5 Tips to Setting Manageable Goals
This is a bonus episode to acknowledge the new year. We have some tips to share when it comes to setting manageable goals. What better time to share them than the time of new year’s resolutions!
Here's a sneak peek of the 5 tips to Setting Manageable Goals:
- Identify how you currently set goals. What gets in your way about your current process? What works?
- Instead of diving right into your goals, try starting with your values. Identify a value that has been present for you lately and THEN come up with a goal that might satisfy it.
- List all of the things you can do to meet this goal. No step is too small.
- Identify what other values might be at play in achieving your goal. Are there any that could get frustrated? Others that might get satisfied?
- Notice your thoughts, emotions, and behaviour as you're completing this exercise (and when you're taking steps to achieve this goal). As you’re writing down or imagining your goal, what’s coming up? Use this information to let you know how 'hot' or 'cold' you are in coming up with a goal that you will actually want to achieve.

Marketing and Values: A Dissonance Resolved!
Consider this episode a model for one way to check in to see if you're living your values in business.
Coreen and I have struggled for years to add a values based lens to our marketing. We've been chipping away at it incrementally, but recently we had a breakthrough around our marketing vision and thought it would be fun and insightful to record our values assessment of our new marketing vision. We don't necessarily share what our marketing plan is in this episode (mostly to keep you from the monotony of it); instead, we review our business and personal values to see to what extent we're in alignment with our updated marketing strategy and offer some examples.
This episode is for people who want to see what it's like to weave values into an initiative like marketing, or for people who want to know more about the values of Values Based Living and of us:).
VBL Values:
Teamwork, Get ‘er done, Authenticity, Meaning, Fun/Joy, Community, Measurable High Value Content for Participants, Simplicity/Ease, Playing Big
Note: We reference a marketing resource, Tad Hargrave with Marketing For Hippies, as a big reason why we're making great strides in our marketing. We're not getting anything tangible for pumping him up, we just like what he does:).

Compulsive Lying and Values: The 7 Sacred Teachings (Part 2)
Coreen and Ali are so grateful to have access to the Seven Sacred Teachings and to be able to refer to them as a guide. They each picked a teaching that lines up with one of their values. In this episode (Part 2), Coreen describes how the teaching of TRUTH was incredibly helpful in navigating her relationship with a compulsive liar.
See part 1 in the previous episode for Ali's example, in which she shares how the teaching of LOVE helped get her through a messy and painful business partner separation. We recommend starting with this episode, as it touches on what the Seven Sacred Teachings are and why they are so important to Values Based Living.

Gifts, Parenting, Shadow and Values
This is sort of a continuation of episode 7 called "Values and Birthdays", so feel free to listen to that one first if you want to hear the full story.

Birthdays and Values
Coreen never liked to celebrate her birthday, until she got into better relationship with her values. We go into what, how, and why. We also speak generally about what values can be at play when we observe our relationship with our birthdays. Many of us have 'hang-ups' around our birthdays. Sometimes we believe that how we celebrate that day reflects the value of the whole year. Sometimes we insist that our birthday not be mentioned at all, let alone celebrated. Why do we care so much about one symbolic day? Coreen and Ali tug on a thread of the larger web.

Dating and Values
We talk about how easy it can be to throw away our values when we get into a new and exciting relationship, AND conversely how easy it can be to jump to conclusions and assume the other person's seemingly opposite values mean you aren't right for each other. “I once dreamt I was telling stories and felt someone patting my foot in encouragement. I looked down and saw that I was standing on the shoulders of an older woman who was steadying my ankles and smiling up at me. I said to her, "no no come stand on my shoulders, For you are old and I am Young." "No no" she insisted, "this is the way it is supposed to be." I saw that she stood on the shoulders of a woman far older than she, who stood on the shoulders of a woman even older, who stood on the shoulders of a woman in robes, who stood on the shoulders of another soul, who stood on the shoulders...” ― Clarissa Pinkola Estés, Women Who Run With the Wolves
