Ep113 - Masterclass - Skin Checks: What and Why?
Many wellbeing leaders struggle with the notion that many of their wellbeing program engagements throughout the year are only engaged in by the “healthiest” employees, or those that arguably may be already proactively looking after their own health and wellbeing.
In Australia and New Zealand, 2 out of 3 people will be diagnosed with skin cancer by the age of 70.
This is a harrowing statistic, and given our affinity in these countries to embracing the outdoors, sport, beaches, the clean air and open spaces, it is clear that prevention and protection against skin cancer is vitally important.
While we are dropping a few stats, there is data that we have gathered at Pinnacle Health Group, in relation to the employee skin cancer checks that we deliver. And its a doozy:
Of the employees that undergo a skin cancer check with Pinnacle at their workplace -for up to 71 percent of these people - it is their first ever skin cancer check they've had conducted.
To put this in simpler terms, if these employees didn't have a skin cancer check arranged with their workplace, they simply would not have had their skin checked for suspicious lesions, spots to watch, and of course, cancers.
Skin Cancer Checks are our most popular employee health check, and with the pending Spring and Summer seasons approaching quickly, we feel that it’s a super-important time to share our knowledge and advice, to ensure that workplaces can effectively deliver skin cancer checks moving forward.
In this interactive and practical workshop delivered by Trent Marsh, National Health and Wellbeing Manager you will learn:
The background of employee skin cancer checks, and what the most popular skin cancer checks entail
The logistics, considerations, and planning process to delivering a highly engaged workplace skin check program
The importance of awareness and communication in order to engage employees in skin cancer checks
How skin cancer checks can be delivered for the hybrid workforce
How to inspire employees from all health backgrounds to get regular check ups
And how to use the skin check program data obtained in checks to guide decision making on your overall employee wellbeing program
This one-hour session is interactive and suitable for leaders in HR, Health and Wellbeing or Health and Safety, or team leaders looking to inspire their team to healthy change.
This 30 minute Masterclass, delivered by Josh Lambert, is interactive and suitable for people in HR, or Health, Safety and Wellbeing professionals in large organisations, government teams, those working in mid-tier businesses and even small business owners.
Ep112 - Resilience and the Workplace with Jess Ekserdjian and Sophie Curtis
Today, we're joined by Jess Ekserdjian and Sophie Curtis, clinical psychologists and co-founders of Enso Workplace Wellbeing. Their extensive experience in public mental health and private practice has honed their focus on workplace wellbeing and resilience.
Resilience, for Jess and Sophie, is not just about bouncing back from adversity but thriving during stability. They emphasise the pivotal role of mindset, employing psychological frameworks like CBT and self-compassion.
Their workshops empower individuals to identify and reframe negative thoughts, leading to tangible improvements in workplace wellbeing and performance. They stress the importance of open dialogues on workplace wellbeing and have found active employee engagement to be a powerful tool. The pandemic has underscored the relevance of resilience, making it a post-COVID buzzword. Jess and Sophie recommend organisations measure the impact of resilience programs on both employees and workplace culture.
Looking ahead, they foresee a sustained focus on workplace resilience and wellbeing, recognising its pivotal role in organisational success. This emphasis will be critical for organisations navigating the evolving landscape of work.

Ep108 - Masterclass: Psychosocial Support in the Workplace
If you work in the workplace wellbeing, health and safety or human resources space, chances are you have heard a lot lately around “Psychosocial Risk” and “Psychosocial Support”.
The development of new workplace regulations in Australia has strengthened workplace health and safety laws, to better address risks to workplace psychological health. This has meant that workplace stakeholders have needed to improve education and awareness related to psychosocial hazards, to minimise or eliminate these risks in Australian workplaces and help to build safe and healthy workplaces.
At Pinnacle Health Group, we are fielding loads of enquiries relating to psychosocial support, and the practical ways to provide services and programs to complement psychosocial risk management policies and procedures.
We delivered July and August Masterclasses on this topic: Psychosocial Support for Workplaces.
In this session, we provide an overview of:
- the role of psychosocial support in overall workplace health and wellbeing
- an overview of the key categories of psychosocial risk in the workplace
- how to provide easy access to an Employee Assistance Program (EAP)
- implementing regular employee access to 1:1 conversations and feedback
- and understanding the training/resources relating to responding to mental health risks

Ep099 - Deloading and How to Beat Burnout with Tom Bosna
In this solo episode of our podcast, Tom Bosna discusses the concept of deloading and how it can help you achieve your fitness and work goals. Deloading involves taking a step back and allowing your body and mind to recover to prevent injury and maintain productivity.
Tom explores how deloading can be applied to various aspects of our lives including fitness, work, and managing stress levels. Just like a graph, where we train with increasing intensity for a specific period, then dip down for a deloading week or an offloading week before returning to regular training, we can apply this concept to our everyday lives.
Tom discusses the importance of managing time and energy as valuable resources and prioritising rest and recovery tactics such as exercise, meditation, and spending quality time with loved ones. Tom also explore the importance of mental and emotional recovery, focusing on quality over quantity in both strength training form and work output.
You will learn about realistic planning, delegation, and saying no to certain activities during high workload periods can help manage energy levels. We will also look at the benefits of social connection, setting up more realistic deadlines, and scheduling regular breaks throughout the year. Make sure to listen to this episode to equip yourself with the tools needed to handle the stresses of work and life!

Ep098 - How to Embrace Slow Living and Avoid Hustle Mindset with Dr Natalie Flatt
Are you someone who feels burned out and overworked? Have you been feeling like life is just moving too fast for you lately? If you're looking to slow down and create a slower lifestyle, this episode of the Well Workplaces podcast is just what you need.
Today, Tom is joined by Dr Natalie Flatt; the co-founder and CEO of Connect Psych Services. Together, they discuss the notion of slow living and creating a slower lifestyle, something that is increasingly important in today's busy and pressured work environment.
Dr Natalie highlights the negative impact of hustle culture, where success is often measured by speed, leading to burnout being all too common in our society. However, by intentionally slowing down, we can combat this and improve both our mental and physical health.
They also explore the importance of quality time and relationships, especially in the face of workplace stress. While there is still a mentality in some workplaces that one must do a million things at once, being intentional and focusing on the quality of our time and relationships is what really counts.
They discuss the three pillars that can help us create a more intentional and slower lifestyle: intentionality, quality, and conscious effort. By adopting these pillars, we can reduce FOMO and improve our mental health and productivity.
Finally, they offer some practical tips and suggestions for slowing down and being more mindful in our daily lives, such as taking deep breaths and turning off the TV during our commute. By focusing on these small changes and habit creation, we can sustainably achieve a slower lifestyle and improve our overall wellbeing.

Ep097 - Timeout with Tom and The Science Of Emotions: A Discussion on Men's Health
Are you a man who struggles to open up about your feelings? You're not alone. It's a common problem many men face, but don't worry because there is progress in breaking down that barrier. In our latest episode, Tom had the pleasure of connecting with Dr. Natalie Flatt to discuss men's health, particularly with Men's Health Week coming up.
Dr Natalie emphasises the importance of checking in with our emotions, and how language plays a critical role in many areas of men's mental health. She discusses how Affect Labelling is the science behind talking about emotions, which comes from our evolution and survival mechanism. Our brain tells us to either fight or flight when we feel threatened, leading to anxiety and anger.
Men's mental health can suffer when they believe there's only one solution to their problems. That's why self-check-ins and expanding our emotional vocabulary is essential to identifying emotions during threatening situations.
So, if you're ready to take the first step towards better mental health, listen to this episode now. It's informative and engaging, with plenty of insights into how men can break down the barriers and connect with their emotions.

Ep095 - Timeout with Tom and the Stress Temperature Check
Welcome back to Timeout With Tom. This episode features Samuel Eddy, founder, principal consultant and educator at Openchange. Samuel Eddy has helped small, medium and large organisations across Australia boost employee mental health and wellbeing and reduce stress in one-off guest speaking wellness events, ongoing group training and one-on-one coaching sessions.
Samuel discusses the stress temperature check tool, which can be used every day to become more aware of stress levels and create well-being anchors. The stress temperature check measures how much nervous tension is in the body or system at any one time. He suggests that understanding physical symptoms of stress, behavioural changes, and other indicators can help individuals determine their stress temperature. Ideally, people should aim to spend as much time in the green zone, where their mind is calm and focused on the present. However, it is also important to recognise and manage stress levels in the yellow zone, where people are more decisive and productive, to prevent slipping into the orange or red zone, where burnout can occur.
Samuel also shares his personal experience of ignoring warning signs and mistaking high stress levels for normal.

Our guest is Dr. Kristy Goodwin, a digital wellbeing expert and author of the book "Dear Digital: We Need to Talk."

Kristy also provides practical tips on how we can minimise multitasking in our daily lives and improve our productivity and focus. She emphasises the importance of taking breaks and setting boundaries to ensure a healthy relationship with technology.
Dr Kristy Goodwin highlights the importance of being aware of our digital habits and finding a balance between being online and offline. She encourages listeners to take small steps towards creating healthier digital habits and invites them to read her book, "Dear Digital: We Need to Talk."

Ep078 - The World's Healthiest Desk with Bart de Vries, Founder of Limber
Did you know 8 out of 10 people experience back pain in their life?
It certainly is a harrowing statistic and one that needs to be addressed.
Sometimes with pain comes fear of movement which can lead to seeing a well intended health practitioner that says 'you have the back of an 80 year old' or 'gee you are as stiff as a board' thus unintentionally feeding that fear avoidance.
I'm pleased to be joined by Bart De Vries, Founder of Limber. Bart is a Physiotherapist by background and the kiwi inventor behind Limber.
He has applied his knowledge and passion for human behaviour and movement to help address the statistics around pain with a holistic solution that you can move with.
In this chat, we will hear about Bart's journey of invention, we will talk about what is wrong with the desks we currently use. We will unpack some of the myths around posture and pain and Bart gives some insights on the trend of standing desks and how your best posture is your next posture.
Bart de Vries is the Founder of Limber and the creator of the world's healthiest desk, according to professors at the University of Berkeley California. As a qualified physio Bart was sick of seeing people return to the environments that were injuring them. So he created Limber to treat the root causes of back pain, creating products to promote movement, increase knowledge and promote a positive relationship with our backs - all in ways that are good for us and the planet.
