“So I think one of the things that's really important for me is thinking about the way that health disparities are framed in this country. And if we think about that key issue, most health disparities are focused towards marginalized communities…”

“And so if we think about that intersectionality, for example of living as a race and ethnic minority, and also in a larger body, with those, just those two, multiple those two intersecting marginalized identities, then, you know, it's really important for me that I take that into account in my work…”

“It's really sad, actually, the discrimination that goes on you. Some people may call it microaggressions towards folks in larger bodies that are occurring in not just healthcare environments, but will focus on the healthcare environment.…”

“Social media is a morass of misconceptions when it comes to nutrition and health, and I, you know, I and my team spend a very large part of our roles combating these myths, such as Inflammatory foods and seed oils as inflammatory, dairy as inflammatory, diet culture in general”

“Until we can change pricing models and that goes into agriculture economics and politics and lobbying and congress until we can change the pricing of foods and if we can make really really intentional pricing decisions and include dieticians like me in that those decisions about fresh produce and foods that we consider that we want people to eat more of and so we make them very affordable and we somehow you know I don't want to say novelize, but we incentivize them and we de incentivize foods that we shouldn't be consuming so much of. I don't see our national health getting very much better.”

Diabetes: Optimize Gut Microbiome Through Diet

Diabetes: Optimize Gut Microbiome Through Diet

In today’s episode, we are honored to have Dr. Karen Corbin. Dr. Corbin will discuss optimizing gut health through diet, especially in the context of diabetes. Tune in for valuable insights that bridge the gap between research and real-world applications in the realm of nutrition and health.

Clinical Translational Scientist at the AdventHealth Translational Research Institute focused on advancing gut microbiome and human metabolism research. Founder and Chief Geek at Geeks That Speak with a mission to elevate the voices of scientists through scientific storytelling.

“... The bottom line is that we are the ones that feed the gut microbes. So it goes into our mouth, most of it gets absorbed in the small intestine, and that's where most of the magic happens in the body. But there's a small percentage, which we control based on our food choices, that ends up making it all the way down the gut to the colon, where the microbes can ferment those foods and perform various functions. So diet is by far the most fundamental way that we as humans impact those gut microbes every single day, because we all got to eat at least once or twice a day.” On This Episode You Will Learn -
