Will This Be On The Test?

This week, Austin talks about the Comics Code Authority, which censored comic books for over 50 years, and Mattie talks about the bystander effect, a psychological phenomenon discovered after the murder of Kitty Genovese. (P.S. The Kitty Genovese story is full of LIES!)  Did you ever wonder why comic books are considered "for kids?" Somehow, the witch trials is the less depressing story this week. Mattie covers the story of Tituba, who you may remember from reading/Sparknoting The Crucible in high school English, and how we were grossly misled about how much of a baller she was. Austin discusses the Radium Girls, our first listener suggestion (from Pliny the Elder himself!). It is the worst story ever and you should definitely listen to it. Overall, a week of badass women, weak-ass men, and the horrible things humanity does to itself. Huzzah! Oh, and for some reason, dinosaurs come up again. Always.

In celebration of our favorite holiday, Halloween, we bring you a themed episode! Austin discusses the friendship, rivalry, possible murder plot, and the supernatural beliefs of Harry Houdini and Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. Mattie also goes into true crime we mislearned in school with poisoned or otherwise tampered-with Halloween candy. We also apologize for saying Mozart was one of the greatest musicians of all time. We now see that it is truly Kanye West. 

On this episode, Mattie delves into mislearned psychology with a discussion of Left Brain and Right Brain, and Austin talks about Mozart's love of butts. Or hatred of butts? It's hard to tell. Either way, this episode is not for the faint of heart!

It also turns out that Austin doesn't really know 90's boybands, so Mattie had to kill him, and now you have to listen to a ghost. 

Will This Be On the Test? is all about the topics we didn't quite learn in school, and we're excited to share this information with you! Also, if you are an *NSync fan, you are correct.

In celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month, we talk about Cesar Chavez and Mendez v Westminster. Chavez got the Karens to stop buying grapes! Children proved adults wrong! We give Lin-Manuel Miranda an idea for his next musical! And our cats, our dear cats, need to stop interrupting us.

Will This be on the Test? is a podcast where we try to learn things we didn't learn in school. Neither of us was lucky enough to learn very much about Hispanic or Latinx history during our K-12 years. This was enlightening, infuriating, and inspiring. We strive to know more than we know now, and we try to not pretend we know more than we do. We hope you learn something, too.

On this week's episode, we get super loopy while talking about the staged naval battles--some of them INSIDE the Colosseum!--from Roman times and The Franklin Expedition's most excellent mummies. Our cat also makes an appearance. Be sure to listen for his epic purring!
