In this episode, we met with our guest Abrar Shahin, a clinical supervising BCBA from Circle Care Services to discuss embracing neurodiversity in children. Through a candid discussion, we explore various perspectives, including philosophies and trauma-informed ABA, building skills and tolerance in children, their peers and adults, and the significance of accommodations over compliance.

We challenge the notion of "fairness" and redefine it as getting what one needs to thrive. Our conversation also touches upon preventative strategies, and the unconventional methods that only people who work with autistic kids can understand like buying a child ice cream to curse in their room.

Throughout this 45-minute session, Kirby and Laura reflect on their own experiences and their journey to obtaining a diagnoses for their children. The topic for this episode is "ableism." Laura and Kirby will define it, explain it, and identify ways in which we can stop doing it! In order to be inclusive, we have to address this systemic issue within our society.

Kirby and Laura brainstorm their rules of #inclusion. These rules include: saying yes, being flexible, identifying barriers and solutions, never escalating people, and never giving up. They discuss the need for #empathy and #understanding, considering #biases, applying #udl and rebuttals on pushback they have received over time.

In this episode, we discuss #equity issues in #award ceremonies.  By identifying concerns and #brainstorming ideas to create a more inclusive climate when recognizing student achievements as a #community approach to the bigger picture as opposed to fostering a competitive environment in academics, Laura and Kirby determine what would make award ceremonies more motivating and #positive for all.

In this episode, the hosts of the Yes Day Inclusion Podcast, Laura & Kirby discuss their visits to #Disney Theme Parks over the years and the impact of the Disability Access Pass #DAS over time. Compared to the full-service accommodations originally made by the parks with the Guest Assistance Card, their #access points took a dip for several years but with the new system that rolled out in Fall of 2021, it seems they are prioritizing the #needs of their vulnerable populations and moving towards improving their DAS system...but we need to have a hard conversation about #equity.
