Episode 50: Steve Van Bockern
On today's podcast, a former teacher and school principal, Dr. Steve Van Bockern is an eminent academic known for reaching out to the community. Van Bockern and his colleagues pioneered the incorporation of Indigenous perspectives and wisdoms with contemporary psychological research. He is renowned for his work with at-risk youth as well as with gifted children.
In 1990, Van Bockern co-authored the book Reclaiming Youth at Risk: Our Hope for the Future, which has had a worldwide impact on educators working with marginalized young people. It has sold more than 300,000 copies and has been translated into four languages.

This week's episode features WHS Activities Director and former State Champion Girls Basketball Coach Nate Malchow. Coach Malchow sits down with us to talk about his sports-driven upbringing in Aberdeen, SD, memories and mentors throughout his coaching experiences, as well as his battle after a Lymphoma diagnosis in 2018. We round out the episode by drafting our Top 5 Sports Movie Coaches.
Ep. 37 - Carla Middlen
Former Washington High School Principal and long-time educator Carla Middlen comes on the show to tell the story behind what it took to save the "Warrior" name. Carla played a crucial role in gathering the blessing of tribal members, and coordinated and created what we now call our Circle of Courage. Carla displays her love and passion for WHS after voicing what it's like having her children as well has her grandchildren wear the orange and black.
Ep.36 - King Angok Akot & Queen Ellie Walker
This week we caught up with the 2021 WHS Homecoming King and Queen Angok Akot & Ellie Walker. These two individuals are outstanding Warriors who truly represent the Circle of Courage, and all of its pillars. Angok and Ellie have been people who make others feel welcome, and are always willing to lend a helping hand to those in need. We learn about each of their travels before landing at WHS, as well as some of their favorite memories they've made in their time as a Warrior.
Ep. 35 - CHEERS TO SEASON 3
We have officially made it to a third season! Grant and I wanted to make sure to use this episode to kick out a couple of podcast announcements, as well as give some life updates for each of us. We are looking forward to having some great guests on the show, and bring you stories of how they live life The Warrior Way.
Ep. 34 - Faux Washington Fans Twitter Reveal
This week we did a LIVE reveal with the creators of the Faux Washington Fans Twitter account. This account has been notorious on Twitter the past 3 years being live at WHS sporting events, with only a couple people knowing their identity. Their account is coming to an end, and you're in for a BIG surprise as to who runs the account. I know they sure surprised me... hear it now!
Ep. 33 - Steve Sivertson
This week I caught up with longtime teacher and Spirit of WHS Award Winner Steve Sivertson. Steve has been an instramental part of our WHS culture, and we will be sad to see him retire at the conclusion of this school year. Steve has taught many groups of students, but found his passion teaching our ELL population. Steve has also worked at many activities in the Metro Area, and has witnessed many great sports moments as you'll hear. We round it out by drafting our Top 5 MLB Ballparks to watch a game.
Ep. 32 - Jeff Herbert
This we caught up with a man that many call "Mr. Washington"... 1974 WHS Grad Jeff Herbert. This was a very special episode as we got to record with Jeff at the Washington Pavillion, in a classroom that may have looked a lot like the one he sat in when he attended. Jeff talks about his family ties to the building, the memories that he holds on to dearly, and how his education shaped him into the man he continues to be today.

This week, WHS English Teacher and Head Football Coach Ryan Evans joins the show to talk about his journey that has led him to WHS. Starting off in a small town and now taking over a big football program here at WHS. Evans talks about his most important pillars to his program, along with how they navigated this past season. We cap it off by drafting out Top 5 Major Sporting Events to attend.
Ep. 30 - Mapenzi Bukuru and Luis Perez Perez
WHS Sophomore Mapenzi Bukuru and Junior Luis Perez Perez join the show this week. Coming from far different parts of the world, they learn under one roof at WHS, and they have a couple incredible stories to tell. Mapenzi grew up in Africa, while Luis in Guatemala, and they are both new to the English language. They did a great job of sharing why they love WHS, and really represent what WHS is all about.
Ep. 29 - Tim Reck
Good friend of ours Tim Reck joins the show this week. Tim is a longtime coach who has been at both Roosevelt and Washington and just recently accepted the job to become the first ever Head BBB Coach at Jefferson High School. Tim shares some of his best memories of his time at WHS, and how he made it a point to make sure each person he coaches feel valued and respected.

This week i'm joined by my good friend Roberta Bennett. Roberta is the Success Coordinator at WHS who works with our most at-risk population of students. Roberta is a graduate of WHS and has a passion and a heart for people, as you'll hear in this episode. She's also an avid golfer, so we cap off our conversation with our Top 5 people we'd like to play a round of golf with.

This week we welcome the Director of Choral Activities Jeff Spencer and WHS Senior Molly Adams to discuss the WHS Choir program in great length. We talk about the family atmosphere it provides as well as how it makes students of all ability levels feel engaged and involved. We wrap up this weeks' episode by drafting our Top 5 National Anthem Performances.
Ep. 26 - Tahj Two Bulls
WHS Senior Tahj Two Bulls joins the show this week fresh off the conclusion of basketball season. Tahj landed at WHS as a sophomore as he transferred from Lower Brule, and has really found a way to make an impact. As you'll hear, Tahj is reserved and thoughtful with his words, but he tells a great story about his journey up to this point in his life.
Ep. 25 - GBB Head Coach Jamie Parish
Coach Parish joins the show fresh off the WHS GBB 2020-21 State Championship this past weekend. We talk about the season as a whole, and even take it back to when the 2019-20 season got shut down right before the state tournament. We spend a majority of our time reflecting on this past weekend, and getting each others thoughts on certain moments throughout. We round out the episode by drafting our Top 5 Pump-up Songs!

Mrs. Terhorst joins the show to talk all things WHS, her awesome department, and why she loves teaching Psychology. Ali talks about QUINNcidence Day and all that it means to her, along with winning the Milken Educator Award and how she had ZERO clue that she was going to receive it!
Ep. 23 - WHS Senior Lauren Mitchell
This week we sat down with an avid follower of the show, Senior Lauren Mitchell. Lauren is a young lady who has found a strong sense of belonging at WHS through he involvement in the highly successful WHS Cheer Program, as well as through the relationships she has build with her teachers and peers. Lauren and I finish up our conversation by drafting our Top 5 Breakfast Foods.
Ep. 22 - "Just the Two of Us"
In the craziness that this time of year is as teachers, coaches and most of all HUSBANDS/DADS, we took a week just to catch up with each other. We chat about teaching, coaching, and being dad's while also reflecting a little on our first 21 episodes. We round it out with a draft of our Top 5 Childhood Toys.

This week we catch up with English teachers Justin Heyd & Wade Kippley... we touch on their travels before WHS as well as what they believe separates this place from the others. This week we caught up with WHS Seniors Chris Harris & Jaden Feterl. These two about their WHS experience, how it's prepared them for their next steps, and Jaden goes into detail about the Spanish Immersion program that he was a part of.
Ep. 19 - WHS Head Volleyball Coach Kelly Schroeder
Coach Schroeder talks to us about his volleyball program and how different it was this past season as well as how we at WHS strive to build multi-sport athletes. We finish it out by drafting our Top 5 Concerts we would like to attend all-time.
Ep. 18 - WHS JROTC Members Charles Reeves, Rickie Le & Grady Lewis
Three current Warriors join the show to talk about the JROTC program, and how it has helped them find a sense of belonging at WHS. Mrs. Papke joins the show to talk about taking over as a first year lead principal during a pandemic, the incredible things she's witnessed from teachers while dropping-in classrooms, and her vision moving forward for WHS. We round it out by drafting our Top 5 LEAST favorite words during Covid-19.
Ep. 14 - Jack Talley
2017 WHS Grad and Jamestown Senior Jack Talley joins the show to finish off season one. Jack talks about how different experiences have helped him grow as a person, including WHS, a trip to Kenya, and his passion for reading. Jack and I talk basketball as his season ramps up, and we cap it off with drafting our Top 5 people we would like to sit down and have a conversation with.

Ep. 9 - Rahele Megosha
This week we sat down with WHS senior Rahele Megosha. Rahele is a first-generation English speaker with an amazing story. She is currently in the process of applying to colleges such as UPENN, Brown, Yale, and MIT. She talks about the battles of discrimination and the fight for representation, and all the great things that WHS has brought her.
Ep. 8 - Sydni Schetnan
WHS Senior and University of Louisville VB & GBB Recruit Sydni Schetnan sat down with us to talk about her long family lineage at WHS, how she's grown in confidence since freshman year, and the joys and stresses of college recruitment.
