Respect
Today’s Monday Morning Joe explores the Christian principle of respect.
Jesus showed respect by listening with empathy, treating others with dignity and worth, respecting cultural customs and differences, and serving others.
At the YMCA, the importance of respect as a core Christian principle is it reflects God's love and fosters healthy relationships within our community and beyond.
What is a Christian Principle?
Today’s Monday Morning Joe begins a new series focused on the 12 Christian principles of the YMCA. Join Joe as he explores what it means to use the principles of respect, love, peace, grace, empowerment, caring, faith, hope, honesty, responsibility, justice, and servanthood to transform yourself and your community.
Tyranny of the Moment
Every so often we can find ourselves stuck in a moment and we can’t get out of it. In today’s episode, Joe talks about the tyranny of the moment and offers resources on how to get unstuck when you are feeling trapped and lose sight of your goals.
Cup of Joe for Two: Tim Hallman
Tim Hallman, Director of Christian Emphasis for the YMCA of Greater Fort Wayne, Indiana, joins Joe Kendrick, Executive Director of Christian Mission for the YMCA of Greater Oklahoma City, for a Cup of Joe for Two.
Tim shares his story of joining the Fort Wayne YMCA association eight years ago, how he built trust and friendship among the staff and how he helps his YMCA lean into its Christian mission to love, serve and care for their staff and community.
Sabotage
When you disrupt the way things are, you are going to be met by a natural phenomenon of change called sabotage. Sabotage is natural and normal when you are making changes to your life and organization. Most saboteurs think they are protecting the organization or protecting you because they are keeping everything in its place.
In today’s episode, Joe shares some stories of sabotage and what happens when you do not anchor yourself to the vision you have for your life or your organization.
Love your Neighbor
In today’s episode, Joe talks about the Christian tradition of Lent and how the season of Lent provides an opportunity for each of us to embrace the reality of our mortality. When we embrace the reality that one day this world will pass away, we open ourselves up to being able to fully love our neighbor as ourselves because we see life as the gift we have been given.
Your Life Now
In today’s episode, Joe shares his story of merging the life he lives with the life that lives in him. It’s a journey from doing what he thought he ought to do to doing what his life, his soul, is calling him to live.
Conflict
In this morning’s episode of Monday Morning Joe, Joe talks about everyone’s least favorite subject: conflict.
Vision for your Life
The old proverb says, “where there is no vision, you get out of control.” For a lot of people when you ask why they feel out of control, feel lost, stagnant, etc, it’s because they either do not have vision or they have lost sight of their vision.
In this episode, Joe shares his journey and resources he used to find his vision in transition.
Fatherhood Insights
In this episode of Monday Morning Joe, Joe takes a chance and tries a different approach. Instead of an episode aimed a varied audience, today’s episode is aimed at men, specifically fathers.
You are invited to listen as Joe shares his story of being a new father, the burden of fatherhood, and the reality that today is a chance to be a better dad than you were the day before.
Hospitality & Welcome
Today on Monday Morning Joe, Joe Kendrick, Executive Director of Christian Mission, shares stories of how the YMCA can live out the Christian principle of hospitality and welcome.

Peace on Earth & Goodwill to All
I heard the bells on Christmas Day
Their old, familiar carols play,
And wild and sweet
The words repeat Of peace on earth, goodwill to men!
Grace & Mercy
Christmas is rarely perfect. We try hard to create the perfect Christmas with decorations, presents, and meals. We have all begun decorating for Christmas only to find the lights broken, ornaments misplaced, or the tree covered in mold. Parents, we have all been there Christmas Eve, looking all over the house for that one present we hid because we cannot remember where we hid it.
Still Christmas comes every year despite the imperfection.
Such grace and mercy should give us hope this, Advent. Despite our imperfection, Christmas still arrives.
Abide with me
As we move into the Christmas season, I wish to offer you some words of hope from an old hymn:
Abide with me; fast falls the eventide; The darkness deepens; Lord, with me abide; When other helpers fail and comforts flee, Help of the helpless, oh, abide with me.
Veteran's Day
Here are four things you can do to honor our veterans and work for peace:
- Say thank you to a veteran and show that you have some understanding of their work.
- Offer your skills and services to those who are transitioning from military service to civilian life.
- Volunteer at your local YMCA military welcome center. If you are in the OKC area, please schedule a time to volunteer at our YMCA military welcome center located at Will Rogers Airport.
- Work for peace through volunteer opportunities with your local YMCA and give to your local YMCA’s peacemaking efforts.

Pride Takeover
Today, Shade shares his perspective on how Pride Month is an example of the Y putting Christian principles into practice through programs that build healthy spirit, mind, and body for all.
Build a Beloved Community
Cultivating beloved community begins with seeing value in a person simply because they are valuable. Seeing our neighbor with value begins with seeing value in ourselves. It begins by loving the Lord our God with all our heart, soul, mind, and strength, and then loving our neighbor as ourselves. On this hang all the law and the words of the prophets.
By cultivating beloved community through seeing one another with value as a child of God, we lay the strong foundation to build a beloved community.
Interrupt Our Dinner
The ones who recognize Jesus, are not the insiders.
They are them.
They are the outsiders.
Funny thing is at one time or another, you and I have been there.
We too have been them.
Sometimes we need someone to interrupt our dinner to remind us of God’s extravagant love.
Cup of Joe for Two: Nathan Chandler
Today’s guest is fellow Longview High School Alumni Nathan Chandler. Nathan joins Cup of Joe to talk about one of his favorite movies, One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest. Nathan hosts Movies are Life, a podcast that provides movie commentary for busy people.
Self-Care
Self-care is anything you do to take care of yourself for your wellbeing. Almost anything can be considered an act of self-care. Here are a few often used examples: taking a nap, reading a book, or going for a walk. I want to argue that self-care is deeper than simply making time to read a book. It’s more than what we call a technical change, which is a type of change to address an immediate problem. It’s an adaptive change in which you are intentionally setting aside time in your day, week, month, or year, to do something that cares for your wellbeing. Self-care is something you do that is life-giving and helps you function at your best.
Cup of Joe for Two: Lacy Kendrick

Get to the Chopper
By getting to the chopper, we get out of the jungle and above the issue at hand and see the multiple triangles existing in my son’s life that may be negatively influencing him, positively influencing him, or what behaviors and habits we need to help establish at home to help him be successful. By getting to the chopper, we not only can see better, but we also remove ourselves from the triangle while staying emotionally connected to our son, his teacher, and the conflict at hand. We then can lower the chopper, re-enter the triangle, and help my son function in a healthy way.
Anxiety
One way to look at the world and ourselves is to see how we are all connected in a system, and each action or reaction in the system sends out a ripple. Based on the family system we originated from, we have a specific reaction to the ripple.
Functioning Amid a Challenge
Being an agent in God’s mission to heal the world means you are going to disrupt the homeostasis of the community you live in. You’re going to disrupt the “way we do things around here” and people are going to emotionally react to the change you are inciting because the change you are inciting is change that heals the world. That kind of change that raises the dead.
Cup of Joe for Two
Welcome to a special Monday Morning Joe: A Cup of Joe for Two!
Self-differentiation
Self-differentiation is being able to separate yourself from the emotional process of a system such as your family, work, friends, etc. while staying connected. It is being able to have different opinions and values than others in your organization and stay emotionally connected to them. In an organization system or family system self-differentiation is being clear about your role in the system and clear about your identity outside the system. Not allowing the system to define your identity.
Be an Agent in God's Mission
Learn what it means and what it takes to be an agent in God’s mission to heal the world.
Transform the Community
The beautiful thing about the Y-Clubhouse is that the director (Yesica Gonzales), coordinators, and program staff are people within those communities. It is a community developing its community by loving them, serving them, and caring for them.
For me, the Y-Clubhouse is a sacred space in which agents in God’s mission to heal the world are actively transforming their community.
Cup of Joe for Two

Know Your Purpose
The Y is committed to developing new generations of changemakers who will create the communities we all want to live in.
Run the Race
Focus on how Jesus livedand work to imitate that in your own life. In the God Movement, we are called to imitate Christ. The only waywe can imitate is if we fixate.
Best Practices of Movement
Create habits, routines, movements that all align for caring yourself.
Bear Witness
Remember the question: Is your glass half full or half empty? John offers ussomething different: the glass is refillable. Live, act, and love like you’re at a wedding and you’re not running out of wine.
