12297/9781506730257. I'll have a review or discussion soon enough but this comes highly recommended! I checked to see if it was YA but it seemed to be a straight-up haunted house, haunted town, haunted past coming-of-age horror so I was sold. Lots of horror stories involving kids, teens, or coming of age aren't YA books so I figured this would be a fit. When ECW asked if I wanted a review copy, I jumped on it, so thank you ECW! From the back cover: After the tragic death of their father and surviving a life-threatening eating disorder, 18-year-old Ellis moves with their mother to the small town of Black Stone, seeking a simpler life and some space to recover. But Black Stone feels off; it’s a disquieting place surrounded by towns with some of the highest death rates in the country. It doesn’t help that everyone says Ellis’s new house is haunted — everyone including Quinn, a local girl who has quickly captured Ellis’s attention. And Ellis has started to believe what people are saying: they see pulsing veins in their bedroom walls and spectres in dark corners of the cellar. Together, Ellis and Quinn dig deep into Black Stone’s past and soon discover that their town, and Ellis’s house in particular, is the battleground in a decades-long spectral war, one that will claim their family — and the town — if it’s allowed to continue. This is a very small horror book haul featuring the Boris Karloff Horror Anthology, Dead and Buried by Chelsea Quinn Yarbro, Fountain Society by Wes Craven, and The Worm and his Kings by Hailey Piper… with a special unboxing of D.L. The Haunting of Velkwood by Gwendoline Krist may just be my favourite book of the year so far and we'll just wait and see to see if it becomes the favourite book of 2024. Well, I don't have a whole bunch of photos from my little tiny vacation I do have one Sunset photo included in this video which may be of interest because it is for seconds of pure relaxation. heading out to the library book sale this weekend so there may be some more Acquisitions to come but in the meantime here is some contact information for DL Tillery ~ thank you so much for watching have a new key spooky day! My Booktube Identity • Is horror a style?
What is my style of booktube? A booktube identity, as it were. A really good question to which I ask: is horror a style? I mean, on the surface level you could say there is a horror aesthetic that many fans embrace, and skulls often find their place in our decor. Horror novels and being a horror reader may not, however, be as obvious - especially when our bookshelves when only containing books look a lot like any other genre fan. So, for a little fun thinkpiece, we delve into six questions about what sort of booktube channel we have here. Questions discussed here are:: 1. What do you want your channel to be known for? 2. What content will people find on your channel? 3. What is the most represented genre of books? 4. What book are you known for championing? 5. What author is regularly featured on your channel? 6. What can people expect in the future? (reveal some exciting plans) 7. Tag people and state 'what you know them for?'. (wherein I just leave this an open tag) I watched this over at Reading This Life - Revealing My BookTube Identity: What I'm Known For #tag #booktube • Revealing My BookTube Identity: What ... Rural Victorian Dark Horror • Grey Dog by Elliott Gish
Like a dark and twisted Anne of Green Gables, this book was a welcome addition for me; and very well written for a debut novel. I was happily surprised at how much I related to the very odd and “unlikable” main character Ada Byrd. There was a great balance of late-Victorian references and modern sensibility, as well as a cozy atmosphere created by the diary style of the book. The ideas of intimate desire, reckless abuse and longing for friendship were so blurred at times, that there was a lovely sort of delirium created for the reader which mirrored the iceberg tip of the madness forming in Ada. Absolutely beautiful reading in Grey Dog, by Elliott Gish. I'd wanted to read this and was so pleased when ECW reached out with a review copy ~ thank you, Claire! While perusing catalogs of new books coming out Grey Dog caught my eye because of the contradictory nature of its cover. I was hoping that it would have something to do with sort of a body horror or some animalistic nature transformation and I wasn't exactly right although there is some sort of body horror... if you count the use of dead animals and a little skull within the story. The stark nature of what almost looks like a woodcut lent itself to the description of this book taking place in the 1900s so I caught a “botanical dark academia” flavour just from the illustration on the front. Much to my delight the author is from the East Coast and did find inspiration in Lucy Maud Montgomery and the Anne of Green Gables, so if you ever wanted that in horror form, this is one for you! This is the debut novel by Elliott Gish and I am looking forward to more. Pick up Grey Dog here https://amzn.to/3UgdlXe From the back cover copy: “The year is 1901, and Ada Byrd ― spinster, schoolmarm, amateur naturalist ― accepts a teaching post in isolated Lowry Bridge, grateful for the chance to re-establish herself where no one knows her secrets. She develops friendships with her neighbours, explores the woods with her students, and begins to see a future in this tiny farming community. Her past ― riddled with grief and shame ― has never seemed so far away...” ✮✮✮✮✮✮ ▹ Bookworm decor is here! https://shop.typicalbooks.com/ ▹ All socials, the shop and news: https://linktr.ee/LydiaPeever ▹ Read books I wrote: https://amzn.to/3k20OY6 ▹ A list of horror books out each month: https://typicalbooks.com/newhorror ▹ Bookshop: https://bookshop.org/shop/typicalbooks to shop local! ▹ Music by ænorex: https://aenorex.com As an Amazon Associate, I earn from qualifying purchases when you use Amazon links here. Spring Haul of Horror and Esoterica • Stellar finds at Apport Books
It is now our annual trip to Apport Books in sunny Emmaus, Pennsylvania. While I picked up books from other stores, they all pale compared to the selection, vibe, and dedication to genre fiction that my favourite bookstore does. Visit Apport in the flesh, or remote-view a selection of books on offer at / apportusedbooks . 17 books hauled, about half horror, and all perfect additions to my library. While this is a plain haul video, I may do another vlog-style video next year where we visit not only the best bookstore in the galaxy but Dino's Pizza Teria too. Not only are there some Frank Belknap Long and Jack Ketchum books in here, but there are cults, true crime, horror masters, and governmental disasters... and poetry. It is all lost without a little poetry.
