2 - How do our brains respond to "fattening" foods when we are hungry
In this episode we will discuss how the brain responds to images of "fattening" vs. "non-fattening" foods when we are hungry or full. The research paper is Regional brain response to visual food cues is a marker of satiety that predicts food choice.
What you need to know: if you are hungry and you are exposed to "fattening" food or "fattening" food cues, you will have a much stronger drive to eat than if you are exposed to "non-fattening" foods. So, limit your exposure to "fattening" foods and their cues and, when you get hungry for those foods, eat "non-fattening" foods so that the temptation to eat the "fattening" food is reduced.
1 - Is there a body weight set point?
What you need to know: consuming highly palatable, energy-rich foods (think pizza, French fries, donuts, hamburgers, candy, deserts, pastries, soft drinks) may raise your body weight set point, thus making weight loss and weight loss maintenance very difficult.
In this episode of the Appetite Under Control podcast we are discussing whether you can just eat less of a normal diet to lose weight and keep it off. Or, do you need to eat more simple, natural foods. We discuss two studies - Influence of a Monotonous Food on Body Weight Regulation in Humans and Sensory Feedback in Regulation of Body Weight in Humans: is there a Ponderostat? Do you prefer eating simpler foods or forcefully restricting calories? For some people, myself included, forcefully restricting calories is too difficult. I need an alternate strategy, which we discuss in this episode.
