"Live your 5 to 9, not 9 to 5" Finally Succeed Combining Adventures & Everyday Life; Inventor of Microadventures and how a night in Greenland Changed his World - Alastair Humphreys

"Live your 5 to 9, not 9 to 5" Finally Succeed Combining Adventures & Everyday Life; Inventor of Microadventures and how a night in Greenland Changed his World - Alastair Humphreys

Alastair Humphreys, known for his concept of microadventures, realized during a Greenland trip that his extreme adventures were taking a toll on family time. To strike a balance, he coined "microadventures" – short, local trips offering adventure without extensive planning or time away. Through his books and talks, he's encouraged others to find adventure nearby, proving it's accessible to everyone.

  • Balancing adventures and family time: Discussing how to strike a healthy equilibrium between pursuing exciting experiences and spending quality time with family.
  • Questioning societal norms and pursuing dreams: Exploring the idea of challenging conventional expectations to follow one's passions and ambitions, without unnecessary drama or pressure.
  • Embracing everyday adventures and flexible living: Highlighting the joy of microadventures and the concept of living a life that doesn't revolve solely around a 9-to-5 schedule, promoting a more relaxed and enjoyable approach to daily life.

Episode 50: First Woman to Kayak Amazon on how to Deal with Extreme Tension in Expedition Teams, Surviving the 'Red Zone' drug gangs and almost being blown up by Dynamite - Darcy Gaechter

Episode 50: First Woman to Kayak Amazon on how to Deal with Extreme Tension in Expedition Teams, Surviving the 'Red Zone' drug gangs and almost being blown up by Dynamite - Darcy Gaechter

Darcy Gaechter, the first woman to kayak the Amazon, embarked on her historic journey after selling her kayaking business in Ecuador. Alongside her companions Don and Midge, they faced several challenges, including navigating through dam construction sites with dynamite, spending nearly a month in a notorious "Red Zone", and managing ongoing tensions within the expedition team. And many of us think of the Amazon River as the slow, peacefully meandering river through the jungle - which it is at some point. But the first stretch is some of the worlds hardest Class V whitewater Kayaking one can find. In this episode we talk about: Setting up an expedition team for success Dealing with fights and strong personalities in life & death situations Preparing with rigorous physical training, acquiring necessary equipment The navy, and local communities play important roles in providing support, security, and cultural insights along the journey. Navigating surprisingly dangerous rapids requires skillful paddling Combatting boredom during long stretches of flat water calls for mental resilience and fostering camaraderie among team members. The intense tidal waves rushing up the Amazon River present a fascinating natural phenomenon, requiring careful navigation and respect for the river's power. His first Polar Expedition was in the 70s "Literarily on the edge of existing maps" & Life in Northern Communities - James Raffan

James Raffan, a Canadian explorer, ventured into the Arctic almost 50 years ago, a time before modern technology like radio, GPS, or carbon fiber.

Most dangerous moment: Being stranded when a pilot forgot to pick him up, highlighting the risks of exploration without modern communication tools.

Life of northern communities: Raffan's experiences shed light on the significant changes in Arctic communities over the past half-century, from traditional lifestyles to the impacts of globalization and climate change.

Responsibilities of authors: Raffan emphasizes the importance of portraying indigenous communities with sensitivity and respect in his writing, challenging stereotypes and fostering cross-cultural understanding.

Success as an author: Despite challenges, Raffan has successfully captured the essence of his Arctic experiences through evocative storytelling, showcasing the enduring spirit of exploration and the transformative power of the wilderness.

(Bonus) West Hansen: FAILED FIRST ATTEMPT to kayak the Northwest Passage and how DANGEROUS it REALLY is to kayak the Amazon (republish from April 2023)

West Hansen is a world-renowned adventurer and explorer who is best known for his incredible feats of physical endurance and exploration in some of the most challenging environments on the planet.

In 2012, he made history by becoming one of only a few people to paddle the entire length of the Amazon River, a journey that spanned over 4,000 miles and took him more than six months to complete. This epic adventure was just one of many in West Hansen's long and illustrious career as an adventurer, which has taken him to some of the most remote and inhospitable corners of the globe.

His next adventure will be even bigger and a true first. Together with his team “The Arctic Cowboys” he wants to cross the Northwest Passage in a kayak. This has never been done before. In 2022 West and his team set out already, but had to abandon the expedition. They learned their lessons and will try again.

Republish Statement:

Early in 2023, we had the pleasure of talking with West about his first failed attempt to kayak the Northwest Passage.

In October 2023 - around 4 months ago - West Hansen and the Arctic Cowboys became the first to kayak the notorious Northwest Passage. This was his second attempt.

On that second Northwest Passage expedition was also Mark Agnew, whose interview about the historic world first we published last week (Episode 38).

That's why we thought republishing this episode with West would be the perfect continuation to get the full picture of the two expeditions and hear about how West failed in the place and how they made it work on the second attempt!

Expedition journalist on FLAWED Guinness Records and the commercialization of 'World First’ - Ash Routen

Ash Routen, is a respected expedition journalist contributing to major adventure magazines and newspapers, such as National Geographic, The Guardian, RedBull Magazine, and a regular contributor to Explorer's Web.
He believes in giving credit where credit is due and challenges and publically calls out Guinness and the credibility of expedition records, especially those claiming "world firsts" with numerous qualifiers that are not new. Ash, argues that these records, often pursued by "record hunters," prioritize sensationalism over accuracy or relevance.

"You have been the 40th person from your country doing pretty much this"

More and more 'World Firsts' are claimed, yet many of them, according to Ash, are irrelevant in the context of historic exploration and rather a commercial or promotional stunt.

However, it is clear that many of the receord are incredible personal and physical achievements still, but maybe also not more.

His views spark lively debates, facing opposition from those pursuing records.

"There is a lot of critique, but I have gotten used to it."

Running through war zones and the power of ‘the why’: “I made a promise and it became my purpose” - Jordan Wylie

Jordan Wylie is a British adventurer, former solider author and TV host known for his daring expeditions and humanitarian work. He gained international recognition for his solo row across the pirate-infested waters of the Bab-el-Mandeb strait, and his book "Citadel: The True Story of One Man's War Against the Pirates of Somalia" details his harrowing experiences. Wylie's commitment to raising awareness about piracy and supporting vulnerable communities in conflict zones showcases his passion for both adventure and philanthropy.

In a world filled with remarkable stories of triumph against all odds, Jordan Wylie's journey from a struggling student to a soldier, adventurer, best-selling author, and humanitarian stands out as an inspiring testament to the power of determination and compassion.

Jordan Wylie's life path was far from conventional. Growing up, he faced academic challenges that led to him dropping out of school at the age of 16. But as fate would have it, this decision was the catalyst for a remarkable transformation. He joined the British Army, where he discovered the importance of discipline, values, and responsibility. These lessons would later shape the course of his life, especially during his tour in Iraq, where on one day he made a promise that over 10 years later would change his life...

Wingsuit flying with no room for error and how to avoid panic - Marco Milanese

In the midst of Italy's awe-inspiring landscapes, Marco Milanese emerges as a remarkable figure who thrives in the heart-pounding realm of extreme sports. A base jumper and wingsuit flyer, Marco's unyielding passion for high-altitude adventures has led him to discover not only the limits of physical achievement but also the profound depths of his own mind. Against the backdrop of Italy's rugged mountains, Marco has found solace and inspiration, turning these towering giants into his personal refuge. For Marco, the mountains offer more than just a physical challenge – they become a conduit to a state of mind he aptly terms the "bubble." Within this mental sphere, distractions fade, fear dissipates, and a laser-like focus takes over. This heightened mindfulness becomes his guiding light as he confronts each daring exploit. The bubble is where time slows down, decisions crystallize, and the present moment reigns supreme. With the bubble as his mental armor, Marco navigates the fine line between calculated risk and reckless abandon. "My system when in panic is simple. Focus on breathing." Jim Baird is a Canadian adventurer and filmmaker known for his extraordinary survival skills in the wilderness. He was born and raised in Canada, where he developed a passion for outdoor activities such as canoeing, fishing, and camping from a young age.
Jim's thirst for adventure led him to explore some of the most remote and challenging regions in the world, but his deep love for the Canadian Arctic. He has spent countless days in the wilderness, honing his survival skills and pushing his limits.

In 2016, together with his brother Ted, Jim was selected as a contestant for the History Channel series, Alone, a show where participants are dropped off in the wilderness with minimal supplies and left to survive for as long as they can. 30 Marathons in 30 countries & how to be a parent and adventurer - Liz Warner

30 Marathons in 30 countries & how to be a parent and adventurer - Liz Warner

Liz Warner is a woman with a mission: to empower women around the world through her passion for running and travel. In early 2019, she launched Run to Reach, an 18-month marathon fundraising campaign with the goal of running 30 marathons in 30 countries before turning 30, to support one local, women-empowerment organization in each country visited. The outcome was remarkable, with Liz crossing her 30th and final finish line in June 2020, raising over $50,000 for these organizations.

But Run to Reach was not just about running. Liz's mission was to engage meaningfully with communities whose efforts too often go unnoticed in Western media. As she ran through the dense jungles of Sierra Leone, the small villages of Somaliland, and the uncanny beauty of Afghanistan, Liz sought to shine a spotlight on the tireless efforts of local NGOs dedicated to women’s empowerment.

Now Liz is facing a new challenge. Liz became a mother and soon realized that running marathons or ultramarathons (and especially training for those) does not correspond well with all the responsibilities of a mother. And furthermore, she knows that she wants to go out for new adventures.
