Asian Enough MV https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u9_yrqlbb6k

Today we have Chara Kai-Le, singer-songwriter/producer based in Toronto, Canada. She recently released her song, Asian Enough that I came across that I relate to a lot. The song speaks to the feelings of many third culture kids on whether or not they are "Asian Enough" or should that even be a thing?

In our conversation, we found out about Chara's background of moving around everywhere when she was a kid, living in England facing racism and culture shock that lead her to be quite pro-Asian and kind of Anti-White and how music was the thing that saved her when she was younger. Last but not least, we got into talking about Chara's creative journey and her road to being an independent singer-songwriter/producer trying to make it in Toronto while the world is going through the pandemic and all the social unrest. We definitely talked about her song, Asian Enough as well.

Please support Chara and her music as it's always great to see Asian creatives pursuing their passion in the arts and given how she is creating content that really speaks to third culture kids makes her even more awesome.

Support HATE IS A VIRUS, a cause That Daniel mentioned on the podcast and supports!

"Hate Is A Virus is a nonprofit community of mobilizers and amplifiers to dismantle racism and hate.  A movement started in 2020, Hate Is A Virus continues to amplify, educate and activate AAPI to stand for justice and equality in solidarity with other communities"

Chinese Adoptee. Physical Disability. Creative Asian. One that uses his voice for things that matter. That's how Daniel would describe himself as. And I feel that he's definitely using his voice for things that matter given what he does.

So for those that does not know, Daniel is a Chinese adoptee from Beijing but was raised in America by a white family. He came into my radar when I joined Asian Creative Network, a Facebook group dedicated to Asians who dare to break the mold. The Asian Creative Network connects and empowers Asian creatives by providing an inclusive, global platform and resources for active community building, collaboration, and growth. Daniel is one of the moderators of the group and shows a lot of support to the creatives in the group (including myself) building a very safe and encouraging community. The group has over 47+k members right now!

Our conversation focused on Daniel himself as is he usually more focused on sharing other people's stories and creative projects rather than talking about himself. He is also not that big on social media in his personal life so it's a bit strange how he moderates such a big online digital community for Asian creatives.

Our conversation topics:

-His background and his Chinese adoptee experience especially with discussing race and the whole Anti-Asian Hate issue with his white family.

-How he became a moderator to such big Asian digital communities first with Subtle Asian Dating and now Asian Creative Network?

-What does moderating/building online digital communities mean?

-How is it like to moderate such a big digital community?

-His creativity and what he likes.

-Him being a voice in helping platform, spotlighting and serving the Asian Diaspora.

She also talked about how she does not care if any KPOP groups or musicians makes it in the West (We don't need white people to like KPOP). Ewen is an Internet friend of mine that I hope to be able to meet one day (once Covid is over *fingers crossed*). The reason being, is that he is someone that I share a lot of similar experiences with and someone I relate a lot to.

Ewen is a CBC (Canadian Born Chinese) of Cantonese background with parents being from Hong Kong that immigrated to Canada during the 80s/90s period. Ewen is a Diaspora Asian with a linguistic background and passion for Cantonese (his heritage language).

In our conversation, we talked about being CBC living in the area of Canada with a lot of Cantonese speakers and a lot about our diaspora feelings. We got into the discussion of preserving our heritage language (Cantonese) as Diaspora and what he plans to do with the Ontario Cantonese Heritage Language curriculum. Also, we touched on our motherland, Hong Kong, and all that is happening there (protest, social unrest, government issues, etc). To end it off, we talked about our favourite Hong Kong foods!

My guest today is Emery Fung, a Hong Kong-born, native English and Cantonese speaker who has lived in the UK for over 10 years. His joy so far has been in working with people. His skills are in building a community, foresting relationships, business development, research and pitching. Outside of his professional life, he is a LGBT advocate, Social Media Junkie and Sports fanatic. He can be found playing football, hockey or wake-surfing across Hong Kong! Last but not least, he is a podcaster with a podcast called Awkward Turtle, a podcast exploring today’s social norms with a twist, alongside some pretty bad jokes.

In today's episode we talked about:

-His UK boarding school experience; he went to the UK for school on his own when he was 9 years old

-How his relationship was/is with his parents that he didn't really get to see while he was in boarding school outside of major holidays when he went back to Hong Kong

-How he feels about his identity given how he is now back in Hong Kong after being away for so long

-Racism

-Hong Kong/Cantonese food and cuisine

-His podcast

Today I talked to Joanne Van, a digital marketer with an ethnic Chinese Vietnamese-American background that was born and raised in America.  Her parents were born and raised in Vietnam (Diaspora Asians in their own right) that identifies more with being Chinese than Vietnamese. The interesting part of this would be that both Joanne and her parents actually never step foot in China. We went into the reasons why Joanne’s parents felt like this and how that contributed to Joanne’s own journey with her identity and cultural understanding of her own Chinese-Vietnamese culture mixed in with her Asian American identity. Joanne is also one that is very into Asian culture/media and we go into why that is and what she gets out of that. We also talked about her passion for creativity and business that led her to her career in digital and social media marketing. We talked about how her parents took that as it is not your normal career path. Last, we also talked about KPOP as Joanne is part of a company that is heavily involved in the KPOP music industry/community. She recommended a few KPOP acts to check out as well. Guest: Maxwell Lee

At various stages in life he has been a professional musician, the general manager of a non-profit performing arts organization, a college professor, a full-time real estate investor and a city planning consultant. He is now focusing on sharing all of these passions through content creation, with his various YouTube channels, blogs and podcasts. In this episode, I had a conversation with Maxwell Lee about his experience as a Malaysian Chinese American growing up in Florida and his journey from being a music major in university to becoming involved in the music industry, to then becoming a real estate investor and finally to being involved in music and content creation (his true passion) again after years of leaving it behind. We covered things like his Asian American identity, how he spent a lot of his life doing what made sense to his family and to society without really thinking about himself and how he went through all that but is now going back to what he loves doing most which is music and content creation. Last, we talked about his future plans with relocating to Asia with his wife and kids. EP 19 ADULTING IN 2021 FT. GAVIN AND JESS (SIBT.CA)

Guests: Gavin and Jess (@auyeunggavin) (@hijessing)

Chinese Born Canadians

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

On this episode, I brought my good friend Gavin back on the podcast along with his girlfriend Jess. I have them on the podcast to talk about the process of growing up or "adulting" in 2021 as millennials being in their late 20s.  The reason I decided to talk about this is because of them being new homeowners in Canada during the pandemic after less than 6 months of planning is such an "adulting" move in my opinion. We also got into "fengshui" when looking for houses, our love languages and how we communicate with our partners.  And the most juicy part of the podcast would be about how their relationship started and what are the future plans for them moving forward now that Jess is a homeowner (proposal, marriage, wedding, etc???).

Last, Gavin and Jess host their own podcast together called, Should I Buy This? a podcast where they ask their girlfriend/boyfriend if they should buy this product. It's a fun listen and can give you some suggestions on what to buy yourself.

It's a fun one so make sure to listen and follow them and listen to their podcast Should I Buy This?.

She gives a good perspective on the Asian Muslim culture/identity and talks about the misconceptions people from the West have of Islam and the Muslim communities in Asia.  If you want to understand more about Islam and the Asian Muslim communities, make sure to tune in to this episode and also follow and listen to Doctor Aiman on her own podcast which goes further into the Asian Muslim experience.  Thanks for listening!

12-HOW TO HAVE A BETTER RELATIONSHIP WITH YOUR IMMIGRANT PARENTS? FT. TINA (@TTINAAT)

Ep 12 TINA - CONSULTANT/DANCER/YOUTUBER/CREATOR - CHINESE-AUSTRALIAN (@ttinaat)

Tina is a Chinese-Australian that immigrated to Australia with her parents when she was 8. She is a consultant full time and a content creator (Youtube) on the side as a hobby.

In today’s episode, I talked to Tina about her passion topic, our relationships to our parents as children of Asian poc immigrants. We specifically talked about how Diaspora Asians can have a better relationship with their immigrant parents? For context, Tina feels that she has a pretty good relationship with her parents and would love to share her thoughts on how to do so and help others that are trying to improve their relationships with their own parents.

Is it through listening and doing everything they tell you to do? Is it to try to explain your side of the story to them in the best way possible? OR, is it just to treat your parents like regular human beings that had lives before kids and try to understand where they are coming from? Listen and you will find out!

We also talked about Tina’s creative pursuits with dancing and also now creating content on Youtube. She is an aspiring lifestyle Youtuber trying to make all sorts of different content and learning the craft. It is very cool, you should definitely check her out and subscribe to her channel!

3.2-ASIAN MEN TALKING ABOUT MENTAL HEALTH AND THEIR FEELINGS FT. ROBIN (@CONROC)

WHAT KIND OF ASIAN ARE YOU? PODCAST S1E3 PART 2

Another episode with my good friend Robin (@conroc) where we continued to have deep talks. We talked a lot about mental health, seeking out therapy/professional health to help with figuring out what to do when feeling lost and not having direction in life during our adulthood. This podcast episode was all about feelings and talking about feelings which men in general are pretty bad at doing, so it was nice Robin and I were able to talk about our feelings to each so freely. We also talked about growing up in and Asian family in the west and about being old and how we still got to get out of our comfort zone in order to grow and improve. It was a great conversation, so don't miss out and listen to it!

We went pretty deep again so make sure to listen to the whole episode. And if you want to follow Robin, check him out on Instagram at @conroc. And if you want to follow me on Instagram, you can at @kyle.lkhhk.

Again thank you so much for listening and supporting the podcast. I really appreciate it. I hope you enjoy this episode and make sure to share with your people if you find this entertaining and valuable. Now here is WHAT KIND OF ASIAN ARE YOU? PODCAST S1E3.1 FEATURING ROBIN.

3.1-STAND YOUR GROUND AND TALK YOUR SHIT! FT. ROBIN (@CONROC)

WHAT KIND OF ASIAN ARE YOU? PODCAST S1E3 PART 1.

I am back with another episode and this is going to be a very very special one. I have my good friend Robin on the podcast this episode to just shoot the shit with me. It was such a good time that we recorded over 3 hours of podcast material. That’s crazy when I usually just record 1 hour at most with my guests. So this is why our recording will be split into 2 parts. And this is part 1 of my conversation with Robin. To give you a brief intro of Robin, he’s a good friend of mine that I came to know from Jack from DIU Podcast. Robin is an all around creative guy that does so much creative stuff. He likes to Bboy, rap, make music, podcast, design, and pretty much anything that allows him to be creative. He is someone all about the feel good vibes and doing dope shit. In part 1 of our conversation we talk a lot about, social media and the good and the bad of it, how we need to not look at everything just on the surface level and be sure to ask questions, being confrontational and standing your ground when white people mess with you, Robin’s childhood where Asians were not cool and what got him into Hip Pop with MC Jin being his inspiration, freestyle battling people at school and how Filipinos are just so trendy all the time.

We went pretty deep and we still have so much to cover in part 2 of our conversation so make sure to stay tuned for that when it drops. And if you want to follow Robin, check him out on Instagram at @conroc. And if you want to follow me on Instagram, you can at @kyle.lkhhk.

WHAT KIND OF ASIAN ARE YOU? PODCAST - PRE OFFICIAL EP2 (INTRODUCTION OF ANOTHER NEW PODCAST)

WHAT KIND OF ASIAN ARE YOU? PODCAST - PRE OFFICIAL EP2 (INTRODUCTION OF ANOTHER NEW PODCAST)

It's been a while. I promised more pre-official episodes and here is one for y'all. In this one, I update you on what's been happening in my life and also announcing that I have a new podcast in addition to What Kind of Asian Are You? Podcast that I'll be doing with my good friend, Jack, fellow podcaster of DIU Podcast, that he does with his podcast partner, Gavin. The new podcast is going to be entirely in Cantonese, Jack and I's mother tongue. We will talk about the Cantonese language, Cantonese culture, and our experience living in the West as Diaspora Asians. So if you are interested, please check it out on diupod.com when it comes out. It will come out by the time this episode is released.

So here I present you a clip from the first Cantonese podcast episode I recorded with Jack. Enjoy!
