Strength of Will: Part Three

Strength of Will: Part Three

+60km/h, downhill, crash in the peleton, helicopter transport. A series of words no cyclist wants to be a part of. This was the scenario Will Celis found himself in twelve months ago. A huge crash at the PDCC North Dandalup handicap on the downhill run to the finish line, left Will unconcious and in intensive care in Royal Perth Hospital. What happens next needs to be heard to be believed, we were fortunate enough to look into his eyes as he told it and it definitely left a mark on us. Will is a remarkable man and a great mentor to many people he meets. His story of recovery, self reflection and reprioritisation of what's important in life has something for everyone. Take a quiet moment for this one. The Amateur Hour podcast is proudly supported by, and supports, Lakes Bikes Cockburn and Professional Whey. Generation cX: Tristan Nash and Zoe Davison

Generation cX: Tristan Nash and Zoe Davison

We bring you two of the hottest talents coming out of WA (short for Where it's At)! With enough jerseys between them to start a clothing label, these Gen cXr's are shaping the landscape locally, leaving a cleat print on all 3 disciplines; cX, Road and MTB. Just like their generation, Tristan and Zoe are worthy of attention, especially now as they are entering adulthood ie... elite competition! Their formative years were shaped by fun loving, active families, who provided opportunities for them on two wheels, and it's this freedom approach that's keeping Tristan and Zoe grounded as the stakes climb higher. With some big events still to come in 2022 for these young stars, listeners will no doubt become invested in their futures as both reveal their determined, light hearted and lively personalities. Swan Drafting: The Full Head

Swan Drafting: The Full Head

Alastair sits down with OG duo Josh Vinci and Luke Bartlett from Swan Drafting Cycling Club. This is a great chat about the genesis of the club and how they've developed and maintained the culture of the club. We talk racing, bunchies, the joys of kit design and creating a splash in the Perth scene. The love of beer and bikes shines through in this one, as does a theme of using the bike as a conduit for self care physically and mentally. Beers were potentially consumed during this chat as we sat back and chewed the fat. Enjoy, follow swandrafting_cc on Instagram and check out the kit posts and recent ToMR team reveals..... hilarious!!
Big shout outs from the SDCC boys to Dan from Stx, the crew at Pedal Mafia and Giant Osborne Park. They'd also like to share their appreciation to their post ride brew stop Cheeky Boy in Applecross and club sponsor Accord Plumbing.

Remember, Wednesday club ride departs 5:45am from the motorcycle parkup on the city side of the Narrows, Monday easy spin 6am from Narrows.

Crash Culture

Crash Culture

We don’t like to talk about it, but lately it’s impossible to ignore. Crashes have increased significantly, with carnage occurring on a consistent basis. The tail end of the winter road series saw some of this, as did the Tour of Margaret River, and recently the start of the summer criteriums has seen frequent crashes. Are we looking at a strength Vs skill issue, a respect and etiquette issue, or is this part of the sport and something we can’t influence? The Amateur Hour speaks with 3 highly respected members of the local racing scene, Stevie Hall, Adam Jones and fan favourite Ali Milne. Each offer their insight on the topic, helping us reflect on what has been a challenging period for all involved in the sport, while offering some learned wisdoms when it comes to bunch racing. As we come to the close of Season 2 for the podcast, we wish listeners a safe and happy festival period. The Amateur Hour will be back next year for another lap and we can’t wait to keep promoting this awesome sport on two wheels. Cheers, Alastair and Craig 🙌🎉🎄🍻🚴🏼‍♂️🚴‍♀️🎙

The Classic

The Classic

The biggest race of the season. A pure classic. Hilly and hard. This year’s edition of the Peel Classic was all of the above. Throw into that mix a torrential downpour with hail, thunder and lightning and you have a day to remember. This Amateur Hour special episode goes inside the event looking through the lenses of organiser, volunteer and cyclist. Interviews, volunteer briefings and race updates from lead vehicles all intertwine to give you, the cycling fan, a taste of the big event, and the ingredients required for success on the day. The Amateur Hour thanks all those who jumped on the pod for this episode, it was loads of fun and it kept me out of trouble while I recover from a nasty crash. Looking forward to your feedback listeners…Cheers, Al

Cycling and Coffee, the Dome Way.

Cycling and Coffee, the Dome Way.

Meet Toby Brown, team manager of Dome Coffee Cycling Team. 10 years ago Toby and a few mates started a shop team which has gradually grown into one of Perth’s most successful teams. Initially sponsoring with his Dome Cafe, Toby soon gained sponsorship from the franchise and grew the roster into a competitive and highly respected racing team, which competed locally and overseas. Putting people first throughout the journey, Toby created a clear identity for the team, one where riders were aware they were not only representing their sponsor, but also the families behind the name Dome Coffee.

Peeling back PDCC

Peeling back PDCC

The racing scene in Perth has taken off these last 2 years. Increased interest in men, women and juniors has seen bigger bunches, faster racing and more race options to choose from across a calendar year. The increase has brought to a head some of the challenges clubs have faced for some time, and has tested the patience of race organisers and riders alike. In this episode we speak with Peel District Cycling Club Treasurer, Clint Hort. Clint’s part of an active committee which has been steadily building a strong club culture, with a core focus of growing the sport at a grass roots level. With the WA state champs just around the corner, we step behind the velvet curtain and hear what’s required to ensure these big events go ahead, and receive the full support they so need. We’ve got ourselves a special sport listeners, let’s look after it now, and for the future.

Power of the Mind

Power of the Mind

Road Running. It’s like the weather. Fickle. One minute you’re flying, the next you’re becoming best buds with your physio to overcome the latest ailment in your foot/calf/toe/shin you name it. Meet Fran Lang, trail and endurance runner, super mum and full-time worker. Trail running found Fran at an opportune time in life! Recently married, promoted at work and planning to start a family, road running didn’t cut it. Injuries took their toll, and Fran wasn’t getting the fix her mind and body so needed. Through a friend the trails appeared. Soon Fran was getting greater variety in running, hills, scenery, social and serious fun. The pressure of road running was replaced with the freedom of trails, and this flowed into other areas of her life. A whole other world of running opened up, and Fran threw herself into some trail events and immediately found her groove. Think 3am starts, back to back to back marathons and all of a sudden, Fran was hooked. She’d found the missing piece of the exercise puzzle, and the flow on effect to work/home life was noticeable. Soon after, Fran and her husband Matt learned the exciting news they were expecting a baby boy. This introduced all new challenges to their lives as the goal posts shifted when it came to exercise. Fran had to adapt her mindset quickly, re evaluate goals and come back to why she loves running in the first place. Listeners will learn great insights into creating opportunities for training and adjusting your expectations. The power of the mind. For those amateur athletes out there, I know you’ll appreciate Fran’s story. She’s one hell of a story teller, and I hope you take something away from this latest instalment of, The Amateur Hour.

Toast to ToMR 🥂

Toast to ToMR 🥂

ToMR version 11 was a classic! With over 700 cyclists and 130 teams it promised to be a beauty, and boy did it deliver! Lakes Bikes entered six teams, 5 mens and one women’s team for this years event. Follow the action from the weekend as my teammates and I review all 5 stages and discuss race tactics for days 2 and 3. It didn’t quite go to plan this year as our ‘arch’ rivals Freo tri club took the chocolates in our grade. Also mentioned is results from other grades and special mentions for event organisers and other diehards. Just when you thought you couldn’t love cycling even more, then there was ToMR 2020. Round of applause for Cycling Eventures in particular Brendon Morrison and Rebecca Cotton 👏
