Buy coffee from El Vergel Estates! The Bayter Family are at the forefront of coffee production in Colombia. That may sound hyperbolic, but it’s true. When their mother, Marta, took over ownership & operation of the El Vergel Estates in 2007 after their father passed away, she made sure that her sons would be ready to inherit the business when they came of age. In their late teens, Shady & Elias took on the responsibility of directing the farm’s coffee production and business relationships in consuming countries. Their elders and other members of their community insisted that the best way to make a living selling Colombian coffee was to grow commodity coffee in bulk and sell it at market value. The more volume, the better.

The Bayter brothers saw things differently, especially once they got their hands on a cup of specialty coffee. Now, after more than 10 years in the business and 400 hectares of farm land in their possession, they are boasting the exceptional fermentation processes that create the gorgeous cup we are experiencing right now in the Guava Banana. This process took more than two years (and many, many pounds of lost coffee) of trial and error to perfect… and they’re still iterating on every harvest with one goal in mind: to create the best cup of coffee in Colombia (then the world!).

Ron Grieco - Highlight Roast #006: Guava Banana

Ron Grieco - Highlight Roast #006: Guava Banana

Ron is our spiritual coffee godparent. Years before the Upstate Coffee Collective would prompt him to express his love for coffee in our Highlight Roast Series, Ron was dreaming up his ultimate café experience and spreading coffee education with his cohorts in the Capital Region Coffee Collective. Ron is a Coffee industry veteran and mentor. Part owner, Director of Coffee, Educator, and occasional barista of Stacks Espresso Bar in Albany, Ron is constantly flexing his coffee knowhow to the benefit of those around him.

Ron’s philosophy is simple: Care about people, and put your effort into that care. Over the years he’s matured as an individual, a business owner, and a coffee enthusiast, and the lesson he has imparted on us the most is to put people first.

Ron met Shady and Elias while he was literally IN SEARCH OF this very coffee! In fact, one could say that Ron, Shady, and Elias’ passions were manifestly united by this year’s first Highlight Roast.

From Brick & Mortar to E-Commerce w/ Ben from Process Coffee & Rad Stuff

From Brick & Mortar to E-Commerce w/ Ben from Process Coffee & Rad Stuff

Ben (we never got his last name but I kinda like it better?) is the creator of Process Coffee & Rad Stuff (process.coffee), a curated online store full of featured coffee & a small selection of brewing gear. Ben helped create a coffee shop called Guilt Trip Coffee that is quite well-known in the coffee scene, and he's now moved his entrepreneurial spirit from a brick & mortar shop to an online webstore! From his site:

"I'm Ben. A coffee professional and lover of rad stuff. Based in Belfast NI, and rocking a wife and 2 kids 😎 They make me suuuuper happy! I have been working in coffee for a while now. It's the best. The last 3 years have been spent as a co founder and project/general manager at a shop called Guilt Trip. I have also spent this time meeting, collaborating and creating with some of the raddest people I know.

With Process I want to connect people to this beautiful world of coffee, and tell stories as I work with brands and the people behind them. Everyone has a story to tell right?! And in the coffee world the stories are usually pretty interesting. On this new platform I want to offer a place of connection, a hub for collaboration and a destination for your higher level coffee experience. To help do this I have intentionally curated a supply of products that I think are awesome and rep worthy. It aint much, but I want this to all make sense. These are only the brands and products that I use, rate super highly, and love to shout about! I hope you're into them. Selling them also puts food on the table soooo that's kinda neat too"

Kenny Baker is the owner and operator of Ethnos Coffee Roasters out of Memphis, TN. After gaining significant exposure through his collaboration with cxffeeblack's Guji Mane project, Kenny's side hustle turned into a full time gig as he worked tirelessly to keep up with demand. A Conversation About Film, Comedy, Tiddies and Pens w/ Victoria Diana

A Conversation About Film, Comedy, Tiddies and Pens w/ Victoria Diana

Victoria Diana is a stand-up comedian, a writer, and a filmmaker in Upstate NY. In 2020 she won a $40,000 grant from the Central New York Short Film Competition, an arts-funded initiative by Empire State Development and sponsored by the CNY Arts/Innovation Group. She used that money to fund her short film called "Devour".

According to the article on oswego.edu:
[Victoria] Diana’s “Devour” is a drama following former lovers on different trajectories in ia chef who is about to close for the night at his struggling, once successful, restaurant, when an old flame shows up at his door,' Diana said. 'She is now a rising actress, who traveled up to Syracuse from NYC, in search of a familiar comfort.' Two of her friends, Kristin Noriega and Kevin Miner, presented Diana with the concept and which she immediately found exciting. “I love food, and the relationships people have with it. I also wanted to explore nostalgia, and the rose-colored tint it gives our memories,” Diana said. “For ‘Devour,’ I challenged myself by writing a drama (my comfort zone is comedy); but for fun, I went dialogue-crazy.”

Find Victoria doing bits on Tik Tok, reposting them on Instagram, and shit-posting on Facebook.

"You Can't Do Coffee Alone" - A Conversation w/ Carlos Sims Jr. of Happy Home Coffee Roasters

"You Can't Do Coffee Alone" - A Conversation w/ Carlos Sims Jr. of Happy Home Coffee Roasters

Oh man!! This might have been our favorite conversation yet. Carlos Sims Jr. is the owner & operator of Happy Home Coffee Roasters based out of Fenton, MI (soon to be Hilo, Hawai'i!). Happy Home is a family-centric, faith-centric, black-owned coffee roasting business whose mission is to "Cultivate Joy and Belonging". We talk about Carlos' journey from the hospitality industry, to the cafe scene, to taking the dive into his own business venture while being a husband and a father of three! All you need to know about our friend Carlos: When I asked him what he had to compromise on when launching the business (sleep, time with family, tight budget), he said "NO COMPROMISES." He puts his family and his faith before everything.

From their website:
Coffee can be used to provide Joy and Belonging. That’s why we named our company Happy Home. When you brew a cup of our coffee, our hope is that it would help you cultivate joy and belonging wherever you are. Whether you are brewing our coffee as you cook a family breakfast over the holidays, or you have brewed a pour over and are experiencing the diverse flavors that coffee has to offer, we hope that our coffee makes wherever you call home, happy.

Our personal fave of their offerings is a sweet Las Lajas Natural. Grab some here.

At the Shop Table w/ Marc Cunningham

Marc Cunningham is the host of "The Shop Table", a podcast formerly known as "Pass the Brew", where he and his guests talk about their passions in and out of the coffee world. From the podcast's description:
This Podcast started out as a way for me to talk about coffee and sports with people who didnt roll their eyes when I got too in depth about it. But as these things often do, it has evolved! Pass the Brew is a podcast that brings people involved in coffee together to talk about life, coffee, and what ever else may interest them. Sometimes thats sports, sometimes its lego, sometimes its Star Wars. Coffee is about community, and that is the aim of this podcast, to bring people together in community to have conversations. I hope that you enjoy these as much as I do!

"Comedians Are So Sad" w/ R&B Singer Natalie Carr

Natalie Carr (@nataliecarrmusic) is an up-and-coming American R&B singer-songwriter from North Carolina. Not only is she warm, welcoming, and down-to-earth in conversation, but she also has that fiery energy and soul needed to be something special in the music industry. We talk about the songwriting process, the double-edged sword that is the internet, the wonderful state of Connecticut (where both she and Matt happened to grow up) and her newly released singles. Find more of her on Spotify (or equivalent listening source) and on Youtube where she records acoustic sessions, "quick-writes", and covers. We're super stoked to have made a new friend and we can't wait to see what's next for her. Cheers, NattyDaddy!

From her bio:
"Based in Charlotte, by way [of] Stamford, Connecticut, Carr has an abundance of music influences. Considering herself a crossover artist, influences range from R&B, pop, indie, and even country music. While many may compare her to Halsey, Kehlani, or maybe even a "female Post Malone," many find themselves enthralled with her writing, and the way resonates with their day-to-day."
