Ep. 106 || Alia Dahlan || Alumna

Ep. 106 || Alia Dahlan || Alumna

Today on the podcast, I sit down with 2019 alumna Alia Dahlan.  Alia is a financial analyst for Barclays in Manhattan.  Barclays is one of the top 10 largest investment banks in the world and is similar to some other names you may have heard like Goldman Sachs, JP Morgan, and Morgan Stanley.  When Alia was a student not that long ago, she took advantage of nearly everything that the WCOB had to offer her - she was a Walker Fellow, Holland Fellow, member of the Bowden Investment Group, member of the Women of Walker, and so many more things. She has some great advice for folks new to the workplace as she has just completed her first year working with her team partially in her office in time square as well as remotely for several months now.  In this episode she gives new employees some advice about connecting with their team, but I will let her tell you more about that herself.  So, without further ado, here is my conversation with Alia.
Tips from Alia:

  1. Know how your team likes to be communicated with.
  2. Get to know your team first thing - it's awkward if you try to do it later.
  3. Never be afraid to ask questions.

Ep. 105 || Krystal Donohue || United Rentals

Today on the podcast, I sit down with Krystal Donohue, a sales and management recruiter for United Rentals.  She has worked for United Rentals for quite some time and has held several roles there.  During our conversation, Krystal was kind enough to talk us through some of the most minute details of the interview and virtual interview process.  She spoke to the types of things she likes to see on LinkedIn, what she likes to hear in an interview, what she doesn’t like to see when interacting with a candidate and so much more.  If you are finding yourself scared for your first interview or preparing for your thousandth interview, I know you’ll find something helpful in what she has to say.  So, without further ado, here is my interview with Krystal.

Ep. 100 | What's After This? Trailer

Hi folks! Thank you again for joining for the very first episode of the What’s After This? Podcast with Business Career Services.  In this short intro episode I want to take some time to introduce myself, give you some background about why and how this podcast came to be, and finally give you a little context for the time and place we are releasing this podcast.

First, my name is Annie Love, and I am an Assistant Director in the Business Career Services office in the Walker College of Business at Appalachian State University. Whew, that is a mouthful! If you are listening and unfamiliar with Business Career Services, we are a Center in the Walker College of Business dedicated to helping undergraduate and graduate business students explore opportunities for internships, practicums, jobs, service year opportunities, and graduate school opportunities and then help them get there! If you are a WCOB student,or alumni we can be found in Peacock Hall, but also remotely at businesscareers.appstate.edu.  On our website, we have a catalogue of resources for you to access at any time, information about our events, and a place to schedule an appointment with a career coach.  We hope you will come find us soon!

So, you may be wondering why we chose to start a podcast.  Well, in short, this podcast came to be as a result of a project I’ve been working on to help students and alumni navigate the new challenges of virtual and remote professionalism.  As I set out to do this, I quickly realized that I did not have enough wisdom, information, and know-how to create this resource on my own.  I thought about how some of the most valuable resources we have for students are our employer panels during Business Connections and our Professional Development Series - this is oftentimes where the good stuff is.  But how do we put this type of resource into students’ hands (or ears) remotely and accessible anytime?  And that, folks, is how “What’s After This?” was born.  In the Walker College of Business, we have a wealth of experts in our network - from alumni to employers and recruiters to our very own faculty.  When I sent out some feelers for interest in this, I received nothing but excitement to contribute, and I am so excited to share my interviews with you here.

Finally, to give a little context to the timing of this podcast, the year is 2020 and we all find ourselves in the midst of a global pandemic.  Every part of life looks different for everyone, and the workplace is no different.  With an unprecedented amount of employees working from home, we know that the workplace atmosphere has likely been changed forever, and the ways we have been coaching students for years may no longer be up-to-date with this “new normal”.

So, we hope that this new resource will prove to be a screen break for your eyes as well as a resource straight from our expert network.
