Ep 13 : Women of South Korea and how to be Fluent Korean (with MinJu @FluentKorean)
We are exploring guest MinJu's journey to become more fluent in both Fluent Korean culture and language. As someone who grew up largely in Manila Philippines,  MinJu is keen to learn more about her South Korean roots and shares her research on her FluentKorean website. I learnt so much from our conversation from MinJu's experiences in International School, how learning about Korean culture helps her understand her parents and the terms that Koreans adopt from other languages. A highlight of the conversation is MinJu's research about Gisaeng (or Kisaeng), women who were enslaved sex workers and also very well educated. Who knew?!  This really inspires me to learn more about East and Southeast Asian history, something I learnt nothing about at school! How have you explored the culture and history of your Asian heritage? Ep 1 : Ethnic Identity (with my sister!)
We are kicking off with the first episode of Yellow Bee Pod on the topic of Ethnic Identity. In this episode, we sit down with my younger sister, Jessica Gar- Lai Cheung, to discuss our upbringing and how our ethnic identity has changed. As British Born Chinese women living in England, we were never quite "Chinese enough" OR "British enough". Even though we are really close, this is the first time we have had such an open discussion about our sense of belonging or childhood experiences of racism and culture. How do you balance different cultural heritages and values? If you would like to share your experiences of ethnic identity and not-quite-belonging, I would love to chat to you on Twitter, Instagram or over email!
