(Bonus) West Hansen: FAILED FIRST ATTEMPT to kayak the Northwest Passage and how DANGEROUS it REALLY is to kayak the Amazon (republish from April 2023)
West Hansen is a world-renowned adventurer and explorer who is best known for his incredible feats of physical endurance and exploration in some of the most challenging environments on the planet.
In 2012, he made history by becoming one of only a few people to paddle the entire length of the Amazon River, a journey that spanned over 4,000 miles and took him more than six months to complete. This epic adventure was just one of many in West Hansen's long and illustrious career as an adventurer, which has taken him to some of the most remote and inhospitable corners of the globe.
His next adventure will be even bigger and a true first. Together with his team “The Arctic Cowboys” he wants to cross the Northwest Passage in a kayak. This has never been done before. In 2022 West and his team set out already, but had to abandon the expedition. They learned their lessons and will try again.
Republish Statement:
Early in 2023, we had the pleasure of talking with West about his first failed attempt to kayak the Northwest Passage.
In October 2023 - around 4 months ago - West Hansen and the Arctic Cowboys became the first to kayak the notorious Northwest Passage. This was his second attempt.
On that second Northwest Passage expedition was also Mark Agnew, whose interview about the historic world first we published last week (Episode 38).
That's why we thought republishing this episode with West would be the perfect continuation to get the full picture of the two expeditions and hear about how West failed in the place and how they made it work on the second attempt!

Expedition journalist on FLAWED Guinness Records and the commercialization of 'World First’ - Ash Routen
Ash Routen, is a respected expedition journalist contributing to major adventure magazines and newspapers, such as National Geographic, The Guardian, RedBull Magazine, and a regular contributor to Explorer's Web.
He believes in giving credit where credit is due and challenges and publically calls out Guinness and the credibility of expedition records, especially those claiming "world firsts" with numerous qualifiers that are not new. Ash, argues that these records, often pursued by "record hunters," prioritize sensationalism over accuracy or relevance.
"You have been the 40th person from your country doing pretty much this"
More and more 'World Firsts' are claimed, yet many of them, according to Ash, are irrelevant in the context of historic exploration and rather a commercial or promotional stunt.
However, it is clear that many of the receord are incredible personal and physical achievements still, but maybe also not more.
His views spark lively debates, facing opposition from those pursuing records.
"There is a lot of critique, but I have gotten used to it."

Summiting Mt Everest without oxygen & how failing helps you grow - David Göttler
David Göttler is a German alpinist who is known for his impressive feats of mountaineering. One of his most notable achievements is summiting Mount Everest without the use of supplemental oxygen - something only very few climbers have ever achieved. The magnitude of this achievement can not be overstated, as the lack of oxygen at these high altitudes in the so-called 'Death Zone' can make it extremely difficult and incredibly dangerous for climbers to breathe and function properly.
But to reach that summit David needed many trials and failed countless times - at some point he had to return just a hundred meters below the summit. Today he will share his incredible story, what it means and takes to climb Everest without oxygen, and why he thinks that many people don't take enough responsibility for their own actions, don't want to fail anymore, and follow goals and successes more than experiences along the way - and not just in the world of mountaineering.

30 Marathons in 30 countries & how to be a parent and adventurer - Liz Warner
Liz Warner is a woman with a mission: to empower women around the world through her passion for running and travel. In early 2019, she launched Run to Reach, an 18-month marathon fundraising campaign with the goal of running 30 marathons in 30 countries before turning 30, to support one local, women-empowerment organization in each country visited. The outcome was remarkable, with Liz crossing her 30th and final finish line in June 2020, raising over $50,000 for these organizations.
But Run to Reach was not just about running. Liz's mission was to engage meaningfully with communities whose efforts too often go unnoticed in Western media. As she ran through the dense jungles of Sierra Leone, the small villages of Somaliland, and the uncanny beauty of Afghanistan, Liz sought to shine a spotlight on the tireless efforts of local NGOs dedicated to women’s empowerment.
Now Liz is facing a new challenge. Liz became a mother and soon realized that running marathons or ultramarathons (and especially training for those) does not correspond well with all the responsibilities of a mother. And furthermore, she knows that she wants to go out for new adventures.

Skiing off 220ft cliffs & how to truly master fear - Julian Carr
Julian Carr is an extreme ski athlete. At a young age he realized something magical: Fresh, soft powder snow acts like a foam pit or a lot of pillows allowing for big jumps and soft landings. And that's what he did. He started to jump very big cliffs.
He won countless awards, won a gold medal at the X-Games and eventually went on to hold a world record for jumping off a 220ft cliff (about 70m) inverted. But the path to get there was long, hard, painful and mostly, very very scary.
But he learned that fear actually helped him and he needs to master his own fear in order to achieve his goals and survive the jumps.
Today Julian is our guest and we talked about how he got into extreme skiing, why he jumps off cliffs and how he realized he can master his own fear.

Rowing across all oceans & how to enjoy solitude - Erden Eruç
One day Erden stood in front of a map and drew a line with his finger. A line from the United States where he lived across the Pacific, across Asia and Europe all the way to Turkey - his home country. He then kept drawing and made it a circle reaching the United States again.
Today Erden holds over 15 World Records, many of them due to his incredible achievement to follow this line using human power only. That's why his biggest record stands taller than all - The first to solo circumnavigate the planet using only human power.
Another one of these records is most days spent alone at sea. Over 1000 days and counting Erden has spent completely alone in a kayak on the oceans.
How can one push themselves to so extreme limits? How do you keep going when all is against you? And how can you cope with being alone, at sea?
