The Brain Love Podcast
By Dr. Delvena

Unpacking the Mind
Kendrick Lamar has always used his music as a mirror to society, tackling mental health, trauma, and cultural identity. His Super Bowl halftime show was no different —it was a statement, a movement, and a moment in history. From the powerful symbolism of red and blue unity to Samuel L. Jackson's portrayal of Uncle Sam, every element had layers of meaning.
Listen as Dr. Delvena Thomas dives deep into the significance of Kendrick's performance-from "40 Acres and a Mule" to Serena Williams' unapologetic presence.

"Breaking the Cycle: Black Men, Family, and Redemption."
Black men have many challenges, many are unspoken. Many men can go from tears to triumph, if they are willing to heal. Pastor Robinson is on the couch with Dr. Delvena discussing his silence as a child/teen which resulted in anger which included workplace violence, a period of crimes and arrests, including strongarmed robbery, cocaine possession. He is transparent in how he broke the cycle through accountability, healing and redefining his story. In 1998 he experienced an out-of-body experience and gave his life to Christ, while in a jail cell. This is a conversation that is usually unheard. We are talking redemption.

Men and Mental Health

Mental health is a critical issue for Black men in the United States, with unique challenges and disparities compared to other groups. Here are some key statistics and insights regarding Black men and mental health:
1. **Prevalence of Mental Health Issues**: Black men are less likely to report mental health issues, but they experience mental health challenges at comparable or higher rates than other groups. The American Psychological Association (APA) indicates that Black men are more likely to experience serious psychological distress.
2. **Depression and Anxiety**: Black men are less likely to be diagnosed with major depressive disorder and generalized anxiety disorder compared to white men, but they often experience these conditions in silence due to stigma and cultural attitudes. Research suggests that about 6.4% of Black men have depression and 10.8% have anxiety disorders, but these numbers may be underreported.
3. **Suicide Rates**: Suicide rates among Black men have been rising. According to the CDC, Black men aged 20-44 saw a significant increase in suicide rates from 2014 to 2019. Although Black men have lower suicide rates compared to white men overall, the rates are increasing faster among Black men.
4. **Stigma and Cultural Barriers**: Mental health stigma is particularly strong in the Black community, often leading to reluctance to seek help. Cultural beliefs about masculinity and strength can prevent Black men from acknowledging mental health issues and seeking treatment.
5. **Access to Care**: Black men are less likely to receive mental health treatment. Only about 26.4% of Black men with mental illness receive treatment compared to 45.4% of white men. Barriers to care include lack of access to mental health services, socioeconomic factors, and mistrust of the healthcare system.
6. **Substance Abuse**: Black men are at higher risk for substance use disorders, which can co-occur with mental health issues. The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) reports that Black men have higher rates of illicit drug use compared to the general population.
7. **Incarceration and Mental Health**: Black men are disproportionately affected by the criminal justice system. Incarceration rates are significantly higher for Black men, and the experience of incarceration can exacerbate mental health issues. Additionally, mental health services in correctional facilities are often inadequate.
8. **Impact of Racism**: Structural racism and discrimination contribute significantly to mental health disparities. The chronic stress associated with experiencing racism can lead to mental health issues, including anxiety, depression, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
9. **Youth and Mental Health**: Black boys and adolescents face unique mental health challenges, including higher rates of exposure to violence and trauma. This early exposure can lead to long-term mental health issues if not addressed.

He's Sober
APRIL IS ALCOHOL AWARENESS MONTH.
Three years ago on April 18, I interviewed Richard Johnson about his struggles with alcohol addiction. He openly shared how as a "happy" man, who was happily married, was comfortable with money, his job, family, and cars he overindulged in alcohol. Alcoholism is not always about trauma and sadness. Sometimes we become addicted or abuse it because we just love how it tastes.
Now, he is battling lung cancer that started in his colon and then metastasized to his colon and then to his lung. He had undergone multiple surgeries.
The consequences of heavy alcohol use are serious and include an increased risk of cancer, dementia, falls and dangerous interactions with medications.
New research suggests the risks of even moderate or light drinking may outweigh the benefits. In June, the World Health Organization said that no level of alcohol consumption is safe for our health. And a new study funded by the National Institutes of Health found that binge drinking among adults ages 35 to 50 has reached historic levels.

Breaking the Silence: Let's Talk About Uterine Fibroids
ARE YOU READY TO TAKE THE COUCH?
Hey everyone, tonight I want to shine a light on a topic that affects millions of women worldwide: uterine fibroids. These non-cancerous growths in the uterus can cause a range of symptoms, from heavy menstrual bleeding and pelvic pain to fertility issues. My guest tonight, Mrs. Christine Dukes-Hart, LCSW, nearly lost her life because of complications created by uterine fibroids.
Mrs. Hart developed TTP, Thrombotic Thrombocytopenic Purpura, and was unconscious in the ICU for several days. It's rare but can be life-threatening if not diagnosed and treated promptly. TTP affects the blood's ability to clot properly, leading to the formation of small blood clots throughout the body. This can cause a range of symptoms, including bruising, fatigue, fever, confusion, and even organ damage. Early detection is crucial, so it's important to be aware of the warning signs and seek medical attention if you or someone you know experiences them. Treatment often involves plasma exchange therapy and medications to suppress the immune system.
Many women suffer in silence from fibroids, unaware that effective treatments and support are available. Whether you're currently dealing with fibroids or know someone who is, it's essential to seek medical guidance and explore all available options. Knowledge is power, and together, we can make a difference in the fight against this rare but serious condition. Stay informed, stay vigilant, and take care of yourselves. Let's support each other, share our stories, and empower women to take control of their reproductive health.
Take nothing for granted, my friends. Life is precious, and each day is a gift. Hold your loved ones close, chase your dreams passionately, and never forget to savor the simple joys that surround you.

ARE YOU READY TO TAKE THE COUCH?
Join me on the couch tonight as I chat with with ladies in their 20s, 30s and 50s. I am in my 40s and I rep the ladies in their 40s! Why is dating so challenging?
Most people get in their own way more than anything or anyone else. We fail because we’re stuck in our heads, self-sabotaging, or acting in a way that we don’t even realize is deeply problematic. You don’t need to be trapped in a loop of negativity forever. You can break free, become more self-aware, and start to live your life on your terms. To date on your terms.
Dating is fairly simple, but people make it complicated. People, with their issues, bad habits, and unprocessed traumas, make dating very, very difficult.

6 Kids, 4 Mothers. Now What?
The conversation tonight is the perfect conversation going into the new year. Minister and Board-Certified Christian Counselor Charles Smith is on the couch with me tonight to discuss his personal journey including growing up as a "PK Kid" to becoming a 14-year-old minister of music, a 17-year-old father, the additional detours along the way to becoming a committed, loving husband and father of six, an ordained minister, an author, and someone who has held himself accountable for his missteps in life.
He shares a business with his wife, also an author and Board-Certified Christian Counselor, called The Conversation Christian Counseling, LLC.
Minister Smith's new book will be out next month - "Avoiding the Set-ups, It's Time to Deal with It".

Before you ask, YES Black folks sing opera and perform in operas, but not back in the day. Did you learn about Marian Anderson during Black History Month? Please, take the couch with me so we can chat about the opera.
