Episode 6: Bradley's Story of a DNA Secret and How Families Are Impacted by Unexpected Genetic Discoveries

On Episode 6 of the When Family Hurts Podcast, Rebekah chats with friend and colleague, Bradley Hall, about his own unexpected DNA surprise.

They discuss what it feels like to make an NPE (not parent expected) discovery after taking an at-home DNA test, navigating confusing family dynamics, how this discovery impacts families and what to do if you're contacted by someone claiming to be a genetic relation. Other mental health themes also take a deep dive including identity disruption, empathy, forgiveness and trauma, living with a victim mentality and toxic family patterns.

Episode 1: Darren's Story of Betrayal Trauma, Psychological and Physical Abuse

On Episode 1 of When Family Hurts, Rebekah is joined by Dr. Darren Slade.

*Trigger Warning*

Through his compelling story of intense violence, trauma and abuse, Darren shares a raw, intimate look into his childhood and the ramifications which carried into adulthood. At the hands of family, Darren was beaten, kidnapped and psychologically manipulated, but yet his mind and quest for knowledge spurred him to seek a different life. Included is Darren's intimate telling of his divorce and experience with single-parenting.

About Darren:
Dr. Slade is a theological historian, systematician, and critical rationalist philosopher from Denver, Colorado. Specializing in the socio-political development of religious belief systems, historic-speculative theology, and theoretical metaphysics, Darren's academic publications include topics ranging from the philosophy of religion, ancient Near Eastern and Second-Temple hermeneutical practices, church and Islamic history, the psychology of religion, and misotheism.

As a critical rationalist, Dr. Slade emphasizes the elimination of a confirmation bias through the use of logical argumentation, verificationism, and falsificationism. He maintains that a belief is ontologically true only if it is internally coherent, consistent with known facts, and possesses explanatory power or problem-solving capacity.
