Word With Ty Brownlow Ep.#66 Jenelle Simpson

Word With Ty Brownlow Ep.#66 Jenelle Simpson

Commitment To A Deceitful Liar” is a look inside the life of the author, raised in a West Indian home with all its beliefs and myths. How to unlearn instilled toxic generational cycles and relearn how to move to new levels in our lives. Simpson kept all the images and experiences of her growing up, close. Her armor. The first-time author struggled with telling all for this book, but truth is the story and Simpson reveals all of hers. Sexual abuse, rape, experiences surrounded by drugs and strippers and, various struggles within the black community, and her struggle to escape repeated generational cycles passed down. Simpson readily admits, her truth is not always pretty. Her old self would have worried what people thought, but her new self believes that only the raw truth speaks to people. The truths, you find through the growing and healing process, remembering, no one takes the same route to get to the same place.

Simpson uses some Jamaican Patios dialect to bring the Jamaican culture and its effect alive for her readers. The author masterfully intertwines the different cultures as a background for “Commitment To A Deceitful Liar.” The title first came from the shock and pain Simpson felt from a deeply personnel experience. In the moment, she was numb, but it was not a place the strong-willed Simpson was going to linger. The title, today, serves as much more than one life incident, but an inclusive umbrella of sorts. Lies come from many different sources throughout our lives. They can be dangerous. Once we begin unraveling those lies, for answers, we don’t always like what we find. But, through truth, we learn to forgive and create our own walk-through life, not in the eyes of others… but our own.

Word With Ty Brownlow Ep.#57 Lavar Jacobs

After tragically losing his mother to breast cancer in 2009, Lavar Jacobs, Founder of nonprofit organization Not Just October set out to make a difference through education, unconventional awareness, advocacy and compassion. Having a goal of opening the first ever Black-owned breast cancer center in memory of his late mother Kim Jacobs has always been Jacobs' objective. On Saturday, May 1, 2021 that goal will be a reality. From 1pm - 3pm EST, Jacobs will be receiving friends, family and guests for the grand opening of the Kim Jacobs Breast Cancer Resource Center (KJC). The Kim Jacobs Breast Cancer Resource Center is located at 946 Kenmore Blvd, Akron, Ohio 44314 and will serve as the home of Not Just October. The center is the first and only breast cancer center to be Black-owned and operated in the state of Ohio. Most importantly, KJC will serve as a hub for women, men and families affected by breast cancer to come receive counseling services, speak with an on-site nurse, have access to a food pantry, hair and makeup services, access to library books, a children’s center, and schedule services such law care, snow removal and so much more. Wearing pink in the month of October is a nice representation of and acknowledgement of breast cancer, but if you ask the patients who battle the disease year-round, they’d beg to differ and that’s why Jacobs has made it his life's mission to create an organization and safe space for women and their families ALL year and not just during the month of October. “All of the hard work and dedication in my community over the past six years through Not Just October has led us to this momentous point. Words cannot simply express the excitement flowing through my body as we embark on the journey that is the Kim Jacobs Breast Cancer Resource Center! I can feel the presence of my mom in the walls and I know that she is here with me and smiling down from heaven. My mom was the catalyst, passion has been the fuel, and the strength of all of the women currently battling breast cancer has been the driving force of our mission at Not Just October. I’m looking forward to making a huge difference now and forever!” says Lavar Jacobs, Founder of Not Just October. Word With Ty Brownlow Ep.#55 Rex & Shawanda Coble of Coble's Landing

Coble's Landing is the only Black-owned private nature preserve in the South East and second on the entire East coast.

The 25 acres of land are owned by husband and wife, Rex and Shawanda Coble in Polkton, NC, the hometown of Rex and his maternal family. The Coble's who have two children have always participated in outdoor leisure such as camping, 4-weelers, and hiking; but during COVID they increased their enjoyment of the outdoors for family morale.

As they spent more time outdoors, they noticed the disparities among treatment and the basic feeling of being welcome in the outdoor leisure space when it came to people of color. Rex accounts for times when he and his family were asked to leave certain parks or offered less than adequate camping spaces.

After hearing similar stories from other families, the Coble's decided to create a safe space for POC who wanted to enjoy the outdoors for leisure, holistic practices, ceremonies, etc.

The land currently boasts a fully mapped out ATV trail, a catch-and-release fishing pond, cleared camping spots, and hiking trails. The Coble's are expanding on the area to include fully equipped cabins, a guest center available for rental, a sustainable community garden, and a ceremony/performance area.

In The Colorless Womb author Kimberly Gowdy tackles the topic of surrogacy and infertility head-on. The book encapsulates Gowdy’s early struggles to conceive and carry a child to term amidst misfortunes—seven failed pregnancy attempts, three surrogacy attempts, and being trapped in an abusive marriage with her former spouse who valued his drug addiction more than his wife. Her journey in search of alternative ways to have a family is confronted with racial and societal pressures of parenthood but after seven failed surrogacy attempts with only two embryos left, the biggest surprise comes in an unexpected package.

Gowdy’s openness to share her truth is refreshing and brings the reader along for an emotional ride sprinkled with humor, pain, encouragement, faith, and transparency. She proves that help in any form can come in unseen ways and people. “Since this is a true story, it was just a matter of telling my truth. The Colorless Womb shows that even with the racial tensions in our country, love is above racism. The person on the inside matters more than what is on the outside,” says Gowdy.

JI gives insight into how to reach that point in your life. If you have a dream, you must do the work, believe in yourself and your ability to get it done, against all odds. JI’s life experiences, both personal and professional will guide you on how to stay on your path, never someone else’s and how important it is to keep destructive people and thoughts that come your way… from getting in the way. Ignore the negative. Learning to deal with and embrace these experiences, constructively, is a part of who we are and who we become. Think ahead, visualize where you want to be and move towards that goal. JI’s faith and ability to stay focused through the years has made him a success and “Think Fearlessly” is a road map to that success. “Think Fearlessly” takes on issues that life brings to all of us. This past year has been a testament to that. The fears, isolation and uncertainty of the existing pandemic changed our lives. It’s important to step outside ourselves and know there is something bigger than ourselves, to cope. A very personal choice, but one that allows us to move forward. JI believes, “We are free to be the best we can be, whatever the circumstance.” Also, there is wisdom in the words of those who have led before us. Pay attention to the difference between negativity and support. “Think Fearlessly” helps readers through the noise and leads them to the peace.

Following the hit single “Summertime Ting” the rapper has been busy working on the release of “Silent Noise.” The Toronto rapper recently took control of his music, releasing under his own Triple L Music Group. D Chase, like all artist/ performers in these limiting times, looks forward to being back on stage and in front of his fans. First/Last responder Evan St. Fort, the Owner of St.Forts Funeral Home +Cremation, is a thriving black business owner in the North Miami Beach area. There has not been enough attention paid to the physical and mental toll that the pandemic is having on funeral directors. The numbers in South Florida are rising, and Evans St. Fort-Owner of St. Forts Funeral Home & Cremations in North Miami Beach, has seen it first hand. Funeral directors are often the forgotten frontline and last responder workers, as they too face a growing workload and the emotional toll it takes on them and their staff. He has navigated through one of the biggest challenges, meeting families' needs while staying within the CDC guidelines. He and his staff must make sense of these new and unfamiliar deaths and help guide the evolution in how we mourn them. At the same time, Evans and his staff are assisting the families in reimagining end-of-life rituals. Live-streaming funerals and archiving them digitally have become commonplace. While other cities provide the COVID-19 vaccine to funeral homeowners/staff, Florida has yet to put a plan in place for funeral homes here. The most challenging part of this Covid-19 pandemic has been keeping all clients and staff safe. Dealing with grieving families that have lost someone with the virus has not been easy. The most positive thing that I have experienced during this time is getting an opportunity to stop and spend time with family."
