An interview with Gavin Meiring, Founder and Shareholder of TASTE OF TULBAGH
Taste Of Tulbagh Brings Superb Award Winning Wines From Estates In Tulbagh Right To Your Door.
Often described as the Valley of Abundance, Tulbagh has its own unique beauty and tranquility. Pieter Potter, surveyor general to the first governor of the Cape, Jan van Riebeeck must have felt this way back in 1658 when first setting eyes on the Tulbagh Valley. However he would not have known then that one day the valley was to produce a wide range of exquisite wines.
Tulbagh is the fourth oldest town in South Africa (after Cape Town, Stellenbosch and Swellendam) dating back to the early 1700s, but in more recent times, wine has moved centre stage. It is situated in a bowl surrounded by the imposing Obiqua Mountains to the west, the Winterhoek Mountains in north and the Witzenberg Mountains to the east. The Southern side of the valley is open to cooling south-east winds during the hot summer months. Accordingly Tulbagh enjoys some of the most diverse and attractive conditions for viticulture in the Cape, attributes that have attracted many new producers to the valley.
The Taste Of Tulbagh now brings these suburb wines to an exclusive online wine selection, which has received a string of national and international awards including Diners Club Wine Maker of the Year and a healthy spread of gold and double gold Veritas awards.

An Interview with Johan Malan, Owner and Winemaker at SIMONSIG, Stellenbosch
Simonsig Wine Estate is synonymous with the history of the South African wine industry, the Stellenbosch wine region, and the Malan family name. These elements are intertwined in this family-owned farm, where the late Frans Malan produced the first bottle of our much-loved Kaapse Vonkel, South Africaʼs first Méthode Cap Classique made in the classic bottle-fermented style. He is also honoured for co-founding the thriving Stellenbosch Wine Route, a first in its time. Today, his legacy lives on through his sons, Francois and Johan, and grandchildren Francois-Jacques, Christelle and Michael, the 2nd and 3rd Malan generations at Simonsig Wine Estate.
"At Simonsig, the Malan family values drive the Estate’s commitment to producing wines of internationally regarded excellence, expressing the unique and diverse terroir of the Stellenbosch region. We also believe that being a gift of nature made for the enjoyment of people, our wine offering should always be complemented by true Cape hospitality and efficient service."

GOOD CHEFS COOK BECAUSE THEY HAVE TO, GREAT CHEFS COOK BECAUSE THEY WANT TO! "I studied at Silwood Kitchens in Rondebosch and did a 3 year Grande Diploma course. Started as a trainee at Terroir Restaurant under the supervision of Michael Broughton. Then I travelled abroad to Peebles in Scotland, where I got to work at a Boutique hotel and restaurant with their own fresh produce garden. That is where my love for fresh seasonal food started. After returning to South Africa I have worked my way through a few wine farms such as Big Easy, Cuvee @ Simonsig and as Head Chef at Babel@ Babylonstoren before joining Longtable Restaurant as Head of kitchen in September 2018. I have been a chef for almost 14 years, and still loving it!"

We like to think that Longtable is all of this and more. An Interview with Boela Gerber, Cape Wine Master and Winemaker at GROOT CONSTANTIA, Constantia, South Africa
About The Winelands welcomes Cape Wine Master and Winemaker at Groot Constantia, Boela Gerber. Boela joined Groot Constantia as winemaker in 2001. Groot Constantia is South Africa's oldest wine farm (335 years old in 2020) is also one of the oldest brands in the world which has reached iconic status.
It all began in 1679, when Simon van der Stel was appointed by the Dutch East India Company to govern the Cape of Good Hope. After years of loyal service, he requested land from the Company. He periodically sent out riders to collect soil samples. In 1685 he chose 891 morgen (about 763 ha) situated behind Table Mountain for its wine-growing potential and magnificent scenery. Over the years the wines produced on the estate caught the attention of influential people across the globe – clearly due to its impressive quality. Global aristocracy made sure that they had enough stock of this acclaimed and precious product.
"Our founder named his farm "Constantia" after the Latin word for constancy or steadfastness. These attributes he valued greatly and today we follow in his footsteps to uphold his enduring legacy of perfection at Groot Constantia."

Chris continues..."We believe wine is made in the vineyards, and our goal is to allow the vineyards to express themselves by interfering as little as possible. As a result we have adopted a minimalist approach in both the vineyards and the cellar. The idea being to minimalise the human influence on the final product. In the vineyards we do everything by hand, from pruning to harvesting. We are also proud members of the Biodiversity and Wine Initiative, and of the Integrated Production of Wine Scheme. We have set aside 30% of the estate and dedicated it to the Western Capes indigenous flora and fauna."

To make our wines more accessible we’ve established a tasting centre with stunning views of the Paarl valley and the craggy Klein Drakenstein mountains. And not content to leave it at that we’ve also created a Cemetery of Forgotten Wines in our underground cellar - an interesting and bizarre collection of museum wines that the consumer can interact with.

Between 2010 and 2015, the family produced wine as an interest rather than for commercial purposes. In 2016 Thornton Pillay joined Highgate and the wine making process was officially professional. Thornton having studied as a Wine Maker and Viticulturist in Stellenbosch, worked at Ernie els wines, Groot Constantia, KWV and in France (Burgundy), now became the Wine Maker & Viticulturist at Highgate Wine Estate taking the farm to a fully functioning wine estate. The opportunity then arose to build a Tasting Room to showcase and present the premium wines Thornton created. In 2016 Thornton bottled the first commercially produced wines of 1500 bottles. Highgate Wine Estate is now producing 17 000 bottles per annum.
