Episode 3: Introducing the UK Modern Slavery Act 2015 series part 3. Section 54 - Transparency in Supply Chains
Andrew Smith Introduces Cristina Talens, Director of the Wilberforce Institute, Risk Assessment Unit. In this episode, Cristina talks about Section 54 - Transparency in Supply Changes.
Section 54 of the Modern Slavery Act 2015 requires businesses with an annual turnover of 36 million or more to publish a 'slavery and human trafficking statement' (MSA statement) every year.
· Organisations are not required by the act to implement any strategy to combat slavery in their supply chain, they are well within their rights to publicly state that they are doing nothing to combat slavery within their supply chain
· According to tiscreport.org/there are 5,448 UK companies required to comply for which they could not find a statement
· Although there is a threat of an unlimited fine for non-compliance, 7 years after the introduction of the Act no companies have received a fine

Episode 2: Introducing the UK Modern Slavery Act 2015 series part 2. Section 45 - The Statutory Defence for Victims
Andrew Smith talks to Dr Alicia Kidd about Section 45 of the Modern Slavery Act 2015 (UK).
Potential victims of modern slavery may be suspected or accused of committing criminal offences. Section 45 of the Modern Slavery Act 2015 provides for a statutory defence for adult and child victims who have been forced, threatened, or deceived into committing certain crimes by their exploiters.

Alicia talks about:
- The defence does not apply to the most serious crimes, such as sexual offences or offences involving serious violence.
- No quantitative data is collected on Section 45 so it’s difficult to get an accurate idea of when it is being used.
- There is still a lot of confusion around criminal exploitation with lots of examples of judges giving victims prison sentences while acknowledging that they were victims of MS
